FUN TIME SHOWS RETURNS WITH CARNIVAL 6 - Nodaway County Fair Supplement to The Post, Tuesday, July 12, 2022

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Fun Time Shows returns to the Nodaway County Fair this year bringing magical memory making rides and games. Fun Time Shows is run by Missouri native Clint Payne, the company has been in business since the 1970s and operates across several states in the Midwest. Payne has said that his company had trouble booking dates during the pandemic, but were able to weather the storm with help from government programs like the Paycheck Protection Program, and playing smaller venues than usual that were still holding shows. According to Nodaway County Fair Board member Rex Wallace there are around 22 carnival companies working across the country. He noted that this is the second year of a three year contract. Those headed out to the fair can expect all the usual fun attractions, like food, games and rides.

Nodaway County Fair Supplement to The Post, Tuesday, July 12, 2022 - 7

Church continues annual meal for carnival employees MARYVILLE, Mo. — The unofficial kickoff to the Nodaway County Fair isn’t on July 14, but the day before, when volunteers from the First Christian Church serve a hot meal to carnival workers. This year the meal is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 13, at the church.

This year marks the second year when the meal will take place during daylight hours as a lunch. For a few years prior, the church had served a late-night breakfast to better fit workers’ schedules before they set up the carnival the night before the fair opened. But for the new carnival com-

pany hired for the first time last year, Fun Time Shows Amusement Carnival, a lunchtime meal works better. Around two to three dozen workers usually attend the meal, which the church has held for five years in order to help carnival workers feel welcomed to the community.

Motorcycle show set for Saturday at the fair

MARYVILLE, Mo. — The Nodaway County Fair Motorcycle Show is scheduled for 3 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 16 in front of the Nodaway County Administration Center, and if this year is anything like the 2021 show, there will be numerous bikes to peruse. In 2018, more than 50 motorcycles were displayed and in 2019 nearly that same amount graced Market Street with their

colorful paint jobs and beautifully shaped frames. During the most recent contests, a 1957 Triumph owned by Everett Sticken, of Pickering, took the Best in Show award. Perhaps this is the year a new bike will outshine it. For more information or a registration form, visit the Nodaway County Fair website at www.nodcofair.org.

Safety Alley opens at 5 p.m. on Thursday MARYVILLE, Mo. — This year’s Safety Alley will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 14 on Market Street just south of the Nodaway County Administration Center. The event’s focus is to offer information for children about how to be safe in their every day lives. Kids will hear from experts about a number of important safety topics, from pedestrian and vehicle safety and much more. Last year the Maryville Fire Department had a crew and truck on site for children to take a peek at. They also handed out fire hats and badges. Children will get some practice putting out a fire in a “fire house.” Those running the event will also likely have coloring books for the kids.

Sobotkas selected as grand marshals

By TRINITY COBB

‘People remember me for the ice cream’

The Forum

MARYVILLE, Mo.— Ron and Clara Sobotka of Ravenwood have been selected as grand marshals for the 2022 Nodaway County Fair Parade. “I think there’s somebody else in the county surely that deserves it more than we do,” Ron joked. The couple expressed their true sentiments, noting they are excited and honored that they were chosen to perform the grand marshal duties. “(Ron) does a lot of stuff for the community and for the communities around, being on the fire department and the rescue squad,” Clara said. “He comes in contact with a lot of

highway patrolmen and sheriff’s departments, so he’s out there and about.” Ron’s time with the fire department totals around 30 years, and he has served on the department’s board for around 25 years. He has also served on the board at his local church and on Ravenwood’s park board. Together, Ron and Clara have donated homemade ice

cream to several events and charities. “We’ve never charged for any of it. They pay for the supplies, and he donates his time and sometimes ice and sometimes salt,” Clara said. “It’s rewarding for us.” The couple has special ties to the fair, as they have provided ice cream for the fair ice cream social for four years and for the 4H Livestock Auction at the Nodaway County Administration Building for the past decade. “People remember me for the ice cream,” Ron said. To try some of the Sobotkas’ famous ice cream, visit the fair’s ice cream social at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 16 at the corner of Fourth and Market streets.
