Nodaway Valley Bank marks several milestones

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Nodaway Valley Bank was founded in Maryville in 1868 and is the largest independently owned and managed bank in northwest Missouri. The bank’s first expansion outside of Nodaway County occurred in 1990, when a full service branch opened in Savannah, followed by St. Joseph in 1995. In 2003, The Heritage Bank of St. Joseph was acquired, followed by the Exchange Bank of Mound City in 2007. In 1971, the bank’s footings stood at $32 million and have steadily grown over the last half century, increasing five-fold since entering the St. Joseph market. Last year, the bank’s footings crossed the $1 billion threshold, a milestone in the bank’s 152 year history. In early 2020, the bank opened a loan production office in Platte City which was consolidated into a full service branch in the St. Luke’s Multispecialty Clinic building. A second full service branch in the Kansas City Northland opened in Smithville in De-

cember. Nodaway Valley Bank now has 10 full service facilities serving six communities. The pandemic caused unexpected financial stress on the nation’s economy, affecting businesses of all kinds. Through the Small Business Administration, Nodaway Valley Bank supported more than 1,600 local businesses throughout Northwest Missouri through the Paycheck Protection Program helping maintain an estimated 12,000 jobs. “This program covered a wide variety of commercial loan customers, and it proved to be a financial lifeline for businesses and people affected by temporary closures and accompanying revenue declines,” said Nodaway Val-

ley Bank president Cort Hegarty. “As a community bank, we are proud of our role and pleased that we could be of help.” Nodaway Valley Bank has always prided itself for being on the forefront of technological innovation, particularly when it enhances customer convenience. The bank offers many free online and mobile banking services, including mobile deposit. The bank is introducing a new digital messaging program, providing instant notifications within online/mobile banking apps or by email/text of account activity, including a low balance reminder to help avoid overdrafts. The bank also plans to introduce a contactless debit card this year.

Make it Maryville HORIZON PRODUCE & PLANT HOUSE NEW SUMMER HOURS! MON.-SAT. 8-12 SUN. CLOSED MC/Visa Accepted PHOTOS BY KEN GARNER/THE FORUM

Hanging baskets are shown at The Plant House located at 24481 Business Highway 71.

The Plant House brings knowledge and variety

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Entering the summer of their third year as a business, The Plant House owners, Kelsey Bowlin and Tim Janousek are becoming more comfortable with the work each day. “It’s a learning process,” Bowlin said. “Every year our knowledge is growing. We may not know everything yet, but we are gaining that knowledge piece by piece.” Part of that knowledge comes from the company’s tag line on the sign out front “We know ’em – We grow ’em.” The other part likely comes from the fact that both Bowlin and Janousek are full-time instructors at Northwest Missouri State University in biology and geology, respectively. Bowlin and Janousek got into the greenhouse business not only to make a profit, but because of their passion for plants and helping other people. “It is labor intensive so you

have to love it,” Bowlin said. The biggest sellers at The Plant House this year have been annuals, succulents and houseplants as well as petunias, combos and pottery. For those who haven’t been to the The Plant House recently, located at 24481 Business 71 on the north end of Maryville, there are some aesthetic as well as customer service shifts. Some of those changes, according to Janousek, are new benches, new fixtures

and new stocks of pottery and sprucing up the property. The Plant House also opened up a second register for busy times to reduce customer wait time. “We’ve been on a constant realm of improvement to make it a better shopping experience for the customer,” he said. In the near future, The Plant House will have a sale on its annuals, where those particular plants will be sold for up to 50 percent off as the business starts

preparing for the next season and making orders for 2022. “We’re always looking for new things — what do people want to have that we don’t have and things that they really liked this year,” Bowlin said. “We are always looking for input on what to have on hand to make next year even better.” Bowlin said that although a person can probably find plants at other places for a cheaper price, the customer surely won’t get the personal attention that The Plant House can offer. “We want people to support local,” she said. “There are other places you can go like the big box stores, but we are locally owned. We buy all the plants and pick all the plants.” The Plant House will soon transition to its summer hours when the greenhouse will be open from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Saturday.

