ON THE STREET

Etzenhouser honored by firefighters

If one wanted to be motivated to smile and be in a good mood, the place for them to be would have been last week’s Chillicothe Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon meeting at the Country Club. It was a capacity crowd that enjoyed nearly an hour of fun and motivation courtesy of Dr. Tim Crowley, a well-known inspirational speaker. He headlined a program entitled “How to use emotional intelligence to succeed at work and win at life. If you missed, see if you can learn where Dr. Tim will next be speaking and see if you can attend his program. Members of the Chamber certainly enjoy the new format of luncheon programs that have been occurring for more than a year now and Dr. Tim Crowley was one of those examples last week. Those present received a copy of his topic that led with “What everyone needs to know.” His discussion and group interaction focused on coaching the attendees on the importance of emotional intelligence in the workplace. He also discussed ways to communicate better; become a stronger leader; and build a team of employees that work with passion toward a common goal to improve business. From the Post ownership and staff and a Facebook post, I quote from last week’s Open House and Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting: “Where do we start… THANK YOU to the Chamber, area merchants, family, friends and awesome community we are so blessed to live in. Your support truly means everything to us. As was said by Owner Phil Cobb, “Our purpose is to offer North Missouri the best shopper reaching over 22,000 homes each week. Thank you so much for making it possible.” Mr. Cobb also asked each of those present to introduce themselves and who they were representing … “I want to know who each of you are,” he remarked. You know we love “good news” stories and events and lately folks have kept our line hot as well as dropping off info at The Post office or giving info to the ladies. To tie in with the open house, The Post and

this column, we all are really excited about having Steve Shoot and Julie Ashbrook, a couple of longtime journalists, join the staff to do feature writing, the Slice of Life and to assist with special editions.

Speaking of a “good news” story, how about the surprise and gift done recently by the Dawn Fire Fighter Association. Frank Etzenhouser of Dawn recently retired as a first responder for the Dawn firefighters and I had the op-

portunity to speak with him about his retirement, years of service and the jacket that was presented to him by the firefighters group. Frank retired from the Kansas City Police Department after 25 years of service and moved to Dawn where he spent 10 years as a first responder. Chillicothe Fire Chief Darrell Wright told me that Mr. Etzenhouser also taught EMT classes at the Grand River Technical School and also was a CPR instructor. “He was a really excellent teacher and enjoyed what he was doing,” Chief Wright said. What does Frank take with him from his years of service for the Dawn department. “The fact that people were so appreciative … that was a good feeling. What else he remembered is that he worked four fatalities and that was the toughest part of the job. He said being hardened by his police work in Kansas City helped him get through a lot of things. The Etzenhouser’s have three grown children — a daughter, Jennifer Reeter of Chillicothe; a daughter, See CHUCK Page 7

Mrs. Reeter’s husband is an assistant chief with the Chillicothe Fire Department. I have some first-hand information on the upcoming Chillicothe BBQ Contest (both an open and novice division) from local director of the event, Carl McBee.

He sent me an email this past week telling me that Chris Marks, an eight-time Champion of the American Royal BBQ cookout and winner of more than 40 national BBQ contests will be here for the Chillicothe contest and also will be doing free cooking classes to the public and demos of locally manufactured Good-one smokers. As time passes before the early summer event in

Simpson Park there will be more announcements made. Sponsorships are still available and you contact McBee at 660-973-1953 or Dave at Country Carpets & Furniture or Jeff at Hy-Vee gas. Entry forms for contestants can be found on their website at www.facebook. com/chillibbq or you can pick up an entry at Hy-Vee Gas or Country Carpets. See CHUCK Page 10
