PASTMASTERS
2016 ENTERTAINMENT
Fair main stage features old-time rock, homegrown country style By TONY BROWN Staff writer
Nodaway countians might want to dig their dancing shoes out of the closet for this year’s Nodaway County Fair, which — to paraphrase the Beverly Hillbillies theme song — will include a heapin’ helpin’ of old time rock ’n’ roll and country music. Appearing on the square in the fair’s showcase slots at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.on Saturday, July 16, will be the PastMasters, a 1960s and ’70s cover band from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, that
plays “100 percent dance music 100 percent of the time.” The combo performed at last year’s fair and is returning in 2016 by popular demand. With a solid keyboard and guitar front line, the PastMasters are literally masters of a set list that harks back to baby boomer dance fads ranging from the Twist to the Watusi to the Limbo set to pop hits by a diverse group of artists, including Shaun Cassidy, Elvis Presley, Sam & Dave, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Archies, and the 1910 Fruitgum Company. Members include Chad Johnson, lead
vocals; Bart Carfizzi, keyboards/vocals; Layne Goldsberry, bass; Tommy Bruner, guitar/vocals; and Tom Miller, drums/vocals. On Friday, July 15, local talent takes the spotlight on the courthouse square stage when Broken Spoke, featuring Burlington Junction singer Michael Goff, will offer their eclectic brand of country beginning at 6:15 p.m. Consisting of Goff, guitarist Travis Conn, banjoist and rhythm guitar player Markham Harris, bassist William Skretta, harmonica player Roger Goff, Rochelle Shimak, and drummer Kiley Schluter, Broken Spoke specializes in
traditional country with occasional forays into ’80s and ’90s pop. Goff was the 2013 Country Showdown winner representing Nodaway Broadcasting and advanced that year to regional competition in Boonville. Broken Spoke’s performance on Friday will be followed by this year’s local Country Showdown talent contest. Thursday attractions on the square include the Little Mr. and Miss Nodaway County Pageant at 6 p.m., Maryville Dance Academy at 6:45 p.m., the Step Ahead dancers at 7:15 p.m., and the Nodaway County Band at 8 p.m.

at the show. Anyone interested in having a display should have their display ready by 4 p.m. Saturday, July 16, on the north side of the square by the Nodaway County Administration Building. Along with the displays, Cain said there would be activities during the show including a two-man crosscut saw contest with a $100 cash prize. The contest will be timed. For more information about the antique show, call Cain at 660.562.8903.

Historical Society honored as grand marshal DAILY FORUM STAFF
The Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce has chosen the Nodaway County Historical Society as grand marshal for the 2016 Nodaway County Fair Parade. Set to begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 16, the parade carries the theme “A Blast from the Past. “This year’s grand marshals will be a special group of individuals rather than a couple,” said Chamber Director Jordyn Swalley. “This group constantly volunteers their time to ensure the rich history of our community is not forgotten. The Nodaway County Historical Society has been instrumental in finding unique information and keeping alive the history that our community was built on.” Founded in 1944 and reorganized in 1964, some of the society’s accomplishments include the creation of a three-story museum/archive complex, relocation of the 1883 Hickory Grove one-room schoolhouse to the museum campus, and acquisition of the 1849 Caleb Burns House, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. “The Nodaway County Historical Society is very honored to be the Maryville Chamber Ambassadors Nodaway County Fair grand marshal,” said longtime society volunteer Melissa Middleswart. Though the society is made up of many committed volunteers, including board members Jo Ann Outs, Alice Hersh, Carolyn Fisher, Harmon Mothershead, Linda Girard, Melissa Middleswart, Margaret Kelley, Bob Bohlken, and W.F. Scott, the organization as it exists today is largely the legacy of one man, Northwest Missouri State University Emeritus Professor of History Tom Carneal. Carneal, who also serves on the board, essentially transformed the society following his arrival on the Northwest campus in 1968 into a landmark community institution that today embraces both an impressive physical footprint and a collection consisting of thousands of documents, genealogical records, special holdings, and artifacts. “I was just so pleased that they picked the Historical Society to be grand marshals, because to me it is like recognition
that we are part of the community and doing an important job,” Carneal said. “It frees me to say that all of a sudden we’re just as good an anybody else. I say that because I think sometimes nobody knows we’re here.” He added that he hopes the recognition will spur more people to visit the museum and “look at what we’ve put together — see where we have been, where we’ve come from, and all that we have done in this county.” Carneal joined the society, then little more than a social club, shortly after moving to Maryville and fresh from graduate studies at the University of MissouriKansas City, where he enrolled after a hitch in the Army. At the time there was no local museum, and no one was even dreaming of acquiring such structures as the Burns House or the school. “Basically people got together once a month and talked about what they would like to do,” Carneal told the Daily forum in a 2014 interview. “When someone went on a trip, they brought back pictures. But deep down inside … well, I think what they wanted was a museum.” Lots of people talk. Carneal acted. The society didn’t have any money, so he signed the mortgage for the Burns House property himself. Then he helped orchestrate the publishing of “Tales of Nodaway County,” a popular history that sold out three printings’ worth of copies and made it possible for the nascent organization to pay off the note on the two-story pioneer residence. The first artifact donated to the new museum, Carneal said, was an old egg crate. But from that initial gift, a trickle of donations quickly turned into a flood, and soon the society was in desperate need of more space, along with a facility that would provide the necessary security and environmental equipment needed to properly preserve and maintain a large collection. Good fortune, with an assist from Carneal’s solid contacts in the Maryville community, came to the rescue when John Price, of the Price Funeral Home family, left the society $750,000 in old coins, stocks, and bonds that was used to build the current museum, which was

