The Forum

MARYVILLE, Mo. — From country music finals to celebrity impersonation, dancing, quilts and more, the Nodaway County Fair will offer treasured memories for families and fairgoers. Starting Thursday, July 18 the carnival and vendors will open at 5 p.m. in Downtown Maryville followed by Little Mr. & Miss Nodaway County competition at 6 p.m. on the main stage. Marcos the Magician will make his rounds throughout the fair offering the height of entertainment. Maryville Dance Academy will perform at the main stage at 7 p.m. leading up to the night’s main event. Jason Brown will offer his brand of innovative country music starting at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 18 at the main stage on the corner of Third and Market streets. Born just three miles outside Pella, Iowa, Brown comes from a bloodline of truck drivers, coal miners and farmers, according to his website. He learned to sing performing with his Grandma Ruth at church. The first two songs he remembers singing in front of a crowd were “It Is No Secret,” and “I’ve Got a Mansion Just Over the Hilltop.” Gospel and traditional country songs are some of Brown’s favorites to sing. Brown has charted five songs consistently on the Billboard and MediaBase Country Charts including, “Momma Was a Rebel,” “Touchdown,” “I’d Love You to Hate Me,” “You Don’t Play Fair,” and “We’re All in the Same Boat.” He has performed with the country’s leading artists such as Blake Shelton, Rascal Flatts, Trace Adkins, Alan Jackson, Gary Alan, Luke Bryan, The Band Perry, Chris Young, Lee Brice, and Little Big Town. MARYVILLE, Mo. — A dozen singers will take to the main stage at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 19 for the final Pickup Country/KNIM Country Showdown competition. FAIR BRIEFS Big Brothers Girl Scouts Big Sisters to hold auction MARYVILLE, to hold Bingo M A RY V I L L E , Mo. — Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nodaway County will host Friday Night Bingo as a way for community members to cool off and win prizes. Games are set to be played from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, July 19 in the air conditioned showroom at Meyer Auto. “Increased expenses have put us in a budget deficit the last two years,” said Lynette Harbin, program director. “As we were looking for new fundraisers, Bingo came up.” Doug Meyer at Meyer Auto donated the use of his space to hold the event, she said. “We're hoping it will be a great form of family entertainment during the fair.” Bingo cards will be one for $2, three for $5 or 10 for $10. People may stay for one game or the entire night.

Mo. — During the fair, Girl Scout Troops 734 and 5014 will hold an auction to raise funds for the Scouts’ trip to Chicago. Eleven girls are planning to take a train to Chicago and use a City Pass to visit museums, a planetarium and more in June 2020. At this year's Nodaway County Fair, the Scouts are holding a silent auction of six gift baskets full of donations from area businesses. Some of the items include candles, hand-painted wine glasses from Minnie Lane and gift cards from local restaurants including A&G Restaurant, Simply Siam, Applebee's and El Maguey. “We're doing multiple fundraisers,” said Joy Livesay, troop leader. Some of those include a trivia night and babysitting among other things. She explained the group is hoping to raise around $600 from the gift baskets, which would help trip funds immensely.

Fair Parade to offer memorable moments By SKYE POURNAZARI The Forum

MARYVILLE, Mo. — On Saturday, July 20, Nodaway County residents will be able to find their treasure with the help of some horses, floats, cars, farm implements and a lot of people taking part in the 2019 Chamber Ambassadors Parade starting at 9:30 a.m. This year’s parade theme is “Find Your Treasure at the Nodaway County Fair.” Lily White, executive director of the Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber has handled the parade to help out the Fair Board members. “It’s a classic feel-good parade,” she said. Running the parade isn’t dif-

ficult she said, but more timeconsuming and detail-oriented. She said during a typical year, the parade will see anywhere from 50 to 70 entrants. She didn’t expect many extra political entries this year.

Parade details Judged organizational and commercial floats, antique cars, trucks and implements as well as horses must be pre-registered by Wednesday, July 17. Submit the registration form by email to chamber@maryvillechamber.com or send it to 408 N. Market St. Maryville, MO 64468; or fax it to 660-5823071. Local exhibits on display at county fair MARYVILLE, Mo. — The Nodaway County Fair once again will feature open exhibits on display July 1820 in the Nodaway County Administration Center’s Community Room, 403 N. Market St. in Maryville. All exhibits will be open for the public to view from 5 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, July 18 and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20. All work submitted must be the exhibitor’s original work and not previously exhibited at a Nodaway County Fair. Each entry must have an entry tag, including the name and address of the exhibitor, plus the class number. All entries must be received from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, July 18. Judging will take place at 2 p.m. on Thursday. There will be no admittance from 1 to 5 p.m. during judging and arranging. Youth exhibits for those under the age of 18 will be judged on the merits of each individual entry and not in competition with the 4-H exhibits. Every entry will receive a participation ribbon and judging is on an individual item basis, not compared to others in the class. Blue, red and white ribbons are awarded in every category. All exhibits must stay within the display until they can be picked up between noon and 2 p.m., Sunday, July 21 at the administration center. This rule is important due to the crowds of Saturday evening at the fair. If you, or someone you have designated, cannot make the pickup time, call Kay Wilson at 660-562-8635 to make other arrangements. As a tip, it is recommended to bring address labels to expedite the registration process if there are multiple exhibits from one person.

