Reviews mixed on E15 fuel policy By STEVE HARTMAN Staff writer

Northwest Missouri State University student Kale Allen fills up his car with E10 gasoline at the Shop & Hop convenience store on South Main. Consumers like Allen could be paying 5 to 7 cents a gallon less by buying E15 gasoline as soon as May 30 under a new policy being pushed by Gov. Jay Nixon.

Missouri motorists could be able to buy a higher-percentage blend of ethanol gasoline as early as this summer because of a new policy being pushed by Gov. Jay Nixon over the unsuccessful objections of some lawmakers. The state has long been a leading promoter of ethanol, a corn-based fuel that is blended with regular petroleum gasoline. Missouri was among the first states in 2006 to mandate that most fuel contain 10 percent ethanol, a mixture known as E10. But the proposed policy would allow gas stations to sell a 15 percent ethanol blend — called E15 — and that has sparked debate because of the way the measure is to be implemented. E15 isn’t being introduced via state, as was the case with E10, but rather under a Missouri Department of Agriculture rule change championed by Nixon. In a written statement to The Associated Press, the governor said he’s pleased the rule finally will be taking effect. “Expanding the use of renewable

fuels like E15 is a proven strategy for boosting our nation’s energy independence and bringing more dollars back to farming communities across Missouri,” Nixon said. The price of E15 could be several cents a gallon cheaper than the E10 gasoline currently dispensed from most pumps. That could make it attractive to consumers. It also could increase the demand for corn, benefiting farmers. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved the use of E15 for most vehicle models manufactured from 2001 forward. But not everyone agrees with Nixon about the benefits of E15. Many vehicle manufacturers warn that it could harm engines and void the warranties of vehicles not specifically designed to handle fuels with higher ethanol contents. Reactions are mixed locally as well. “From what I’ve learned from our mechanics and others I’ve talked with, engine damage is a legitimate concern,” said James Teaney, manager of the transportation fleet at Northwest Missouri State University. “I don’t have any vehicles currently in our fleet that I would be comfortable fueling with E15, See E15 Page 6

MTV comedians to perform at Northwest MARYVILLE, Mo. — Comedians Andrew Schulz, Jamie Lee and Chris Distefano of MTV’s “Guy Code” and “Girl Code” shows will appear at Northwest Missouri State University at 7 p.m. Friday, March 14, in Charles Johnson Theater. The Student Activities Council event is free and open to both students and the general public. The theater is located on the first floor of the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building across the street from Bearcat Arena. “We chose to bring these particular comedians to campus because

their material is relative to college life, and students can relate,” said Jake Rosenquist, SAC’s director of entertainment. “We expect students to get the chance to interact with the comedians and possibly bring up some questions they may have. It is also a good chance to see some cast members of an MTV show.” For non-MTV watchers, here’s a quick rundown of each of the comedians and their careers to date: • Andrew Schulz is a New York native who in 2012 hosted the MTV European Movie Awards and has also made appearances

on MTV2’s “Wild N’ Out,” and “Charlemagne and Friends.”
