In 2007, four Maryville residents had a dream for a summer camp-style theatrical experience for youth. It blossomed from there.

Maryville Young Players has been operating every summer since, giving area youth a chance to put together and perform a musical on a three-week rehearsal schedule.

The first show took place in the summer of 2007, when about 40 students between the second and ninth grades produced The Princess and the Pea. Since then, the troupe has performed “Junior” versions of numerous Broadway shows, including Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast, and Once on This Island.

In 2011, MYP had grown to a point where it needed more than one cast, and as a result, the company was split into two casts which doubled the number of speaking parts and performances. MYP also began offering cross-curricular classes in 2011, allowing students to go deeper into the arts to study topics such as set design, choreography, song writing, and improvisational skills.

In the summer of 2018, MYP will produce Alice in Wonderland Jr. at the Mary Linn Auditorium. Registration opens March 1. More information, including how to audition, will be available in the spring of 2018.

Throughout the venture, numerous parents and show attendees were clamoring for a similar opportunity for adults and for students who had gone through MYP but “aged out.” As a result, in 2017, MYP announced the creation of Second Stage.

Second Stage molds together community theater with the MYP formula, bringing actors of all ages together to put together a full Broadway show in only three weeks of rehearsals. The opening performance took place in July 2017, when Second Stage produced Hello, Dolly! in the new Schneider Center for the Performing Arts at Maryville High School.

Maryville affords its citizens ample opportunities to maximize their artistic, cultural and entertainment interests.

The city’s library, conveniently located on Main Street, two blocks north of the Square, offers current popular titles in traditional as well as electronic format, periodicals, magazines, CDs, videos and other materials in its expanded and updated facility.

Built in 1904 as Maryville’s post office and the beneficiary of two expansion projects, the library hosts a wide assortment of programs for children and adults. Wireless internet access is available throughout the building. The Friends of the Library is an active support group which provides financial assistance.

The Nodaway County Historical Society Museum, is home to an outstanding collection of artifacts, resource materials and a genealogical library. Self-guided tours include the main building, located at 110 N. Walnut St., the nearby Caleb Burns House and the Hickory Grove one-room school house.

The museum periodically hosts traveling exhibits from area and national museums, including The Smithsonian Institution.

The community also benefits from several smaller collections on the Northwest campus. They include the Stucky Radio and Electronic Museum in Wells Hall, the Geological Museum in the Garrett-Strong Science Building, and the Ag Museum in the Valk Building.

The Encore Series at Northwest sponsors a varied cultural entertainment series during each school year. Open to the public, Encore hosts dance and musical performances and stage productions in the 1,100-seat Mary Linn Auditorium in the Ron Houston Center for the Performing Arts on campus.

A 5,500-square-foot Studio Theater has been an integral part of the Houston Center since 2008.

The university’s annual Distinguished Lecture Series is also open to the public.

Fine art exhibits from national as well as local artists are regularly displayed in the Olive Deluce Gallery on the university campus, which also boasts an 11,000-square-foot Fire Arts Center for ceramic arts. Student and faculty recitals and performances are given in the Charles Johnson Theater on campus.

The Nodaway County community theater provides a variety of entertainment throughout the year in the Rose Theater in Downtown Maryville.

Maryville boasts active service and fraternal organizations, including Eagles and Elks lodges, Lions, Optimist and Rotary clubs. The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and their auxiliaries are also active in the county.

Maryville Business and Professional Women and Today’s Civic Women offer area women additional philanthropic outlets.

Summertime Events

The Downtown Summer Events Series, sponsored by the Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce, takes place around the Courthouse Square. It features musical and comedic acts and is highlighted by a Kids Block Party and Community Pep Rally each August.

The third weekend in July brings the Nodaway County Fair to Downtown Maryville.

Other local festivals are held in small towns throughout the county.

churches representing a broad spectrum of Christian faiths, ranging from Roman Catholic to a wide variety of Protestant denominations.

Baptist, Christian, Lutheran, Methodist and Roman Catholic student facilities are operated for Northwest Missouri State University students and there is also an Episcopal student organization.

Much of the religious outreach activity in the community is coordinated through the Maryville Ministerial Fellowship, which provides an ecumenical approach to Christian service.

