Philanthropy Across a Community Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nodaway County began in 2007. This philanthropic organization stands behind the mission, “to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported, one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.”

“It’s good to live in a community where the businesses obviously care about the people, not just their bottom line,” said Lynette Harbin, program director.

“The local media launched a community-wide awareness of BBBS, and many businesses support our biggest fundraiser of the year, Bowl for Kids’ Sake, with donations of cash and prizes.”

Currently, 45 big-andlittle pairs exist in Nodaway County, and many of those “bigs” are employed by local businesses right here in Maryville. These big brothers and sisters enjoy activities with their “littles,” as they teach them important life values.

Matt Gaarder understands the importance of “thinking green.” Rapid Refill specializes in remanufacturing and refilling inkjet and laser toner cartridges for printers, copiers, fax machines, and allin-one machines. He also accepts old electronics that are ready to be recycled.

“Some cartridges can be remanufactured four to eight times,” Gaarder said.

“If you look at how many cartridges are sold each day and how many could be remanufactured, you’d see how important it would be in the long run.”

Public Safety is a Top Priority Maryville is unique in that it has a Public Safety Department instead of separate police and fire departments. This concept combines both disciplines into one department, as a way to share tasks, crosstrain employees, and reduce costs while providing a high level of service.

“Maryville is one of perhaps three or four such departments in the state, and one of but a handful in the country,” said Keith Wood, Public Safety Director for the City of Maryville.

The city’s Public Safety Department currently employs 20 public safety officers specializing in law enforcement, firefighting.

Thirty volunteers and a communications dispatch staff help make up an efficient Public Safety Department.

Maryville Serves as County Hub Maryville is the county seat and business hub of Nodaway County. Fifteen towns with populations of less than 1,000 surround this city, which means Maryville is also responsible for employing much of the county.
