Welcome to Maryville!

A

s the Executive Director of the Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce, I receive opportunities to fall more in love with our beautiful town daily. In preparation for this publication I asked myself, “how can I tell those stories through photos and tales of our community?” And as usual the citizens of Maryville made my job exceptionally easy. This guide to a Maryville State of Mind has contributions from local photographers as well as current and past story tellers, while giving the space to highlight those that have spent their lives making Maryville the incredible place that it is. Our hope is that you find a place to grab a locally crafted drink, a novelty shop to spend an afternoon and some information that will enlighten you on the history and the progressive future of our home.

hether you are a Nodaway County native, a newcomer, a visitor or a prospective resident, you’ll find the welcome mat is always out in the Maryville community — an important commercial, government, education and recreation hub for northwest Missouri and beyond. Our welcoming tradition is rooted in Maryville’s long tradition of offering residents and visitors alike a community committed to families, neighborliness, quality-oflife and opportunity. A solid line-up of commercial and industrial enterprises, quality public schools and an increasingly vibrant downtown are just a few of the things this county-seat city of 12,000 residents has to offer. A regional center for higher education, Maryville is home to Northwest Missouri State University, which, in addition to top programs in education, business, agriculture, computer science and other career-centered disciplines, has a demonstrated annual economic impact estimated at more than $600 million. Outside the city limits, fertile valleys and broad pastures continue to support the area’s historically rich agricultural economy, which focuses on row crops and livestock. In addition to farming and numerous ag-related businesses, a strong manufacturing base, diverse retail scene and broad access to quality health care means that Maryville serves as an important economic center for residents across northwest Missouri, southwestern Iowa and southeastern Nebraska. Social and recreational amenities include 10 city parks, a community center offering a myriad of organized athletic and physical fitness opportunities, the Maryville Aquatic Center and 3,000-acre Mozingo Lake Recreation Park, a regional playground em-

bracing two golf courses and a 1,000-acre reservoir offering some of the best fishing in the region. The park also contains more than 100 RV campsites as well as cabins and group camping facilities. And while the great outdoors is a big part of life for many local residents, Maryville is also known for special events and gatherings centered around culture, music, the arts and family-friendly entertainment. These include a summertime concert series presented by Maryville Parks & Recreation; the Art, Rhythm and Brews festival; the Nodaway County Fair; the annual Christmas Parade and Winter Wonderland light display; and numerous concerts and stage shows on the Northwest Missouri State campus. Of course for the sports fan, there is no place quite like Maryville, which has earned the nickname Title Town due to the stellar performances of the nationally ranked Northwest Bearcats football and basketball teams and the Maryville High School Spoofhounds, whose student-athletes are perennial state-championship contenders. So whether you’re just visiting, looking for a place to build a career and raise a family or seeking a welcoming, resource-rich community in which to retire, there is a good chance Maryville offers the lifestyle and opportunity you’re looking for. Pay us a visit, and stay as long as you like. You’re welcome anytime. Maryville, Missouri 7

Downtown revitalization Downtown Maryville is — and always has been — the beating heart of our community, home to all sorts of local business and events the year round. Newly-adopted design guidelines are part of an organized effort by the city and groups like the Downtown Maryville to unify and beautify the historic downtown aesthetic. The area is in the middle of a transformation that includes new wayfinding signage, awnings and other aesthetic improvements, traffic lights, street signs and more that reflect the welcoming, small-town atmosphere of Downtown Maryville.

2019 Viewbook COMMUNITY AWARDS For more than 50 years, Maryville has been recognized across the nation as a slice of American small-town living. In 1969, Maryville became the 10th city in Missouri to be named an AllAmerica City by the National Civic League — a designation that lasts forever. Then as now, city leaders cited Maryville’s unique blend of community engagement, health care facilities and focus on education, still the pillars that define the city today. Since then the city and its residents have been recognized for their efforts in each pillar time and time again, including the designation by the Missouri General Assembly of the Missouri Arboretum at Northwest Missouri State University, to the Great Places in Missouri Award, given by the American Planning Association in 2012 to a newly reimagined Fourth Street corridor. or both residents and visitors, Maryville is a leading recreational hub in Northwest Missouri. This is due in large part to 3,000-acre Mozingo Lake Recreation Park, which is located just east of the city and lies north of U.S. Highway 136.

The city-owned park comprises a 1,000-acre lake offering some of the best sport fishing in the region in addition to two golf courses — including a nine-hole youth course designed by golf legend Tom Watson; a business-class hotel; a full-service event center; and William Coy’s, a gourmet restaurant and catering service with a menu that focuses on regionally-grown farm-to-market fare. The events center can accommodate gatherings of up to 500 people and offers unobstructed, 180-degree views of both golf courses and the lake from a wrap-around deck. In addition, the center contains a golf pro shop, golf simulators, meeting rooms and a banquet hall.

