Fire destroyed a rural home east of Burlington Junction Wednesday evening. The home’s resident, Ronald Marriott, discovered the fire as he returned home from work at about 5:30 p.m. No one was in the home at the time the blaze was discovered and reported. Fire-fighting units from West Nodaway and Clearmont responded to the fire call and Nodaway County ambulance had a unit standing by, as well. By the time units arrived on the scene, the home, located at 23967

170th Street, was completely engulfed in flames and the roof had collapsed. “By the time we arrived, about all we could do was contain the fire within the area of the house,” West Nodaway firefighter/first responder Herb Snodderly said. “There was no chance to save the house or contents.” Units stayed on the scene for about three hours. While the cause of the blaze is yet to be determined, Snodderly said that when Marriott arrived at the house, the fire seemed to be burning hottest in the area where a propane heater was located inside.

Home Show offers variety, entertainment By KAITY HOLTMAN Staff writer

The Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce invites community members to celebrate spring at the Northwest Missouri Home and Better Living Show this Sunday at the Maryville Community Center. The show is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 50 local businesses will be set up and available to talk about their products and services. Merchants range across categories of home and garden, automotive, home improvement and decor, healthy living, fashion, specialty food and more. This is the fourth year for this event, but only the first for Melanie Smith, executive director for the Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce, who took over the position last summer. “We have had an overwhelming response from our vendors and the event will truly have something for everyone,” Smith said. “The Home Show is a great

way to spend a Sunday afternoon with your family.” In addition to the many vendors, the show will also feature a bounce house from K&M Amusements, concessions from Maryville HyVee, and a stage with performances and demonstrations throughout the day. The stage will feature child’s entertainer, Jim “Mr. Stinky Feet” Cosgrove at 1 p.m. on the main stage. Jim has been performing for more than 15 years and makes the children the stars of his shows through what he calls an approachable style and ability to immediately connect with the audience. A flat-screen TV will be given away at the end of the day, and many booths will be hosting their own drawings, too. Committed quilters

Seven women come every Thursday afternoon to Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church in Maryville to make quilts, including (From left) Pam Myers, Phyllis Abbott, Marcia Droegemueller and Pat Bobzien. Here, the ladies present one of the quilts they worked on for the Lutherans Women’s Missionary Group. Total, they have made 28 quilts, mainly out of scraps. Because they made them out of scraps, there was no out of pocket cost from anyone to make the quilts. They will send the quilts to Lutheran World Relief, a group that sends aid to those around the world that are in need. SUBMITTED PHOTO