The major outreach by members of the alliance is the operation of the Ministry Center, a facility that helps the less fortunate in the community. Food, clothing, home heating assistance and emergency funding are routinely made available to qualified participants.

Aside from the many churches in Maryville and throughout the county, the single most impressive religious community in the area is located in the Conception-Clyde area east of Maryville.

The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception — designated by Pope Pius XII in 1941 as one of only 33 basilicas in the United States — is the centerpiece of the Benedictine community at Conception.

Conception Abbey was founded in 1873 and designated as an abbey in 1881. Today, the abbey population numbers 65 monks who celebrate the Eucharist and Liturgy of the Hours daily.

They also staff and administer the facilities there, including the Conception Abbey, St. Benedict Monastery, Seminary College, and the Printery House, a commercial printing

business specializing in religious cards and other materials.

The monks also serve as parish priests and hospital chaplains in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph and other dioceses.

The Benedictine Convent of Perpetual Adoration located at Clyde is one of three convents for Benedictine Sisters in the United States. It houses a Religious Relics Museum containing 550 documented saint artifacts, thought to be the largest such collection in America.

The sisters produce more than 2 million altar breads weekly that are distributed across the United States and in nine foreign countries. The convent also markets “Monastery Creations,” including books, gift boxes, monastery art, music, and personal care products.

The Maryville R-II School District successfully educates the community’s young people in an atmosphere of excellence, producing results unsurpassed anywhere in the Midwest. Four foundational cores guide the district planning and programming: learning, leadership, character, and collaboration. Those high quality results are evident in many ways: test results, attendance rates, participation in extra and co curricular activities, community service projects, graduation rate, and post secondary placements.

More than 1,400 students attend Maryville R-II which is accredited by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Of its 229 employ-

ees, 169 are full-time, certified individuals. In addition to instructional staff, each school has licensed counselors and nurses to promote emotional and physical wellbeing and growth. The four district buildings also share the services of a full-time Student Resource Officer.

The student-teacher ratio throughout the district is a commendable 18-1 and more than 98 percent of all students entering the system are graduated from high school.

Inside recently expanded facilities, the top-flight Eugene Field Elementary School services more than 550 preschool through fourth-grade students in a wide variety of ways. All students have access to the internet through networked classroom computers, Chromebooks, and iPads. Students at

Maryville Middle School is a modern facility, located near the high school, and housing approximately 425 students. Maryville R-II High School also encourages its approximately 450 students to take advantage of many dual credit college and honors courses. The high school is a beneficiary of the addition of up-to-date science laboratory classrooms featuring Project Lead the Way programs. Other recent facility upgrades include construction of a 700 seat performing arts center and a secondary gymnasium/FEMA safe shelter There is more to high school than out-

standing academics offered in a modern setting, however, and Maryville Spoofhound sports teams are testimony to that.

The football team won back-to-back state football championships in 2012 and 2013 and was runner up in 2016. Numerous athletes & teams have claimed recent conference and district titles, qualifying them to participate in state competition. MHS also offers a wide variety of co and extra curricular activities: marching band, Spectrum

choir, FBLA, FFA, FCCLA, NFL, to name only a few. Participants in these activities routinely earn regional and state honors.

“What is a Spoofhound, anyway?”

The answer is best left for a full explanation from an alum or present-day coach or player. It is a unique team name, to say the least, but opponents across the state know that, year-in and year-out, the ’Hounds are a force to be reckoned with.

Northwest Technical School

serves students from the surrounding fivecounty area. Offerings in 15 different areas of specialization are designed specifically to meet the needs of area business and industry. The technical school also partners with North Central Missouri College to provide post-secondary nursing program. The adult education programs at NTS include short courses in computers, electronics, woodworking, technical skills

and self-improvement, among others.

These offerings are usually available in the evenings so they do not conflict with students’ work schedules.

Maryville elementary and middle school students also have the choice to take advantage of two private school programs:

Horace Mann Laboratory School

on the Northwest Missouri State campus provides an excellent learning environment for pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade

students. In addition to its private school atmosphere, Horace Mann also provides on-site training for education majors at the university.

St. Gregory Barbarigo Catholic School

has classes for pre-school through eighth grade in facilities that are adjacent to the church. The school’s fully certified faculty offers a comprehensive curriculum complemented by faith development.

