Country music will be the favored genre at this year’s Nodaway County Fair, with Maryville native Mitch Gallagher returning to perform for a hometown crowd along with fellow Show-Me Staters and budding Nashville stars Rickie Lee Tanner and Josey Milner later in the week. The 2014 fair carries the theme “Fairadise by the Carnival Lights” and begins with the traditional round of youth livestock shows July 15-17 at the Community Building arena just north of Northwest Missouri Regional Airport. The midway, along with other attractions and events on the courthouse square, will open Thursday, July 17, and continue through Saturday, July 19. Gallagher will perform on the main stage downtown at 8 p.m. July 17. The country crooner’s tunes, which include his second EP, “Where the Heart Is,” have climbed as high as No. 41 on the iTunes Top 200 Country Albums chart. Other events planned for the fair this year include the Little Mr. and Miss Nodaway County competition at 6 p.m. July 17, which will be followed by the Nodaway County Queen Contest at 7 p.m.
Also returning to the courthouse square stage this year at 8 p.m. Friday, July 18, is the Texaco Country Showdown, billed as the “largest and longestrunning country music talent search” in the United States. The fair edition of the event is one of five Showdown contests taking place in northern Missouri this year. Opening act Milner and headliner Tanner take the stage Saturday night. Missouri-born Milner, whose show is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m., is known for her single “Not Pretty Enough” and earned a 2013 Independent Country Music Award nomination for Promising Young Artist. Tanner, from Belton, has two studio albums to his credit, including 2013’s “This Here.” He is scheduled to perform two Saturday shows beginning at 8 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. A new addition to this year’s fair is “Freddy the Fair Dog,” a Bobby Bearcatstyle mascot. Nodaway County Fair Board members said they’re introducing Freddy in order to give the event a more kid-friendly feel. Freddy will welcome families to the fair, march in the parade and be available for photo opportunities.

New marshals in town
Fred and Sandi Von Behren have been named grand marshals for the 2014 Nodaway County Fair Parade, which is organized each year by the Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors. The Von Behrens were selected in recognition of their years of service to the Maryville community, including involvement with the Chamber, Rotary Club and their church.

In 1989, Fred and Sandi Von Behren moved to Maryville from Albany after Fred, who ran the Albany Hy-Vee grocery store for six years, was named to manage the retail food chain’s Maryville supermarket. Twenty-five years later, the Von Behrens have become respected and beloved pillars of the Maryville community. And it is because of their tireless involvement in various community organizations and programs that they have been selected by the Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors to serve as grand marshals during the 2014 Nodaway County Fair Parade. “The (Chamber) ambassadors nominate candidates each year, then select the grand marshal from those nominated,” Chamber Executive Director Melanie Smith said.
“We are pleased and excited to have Fred and Sandi lead our 2014 Nodaway County Fair Parade. The Von Behrens do so much for the community and are very deserving of grand marshal status.” Fred said his experience as an assistant manager at the Hy-Vee in Fairfield, Iowa, prior to moving to Albany was a key factor in choosing to move to Maryville. “Fairfield was about the same size of town as Maryville,” Fred said. “Sandi and I liked the size of the community, and the fact that Maryville had a university was a big draw for us as well. All three of our children graduated from Northwest, so that ended up being a wonderful plus for our family.” The Von Behrens believe in being involved in their community, and a magnet they keep on their refrigerator is inscribed with the philosophy they have always lived by. It says: “God gave us two hands: one to help ourselves and one to help oth-
ers.” “We really try to live by that motto,” Sandi said. “But there are so many people in Maryville who do so much more than we do that we don’t feel like we deserve this honor. At the very least, there should be a lot of people riding in the grand marshal car with us.” Now retired, Fred continues to stay involved in various service clubs and organizations. For her part, Sandi serves as one of Maryville’s biggest cheerleaders through her work with the Chamber’s New Resident Program. “One thing I hear all of the time from people I meet through the New Resident Program is how friendly the people of Maryville truly are,” Sandi said. “Fred and I couldn’t agree more.” Though committed to service, Fred said that since retirement he has learned to balance volunteerism and family. “I said yes to everything during my
first year of retirement,” Fred said. “That turned into kind of a long year, and I found I didn’t have enough time to spend with my own family. Now I’m involved in the programs that I really enjoy and have fun with.” Fred is also quick to point out that without Sandi’s support he couldn’t and wouldn’t be nearly as involved as he is. “If Sandi wasn’t as supportive as she is, I wouldn’t be able to help out as much as I do,” Fred said. “But she’s great about it, and she knows how much I enjoy it. Plus, we get to do a lot of the activities together.” The Nodaway County Fair Parade begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 19. The new parade route, necessitated by upcoming construction work on Fourth Street, begins at Seventh and Walnut streets and proceeds east on Seventh before turning north on North Main.