Chamber excited for the future MARYVILLE, Mo. — The Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce is a 270 member-supported and respected organization with two full-time staff members and one part-time staff member, led by executive director Lily White. The organization is directed by nine board members that are dedicated and passionate about providing leadership to assist in the growth and development of business, while enhancing the community as a whole. According to White, the chamber believes there is no better place to live or do business than Maryville and that is why the organization has long been known for providing resources to area businesses through referrals, networking, advocating for business at the local and state level and hosting community events. Although the COVID-19 pandemic slowed down commerce, White is excited about the growth of Maryville businesses and a sense of a return to normalcy is on the horizon. “I really feel like everything here in Maryville is about to start again,” she said. “We have countless businesses that have or are about to open their doors and making some changes. We are at a point where everything is moving forward and very quickly. So that is really exciting. Things that people have talked about for years is finally coming to fruition.” The chamber’s annual schedule includes Great Northwest Day at the

The general operating pharmacy has evolved from one small, hometown location in Fairfax, to locations in Tarkio, Mound City, St. Joseph and Maryville. Rogers Pharmacy’s staff has administered over 1,500 shots and is continuing to take care of anyone who calls needing the vaccine. Rogers’ pharmacists can also administer immunizations, which include the Shingles, Influenza, TDAP, Pneumonia, and the MCV (Meningococcal) vaccine. Not much can stop a Kawasaki motor, and as it turns out not much can stop the manufacturing plant or its employees either, not even a global pandemic. While many were not exactly sure how to deal with the crisis, Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp., USA, went directly to work to address the issues and find a solution, according to human resources manager Tim Melvin, which goes right in line with one of the company’s core values “adaptability.” In April of 2020, Kawasaki voluntarily closed its operations for more than three weeks in an effort to evaluate and make changes to accommodate a safe working environment for its employees. Melvin said that the employees of Kawasaki are a integral part of why the company was able to thrive over the past year. “The biggest success over the last year is the way that Kawasaki worked through the whole COVID situation,” Melvin said. “Once we came back it was business as usual.” Initially, Melvin said no one knew what the immediate future would hold in regard to sales. It turns out that business as usual may be putting it lightly as the demand for Kawasaki engines produced at the Maryville plant increased, which has been here in the community since 1989. “It turned out, (the pandemic) actually enhanced it,” he said. “We just keep moving on. Our team has really made things happen. Business is booming. Our product is in extremely high demand. ... Sales have been really

The facility now allows for multiple pass-thru scanners that speed up the entrance and exit of employees. The new entrance also features a heated sidewalk, steps and

ADA compliant ramps, to keep ice from building up. Kawasaki also continued its tradition of being an excellent community steward. After the plant completed its upgrade of the cafeteria and kitchen area, rather than toss the equipment, the company offered it to Nodaway County school districts who were feeling the brunt of budget constraints. Kawasaki currently has multiple openings. Anyone interested in joining the worldwide leading manufacturer may visit www.kawasakimaryville.com. “We’ve always got something going on,” Melvin said.

City constantly moving forward From new parks to new businesses and eventually a new gateway into the community, the city of Maryville is constantly moving forward. One of the city’s biggest undertakings in recent memory, Phase 1 of the South Main Corridor Improvement Project, is slated to be underway by August. “This is probably the most transformative project the community has ever seen,” city manager Greg McDanel said. “To redo the front entrance and corridor to Maryville is critical.” Phase 1 construction will take place from South Avenue to South Hills Drive (State Route V) and will take approximately 15-18 months. The city then hopes to begin construction of Phase 2, which continues south to U.S. Highway 71 bypass. The 4,000-square-foot splash pad was made possible by donations from longtime Maryville residents the late Dick Thomson and his wife Kay, who gave more than half a million dollars to turn the pedestrian friendly ADA accessible park into a reality. The park is open to the public and free of charge from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day until October. “What a great opportunity presented by the Thomson family for the youth of this community,” McDanel said. “One of the great things about the park is that it is free and available

to all people regardless of socioeconomic status and brings people from all over the area, which is also good for the businesses in our community.” The economy of Maryville as well as downtown revitalization is also thriving as several new businesses have either opened recently or are neaing their opening dates. “This is a ball that’s been set in motion for quite a few years, and it’s kind of at the tipping point,” McDanel said. “Downtown is really going to take off.” The current crown jewel of Maryville remains Mozingo Lake Recreation Park with its camping, golf,

fishing, boating, hotel and restaurant, as well as a conference center. “It continues to be an economic (and tourism) driver for this community,” McDanel said. Currently, the city is working on expanding 43 RV sites, some with full hookups, and hopes to have those done by the fall. Also in the future is a possible new water treatment plant. In the meantime, the city continues to implement new strategies to mitigate recurring taste and odor issues, as well as getting a new granular activated carbon adsorber later in the year.