Northwest Missouri State University

Northwest Missouri State University and Maryville — names that are synonymous with quality and culture across Missouri and throughout the Midwest. The presence of the four-year, regional state university enhances the quality of life for the city’s residents, and is a catalyst that attracts educational, cultural, political awareness and opportunities to experience the performing arts.

Northwest’s 350-acre campus is designated as Missouri’s State Arboretum.

Enrollment for the fall trimester of 2017 totaled slightly in excess of 6,300 students from throughout Missouri and the surrounding three-state region, across the United States, and around the world.

Of that, Northwest claims approximately 491 international students from 31 countries.

Most coming from India, Nepal, China and South Korea.

Northwest boasts an enrollment of approximately 65 percent Missouri residents.

Northwest students historically perform quite well in the classroom. Freshmen have a fall-to-fall retention rate of 73 percent – a percentage that continues to place Northwest in the top tier of its national peer group. The University achieves a 59 percent graduation rate, which ranks in the 89th percentile.

The university’s placement rate — the percentage of graduates who are employed or continuing their education within six months of graduation — is 96 percent for undergraduates and 97 percent for graduate students.

Maryville and Northwest continue to enhance a strong “town and gown” relationship that benefits both in many ways. With 253 full-time faculty whose curriculum expertise spans the full spectrum of areas important to improving the community as well as the campus environment, city and county projects and programs are able to readily draw on local “consultants.”

Founded in 1905, Northwest has evolved into a co-educational, residential four-year university that offers a broad range of undergraduate and graduate programs centered on a model of profession-based learning.

As the nation’s first “Electronic Campus,” Northwest’s pioneering computing program continues to provide a fully-loaded laptop to every student that, when combined with Northwest’s textbook rental program, helps save students an estimated $7,300 during four years of college.

Report as the top moderately selective regional university in Missouri, and it has met all measures of the state’s performance-based funding initiative during four of the model’s first five years. BestCollegesOnline.org has named the Northwest campus one of the “50 Most Amazing University Botanical Gardens and Arboretums in the U.S,” and AffordableColleges.com ranks Northwest among the top 40 most affordable public universities in the nation.

The Hughes Fieldhouse

Northwest Missouri State University broke ground in 2017 for the Carl and Cheryl Hughes Fieldhouse, a 137,250 square-foot, $20 million facility designed to serve a multitude of social, recreational and economic needs for the University and region.

Leading support for the project is provided by the Founding 50, which represents lead donors who committed gifts of $50,000 or more to, with the Hughes Family, the Mel and Valorie Booth Family, the city of Maryville and Nodaway Valley Bank working as “team captains” of the group.

Northwest has outlined four goals for the facility: promoting health, wellness and engaged programming for students, faculty and staff as well as the broader community; providing a competitive advantage relative to Northwest’s intercollegiate athletics teams and overall programming; enhancing North-

west’s ability to recruit, retain and engage students; and providing enhanced community partnership opportunities and economic development outcomes.

The Hughes Fieldhouse is expected to enhance student engagement and create more opportunities for intramurals and recreation on campus as well as large university events such as commencement ceremonies, concerts or career days. Student organizations and performance groups, such as the Bearcat Marching Band, will use the facility for activities when inclement weather sets in. Bearcat athletics teams are expected to benefit from the facility’s indoor flooring system, 90-yard practice turf and 300-meter indoor competition track.

In addition to its recreational features, the Hughes Fieldhouse will be Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) certified, designed and constructed according to modern sustainability standards. It is expected to include recreation and exhibition space, spectator seating and tiered meeting rooms.

While funding for the project is coming from multiple sources, including a significant percentage from donors, Maryville voters approved a transient guest tax that will support the operation of the facility. The city has formed a tourism committee charged with developing ways to use revenues from the tax and to maximize the center for community events such as trade shows, conferences,

school functions and recreational activities.

When complete, the Hughes Fieldhouse is expected to provide an additional economic impact of $23.8 million, the equivalent of creating 946 new jobs, for the region. That comes as an addition to the $617.5 million Northwest generates in added regional income.

Conception Seminary College

Established in 1886, Conception Seminary College is one of the largest of the 40 Roman Catholic college seminaries in the nation and one of only 15 with a complete four-year academic curriculum.

Maryville can proclaim itself as the recreational center of Northwest Missouri — easily.

