Entertainers lined up to please crowds

MARYVILLE, Mo. — The Nodaway County Fair board recently announced this year’s event will be held July 13-15 around the downtown square.

With the theme “There’s No Time Like Fair Time,” this year’s fair will play host to several entertainers as well as a carnival all

Fun Time Shows will again bring its carnival full of games, snack foods and drinks to downtown Maryville. Presale armbands will be on sale again this

The Kids Q, among many other favorites like the pedal pull, checkers tournament, water war and parade, will be scheduled during

the three-day event and some will see a few changes.

According to Nodaway County Fair Board member Rex Wallace, the board shifted the parade start time a bit later, now starting at 10 a.m., to keep the schedule flowing right into other Saturday afternoon events like the pedal pull and more.

The board is also showcasing the Nodaway County Community Band on Thursday night of the fair with a show that starts at 7 p.m. in front of the Main Stage on the corner of Third and Market streets.

The past several fair boards have worked to bridge the gap between the Nodaway County 4-H/FFA Livestock Show and the fair since both events occur in the same week each year.

Animals were brought to the square by 4-H/FFA members to share with fairgoers.

This year, Wallace said, while there still will be livestock on the square each night, the livestock auction will be held at the Nodaway County Community Building near the airport, where the livestock show is scheduled to be held. For the last two years the auction and dinner has been held on the third floor of the Nodaway County Administration Center. Last year’s dinner saw every available seat filled, thus prompting discussions to move it to a larger space.

Entertainers

Entertainers scheduled for the stage include Dylan Gerard on Friday night and Jess Kellie Adams on Saturday night.

Gerard, an SSM Nashville artist and singer-songwriter from Macclenny, Florida, was a contestant on The Voice season 13.

According to his website, Gerard’s music style is “southern soul and the crooning styles of yester-year.” His first single, “Simple Things,” reached No. 37 on the MusicRow Country Breakout Chart and is being followed up by his second single “Please Don’t Let Me.”

For more information about Gerard, visit his website at dylangerardmusic.com. Amid a tour starting later this month, Adams will stop on Saturday, July 15, to perform as part of the Nodaway County Fair.

According to her website, the Ohio singer-songwriter is influenced by The Chicks, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride, Reba McEntire and numerous others. She grew up listening to the Grand Ole Opry with her grandfather and just as these iconic artists and their songs have influenced her life and made a

tremendous impact on her own music, Adams strives to do the same for her fans.

“I remember after one of my shows, a woman came up to me and said she wished her nephew would’ve waited one more week to hear my song,” she said. “It floored me. … I was 15 at the time and knew from that moment on, my purpose is to help others through my songs.”

International awardwinning chainsaw sculptor Chris Lantz will show off his skills carving bears, eagles, horses, herons and more during the fair.

From North Georgia, Lantz has 12 years of experience in his craft and has received numerous awards for his pieces. As a part of his family-owned business, Extreme Sculpting, Lantz has traveled with his family from Washington to New York to complete projects throughout the country. In July, he will travel to Nodaway County to share his art with fairgoers.

“One of my main goals in

carving is to make people FEEL,” he wrote on his website. “I think creating your standard bear, eagle, owl is cool and I enjoy the process, but I live for those projects where my client gives me artistic freedom and unleashes my inner creativity!”

For more about Lantz and

Extreme Sculpting, visit his website at extremesculpting.com.

The Nodaway County Fair Board will auction off around 10 pieces Lantz creates during his time in Nodaway County, noted Wallace. The details of that auction will be announced closer to the event.

Warners to lead Nodaway County Fair parade

The Forum

MARYVILLE, Mo. — The Nodaway County Fair Board recently announced Richard and Ruth Warner as this year’s Grand Marshals of the Nodaway County Fair Parade scheduled for Saturday, July 15.

The Warners, of Graham, spoke briefly with The Forum about their selection on Tuesday.

“I think it’s an honor,” Richard said. “... I think it’ll be a good deal.”

He said the vehicles are already selected by the fair board and he didn’t know what they would be riding in, but he’s hoping for the widest, softest back seat for the quick ride from campus to downtown.

“I haven’t been at the parade for probably 40 years,” Ruth said, noting that large crowds of people show up for the annual event. She and Richard agreed that it will make a big difference not having to drive in the parade.

Each year, the route has taken a similar route from College Avenue east down Fourth Street to Buchanan Street where it turns south.

The parade will start a bit later this year at 10 a.m. to help people who plan to stay downtown for afternoon events like the pedal pull and checkers tournament.

Richard joked that they must have been selected for their “good looks” and not the copious amount of service the two have provided during their lives to their community, county and country.

Biographies

Richard is a native of Hyannis,

Nebraska and is a self-employed electrical contractor with ties to many organizations in northwest Missouri.

He retired out of the U.S. Navy Seabees Reserves as a Chief Petty Officer with 24½ years of service.

Richard holds a life membership in American Legion Post 256, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 442, the Naval Enlisted Reserve As-

sociation and LaSociete 40 and 8 (the elite American Legion).

He served as mayor of Graham for seven years and police judge for 2½ years. He also served on the township board for 12 years.

Richard joined the Graham Lions Club in the spring of 2007. He served as club vice president from 2008-2009 and president in 20092010. From 2010-2011 and again

the next year, Richard served as zone chairman. He served as Lions second vice district governor from 2012-2013 and first vice district governor from 2013-2014.

From 2014-2015 and 20182019, Richard served as district governor of the Lions organization. To this day, he touts perfect attendance since joining the group.

He also attended the Great Plains Lions Leadership Institute in 2011, the USA/Canada Leadership Forum in Overland Park, Kansas, in 2013, and again in 2017 in Portland, Oregon.

Richard has also been a Boy Scout leader for 10 years and an Explorer Post Advisor for six.

He has been a trustee for the Maitland Methodist Church for 18 years, a trustee for the Nodaway County Ambulance District for eight and a 4-H leader for 14 years.

Richard has served on the Nodaway County Community Board for 40 years.

He has been active in the community projects in Graham Community Betterment and as chairman or co-chairman of the Graham Street Fair for 12 years.

Richard has been married to Ruth Jean (Groves) for 60 years. They have three children, eight grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren.

Ruth graduated from Graham High School and also Northwest Vocation school. She had been employed at the Nodaway County Health Center as administrator and later worked at the Nodaway Veterinary Clinic for more than 20 years and is now semi-retired.

Ruth was a 4-H leader for many years, was on the Nodaway County Extension Council 4-H board and the Nodaway County Health Department board.

She was a member of the Maitland Methodist Church for many years before it closed and also taught Sunday School classes. She enjoys reading and working in her yard as well as walking.

This way more people have seating to listen to the music performed by around 30 to 40 local musicians of all ages and all skill levels from throughout the county. The band was started in 2014 by Amy Haddock. For more information and the rehearsal schedule, please visit nodcoband.com.

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Fun Time Shows returns to the Nodaway County Fair this year bringing memory making rides and games.

Fun Time Shows is run by Missouri native Clint Payne, the company has been in business since the 1970s and operates across several states in the Midwest.

Payne has said that his company had trouble booking dates during the pandemic, but were able to weather the storm with help from government programs like the Paycheck Protection Program, and playing smaller venues than usual that were still holding shows.

According to Nodaway County Fair Board member Rex Wallace last year there are around 22 carnival companies working across the country. This will be the third year of a three year contract.

Those headed out to the fair can expect all the usual fun attractions, like food, games and rides.