The local business owned by Melody Blair is “gearing up” for its five-year anniversary on July 13. “It’s a great time to be in Maryville,” Blair said. Besides getting ready for the store’s anniversary, Minnie Lane has hats in stock for those looking to go to this year’s Kentucky Derby-themed Downtown Maryville Glitz and Glam event in July. It wasn’t that many years ago when health care in residents of like Maryville and surrounding communities received their health care the old-fashioned way from private medical clinics or a doctor’s office. Family nurse practitioner Leslie Luke continues that way providing a variety of medical services to her patients. It’s been nearly 20 years since Luke ventured out on her own to create The Care Clinic. She has been at her current location at 106 W. MAINTENANCE FREE LIVING Experience a care-free lifestyle.

For more than a quarter of a century, NorthwestCell has been pleased to offer premium cellular service to customers within its coverage area. This year marks its 30th anniversary. Established in 1991, Northwest Missouri Cellular (as it was then known) was at the forefront of bringing cellular advancements to our rural communities. Focusing on the expectations of the individuals who make up these communities has allowed the company to flourish in an industry known for its aggressive competition. Success often has roots in humble beginnings and NorthwestCell is a testament to this. It began by selling mobile devices from a small desk in the Priority One office on Main Street in Maryville with one employee and two cellular towers. These devices were the legendary Motorola Bag Phones — beloved for their signal strength and rugged dependability. Before long business was booming, necessitating the opening of the Third Street office with more employees and more towers. Its reputation was soon solidified and perhaps best illustrated by the famous tagline, “Nothing but the sky offers better coverage.” In the years that followed, expansion resulted in more office relocations and additional network build-outs. Accelerating this growth was the cellular industry’s spirit of innovation. Large phones with a singular purpose evolved into smaller phones with more robust functionality and the network infrastructure to support them. The following years saw the technology

‑ Roger Bundridge, NorthwestCell General Manager

morph through a succession of “generations”: 1G (Analog/AMPS), 2G (Digital/ TDMA), 3G (Broadband/CDMAEVDO) and 4G (High-Speed/LTE). Iconic phones like the previously mentioned bag phones, the Nokia 3310, the Motorola RAZR, the Blackberry and the iPhone were must-have devices. They changed the fabric of daily life to such a degree that it is now difficult to imagine life without them. Today, NorthwestCell continues to thrive by combining high-speed data and sophisticated smartphones with the best cellular coverage available both at home and beyond. It owns and operates a network of more than 40 towers at the local level. It also offers unparalleled coverage anywhere in the continental United States through roaming agreements with national carriers and other rural carriers. It offers the latest smartphones from Apple and Android in a variety of models and price-points. Every customer is different; to ensure the right fit for the specific needs of every individual, NorthwestCell offers several service plans including Unlimited Data plans starting at $45 per month. However, the incessant march of technology can be just as overwhelming as is it enabling. Because of this, NorthwestCell places a high priority on

customer service. Along with the home office in Maryville, there are eight agent locations throughout its five-county market available to offer support in several ways. Customers may easily visit a nearby location to receive expert help using their smartphone, understanding their bill and/or upgrading to new devices. The employees and agents aim to form lasting relationships with their customers through genuine one-on-one interactions. As NorthwestCell moves into the fourth decade of business, it is confident and excited about the legacy it maintains and the future it faces. “We’ve been extremely fortunate in being able to provide a level of service that exceeds that of other carriers in our market,” said Roger Bundridge, general manager. “There are always challenges to overcome — more phones, different plans, network upgrades, pandemics — but we enjoy trying new things and finding solutions that work for us and our customers. We have dedicated employees who are involved in the communities we serve, and we believe in assisting those communities any way we can. Our 30-year anniversary affirms that commitment. I am very pleased with what we’ve accomplished so far, and we’re looking forward to what lies ahead.”