Headlining that is the state-park-quality 3,000-acre Mozingo Lake Recreation Park located east of the city, just north of U.S. Highway 136 and west of Liberty Road.

The centerpieces of the multi-use recreational area are the 1,000-acre lake that is its namesake and its golf courses — the Sechrest 18 and the Watson 9. While both golf courses have won “best of” awards, the Watson 9 golf course, opened in 2015, was named a top 10 hybrid golf course in North

America by Golf Digest magazine.

The golf courses are only the beginning, however. Opened in January, 2018 is the 30,000 square-foot Conference Center at Mozingo Lake. This new facility, located adjacent to the golf courses, is the premier event destination in northwest Missouri. The conference center can accommodate events up to 500 people and provides unobstructed, 180-degree views of the golf courses and Mozingo Lake. There’s no better view than from the wrap-around deck. Also located within the conference center is the new golf pro shop, a full-service restaurant that is

available for catering, and an indoor swing bay with two top-of-the-line golf simulators.

The conference center is an excellent venue to host weddings, special events, and corporate events all year round.

Other available amenities located at Mozingo include fully furnished cabins, recreational vehicle and tent-camping sites, hiking trails, a group camp facility, and an equestrian RV park. A privately owned, hotel, Boulders Inn & Suites is directly adjacent to the conference center.

Mozingo Lake takes a backseat to no other man-made lake in Missouri. It was

constructed to ensure a drought-proof water source for Maryville and to assist with flood control, but it has developed into what many enthusiasts consider to be the best fishing spot in the state, and one of the best in the country. Three boat-launch ramps provide access for fishing, pleasure boating, jet skiing and water skiing. A sand beach for lake swimming is also available.

Fishing access to the lake is available from the three paved fishing ramps as well as along many stretches of its 26-mile shoreline.

The lake is a crappie fisherman’s paradise in the spring and fall and a prime destination for bass fishermen throughout the year.

Tournaments are weekly occurrences from early spring through mid-November, attracting competitors from several nearby states. In recent years, the stringer weights from Mozingo Lake tournaments have been the heaviest in Missouri and numerous fishing reports and publications cite the lake as being one of the 100 best fisheries in the United States.

Mozingo Lake Golf Courses

Nestled among rolling hills, native grasslands and wooded areas at the south end of the lake, the golfing opportunities are unequaled in the Midwest.

The Sechrest 18 has done nothing but improve since being nominated as “The Best New Public Golf Course in America” by Golf Digest magazine in 1996.

It is augmented by the Watson 9 junior course, designed by Tom Watson, the iconic touring professional from nearby Kansas City with eight major tournament victories, including five British Open championships.

The Watson 9 is designed for teaching the game as a lifetime sport to youngsters, but it doubles as an executive course. Promoted by a group of local golf enthusiasts and spearheaded by Dr. Bruce Twaddle, the 1,600-yard hybrid course was primarily funded locally and provides a venue for an area-wide teaching program serving a multi-county area. In 2015, the Watson 9 was named one of the top 10 hybrid golf courses in North America by Golf Digest.

The 18-hole course was designed by Donald Sechrest, the author of more than 90

courses throughout the Midwest. It offers a challenge for all skill levels, stretching from 5,242 yards to its par-72 maximum of 7,135 yards. The layout has a course rating of 73.5 and a slope rating of 134 on rye grass.

The Sechrest 18 layout has been designated as “the best moderately priced golf course in Missouri” by USA TODAY, which, along with Golf Digest, calls it the “best course to play in the state of Missouri for under $50.”

The clubhouse and pro shop are now located in the recently opened Conference Center at Mozingo Lake. The new spacious design of the pro shop offers golfers and park guests a wide variety of merchandise, from logo t-shirts and sweatshirts to the latest golfing equipment. A recently renovated driving range, putting green, golf cart rental and individual or group lessons are part of the golfing amenities available at Mozingo. The course’s overall playability has been enhanced most recently by the addition of an all-weather, concrete path system.

Among new amenities available are the two golf simulators from TruGolf. With over 63 golf courses and games, the golf simu-

lators are perfect for the dedicated golfer looking to shave off a couple of strokes to families looking to have a unique bonding experience. Golf is truly a year-round activity at Mozingo Lake.

Numerous tournaments are held each year at Mozingo, including charitable events as well as collegiate and high school matches.