Nodaway County, established in 1845, spans 878 square miles and is the fourth largest county of Missouri's 114 counties.

A team of leaders full of motivation

M

aryville, the county seat of Nodaway County, uses the council/manager form of government, while Nodaway is one of 21 Missouri counties organized into townships, rural government entities primarily tasked with funding and maintaining farm-to-market gravel and dirt roads.

Five city council members are elected at large and serve staggered three- year terms and together elect one of its number to serve a one-year term as mayor. Day-to-day municipal administration is the responsibility of a hired city manager. Maryville’s Department of Public Safety, which will soon move into a new $4 million facility, is responsible both for municipal law enforcement and fire protection, including 911 dispatching.

36 Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce

The new police/fire headquarters is to include a combined 911 dispatching center that will serve both city police and the Nodaway County Sheriff ’s Office in addition to the Nodaway County Ambulance District. All Maryville Public Safety officers are cross trained as police officers and firefighters, thus complimenting the city’s largely volunteer firefighting corps. Other locally headquartered law en-

forcement agencies include a Missouri State Highway patrol office and the Northwest Missouri State University Police Department. In recent years, Maryville has invested millions of dollars in a number of major infrastructure improvements, including street resurfacing, replacement and repair of sewer and water lines and construction of a $13.7 million mechanical wastewater treatment plant.

Nodaway County Nodaway County is administered by a threemember County Commission whose members are elected to four-year terms. Other elected officeholders include the county clerk, assessor, collector-treasurer, recorder of deeds, public administrator, sheriff, and coroner. Associated with the county is Missouri’s Fourth Judicial Circuit, which in Maryville is served by a presiding circuit judge, associate circuit judge, prosecuting attorney, circuit clerk and a number of staff members. Most county officials work out of the Nodaway County Administration Center on the Maryville square. Court offices and courtrooms are located across the street in the Victorian Era courthouse, completed in 1881 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. â–

aryville and Nodaway County are at the forefront regionally and nationally in recruiting and implementing investment in green energy sources and high-speed information technology. The county is currently home to one operating wind farm, which was completed by Wind Capital Group in 2008 near the small communities of Conception, Conception Junction and Clyde. Two additional, larger, installations are currently under construction.

The Clear Creek Energy Center is projected to produce 240 megawatts of electricity? That’s enough to power 100,000 single-family residences.

e location for innovation When completed the Tenaska Clear Creek Energy Center in northern Nodaway County will embrace between 100 and 120 turbines projected to produce a total of about 240 megawatts of electricity, or enough energy to power 100,000 single-family residences. Construction cost for the new wind farm is estimated at more

than $200 million, and when completed Tenaska will pay about $1.2 million a year in property taxes, most of which will help support public schools. A third wind installation, Enel Green Power North America’s White Cloud complex, is similar in scope to the Tenaska project and is currently under develop-

ment in the western portion of the county. Enel projects White Cloud will provide more than $43 million in local property tax revenue and around $56 million in landowner lease payments. On other fronts, United Fiber, a subsidiary of United Electric Cooperative, is in the process of expand-

ing high-speed carbon fiber internet service to include all homes and businesses within the city limits. “As education, agriculture and health care are pillars of our community and greatly impacted by the availability of high-speed fiber internet, we are fortunate to have a partner in United Fiber,” said Maryville Mayor Rachael Martin. Maryville, Missouri 39

The company cited national studies showing that residential fiber internet can increase home values by as much as $5,000. Maryville’s connection to green energy and communications connectivity stretches back to the 1980s. When Northwest Missouri State University became the nation’s first state-assisted “electronic campus” by providing students and faculty members with networked data terminals. Earlier in the decade, Northwest embarked on a program to reduce the university’s dependence on fossil fuels by shifting to alternative materials, such as wood chips, pelletized paper and animal waste/ feedstocks. Processed on campus, these substances are burned in order to generate thermal energy used to heat and cool campus buildings. After 25 years of operation, the system, which remains online today, was found to have produced $12.5 million in savings over the use of natural gas and oil, savings that were reallocated in support of academic programs and market-based pay.