Best Brands Plus has appliances covered Whether it’s home appliances, home electronics or repair service for any of those items, your locally owned Best Brands Plus has your needs covered. Serving northwest Missouri since 1939, Best Brands Plus — also your local Radio Shack — located at 2605 S. Main St. in Maryville has numerous products in stock, even some of the hard to find items, according to store owner Cliff McNair. “We do have some product, and the fact that we are the only place you are going to buy products and get service (is important) and we’ve been that way since 1939,” he said. “If you want to bring your truck we can load you up with appliances. We can sell the (items) on the floor because it belongs to us not some manufacturer. Product is out there even though it may not be exactly the selection you want but we are getting everything we can and as much as we can.” McNair acknowledged the nationwide shortage of items he normally can get with relative ease. “It is very hard to get product in a lot of areas,” he said. “Unless you’re looking for something you don’t realize how bad it is. A lot of places don’t have any

It’s a more difficult environment than I’ve ever seen in my life.” Although difficult, McNair has found a way to provide his customers with the products they need. From the big brands to smaller brands, there’s a great chance that Best Brands Plus either has it or will try everything to find it. With items being difficult to find at times, Best Brands Plus is seeing skyrocketing service calls for items that would normally be replaced, especially with so few places actually servicing appliances and/or electronics. “The service business is

booming,” McNair said. “We try to do them as fast as we can and prioritize based on need.” “Years ago every town had three or four appliance (stores) with their own service (technicians). Now, with big box stores they have low prices, but no service. Everyone else is left out in the cold. It’s almost impossible to get service on anything appliance or electronics related. What many people don’t understand is that as long as you continue to support places that don’t do service, you’re not going to get service.” McNair said that some of the brands he has readily

available are Crosley and Beko, which is a relatively new European manufacturer, that the store has been offering for approximately three years. “I have no problems on supply with (Beko),” he said. “The products are a little smaller in dimension, but they are available and there is a rebate on laundry items.” Best Brands Plus, the home of great brands with low prices and nice folks and service after the sale, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Maryville Host Lions gives back to community

For more than 82 years, members of the Maryville Host Lions have found numerous ways to continually make Maryville and Nodaway County a better place for everyone. “I think the most important thing for people to understand is that we live up to our motto of ‘We serve,’” said president Sam Mason. “We do our best to always give back to our community.” Members of Lions Club International are part of a network of 1.4 million men and women in more than 200 countries and geographic areas who work together to answer the needs that challenge communities around the world, protect and restore the environment Some of the overall goals of the international organization are to help end preventable blindness and help communities to have access to nutritious foods just to name a few. On the local level the organization helps deliver “Meals On Wheels” twice a week and donates to the Nodaway County Senior Center through an annual contribution and as a part of the Angel Program, and provides a service that displays the American Flag on all holidays at numerous locations in Maryville through a cooperative effort with local Boy Scouts. Other local charitable areas the Host Lion support include the following:

• Gives eye glasses to needy children • Assists young people to go to Boys State and Girls State • Co-sponsors a citywide Easter Egg Hunt • Gives to the development of Mozingo • Sponsors the ‘Farm Woman of the Year’ annual award • Provides children’s eye photo screenings and hearing screenings • Promotes diabetes awareness • Provides annual scholarships for Nodaway County high school seniors • Supports the annual Lions District All-Star Basketball Classic • Supports the annual state Lions All-Star Football Game • Maintains the Lions Freedom Rock Plaza • Sponsors and participates in Adopt-A-Highway program

8:30 AM - 5:30 PM

The club helps fund these endeavors in many ways, but two of its biggest fundraising efforts are through its annual golf tournament and the food booth at the Nodaway County Fair, which is located on the south side of the courthouse grounds near the main stage. If the Host Lions tent is not the most popular food booth it is certainly one of them, according to Mason. “We’ve been a fixture at the Nodaway County Fair for many years and look forward to people coming out to support our club and enjoy the fair.” “People can come, have dinner and enjoy all the shows, pageants, bands, while at the same time giving back to our community.” The Maryville Host Lions Club members are in their every day lives and constantly strive to live up to its motto and mantra of “We Serve.” “We are absolutely a fixture in the community,” Mason said. “Historically, the membership of this club has been business owners, community and government leaders, civic leaders. It really is a group of movers and shakers who make things happen in Maryville. Everybody that is part of our club wants to make Maryville better than they found it.”

Dr. Chip Fillingane has opened Continuum Family Care, a new family health care practice in Maryville. Staff members are shown from left: LPN Helen Smith, Dr. Fillingane, SaraBeth Fillingane and LPN Ame Ebrecht.

