ON THE STREET
Continuing with good local news and success of area basketball teams
There is an old saying associated with the month of March and now having entered another month in 2017 we will see if that saying comes true. It is said that if March comes in like a lion it will go out like a lamb. The lion portion is over and came in like a lion if you recall last week. Now, let’s hope the lamb part proves true also.
Chuck Haney
Public Relations
On the news side, as most know in the city of Chillicothe we have lost our city administrator Ike Holland who resigned and is heading to Minnesota, and the city clerk and I have lost our administrative assistant Tammy Midgyett who recently left to accept a job with director Barb Burton and the PATCH program at the Chillicothe Correctional Center. But on the plus side there are some good things happening in our city. Last week we wrote about Main Street Chillicothe obtaining the Mata building and one of the pluses of that that people loved to hear is that the old ugly wall on the south side of the building at Clay and Washington is probably going to be graced with the familiar and very popular Graham’s Mill and Grand River scene. First an update on J’s Burger Dive. The business, in the former Quiznos building next door to Anytime Fitness in the Stoneybrook Shopping Center in south Chillicothe, is expected, if all goes well with getting their signage in place, and hiring and training the rest of the staff, to swing its doors open Wednesday or Thursday, March 8 or 9. Meanwhile, construction work continues and it won’t be long before the walls go up at the new Blackwater Restaurant & Lounge at First and Washington. It is located across from the Sliced Bread building and
west across the street from Wabash BBQ. Owner Steve Waits stopped by last week to give me an update. We confirmed that the sale of the McDonald’s Resturants in Chillicothe, Trenton, Bethany and Cameron is official and the new owners have taken over. We have attempted several times to reach out to the new owners but have been unsuccessful but we will keep trying. We confirmed the sale through the local McDonald’s office in Chillicothe which will be closed by the end of the month, leaving vacant retail space and a beautiful upstairs loft. Al and Cathie Habiger had owned the four McDonald stores for a number of years as well as six others in St. Joseph and one in Mound City. The six in St. Joseph and the one in Mound City are now owned and managed by the Habiger’s son Chris, who just recently completed building the newest model of a McDonald’s Drive in north St. Joseph on the Belt. Visited with Lonnie Sewell about his business operation and some announcements about the former old Orscheln’s building on south Washington next to Golden Corral which recently completed remodeling on the inside. Mr. Sewell told me he has divided the inside of the
10,000 square foot building into two 2,500 square foot units and one 5,000 square foot unit. He has leased one of the 2,500 units to a franchise owner and is working to complete the other 2,500 and hopeful of finding a retail business for the 5,000 square-foot space. He said the final remodeling and clean-up of the building and surrounding property has included insulation, including the ceiling areas by Boley and Boley Insulation Wayne and Susan Cunningham of rural Chillicothe have sold their concrete business, Missouri Mobile Concrete, in Chillicothe and Trenton after 40 years at the Chillicothe location. Fisher Concrete Services of Sedalia, who the Cunninghams were friends with because of their association in Missouri Concrete Association, purchased the Chillicothe and Trenton operations. “Knowing the Fishers and their business in Sedalia we were certain they would be a good fit for Chillicothe and Trenton and their employees,” said the Cunninghams in an exclusive interview I had with them last week. The Cunninghams, who have been very active in the community with service organizations, Chamber, etc., said they plan to continue that service and be involved

Chuck Haney’s On the Street Continued from Page 5 visiting Chillicothe last week. Her tour guide was Crystal Narr, executive director of the Chillicothe Chamber of Commerce. Other stops included the courthouse and other officials in city hall. The past couple of weeks I have had the opportunity on my Chatting With Chuck morning radio show The Wave (KUHL 105.9FM) to interview Ron Wilder who is one of those working on the Grand River Multi-Purpose Center building fund campaign and with Micah Landes, executive director of the Main Street Chillicothe program. They have really been very interesting
programs. Two more special programs are upcoming. Tomorrow (Thursday, March 8) I will have Crystal Narr, the executive director of the Chillicothe Area Chamber of Commerce as my guest and the following Thursday, March 16, I will have Presiding Commissioner Ed Douglas as a guest. I hope you can join us then or on any Thursday at 8 a.m. on The Wave. I want to congratulate Coach Darren Smith, his coaching staff of Terry McKiddy and Margie Albertson and the entire varsity roster for a great season; a conference championship; a third consecutive District title and a 25-2 mark so far and the
Lady Hornets aren’t done. Congrats also to district champions Trenton girls coach Brian Upton, Southwest Livingston County girls coach Julie Bothwell, Meadville boys coach Drew Nier and Braymer boys. Trenton is playing in the quarterfinals, as is Meadville, while Chillicothe is in the sectionals and Braymer and Southwest lost in the sectional round. While not in the immediate area, you can add the North Mercer girls to that district title and state list. For a special announcement from The Post, make sure you turn to the next page — Page 8. I have already told you more than I know.