Church to host fourth annual breakfast for carnival workers MARYVILLE, Mo. — Members of the First Christian Church held a free breakfast for carnival workers before they set up the rides for last year’s fair, and this year they intend to do the same, albeit at an earlier time. Sue Schenkel, a member of the outreach committee told The Forum that this year’s event will begin at 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17 at the church. Former Pastor Dale Stewart had been to Kansas City and saw that a church down there had done something similar. He brought it back

to the outreach committee and the planning began. With the church’s Downtown Maryville location, the committee thought it would be a convenient place for the crew to be able to stop for a while and walk half a block to the church. “It’s just something to do to make them feel welcome in our community, Schenkel previously told The Forum. She said that first year, as chair of the committee she called Daniel Yarnell, owner and operator of Toby’s Carnival Company, Inc. to go over the details. Not knowing the

workers set up at night, the original plan had been to serve breakfast in the morning, but that quickly changed to 11 p.m. This year the time again changed to 10:30 p.m. in the hopes of offering an earlier chance to cool down. This is the committee’s fourth year to serve pancakes, sausage, biscuits, egg casseroles, coffee cakes, muffins, cereal and fruit. She said they offer cereal for the children who come along with the crew. Schenkel said in each of the past two years the church members have served 35 to 40 crew and family members.

Safety Alley will use a game to teach children MARYVILLE, Mo. — This year young fair attendees will have the opportunity to learn how to be safe in their everyday lives by playing a game in Safety Alley, hosted by the Safety for Kids of Nodaway County. The game will use sidewalk chalk, a ball and dice to lead children to various stations. At those stations, the children will hear from experts about a number of important safety topics, from pedestrian and vehicle safety to shaken baby and safe sleep education from Cornerstones of Care. Maryville Parks and Recreation will be on hand to offer swimming safety information, while fire safety will be taught by Maryville Public Safety fire division. At the end of the game, the children, all winners, will have the opportunity to “put out a fire,” with the help of firefighters and the fire truck and fire house. “We decided to design one large game packed full of experts in the field of safety education,” Kathryn Hawley, health educator at the Nodaway County Health Department, wrote in an email to The Forum. “We have a

lot of volunteers giving their time to support this effort. It is a fun and interactive way to promote safety and bring awareness to preventable injuries.” From 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, just south of the Nodaway County Administration Center, children can partake in a fun, interactive and educational game.

Krazy Quilters to auction fair quilt By SKYE POURNAZARI The Forum

MARYVILLE, Mo. — When the Krazy Quilters go big, they create a quilt so big it has to be hung over a railing to be viewed. This year’s Nodaway County Fair quilt comes in at a whopping 116 inches long by 92 inches wide, many inches longer than a typical king size quilt. The quilt is so large, the guild members had a difficult time displaying it for photos and eventually decided to hang it over a railing to offer a full look at its creative qualities. The old adage “many hands make light work,” is true in the case of the 2019

quilt, thanks to the members of the organization, Ruth Wake, Judy White, Holly Kay Cronk, Erin Mullins, Marlene Hall and Sue Wooten who diligently worked to put it together. This year’s quilt offers a look at Maryville both now and then, offering a map of the town including specially hand-sewn blocks designating local churches and blocks with photographs offered by local businesses both current and historic. The quilt is 98 percent custom, with nearly all the fabric designed by Cronk and created by Spoonflower.com; piecing was completed by guild members, and the quilt-

ing was furnished by Wake. Vibrant and full of color, the quilt also offers a story within the stitching. Patterns change throughout the piece, and some blocks show a diagonal “Mary ville” with a heart between, while others say “Nodaway County,” “Bearcats” or “Spoofhounds.” Wake estimated funds put into the creation of the quilt at $600 and more than 83 hours. With nearly every inch of the nostalgic quilt displaying a special Maryville or Nodaway County message, even down to the stitching, the quilters hope the public takes an interest during the auction. Wake said the auction is set for around 7 p.m. on Friday, July 19 at the fair.

Krazy Quilters to raffle quilt MARYVILLE, Mo. — A quilt created by the Ways and Means committee of the Krazy Quilters quilt guild will be raffled off during the Nodaway County Fair quilt show. The quilt was made by guild members Karen Farrens, chairman, Virginia Reynolds, Vicky Strong, Margaret Palmer, Sharon Riley and Helen Ford. It features an appliqued border and reproduction 30s fabric all donated by members of the club. The pattern is called Granny’s Stars and was quilted by Farrens. The funds collected from the raffle are used to make quilts for the families moving into Habitat for Humanity homes, the fair quilt and the raffle quilt. Some funds also may be given to The Source, The Ministry Center and the Nodaway County Senior Center. Chances may be purchased from any Krazy Quilt Guild member or in the basement of the Nodaway County Administration Center during the quilt show. Tickets are $1 each, six for $5 or 13 for $10. The winner will be drawn at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 20 at the Nodaway County Fair main stage.