He knows more about Nodaway County than anyone. He just has a wealth of knowledge about Nodaway County History. The society, I think, had been foundering for a long time, and he was one of the ones who helped put it back together again.” Over the past 20 years, artifacts have continued to pour into the museum, and Carneal said during the interview that
one of his few regrets is that the society’s board of directors declined to purchase land adjoining the current facility that could have been used for expansion. Utility and maintenance costs, the directors feared, would have been too great. Still, the modern facility that exists today is a far cry from the glorified community attics that serve as dusty repositories of the past in many rural towns. More than just a collection of military uniforms, furniture, framed photographs and aging mementoes of all shapes and sizes, the museum today functions as a working research institution encompassing both the genealogical library and the See WHAT, Page 5

Heritage Collection. The brainchild of the late journalism teacher Opal Eckart, the Heritage Collection consists of a massive compilation of newspaper articles, documents, letters, reports, records, and diaries that, taken together, form a detailed picture of life in Nodaway County stretching back well over a century. As in past years, the 2016 parade route will follow Fourth Street east from the Northwest Missouri State University campus then turn south on Buchanan and end at Second Street. The chamber welcomes floats, antique cars, trucks, and implements, horse entries, clowns, politicians, children, and families to join in on the fun and participate in the parade. Pre-registration is highly encouraged. Registration is free and forms are available at the Chamber office or on the Chamber website at
maryvillechamber.com. First- and second-place trophies will be awarded for best float by an organization, best float from a commercial entry, and best entry in our open category. There will be a trophy for best antique car, truck, and farm implement. Trophies will be awarded to participants with horses for best costume and largest group. The top award, the President’s Choice Trophy, will be presented by Chamber President Brandon Stanley. All parade participants must check in at the registration table in the parking lot west of the Ron Houston Performing Arts Center. Participants in judged categories must be in place by 8 a.m. For liability and safety reasons, roller blades, skates, and skateboards are not allowed. All candy and giveaway items must be handed out, not thrown from moving vehicles. ATVs and motorcycles must remain on all wheels at all times.