Continuum Family Care offers comprehensive flexible care

As one of the new kids on the block in regard to alternative choices for primary health care, Continuum Family Care is quickly becoming a go-to provider for area residents. Since February, Dr. Chip Fillingane and his team have been focusing on making primary health care easily accessible and in a variety of ways while still providing that personal touch “We love caring for patients,” he said. “We try to spend time with the patients and address whatever people have to bring us.” Continuum focuses on preventive health care, primary care, full laboratory testing — including screening and diagnostic lab tests — and telehealth appointments, which allow patients to receive the same level of attention and communication as in-person visits from the comfort of home. “Navigating the health care system is often intimidating and impersonal, and finding a health care provider you trust can be challenging,” Fillingane said. “From physicals to fevers, lab tests to well-child visits, pain management to prescriptions, we offer affordable and simplified care — with detailed and efficient appointments — to fit your schedule and your insurance plan.” Continuum Family Care uses a comprehensive approach to family health

care, moving past treating symptoms to include preventive care and longterm wellness and health for every stage of life, from newborns to seniors, for residents of Maryville and northwest Missouri. The Continuum team has a passion for maintaining patient health and simplifying health care and is dedicated to taking a comprehensive approach to prevent medical issues, assessing the health of the entire patient instead of simply alleviating symptoms. Continuum now provides special services for Medicare patients with a devoted chronic care nurse team that can preemptively catch things that go on at home before they come in and even between visits. The local provider also uses remote patient learning systems for people with chronic conditions so the patient can have items at their home that con-

nect with Continuum to alert if something is abnormal. This may allow the office to catch something before a hospital visit is required. Continuum focuses on connected care which allows them to see their patient’s records from visits at other facilities and other doctors they’ve seen. There is no cumbersome record request process or the possibility of forgetting a doctor’s name. Some of the many health care systems Continuum is connect with include Mosaic Life Care, KU Medical Center, Children’s Mercy Hospital, University of Nebraska, MU and more. Continuum offers flexible scheduling as patients can make appointments 24-hours a day via telephone or online. Continuum Family Care is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and located at 2336 S. Main St. in the lower level of the building. Interested new patients should call or text 660-220-2123 to schedule a first visit. Established patients may schedule appointments 24 hours a day by phone or online and they can request prescription refills, pay bills and send messages through the patient portal found at continuumfamilycare.com. Prior to opening Continuum Family Care, Fillingane spent the last five years as a staff physician at Mosaic Medical Center - Maryville.

From new and used vehicles, a topnotch service center, vehicle detailing to car rental, the Tri State Auto Family has customer’s needs covered. Tri State is a one-stop shop, whether its the Ford, Lincoln, Mercury brand or the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep brand where making a customer and friend for life is always the goal. “We have the right product at the right price and good people working here to help customers get what they want,” said Todd Hill, president. “We have the uniqueness and reputation that people trust.” The dealership, which has won five Ford President Awards, also specializes in used vehicles and prides itself on being able to procure what customers are looking for. According to Hill, it just can’t be any used vehicle, as it must meet the Tri State standard. “We look high and low to find the right vehicle that fits our business model and our customer’s needs,” Hill said. “We are constantly making sure we have the best value for the customer.” Although the Tri State family prides itself for its in-person experience, the dealership has adapted during the past year to be able to do almost anything online. “We have the ability on our website from start to finish for people to buy a vehicle online,” Hill said. Tri State has sold and shipped vehicles to customers in nearly all 50 states and across the globe sending vehicles to Iceland and Russia. Hill said that Ford has some exciting new products that are out in 2021, including the all-new Ford Bronco, Bronco Sport, Mustang Mach E SUV and the allelectric Lightning F-150, which can power an entire home if the electricity goes out. “Ford is building products that people really want and are very desirable,” he said.

Shown is the new Mustang Mach E SUV and it is available at Tri State in Maryville. Although Hill is proud of all his employees at Tri State, he is especially proud of the service department where they currently have four senior master technicians. Most dealerships even in large metropolitan areas have only a few. “We’re blessed by having really good technicians who constantly train,” he said. The Maryville facility, which has customers from all over the four-state region, is capable of servicing all type of vehicles, even electric ones. Tri State opened its doors in Maryville nearly 13 years ago with nine employees and today there are 74 and Hill is looking to add even more. Tri State is currently looking for technicians, detailers, service porter and salespeople. Hill, who was a finalist for the Time Dealer of the Year, believes in service not only to his customers, but also the community, which he attributes to his father.