The course is the home links for the women’s golf team at Northwest Missouri State and for Maryville and other area high schools.

Seasonal playing passes are offered, in addition to daily greens fees.

RVs, cabins, camping, and hotel

Mozingo’s public accommodations include overnight/extended-stay cabins; a fullservice RV park and tent camping for visitors wanting to take advantage of the lake or the various hiking trails; covered picnic shelters, and outdoor physical fitness and leadership training facilities.

Limited game bird hunting is permitted in season.

The city operates its 108-space recreational vehicle parks on a year-round basis, although the major activities are in the summer, ending, for all practical purposes, with the annual “Haunted Campground” Halloween festivities at the park in late October.

The majority of the sites (75) are available on a space-available basis, but there are

33 spaces that may be reserved in advance.

The RV Park provides water and electricity, showers and restroom facilities, a dump station and a playground for younger campers.

It is supervised during the peak summer season by a full-time park host.

The RV park is connected to the Lookout Point area of the lake by a concrete hiking and biking trail completed in conjunction with the city’s expanding hiking/biking trail system. Mozingo also offers an Equestrian RV campground on the west side of the lake.

The EQ campground provides all the necessary accommodations for equestrian groups and is connected to an equestrian trail that is approximately nine miles long.

Eight cabins are available for booking year round at Mozingo. Five cabins that can accommodate from six to 12 persons are located near the RV Park. The fully equipped, modern units are extremely popular and advance reservations are recommended.

All are fully furnished, have fireplaces and beautiful lake views. Three additional cabins built by the Northwest Technical School building trades classes during the 2013-15 school years are located nearby. They also have wonderful views of the lake and golf course, and are readily accessible to picnic shelters.

There are 37 tent camping sites available

in a wooded area between the RV Park and the swimming beach. Picnic shelters and tables are located on and around Lookout Point.

Boulders Inn and Suites

A 40-room, privately owned and operated hotel is adjacent to the conference center and golf courses. Boulders is a modern, upscale hotel catering to the business or leisure traveler and group travel for weddings, family reunions, teams and organizations.

Group Camp and MOERA

The Mozingo Group Camp is popular for its combination of five rustic cabins and modern kitchen and dining facility. An adjacent tent-camping area is also available.

The Mozingo Outdoor Education Recreation Area is situated on 320 acres operated by Northwest Missouri State University along the shores of Mozingo Lake.

MOERA patrons can take part in recreational activities, including a challenge course for developing leadership and teamwork skills. The course features a 50-foot Alpine climbing tower and climbing wall, a low elements obstacle course, kayaking facilities, trap shooting and an archery range.

It is popular with local residents and university students as well as area corporations which use it for team-building and retreat experiences.

The Maryville Recreation Center, Beal Park and its Maryville Aquatic Center, and Donaldson Westside Park and Sports Complex are the primary destinations within Maryville’s elaborate network of city parks and playgrounds.

The Maryville Parks and Recreation Department has primary operational responsibilities for the city’s facilities, including its dozen city parks. Located in various geographical sections of the city, the parks include athletic fields, shelters, playground equipment, walking trails and historically significant sites.

The Parks and Recreation Department, a separate entity from the City of Maryville, is governed by a citizen’s board. Its annual budget, however, requires city council approval.

The Maryville Community Center, the city’s versatile “Rec Center,” is undoubtedly the focal point for year-round physical activity, so much so that Maryville voters overwhelmingly passed a proposition to fund additional meeting rooms and exercise space and equipment when demand outgrew available space in the original complex. The center’s expansion was completed in 2008, just six years after the complex was originally opened in conjunction with the Missouri National Guard Armory.

The gymnasium area provides space for basketball, volleyball and an indoor tennis court. An elevated, 12-laps-per-mile walking track supplements a full complement of cardio-vascular and weight-training equipment. All are open to the public during extended hours of operation that vary seasonally. Rooms for regularly scheduled aerobic training and other classes, as well as for group meetings, are available.

The Community Center also provides office space for the MPR director and staff.

The latest addition to the recreational landscape in Maryville is the Robert and Vir-

ginia Foster Fitness Center in the Rylan Milner Sports Complex on the Northwest Missouri State University campus. Constructed in 2015 in the location previously occupied by the university’s indoor swimming pool, the new facility, is named to honor the university’s seventh president and his wife.