Fair board always looking for new members By DUSTIN HENGGELER Managing Editor
The Nodaway County Fair board has a number of members who have served for 10 years or more, including Brian and Cathy McPherson, who combine for nearly 70 years of service. While it makes for an oiled machine in getting every facet of something like the Nodaway County Fair in order, it also creates a feeling of redundancy for the group when they try to come up with new and exciting ideas. That being said, McPherson wants the community to know that people are always welcome to join the fair board. No it doesn’t pay, and no one gets any free tickets for their service. But those that serve
do get a change to provide that spark of new ideas to the board that could turn into the newest and best event the fair has ever seen. “It does take a lot of community effort to put something like the Nodaway County Fair on,” McPherson said. “Yes we are the group that ramrods the whole thing, but so many people take part in it. And something like this will always take more.” There are no dues required to be on the fair board, for those dues are paid in time and service once the fair comes to town. There is also no experience necessary to be a successful member of the board, just a willingness to pull up your sleeves when it comes time to set up, or take down.
“No one person can do everything, but everyone can do something,” McPherson said. “The more everyones we have, the more somethings we can do.” Another benefit of being a member of the fair board is the annual trip the group takes to Columbia to the Missouri Association of Fairs & Festivities Convention. Members are able to attend a number of booths of vendors and acts interested in being a part of Missouri fairs or festivals. Live music performances are also a part of the convention where up and coming acts are able to entertain in hopes of landing a gig. “We’ve landed people like Jard Neeman, Jamie Johnson, Gwen Sebastian and Low Cash, who are all making names
for themselves now,” McPherson said. “We found them from the convention, so it is valuable for us.” The fair board meets once a month throughout the year until May and June. Then the group meets weekly to finalize all the details involved with the fair. “One of my greatest memories as an old man is being able to ride the same ride with my grandkids that I loved myself as a child,” McPherson said. “That’s why I help continue the Nodaway County Fair, because I want my grandkids to be able to enjoy the fair the way I did.” For more information on joining the fair board, talk to any of the current fair board members who will be sporting their red shirts all throughout the July 14-16 Nodaway County Fair.

Nodaway County Fair Checker Tournament By DUSTIN HENGGELER Managing Editor
Checker players have a reason to rejoice again this year at the Nodaway County Fair. For the second year, the Fair will have a checker tournament Saturday afternoon. In a day full of activities, people of all ages can sit down and enjoy a competitive game of checkers.
‘In the past, we had checker tournaments and horse shoes.’ — Steve Mozier
Fair Board Member
“In the past, we had checker tournaments and horse shoes,” Fair Board Member Steve Mozier said. “We wanted
to bring them back, but we didn’t have anywhere to do the horse shoes, so we decided to bring the checker tournament back.” The checker tournament will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 16 in the Nodaway County Administration Center. The tournament is open to players ages 15 and older, and the winner will receive a cash prize. Players will seek to win two out of three games against successive opponents in a single-elimination format. Anyone interested in participating can sign up any day after the Fair office, located in the Nodaway County Administration Building, opens July 11 or they can show up Saturday. The overall winner of the tournament will receive $100. For more information about the tournament or to register, contact Mozier at 660.254.3140. The Fair office’s number is 660.254.3247.

FFA, 4-H youth prepare for the arena By TONY BROWN News editor
Most town-dwellers think the Nodaway County Fair begins on Thursday, July 14, when the midway lights go on, the Tilt-A-Whirl starts to spin, and classic rock ’n’ roll blares from the main stage on the courthouse square. But that’s not true. The fair — and for many farm folks across northwest Missouri, the true highlight of the summer celebration — actually begins two days earlier on Tuesday, July 12. That’s when dozens of 4-H and FFA youngsters from Nodaway and other counties across the region begin arriving to display their prized livestock. As usual, this year’s round of livestock exhibits and judging will take place at the Nodaway County Community Building arena west of town adjoining Northwest Missouri Regional Airport.
The opening event is the poultry show with check-in scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 12. The show itself begins at 6 p.m. with rabbits to follow at around 6:30. The evening will also include a 4-H small animal exhibition from 5:30-6 p.m. Livestock exhibits continue Wednesday, July 13, with swine, goats and sheep. Swine check-in runs from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. followed by the 9 a.m. swine show. Goat check-in lasts from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. with the goat show set to follow at 3 p.m. To round out the day, sheep check-in is available from 4 pm. to 5 p.m. with the sheep show starting at 6 p.m. The final day of the livestock exhibition is Thursday, July 14. Beef and dairy check-in is set for 8 a.m.-9 a.m., and the beef and dairy show begins at 10 a.m. with heifers followed by dairy cows, and steers. See LIVESTOCK, Page 21

First Christian Church welcomes Toby’s Carnival with breakfast By JENNIFER DITLEVSON HAGLUND Staff writer
Setting up and running the annual Nodaway County Fair takes hard work in the heat, which is why carnival workers will undertake the task as temperatures begin to cool in the evening. They will work through the night, rest during the day, and return at night to operate rides and prize booths. To help them cool off and provide a bite to eat, the outreach committee at First Christian Church will host a free latenight breakfast for the crew. According to Sue Schenkel, chairperson of the committee, the idea for the event came from Steve Breon, the seSee CHURCH, Page 23