Zimmerman keeps on trucking While traveling U.S. Highways 71 or 136 or any other roads in northwest Missouri or southwest Iowa, if you have seen a truck hauling gravel or any other variety of things, it’s more than likely one of the trucks from Zimmerman Hauling & Construction. A third-generation business, Zimmerman Hauling & Construction offers a wide range of services from various kinds of gravel, river rock, sand, lime, fill dirt, soil, mulch and other custom hauling needs. The business has even been known to haul out snow. “Anything we can get our hands on we help out and fit it in,” said current owner Jacobi Zimmerman. The local family-owned business has been helping people and businesses alike with all of their hauling needs since 1967 when

the family business on to a fourth generation of Zimmermans to take care of the region’s hauling needs. It’s not just big rigs that Zimmerman Hauling & Construction use to transports items. They also have dump trucks to meet residential and smaller business needs. The company also does skid loader work. There’s not much that can slow down the crew at Zimmerman Hauling, not even a global pandemic. “We’re busier than we ever have been,” Jacobi Zimmerman said. “People are doing a lot of home projects, including driveways and landscaping. Last year was better than previous years and we’re hoping this year is even better.” Zimmerman Hauling & Construction can be reached at 660-254-9993 for residential and commercial hauling needs.

Whether a customer is looking for a brand new home, upgrading their current living situation, selling an existing home, or purchasing or selling investment property, this locally owned, company will do what it takes with its experienced and knowledgeable staff. After upgrading locations several times over the years, Shirley’s Realty has settled nicely into its current location at 603 N. Hear Care Partners is located at 102 E Torrance St.

Hearing experts focus on total wellness

When it comes to the body, just about everything is connected in one way or another — including the ears and the brain. That’s why the experts at Hearing Care Partners approach hearing health with an eye toward total wellness. Understanding the Impacts Many people don’t realize that hearing loss and cognitive decline go hand in hand. According to research, older adults with hearing loss may experience: • Significantly reduced cognitive functioning 3.2 years before their normal-hearing peers • Thinking and memory problems at a 30 to 40 percent faster rate than their normalhearing peers • A five-fold greater risk of developing dementia, which can significantly reduce quality of life • A 57 percent greater risk of deep depression, which can affect the ability to think and more

The good news is that a growing body of studies demonstrates the benefits of improved hearing — and those benefits can go well beyond communication. One investigation published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society in 2018 found that age-related cognitive decline may slow as much as 75 percent with hearing aid use. Recognizing the Signs Getting regular checkups and recognizing potential warning signs of hearing loss can go a long way toward helping preserve hearing health. Think about your hearing as you answer these questions: • Have you felt a sense of ringing or buzzing in one or both ears? • Is it tough to understand speech in noisy environments? • Are loved ones complaining about your television volume? • Does it seem like folks

around you are mumbling when they speak? • Do women’s and children’s voices seem especially hard to understand?

If you answered “yes” to one or more of these questions, you may have a hearing loss. Addressing it sooner rather than later could make a big difference in your communication and overall health. Trusting Local Experts With so much riding on keeping your hearing health in top shape, it’s important to get regular checkups. Doctors Karen Melton, Au.D., CCC-A, and Michelle Woodward, Au.D., merged their separate practices with a third clinic in 2018 to create the award-winning Hearing Care Partners and make getting checkups easy. With personalized service designed to fit any unique need, their highly trained team at HCP: • Is committed to strong patient-provider relationships based on honesty,

integrity, and values • Works with you to diagnose and find solutions for your hearing, tinnitus, and balance issues • Uses state-of-the-art equipment and the most advanced technology • Offers exceptional followup care to ensure any needs are met today, tomorrow, and beyond

What especially sets Hearing Care Partners apart? In addition to being local, independent, and community-oriented, HCP is fully dedicated to a patient-centered approach that puts the customer first. It’s all about making sure they don’t miss any of the precious moments in their life. Hearing and cognitive functioning have a lot in common — including playing critical roles in quality of life. Tranquility Court is located on the south end of Maryville and offers zero-entry, maintenance free living.