The privately operated Title Town Fitness and Curves for Women add choice to the full range of health club activities available to city residents and students.

Maryville Aquatic Center

Maryville’s beautiful municipal swimming pool provides water-based recreation ranging from zero-depth entry to fountains and water slides that complement its eight 25-meter lanes for competitive swimming.

The $2 million facility was built with public funds and has been recognized for the design of its bathhouse and concession areas.

Swimming lessons are available through MPR and Red Cross programs each summer. The aquatic center is home to the Maryville Sharks, a youth swim team that is competitive with other area communities.

Aquatic exercise is also available at the municipal pool.

City Trail System

Maryville is developing an extensive system of walking/biking trails throughout the community and the Northwest campus, eventually connecting to an auxiliary system at the Mozingo Lake Recreational Park area.

More than five miles of paved walkways have been added to the community’s trail system since the program’s inception and continuation of the all-weather trail system, coupled with an extensive Safe Routes to School, will eventually encircle the perimeter of the community.

More recent additions provide a route linking the SSM Health St. Francis Hospital campus with both Maryville Middle School and Maryville High and a segment along

South Munn Street built in connection with the reconstruction of that main thoroughfare that serves as a primary entrance to the city, Maryville High School and Northwest.

The continuing trail program is possible because of significant funding through the Missouri Department of Transportation.

Donaldson Westside Park

The 40-acre Donaldson Park is the newest of Maryville’s 11 public parks, and offers the most extensive array of recreational opportunities. It contains four lighted softball fields, five soccer fields, a football field, a skateboard park, playground equipment, shelters and an amphitheater.

Maryville Country Club

Maryville Country Club is located at the city’s western edge and offers a challenging nine-hole golf course. The layout provides a challenge to golfers of all skill levels. The club also offers a newly remodeled clubhouse with dining room and bar and a swimming pool for members and guests.

Running

Runners and walkers are not left out of Maryville’s recreational mix. The area season usually begins with Conception Abbey Trails Day in April, followed by the Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce-sponsored Country Classic Marathon, an official qualifying event for the Boston Marathon, and still later in the season, the MAC’s annual mini-triathlon.

Bowling/Movies

Bearcat Lanes is a modern bowling facility offering 16 top condition alleys and modern equipment for the individual bowler as well as numerous league competitors.

The Hangar is Maryville’s unique movie theater located on South Main Street. The multi-screen theater, designed and decorated to resemble an airplane hangar, offers firstrun movies.

Wildlife abounds in Northwest Missouri.

Hunting for deer, turkey, waterfowl, quail, pheasant, and other small game such as rabbits and squirrels, is popular throughout the area In addition to the fine angling at Mozingo Lake, nearby Nodaway Lake and the Bilby Lake and Conservation Area, a vast assortment of private farm ponds can make for some great

fishing in the immediate area.

Permission is required from landowners to fish the farm ponds, but most are more than willing to provide access to responsible sportsmen.

Favorite pond-fish species are bass, crappie, sunfish — bream and bluegill — and catfish.

The ever-expanding Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp., USA plant located at the south edge of the city is the area’s largest manufacturing employer. The Kawasaki plant employs more than 775 people, including managers and assembly line personnel, to man its three shifts producing gasoline engines for lawn and garden and outdoor recreational vehicle products. That total does not include workers employed by Focus Workforce Development, which provides more than 300 full-time temporary workers.

Northwest Missouri State University maintains a full-time employment base of some 700 people while SSM Health St. Francis Hospital has approximately 500 employees. At least a half dozen other employers, including Walmart and Hy-Vee Food Store, maintain payrolls of between 200 and 300 employees.

Demographics total, Maryville has an estimated 2015 population of 12,318, which, coupled with the population of the adjoining areas outside the city limits that are included in Polk Township, increases the immediate area’s count to more than 15,800.

The median age of Maryville residents is 23.9 years old, with 45.1 percent falling into the 15-to-24-year-old category. Another 24.7 percent of the city population is between 25 and 54 years old. The median age of all Nodaway County residents is 29.5 years old, and they boast a median household income of $40,166.

