ON THE STREET

Keeping up with business, basketball

I always enjoy starting my column with a weather note. I knew I was going to have the opportunity to write about winter or a snow before March concluded but I didn’t think I would be writing about a possible tornado, storm sirens, lightning, thunder and rain — all of which occurred last week in the Chillicothe area and Northwest Missouri.

both communities got hit last week by tornadoes. With that said it makes me feel so good as a resident of Chillicothe that we have Darrell Wright as our emergency management director and fire chief. Our sirens sounded last week during the storm for about 20 minutes or so and the next day (Wednesday) they all worked when sounded during the statewide tornado drill, under the direction of the National Weather Service. And, of all of sudden we have another hour of daylight as we moved the clocks forward an hour

Sunday (hope you remembered). Just so you know, the official beginning of Spring is Sunday, March 20. The seasons of Spring and Fall are my favorites. This Thursday, March 16 The Post will be hosting an official Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting at its business office at 705 Webster (next door to Silver Moon Plaza) and The Post owner Phil Cobb will be present for this special event that takes place at 11 a.m. I hope you can stop by and meet the owner and the staff, and enjoy some refreshments.

But now I wonder what folks think about our famous ground hog and his predictions. I am still trying to figure out why Oak Grove and Smithville had not been testing their sirens and they were not in service when

It was Wednesday, Jan 18 that the first publication of The Post came off the press, and the success and growth along with the expansion of circulation numbers and staff has been awesome. To know that when you place your advertisement in The Post that it reaches your mailbox as well as 22,000 others in seven counties, it is no wonder it is what folks are talking about. Chuck Haney’s On the Street for March 15, 2017 Continued from Page 5 Last week you got a little taste of what’s to come as we move through each month when you got to read a feature written by Steve Shoot. It appeared as “The Slice of Life” feature sponsored by Investors Community Bank of Chillicothe. It has been announced by Owner Phil Cobb that two well-known former newspaper and longtime community residents have joined The Post team and will be doing feature stories as well as helping with special editions. Last week Steve Shoot made his debut with The Post as a feature writer. He also will be doing outdoor columns as well as assisting with the upcoming outdoor edition. He was Vice-President of Marketing, Corporate Relations for Farmers’ Electric Cooperative and has an extensive background in communications, public relations, marketing

and economic development. A few years back Mr. Shoot was news editor at the Cameron Citizen-Observer and the Chillicothe Constitution-Tribune. Julie Ashbrook retired last year as Director of the Chillicothe Fine Arts program, a position she held for seven years. She was the advertising director of the C-T in the 70s and wrote features and worked on special sections in the 80s for the newspaper. She is married to Tom Ashbrook, a CPA for 40 years with Harden-Cummins-Moss & Miller, LLC and they have two grown daughters. Yes, that new sign on the front of the building tells it all, J’s Burger Dive — in the Stoney Brooke Shopping Center across from the Comfort Inn & Suites and next door to Anytime Fitness — is open for business. I can’t wait to “Dive-In” for a big cheeseburger and those delicious fries. And, next week I am cer-

tain the owner has another bit of good news to pass along in an exclusive announcement in this column. Here and there —The annual Knights of Columbus fish dinners got off to a fantastic start on Friday, March 3 with what is thought by those who work it each year as a record evening. Principal Pam Brobst announced in the school’s weekly bulletin that 472 meals were served opening night. Yep, I had mine and so did my daughter and other members of the family and it was delicious as always. What a deal — with fish, green beans, macaroni, chips and dessert. There is no fish dinner event on March 17 because of the fifth and sixth grade basketball tournament going on but the fish dinners will return on March 24 and 31. Remember you can walk in to the cafeteria or drive thru and pick up orders to go. I don’t know who the guy is or what he is getting paid

but for the past three weeks in all kinds of weather the guy has stood at the junction of Business 36 and U.S. 65 in Chillicothe holding a sign up for those driving the area telling of a furniture store in Trenton “Going Out of Business.” Interesting and a reminder of days gone by of the walking billboard signs. Oh, the same guy is in Trenton too at the junction of Business 65 and Highway 6.

A real tip of the hat to the Chillicothe Lady Hornets and Coach Darren Smith on a very successful basketball season. While much disappointment surrounded the one-point loss in the State Class 4 Sectional to St. Pius there were 25 wins against only three losses (all to state ranked teams); three tournament titles, and a District championship. It is a group of seniors who always will be remembered.

Trenton played late last Friday afternoon in the Class 3 third place game and lost a close one to St. Louis Lutheran-North in Columbia. But what a season the Trenton Lady Bulldogs and Coach Brian Upton had — it was a school record for wins (27), tournament titles (3), first-ever District title and first trip in school history to the Final Four. I have already told you more than I know.