Double B offers maintenance free living at its finest A vision 10 years in the making has not only come to fruition for Double B Development, but its maintenance free living environment named Tranquility Court is thriving on the south end of Maryville with views of country living without ever leaving the city limits. Local developers Bill and Bonnie Ingels — the “B’s” in Double B — currently have nine of the 26 lots in Tranquility Court completed and sold with No. 10 currently under construction with the remaining fully ready to be built. “We’re off and running and there is a lot of interest,” Bill said. “We’re part of the silver tsunami. It’s an era we’re going through and this project and product fits with that demographic.” There have been other projects in the area that have ventured into the maintenance-free home arena, but Double B has a successful formula that makes it the areas top choice. “What we’ve tried to do is keep it very simple,” Bill said. “The homeowner owns the real estate just like they would if they owned a house anywhere else in Maryville. The difference is that we have the homeowners association that takes care of the outside maintenance in regards to lawn care (fertilization and mowing) and even the water bill for the sprinkler system. The homeowner’s association even takes care of all of the snow removal. “If you’re someone that travels dur-

From its zero entry into structure from the garage and front door to wider doors, minimal hallways and an open concept these homes have all the convenience one needs. Each home can be custom designed and multiple interior features can be added including a basement, however, to maintain a consistent character throughout the community, all exterior appearances such as stone, stucco, siding, window types and roof pitches are

kept the same. “We’re very flexible as to floor plans and other finishes,” Bill said. “The size can be whatever they want it to be with a minimum of 1,500 square feet. Besides beautiful homes, Double B Development has commercial property opportunities available with Main Street frontage as well as other residential properties. Double B recently started a partnership with the Maryville R-II School District, specifically with the Northwest Technical School Building Trades program to construct a new home in the Harmony Hill subdivision. For more information on Tranquility Court, or any of the other projects being undertaken by Double B Development contact Bill Ingels at 660-3730367.

Jon Nickerson, owner of Geist Heating & Air Conditioning in Maryville, stands beside a Carrier display unit at the business’ office and shop building at 507 N. Buchanan St. Specializing in heating and cooling systems for both residential and commercial structures, Geist has performed HVAC installations for such buildings as the Schneider Performing Arts Center at Maryville High School, the Maryville Housing Authority equipment replacement, the Nodaway County Administration Center, the Alumni House addition at Northwest Missouri State University and the Maryville municipal wastewater treatment plant.

Geist keeps customers comfortable

507 N. Buchanan • Maryville, MO 660-582-5631

Comfort, efficiency are hallmarks for century-old heating, cooling business MARYVILLE, Mo. — One of Maryville’s oldest businesses, Geist Heating & Air Conditioning, was founded in 1906, when Lloyd Henry Geist opened a sheet metal shop. Today, the business, located at 507 N. Buchanan St. just northwest of the downtown square, still does custom sheet metal work, but is best known as a major local contractor specializing in the installation of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems for both new construction and existing structures. The business was purchased from Rob Geist approximately 8 years ago by current owner Jon Nickerson, who started out with the company as an installer and service technician in 1998. Though no longer in the Geist family, the business’ core strategy has remained the same, the installation and maintenance of Carrier brand heating and cooling

systems with an emphasis on new and existing residential structures. While single-family home builders and owners make up the heart of Geist’s customer base, Nickerson said, the company takes on a considerable number of commercial projects as well. Installations that will be familiar to most Maryville residents include the Schneider Performing Arts Center at Maryville High School, the Maryville Housing Authority equipment replacement, the Nodaway County Administration Center, the Alumni House addition at Northwest Missouri State University and the Maryville municipal wastewater treatment plant east of town. The in-house sheet metal operation remains active as well, and the business fabricates its own metal ductwork. Other custom sheet metal orders over the years have included copper roofs, chimney tops, grain bin

doors and tractor and combine components. In addition to Nickerson, the shop has six full-time employees who so far this year have completed more than 50 heating/air conditioning installations and retrofits. Besides serving scores of customers annually, Nickerson said the business has worked steadily to keep abreast of the latest HVAC technology through handson training events, webinars and supplier support materials. Technology-driven developments in the industry, he said, have led to such improvements as programmable thermostats, “zone systems” that allow for varied temperature levels in different parts of the same house or business, and the ability to change climate control settings remotely via cell phone. The computer age has transformed the heating and air conditioning business in

a number of ways, Nickerson said, especially in terms of improving comfort levels while, at the same time, boosting efficiency and saving customers money on their utility bills. In other words, the heating and cooling business has come a long way from the days of fuel-hungry furnaces and window-mounted AC units. And Nickerson said the challenges involved in bringing advanced climate systems to customers is one of the things that makes his job rewarding. “It’s the problem solving,” he said, “fixing somebody’s issue. Everybody who calls here has a problem, and our job is to find a solution. … You never know what the day is going to bring. “You can have the best equipment in the world, but if you don’t get the right amount of air to the right place, it’s no good.” Geist Heating & Air Conditioning can be reached at 660-582-5631.

