Not so dandy

Dandelions sprout along a grassy strip adjoining South Main Street in Maryville. The hardy yellow flowers of the genus Taraxacum are loved by children, detested by homeowners and a perennial sign of spring in local yards, parks and vacant lots.

In anticipation of the resurfacing of East First Street this summer by the Missouri Department of Transportation, Greg Nielson of the Maryville Public Works Department, Tuesday, tightened the bolts securing a newly relocated fire hydrant just east of the South Vine Street intersection with First. Some 75 area water customers were notified in advance there would be an interruption of service while the improvements were being made.

Back in 2010, the Maryville City Council, in an attempt to ramp up a municipal beautification initiative, designated the coneflower as this town’s official blossom. And while cornflowers are certainly attractive and popular with household gardeners here, come April there is really only one bloom that rules on the ground in local yards, parks and open spaces. Yes, love it or hate it, the ubiquitous dan-

delion is back. Most homeowners, of course, class dandelions as noxious weeds, not flowers, and dedicated lawn artists pursuing the goal of golf course-like swards of bluegrass often start seeing red as the little yellow blooms pop up overnight and greet the morning glistening complacently with dew. As disasters go, a healthy crop of dandelions sprouting in a well-kept yard is hardly the worst of catastrophes. But those who decide that the yellow has to go should be See DANDELION, Page 12

Villa apartments add senior housing By JIM FALL

Construction has begun in earnest on the new $3.1 million Villas at the Summit Phase II project which will provide 24 new twobedroom rental apartments in the Maryville market. The new housing designed for senior citizens 55 years old and older will be located north of the existing Villas at the Summit Phase I complex situated south of South Hills Drive between Burris Road and Aurora Avenue. Developer D. Kim Lingle of MBL Development Co., Kansas City, said this week the project should be completed in “six to seven months with decent weather.” The Maryville City Council approved Lingle’s application for the project in August 2012. Since preliminary groundwork was completed last fall, “We’ve sat for four or five months in snow and ice,” Lingle said. “Please just pray for some good weather for us now.” The majority of the work in progress is related to preparing the

site for the five apartment buildings and a maintenance building. City inspectors checked the initial footing pourings earlier this week, according to Maryville Public Works Director C.E. Goodall. The buildings in the new complex, which will have the same exterior appearance as the existing units, will consist of three six-plex buildings, a four-plex and a duplex, according to Lingle’s plans. Two of the individual units will be designed to accommodate handicapped renters. There will be a total of 48 parking spaces, half of which will be covered. Each 900-square-foot apartment will have two bedrooms and be furnished with all appliances and include laundry hookups, Lingle said. Individual rentals, based on median income figures in Nodaway County, will range from $410 to $440. The rates are established by the Missouri Housing Development Corp., Lingle said. Senior housing is one of the primary needs identified in Maryville’s recently accepted