The diverse cultural population of Maryville and Nodaway County reflects a higher level of education than other communities of its size in Missouri, and nationally. More than 92.2 percent of our residents 25 years old and older are high school graduates, or

the equivalent, compared to 87.6 percent in Missouri and 86 percent across the nation. In Nodaway County, the percentage of residents with an earned degree from a four-year institution is approximately the same as both the state and the United States. However, the 17.8 percent of residents holding a graduate degree is more than twice the national average.

The county population includes 17.2 percent of the 23,880 total who are under 18 years old. Those aged 65 and older account for 15.2 percent of the county’s population.

Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp, USA, is the area’s largest employer with a payroll of more than 775 persons. Northwest Missouri State University employees approximately 700 people. SSM St. Francis Hospital has about 500 employees. Hy-Vee leads retail employers with 300 workers.

Maryville and Nodaway County boast a strong — and stable — history as a favorable location in which to live and work.

Year in, year out, the historic rural agricultural base, augmented by solid academic, industrial and professional employers, enables the county to boast one of the most favorable employment rates in Missouri — ranking at or above the state and area average for almost every quarter since before 1990.

The percentage of Nodaway County persons over 25 with advanced degrees is twice the national average.

As is the case with most non-metropolitan areas in the United States today, Nodaway County’s population is below its historical high, but continues to hold steady at approximatly 24,000.

Maryville is located near the geographic center of Northwest Missouri, the Quad-State area — and the entire United States.

The city is situated at the junction of U.S. Highway 71, one of the country’s major north-south thoroughfares, and U.S. 136, an east-west route linking Indianapolis with western Nebraska. Maryville is also approximately midway between Interstates 29 and 35, placing it near the hub of one of the major Midwest highway networks.

As a primary four-lane route traversing from the nation’s northern boundary at International Falls, Minnesota, to near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, U.S. 71 through Maryville connects with I-29 just north of St. Joseph, 35 miles south.

U.S. 136, meanwhile, provides Maryville’s east-west connection to the interstate system.

It is approximately 40 miles west to its intersection with I-29 at Rock Port, Missouri.

Highway 136 also connects with I-35, another major north-south highway in the central United States, 57 miles east at Bethany, Missouri. I-35 links Duluth, Minnesota, and Laredo, Texas, serving both the MinneapolisSt. Paul and Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan areas along its route.

Using major interstate routes or the lesstraveled federal and state highway systems, Maryville is conveniently located near Kansas City (95 miles to the south; an hour and a half travel time), Omaha, Nebraska, (1102miles north, less than two hours), and Des Moines, Iowa (159 miles northeast; two and a half hours).

Local air service is available through two Maryville airports, the municipal Northwest Missouri Regional Airport, and privately operated Rankin Field.

The city-operated facility has a 4,600-by75-foot hard-surface runway, an adjacent

taxiway and complete fuel service, making it fully compatible with corporate jet aircraft.

Rankin Field has a 3,050-by-25-foot hardsurface runway and taxiway. Both are lighted and offer maintenance and hangar facilities.

Combined average weekly air traffic exceeds 150 flights.

Commercial airline service with connections to any destination in the country is most conveniently available at the Mid-Continent International Airport in Kansas City (80 miles south) and through Omaha’s Eppley Field (115 miles north).

Amtrak rail connections to major east-west routes are available from Creston, Iowa, (70 miles north), three Kansas City-area stations, and Omaha.

Maryville also has scheduled ground transportation service via Jefferson Bus Lines to nearby connecting stops in Kansas City, Springfield and Omaha.

City of Maryville

Maryville, the county seat of Nodaway County, is governed by a council/manager form of government. It has historically functioned well, not only in managing the city’s overall business and services, but also in working hand-in-glove with Nodaway County commissioners.

Five city council members are elected to serve staggered threeyear terms. They, in turn, elect a fellow councilperson as mayor on an annual basis.

The actual day-to-day responsibilities of the city’s operation are handled by a professional city manager and an assistant city manager.

The Maryville Public Works Department has full responsibilitiy for the operation and maintenance of the city’s infrastructure.

The city’s consistently updated water treatment plant, located east of the U.S. Highway 71 Bypass, and the city’s ultra-modern wastewater treatment plant are operated by an independent contractor.

The Maryville Public Works Department also encompasses the building, zoning, and code enforcement functions of city government.

The Nodaway County Commission is composed of three members — a presiding commissioner and associate commissioners representing North and South districts in the county.