The business has contracts with Hy-Vee, Northwest Missouri State University and others. While scores of local residents have joined the effort to turn Lettuce Dream into reality, the initial vision and much of the elbow grease behind the project came from board president Diane Francis, who founded the organization. At the time, Francis, the mother of a child with special needs, said she wanted to create a place where young people dealing with disabilities could acquire job-focused training after finishing high school. In the years since, through a combination of private donations, trust and foundation gifts, government grants, and the sale of Neighborhood Assistance Program tax credits through the Missouri Department of Economic Development, the organization raised the more than $600,000 needed to get the project off the ground. ■Maryville, Missouri 41

aryville is located near the geographic center of Northwest Missouri, the Quad-State area — and the entire United States.

The city is situated at the junction of U.S. Highway 71, one of the country’s major north-south thoroughfares, and U.S. 136, an east-west route linking Indianapolis with western Nebraska. Maryville is also approximately midway between Interstates 29 and 35, placing it near the hub of one of the major Midwest highway networks.

As a primary four-lane route traversing from the nation’s northern boundary at International Falls, Minnesota, to near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, U.S. 71 through Maryville connects with I-29 just north of St. Joseph, 35 miles south.

U.S. 136, meanwhile, provides Maryville’s east-west connection to the interstate system. It is approximately 40 miles west to its intersection with I-29 at Rock Port, Missouri. Highway 136 also connects with I-35, another major north-south highway in the central United States, 57 miles east at Bethany, Missouri.

History

T

A community that honors its past

he county is part of the Platte Purchase of 1836, a transaction that opened much of northwest Missouri to settlement after it was relinquished by several Native American tribes, whose language is believed to have given Nodaway its name. A map dating to the famed Lewis and Clark expedition in the early 1800s shows the “Nodaway” river. Humans are believed to have lived in the region for more than 12,000 years, dating back to “ice age” of the Pleistocene Epoch, typified by woolly mammoths and other large mammals. Following the arrival of European settlers, Maryville was named in honor of Mary Graham, the wife of Amos Graham, the town’s first postmaster and a Nodaway County clerk. U.S. President Herbert Hoover once owned a farm near Graham southwest of Maryville, and the Bilby Ranch, founded near Quitman, claimed holdings throughout

much of the West. At its 19th century height, the ranch was considered one of the largest in the nation. Two Nodaway County farms were famous for their horse-racing connections. Isaac N. Prather settled on a farm just west of Maryville in 1839 and imported a famous English thoroughbred, Faustus, for which his Faustiana farm was named. The Faustiana stables were home to Elwood, the 1904 Kentucky Derby winner. Thoroughbred trainers Ben A. Jones and Horace A. “Jimmy” Jones farmed, and later retired, near Parnell in eastern Nodaway County. The father-son team came to equestrian prominence during their time at Calumet Farms in Kentucky, where they trained six Kentucky Derby champions and two Triple Crown winners. Famous Nodaway County natives include opera conductor and impresario Sarah Caldwell; Dale Carnegie, author of “How to Win Friends and Influence People”; novelist Homer Croy; Missouri governors Albert P. Morehouse and Forrest C. Donnell; U.S. Sen. Edward H. Moore of Oklahoma; World War II Medal of Honor-winner Albert David; and professional wrestler Harley Race.

Maryville celebrates 50 years as an All-America City Maryville in 2019 celebrated the 50th anniversary of the city being named an All-America City by the National Civic League in 1969. The award highlights communities that have used four criteria — civic engagement and collaboration, innovation, diversity and inclusiveness, and impact — as a basis for solving complex issues that lead to strong communitybased solutions, according to a city news release. “It is really exciting,” said Maryville Mayor Rachael Martin. I was really pleased when city staff realized it was going to be the 50th anniversary with so much time to make an effort to celebrate what that means.” She believes it is important that people stop and celebrate the good works they work so diligently toward as a community. “It’s part of our identity,” she said. “It speaks to the fact that we are a community that works together. … Everybody take a minute and recognize the hard work that our community leaders put in to make positive things happen.” Since its inception, the All-America City Award in 1949, has been presented to more than 550 communities. Each year 10 communities are honored with the award. Eighteen cities in Missouri have received the honor of being designated an All-America City, some of them more than once. Maryville’s 1969 All-America City Award application highlighted partnerships between five pillars of community to include achievements in government, education, industry, business and health care. The Maryville Community Betterment committee, led by Everett W. Brown, Dr. James Becks, Craig Stephenson, Dr. James Lowe and Mrs. Charles Bell, championed the initiative to receive the title of All-America City. Mayor Harold VanSickle dedicated March 1–7, 1970 as All-America City Week and received a congratulatory letter from President Richard Nixon. Once a community achieves the All-America City designation it keeps it. Maryville city staff urged citizens to celebrate the anniversary and join in recognizing continued local partnerships.