A Slice of Life
A look at how the NMSA came about
The origins of the North Missouri Sportsman’s Alliance are really kind of all over the place, starting I believe late in the fall of 2005 when Kyle Hibner dropped by my office at Farmers’ Electric Cooperative in Chillicothe. I had first met Kyle when we worked together on the banquet committee for the North Central Missouri Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. I first met Kyle when we worked together on the banquet committee for the North Central Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Chapter. Kyle, who operates a popular taxidermy enterprise, and his wife, Angela, had been very active in working with the Chillicothe High School Hunting & Fishing Club. The Hibners had been very involved in helping the local club promote and conduct a fund raising outdoor show, which featured companies that specialized in fishing, hunting and any
other outdoor activity you could think of. Kyle and I had talked several times previously about possible changes in the outdoor show that would hopefully improve the quality of the show, as well as, increase the attendance for the event. Shortly after he arrived in my office he dropped a bit of a bombshell on me by asking if I would consider taking over putting the outdoor show together. Over the years, I had discussed with friends and fellow outdoor enthusiasts that I thought an organization, comprised of officers representing each of the locally-based wildlife chapters, could make a difference in promoting all aspects of The Great Outdoors. After my conversation with Kyle, I contacted all of the local outdoor chapters to see if they would be interested in forming such an organization. At that time, there were four outdoor

chapters based out of Chillicothe. You had chapters representing Ducks Unlimited, the National Wild Turkey Federation, Quail Forever and Whitetails Unlimited. As it turns out, all of the chapters were interested in forming a new organization. And so, the North Missouri Sportsman’s Alliance (NMSA) was created. We began putting the NMSA together during the winter of 2006. As a group, we began working to put on an outdoor show, which was held each year in the confines of the Field House at the Chillicothe High School. In 2008, we filed the appropriate papers with the State of Missouri and the Internal Revenue Service to become a non-profit organization. The NMSA sponsored the Outdoor Classic for a number of years. The area response was pretty good, in terms of local and area merchants purchasing booth spaces. There was a small

fee charged for attending the event and all profits were split between the NMSA and the Chillicothe High School Hunting & Fishing Club. We had been pretty lucky the first couple of years that we held the Outdoor Classic. When I say “lucky”, I am referring to the weather. The Outdoor Classic was held each year in February. The last couple of years we held the event, we unfortunately ran into poor weather; especially, the last year. Area roads and highways were covered with snow and ice, making transportation to the show very difficult. As a result, we barely broke even on the outdoor show. So, the decision was made by the NMSA board of directors to no longer hold the Outdoor Classic. We had barely made enough money to pay our bills for another program that we were involved in. So, the decision was made to hold a special one-day fund raising event in which all of the profits were then donated to the hunting and fishing club. The NMSA added a little money to the pot and a donation of $2,000 was presented to the club. The other program I mentioned was the Share The Harvest program that until 2010 had been completely supported by the Missouri Department of Conservation and the Conservation Federation of Missouri. In 2010, the NMSA began sharing in the costs of the Share The Harvest program in Carroll, Daviess, Linn and Livingston counties. For those of you unfamiliar with the Share The Harvest program, this allows a hunter to take a deer to participating meat lockers and donate the deer to the program. The locker then processes the venison and prepares it for area food pantries to distribute to the less fortunate in the area. It
Steve Shoot is a wonderful program that is truly making a difference for those who are truly in need. The donation by the NMSA means the venison donation by the hunter won’t cost the hunter a dime. Processing costs have gone up in recent years and the difference provided by the NMSA makes the process easier on the generosity of participants. The NMSA feels the hunter already has enough money tied up in equipment, camo clothing, firearms, ammo and more. Since 2010, the NMSA has helped pay for the processing of 1,755 deer. If you put a 50-pound average on each deer donated to the Share The Harvest program since the NMSA has been involved, that would bring the overall total weight to 87,750 of venison. That’s just under 43.9 tons of quality red meat donated to area food pantries in the four counties over the last seven hunting seasons. By the end of the 2017 deer season, the NMSA will have provided the program over $20,000 in assistance. A few years ago the

NMSA began conducting an Outdoor Fun Day. The event is held each fall at the Livingston County Fairgrounds. The show features a variety of seminars on hunting, fishing, dog training, trapping and even outdoor cooking. Due to competition with a Chautauqua event and a youth soccer tournament, the NMSA is beginning to look at other options in its attempt to provide quality outdoor information. In 2016, the NMSA held a non-competitive fishing derby for area kids. A total of 54 youngsters attended the event. Each participant received a fishing lure when they registered and a drawing was held at the end of the fishing derby for more fishing items, including rods and reels, lures, tackle boxes and more. Everyone received something at the end of the day, with the exception of one young lady. We had run out of fishing stuff to give away. The young lady had also been sneaking up on me throughout the morning and she several times was quite successful in grabbing my cap and running around the fairgrounds laughing as I tried to catch her. I offered the bright orange-colored hat to her as a prize and she kindly accepted the cap. The fishing derby this year will be held Saturday, June 3, at the pond located on the west side of The Baptist Home. The Baptist Home is situated in north Chillicothe, right on U.S. Highway 65. More will be announced in the near future on this fun event. The NMSA is attempting to provide quality family events for all ages. If any of you would like to get involved in the organization please feel free to contact me at: shooter@greenhills. net or (660) 752-8010. The NMSA web site can be found at nomosportall.com