Ax-cellent entertainment Timbearcats provides opportunity for stress relief, fun

There’s only one place in Maryville where no matter your age or physical ability you can feel like a lumberjack. That place is Timbearcats Axe Throwing, located at 218 N. Main St. Axe throwing sounds like an activity for the big and burly or rough and tumble, but just about anyone, whether 10-years-old or 100-years-old,can let off a little steam and have some fun. Timbearcats is a fun and easy activity that is great for date night, team building activities, family functions, birthday parties or just about any occasion. Timbearcats doesn’t just offer the traditional ax throwing option of hurling your hatchet toward a circle. While that is an option, Timbearcats also provides so much more thanks to its digital format. Instead of targets being painted on wood, a project shines the target on the wood post ends. “We project the targets so you’re not stuck playing one game, you have multiple to choose from,” owner Shaun Thornton said. “We want to keep the experience as likable as possible and let people really have a lot of fun with it.” Some of the games offered are Tictac-toe and a zombie slaying format

The targets the hatchets are hurled at offer a higher stick ratio to help make sure that when a thrower hits the target its more likely to stay. “It’s frustrating if you go and you throw four or five times and it just hits and comes off,” he said. “Ours you can throw almost at any different angle and it will stick.” Timbearcats also has a bounce-back system it has implemented for safety to keep the hatchet ricochets from coming back at the thrower. Timbearcats will be forming league play in early fall with signups likely beginning sometime in August that will consist of two-person teams facing off against each other in best of five matches over an eight week period. Timbearcats is currently open from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursdays, from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays, noon to 11 p.m. on Saturdays and from 2 to 9 p.m. on Sundays. Coenen Electric and Personal Touch Lighting offer high quality service, products The professionals at Coenen Electric have been providing high quality service to residents, businesses and industries of northwest Missouri and southwest Iowa for more than 30 years. It was during those early days, customers of Coenen Electric had to go elsewhere for the lighting products to put in their businesses and homes. Tired of their customers struggling to find quality products and the desire of customers to shop locally, the husband and wife tandem of Gary and Becky Coenen opened up Personal Touch Lighting in 1996 to fulfill their customers lighting and accessory needs and making them a one-stop shop for service and products. Coenen Electric has completed countless jobs in the area, many of which local residents are familiar: projects at Conception Abbey, including the all new seminarian dormitory currently under construction, as well as numerous

Local business offers event decor, tuxedo rental Turn on Facebook or other social media platforms and you see it everywhere. Brides are trying to sell the decor they bought for their special day. While the decor is beautiful, it often has no other use than for that day. If they are lucky, they might get half of what they paid for it let alone the hassle of trying to meet up with the buyer as well as the safety issue of meeting with strangers. Something Borrowed Maryville Event Decor & Tux Rental, located at 103 S. Main St., hopes to resolve those issues all at once. Having had this idea building in the back of her mind for several years, owner Rosemary Stiens took the copius amount of candlesticks she bought for her daughter’s wedding to be the catalyst to bring this idea to fruition. Something Borrowed Maryville became much more after encouragement of the former owner of Shannon Renee’s Formal Wear and took on tuxedo rental. Renee said there was a need in this area and hoped that it would continue and she was right as Something Borrowed Maryville is the area’s top source for tuxedos and formal wear. Stiens emphasized that decor rental is not just for weddings. Decor may be added to any event such as anniversaries, reunions, club meetings, birthdays or award ceremonies to make it feel a little more special. Specializing in head table decor while having enough inventory to complement it is the main focus of the inventory at Something Borrowed Maryville. It is also Stiens’ hope that those in charge of an event will make an event out of the planning itself. She said anyone looking to rent can feel free to bring a crew, come in and use the her tables and decor to practice with. She also welcomes them bringing any decor already purchased to practice with. Planning for events can be stressful and overwhelming. Something Borrowed Maryville offers a chance to set a sample table up first, know exactly the amount of each item needed and then focus on other important details. In the near future, Something Borrowed Maryville intends to be a onestop shop for event décor, tuxedos as well a small venue available for events like rehearsal dinners or any other
