ON THE STREET

National praise for Downtown Chillicothe

Let’s see now … 80 degrees last Thursday and then snow flakes and 30 degrees last Friday … that can’t be. Right? Yes it was, but only in North Missouri. While we have lots of exciting news to tell you about our community I want to lead with some great compliments from the visiting National and Missouri Main Street programs and what they had to say about Chillicothe’s downtown. First and foremost they announced — at the conclusion of a 90-minute informational meeting and workshop held at the community room of the Livingston County Library last week — that Main Street Chillicothe is a nationally accredited community and is one of only six communities in the State of Missouri to receive such recognition. The second part of the good news was that Chillicothe has been chosen as a national semifinalist for the Great American Main Street Award (GAMSA) proving our city as having one of the best downtowns in the nation. A Main Street Chillicothe delegation will travel to Pittsburg, PA., in May for the National Main Street Conference. The two Main Street officials here last week to conduct the sessions with the Main Street Chillicothe Committees and the Main Street Board of Directors,

Chuck Haney

Public Relations

also had plenty of praise for those who direct the program here.

Norma Ramirez de Miess, Senior Main Street Program Officer of the Main Street National Center in Schertz, Texas, said that Executive Director Micah Landes and Ben White, assistant director, as well as the Main Street board and commities should give themselves “a pat on the back” for the great job they have done in making Main Street Chillicothe an award-winning city. In the past year Main Street Chillicothe helped seven businesses open downtown; awarded five façade grants with a sixth one in the works; planned two new murals for 2017 funded new wayfinding signage that was placed throughout See Chuck Page 10

Chuck Haney’s On the Street for March 1, 2017 Continued from Page 10 the downtown area and the city. Main Street also purchased a downtown building (Mata building) that had been vacant for five years to save the historic building and the block of buildings that it is located on. Renovation is currently underway and will create one resident unit on the second floor and one retail spot on the ground floor. It will produce a new business, additional jobs, and generate additional tax dollars for the city as well. There already have been inquires to rent the residence on the upper floor as well as possible tenants for the retail space. There are other accomplishments by Main Street as well as a plan for a new mural on the building at the corner pocket park at Clay and Washington. J’s Burger Dive’s Chillicothe location in the Stoneybrook Shopping Center next to Anytime Fitness is planning to open on March 4 or March 5 according to owner John Dawson. He said they are doing some final work inside and waiting on signage to arrive before they open sometime this week or by the weekend. The new burger business also has a location in Hamilton, Mo., 25 miles west and since opening there has attracted a stream of Chillicothe customers to their business located in downtown Hamilton on Highway 13. “We had a lot of Chillicothe people tell us we should come to your town and open up a similar operation and here we are,” said Dawson. They have remodeled the former Quizno’s business and after seeing how

the opening goes as well as business, they will be looking at adding a drive-thru. Next week we have more business news coming which will mark the third week and column in a row we have had great news to report about Chillicothe. You will remember last week it was the new Blackwater Restaurant & Lounge that was announced exclusively by this columnist that was being built at First and Locust Streets. Some new retail space is being completed on a building and will be announced next week as well as a longtime Chillicothe business that has been sold after 40 years here. And, we attempted to reach out to the owner of the Bejing Restaurant on Washington Street but have not been able to reach anyone. The restaurant has been closed for two weeks with a sign on the door stating they are closed for remodeling and will re-open in May. The United Methodist Church Pre-School Open Enrollment for the 201718 School Year is going on now and for openings for the Pre-K class please contact Patricia Howard, Director, at 646-2580, ext. 22 or stop by the church office at 1414 Walnut, Chillicothe. You may also get information and an application form by going to www.chillicotheumc.org and clicking on UMC Preschool. Fifth graders at Central School will be presenting a come and go Culture Fair on Friday, March 3 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. This goes along with their PBL projects (Project Based Learning) — their overall question for this event has been “By examining other

cultures, how can we make a global difference?” IN SPORTS — Drew Frizzell, Chillicothe High School graduate and the son of Lisa Frizzell and the late David Frizzell, was recently inducted into the Central Missouri University Hall of Fame in Warrensburg. Drew is a 17-time All American and is the most decorated male athlete in the history of UCM. In attendance for the ceremony were his mother, Lisa; Drew’s wife Allyson and daughter Kennedy and son Kingston; sister Marissa Biggerstaff; Chillicothe High School Ken Stull; Coach Bill Shaffer and wife Janice; Butch and Judi Shaffer; Bill and Angela Graham; Carol and Mel Gregg; Patty and Larry Rumb — Drew’s in-law and several fraternity brothers and friends. I finished up another season as the public address announcer for the North Central Missouri College Pirates and Lady Pirates in Trenton last week and the largest crowd of the season was on hand for the twin bill finale at the Ketchum Center. It was NCMC Employee Day, Wright Memorial Hospital in Trenton and Hedrick Medical Center Corporate Day; Halftime entertainment by Midwest Dance Synergy Studio of Trenton; a halftime shoot-out; Wright Memorial Halftime Shot; and entertainment by the Trenton High School Pep Band, under the direction Tim Gilham as well as Cancer Awareness Night.

Had a busy time catching some of the activities of the great grandkids — YMCA basketball at Carrollton;

boys and girls fifth-sixth grade basketball games at Bishop Hogan School and the Ballet Arts Celebration

of Dance at the Dickinson Performing Arts Center. I have already told you more than I know.
