Bargain hunters search through clothes, toys and other merchandise inside Bonnie Sybert’s garage during the Highway 48 Yard Sale on Friday. This is the third year for the event, which boasted 23 sales, the most ever.
From baby clothes to VCRs, from dressers to prom dresses — almost anything anyone might need could be found along Highway 48 last weekend. On Friday and Saturday, 23 different yard sales popped up along the two-lane for this rural community’s third-annual Highway 48 Yard Sale. The sales were scattered from the Highway 71 junction all the way to Whitesville, a nine-mile stretch of pavement. Most of those holding the sales live along the roadside and simply agreed a while back that putting their used stuff on the market on the same day helps bring in more customers. “When the community does it, you have a better turnout,” said Sarah Cole, who lives nearly a mile down a gravel road from the
highway itself. “People don’t come out in the country unless there are several sales to make it worth their drive.” Getting the word out, say other sellers, is the key. “I just talk to the neighbors and see if they’re interested or not,” said Bonnie Sybert, who organized the event. “This is our third year, and it’s grown every year. I take flyers around letting people know when we’re going to do it. After that, they call me and we advertise, then here we go.” One of the draws is selection, and some sellers like to coordinate in order to offer their merchandise at a single, larger location. “It’s mostly my children, and one of my son’s friends and the neighbor brought some things,” Sybert said. “I’ve got stuff from all over.” Of course, some of the sellers are also customers. “I’m a garage saler myself,” Cole See YARD SALES, Page 3

Teacher’s pet, kids’ pets have their day at school By TONY BROWN News editor
Not in a bad way, you understand, but things just went to the dogs Friday at St. Gregory’s School in Maryville during “pet show-and-tell,” a spring ritual during which kids and their parents show off the family’s best furry friend. Fourth-grade teacher Mary Sobotka organized the event for her grade level and brought along a four-and-a-half-month-old St. Bernard puppy named “Bosley,”

the most recent in a series of St. Bernard’s she and her husband, Bryan “Barney” Sobotka, have owned over the years. “Today is National Pet Day,” Sobotka said, “And our kids are just like any kids. They like animals. This is like a reward for them, and it’s such a nice day, so everything worked out.” Of course, not every child owns a pet, or was able to bring their pet to school, but Sobotka said those who couldn’t display a real animal brought in favorite stuffed toys or pictures of their

dogs and cats from home. Bosley, who though still only a puppy, was one of the biggest dogs on the playground. The breed is widely known for both its size and heroic character and has been celebrated for its traditional role as a rescue animal in the rugged Italian and Swiss Alps. The Sobotkas’ dog, however, is unlikely to carry a cask of brandy to an avalanche victim anytime soon. “They call them work dogs,