They work closely with locally elected officers from 15 townships to coordinate services related to roads, bridges and drainage. Each township elects a trustee, two board members, and a clerk.

The Nodaway County Sheriff’s Office provides law enforcement services to the county, including the operation of an enhanced 911 system.

Most Nodaway County officials’ offices are located in a modern Administration Center at the northeast corner of East Fourth and Market streets, adjacent to the Maryville City Hall and northeast of the Nodaway County Courthouse. Public meeting spaces are available in the administrative building.

The office of the prosecuting attorney, the circuit courtrooms and offices for the judges and clerk of the court remain in the courthouse. That building, constructed in 1881 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is situated in the center of the square in Maryville’s downtown.

The Courthouse is the focal point of a multi-million-dollar revitalization project that includes a complete revamping of the Downtown Maryville square’s landscaping, streets and intersections.

Maryville’s Public Safety Department provides the community’s police and fire protection, including 911 emergency response services. All public safety officers are trained not only as law enforcement officers, but also as firefighters to assist the community’s volunteer fire department.

Maryville Public Safety personnel maintain a close working relationship with the Nodaway County Sheriff’s Office, the Missouri Highway Patrol and the Northwest Missouri State University Police Department.

of Central European decent, primarily from the German, Scottish and Irish who settled the area. The county’s current population has retained that rural heritage and strong work ethic.

President Herbert Hoover once owned a farm near Graham and the Bilby Ranch, founded near Quitman, had holdings throughout the West. At one time, it claimed to be second in size only to the King Ranch in Texas. Rancho del Rayo, established near Hopkins by William Robbins, who amassed his wealth producing lightning rods, proclaimed itself as the largest ranch in Missouri after the dissolution of the Bilby Ranch.

Two Nodaway County farms were famous for their horses and horse-racing connections.

Isaac N. Prather settled on a farm just west of Maryville in 1839. He imported a famous English thoroughbred, Faustus, and named his farm Faustiana after the horse. The stables were home to Elwood, the 1904 Kentucky Derby winner. The Townsend family later used the name for its horse farm and it continues today as the name of a Maryville residential area.

Thoroughbred trainers Ben A. Jones and Horace A. “Jimmy” Jones farmed, and retired, near Parnell. During their time at Kentucky’s Calumet Farms, the Jones father-and-son team trained six Kentucky Derby champions and two Triple Crown winners.

Famous natives of Nodaway County include Sarah Caldwell of the Boston Opera; Dale Carnegie, author of “How to Win Friends and Influence People” and developer of self- improvement courses; Homer Croy, whose books depict life in Maryville; Albert P. Morehouse, Missouri governor (1888-90), Forrest C. Donnell, Missouri governor (1941-45) and U.S. Senator (1945-51); U.S. Sen. Edward H. Moore of Oklahoma, and World War II Medal of Honor-winner Albert David.

History

From the time in 1845 when Nodaway County was designated to be the largest of six political subdivisions in the relatively new state of Missouri, the county and Maryville, its county seat, have served as the governmental, cultural and academic centers of Northwest Missouri.

Nodaway County, the fourth largest of 114 counties in Missouri, encompasses 878 square miles of fertile agricultural land that were a part of the Platte Purchase of 1836, when the Sac, Fox and Iowa Indians relinquished, through treaty, their rights to the huge tract they had only recently been assigned. The entire area was once covered with tall, waving prairie grasses on the uplifts or “narrows” and uncluttered by trees except along the three north-to-south rivers and the smaller creeks.

The origin of the name, Nodaway, is believed to be from the Chiwere Siouian language spoken by the Iowan, Otoe and Missouria tribes.

The word is believed to be derived from the word “Nat’awe,” — sounded out “NyiAt’awe,” — which means “jump over water.”

Other possible interpretations include “crossed without canoe.”

A map from Lewis and Clark shows the river as “Nodawa,” indicating the name had been established prior to the early 1800s.

Humans have lived in this region for more than 12,000 years dating back to the end of the Pleistocene ice age when Mammoths roamed what is now Nodaway County.

Maryville was named in honor of Mary Graham, the wife of Amos Graham, the town’s first postmaster and the Nodaway County clerk. Mary was the first Caucasian woman to live within the boundaries of the settlement, incorporated in 1856.