Days of ‘Fairadise’ takes lots of planning By TONY BROWN Staff writer
Back in February, in the midst of a snowy, cold northwest Missouri winter, planning for this year’s Nodaway County Fair was already underway. Braving the elements, a dozen members of the Nodaway County Fair Board made the long drive to Columbia for the annual Missouri Association of Fairs and Festivals meeting, a gathering that attracted representatives from nearly 200
fairs and other public celebrations statewide. Brian McPherson, who has been a member of the local fair board since the 1980s, said the convention is a chance for fair organizers from around the state to talk and share ideas while meeting with entertainers, booking agents, food concession owners and carnival operators. While in Columbia, McPherson said the Nodaway group also participated in a number of seminars, including one about
how to more effectively use the fair’s website as a marketing and information tool. Another session included a discussion about how to ensure the safety of animals, exhibitors and audience members during youth livestock shows, which in Nodaway County begin a couple of days before the fair and continue through the week at the Community Building just west of town. “This is a chance for people to see what’s new in the industry and to learn
about things that will make our fairs better,” McPherson said. One gratifying lesson McPherson said the local group learned was that, in many respects, Nodaway County has got this fair thing figured out. “That was the best part of the whole deal,” he said. “When we started coming to this, nobody knew where Nodaway County was or what it was. But now we have one of the most respected fairs in the state of Missouri. We have things that no other fair has figured out how to do as well as we do.” One of those things is free admission to the courthouse square, which will serve again as the midway and entertainment venue during this year’s fair run Thursday, July 17, through Saturday, July 19. The key to keeping much of the fair free of charge, McPherson said, has been loyal sponsorship by local businesses, a luxury festivals in other towns often don’t enjoy to the same extent. “Everybody can come to and enjoy the fair,” McPherson said, “and except for food and carnival rides it doesn’t cost them anything. That only happens because of the great sponsors we have in Nodaway County. It’s a great big help. Without those guys we wouldn’t be able to do it. In fact, that’s probably the most important part (of the fair’s success).” In addition to serving on the Nodaway County Fair Board, McPherson has spent 16 years of service as a member and past president of the Missouri Fair Board, where he represented District 1. He stepped down at this year’s meeting but is being replaced by Dr. Vince Shelby, another Nodaway County resident. McPherson said that it’s unusual for a single county to have representation at the state level for such an extended span, and said Shelby’s selection speaks well for what the Nodaway fair has been able to accomplish over the past 25 years. “We’re always hoping for a bigger and better fair,” said McPherson, adding that Fair Board membership is open-ended, and that anyone who wants to help out is welcome. “You just have to love the fair,” he said. “It takes that.” Anyone wishing to join the Nodaway County Fair Board, or help out in other ways, can call Chairman Tom Martin at (660) 582-0689.

Fair parade moved to 7th, Main streets By TONY BROWN Staff writer

Everybody loves the Nodaway County Fair Parade — but don’t look for it on West Fourth Street this year. The parade’s traditional route will be transformed into a construction site later this summer as crews work to complete a $2 million streetscape project. Instead, the procession will begin on the eastern edge of the Northwest Missouri State University campus then proceed down Seventh Street and up North Main to Eleventh Street.
It’s almost fair time in Nodaway County, and families from Burlington Junction to Guilford are looking forward to the annual parade Saturday, July 19, that will again be hosted by the Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce. But don’t set up your lawn chair and open your cooler on West Fourth Street, the procession’s traditional route. It won’t be there. That’s because West Fourth will be a construction site by mid-July as work gets underway on a $2 million paving and streetscape project designed to connect the corridor architecturally with the downtown square, in addition to adding improved pedestrian access, decorative lighting and signage, and landscaping. Welcome as those improvement will be, work on the project means that Fourth Street will hardly be an ideal place for a festival come mid-July. So Chamber officials are moving the pro-
cession north to Seventh Street. The new route, east on West Seventh then north on North Main, will begin at a staging area that takes advantage of the large Northwest Missouri State University parking lots behind Roberta Hall. Chamber Executive Director Melanie Smith noted that there are ample sidewalks along the route to accommodate spectators, and that the parade will pass directly along the western edge of Franklin Park at the corner of Main and Seventh, which should offer a great location for families wishing to view the passing pageantry. Once headed north on Main, the parade will continue to Eleventh Street, though drivers of big floats and large farm implements may want to keep going as far as Sixteenth Street, which offers wider traffic lanes. Smith said the Chamber is working to get the word out early regarding the new route in order to avoid confusion. She said the route change is a temporary expedient, and that she expects the parade to return to Fourth Street in 2015.

Area children will have the opportunity to lead the Nodaway County Fair Parade by registering for the children’s parade just before this year’s march begins. Participants can register for free for the Kids Parade at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 19, in the parking lot at the corner of Seventh and Walnut streets. The parade begins at 9:30 a.m. “They don’t have to show up early,” Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Melanie Smith said. “They can just show up and we will make room for them in the parade lineup.”
There isn’t a set age bracket for the Kids Parade, but participants are normally accompanied by a parent during the march, Smith said. While the regular parade will travel from behind Roberta Hall on the campus of Northwest Missouri State University along Seventh Street to Main Street then north to Eleventh Street, the Kids Parade will, for the most part, end at Franklin Park at the corner of Seventh and Main streets. “The Kids Parade participants are welcome to do the entire parade, but since they are usually walking or riding bicycles they don’t do the whole route,” Smith said. “It might be a little long for some of the younger participants.”
Chris Cakes flapjacks greet fairgoers By DALTON VITT Staff writer
A pancake breakfast will greet early birds on Saturday, July 19, at the Nodaway County Fair. At 7 a.m. Saturday morning, the Fair Board will host a pancake breakfast at Franklin Park. Free-will donations will be accepted, and anyone with a taste for hotcakes is welcome. The money raised will go toward the cost of producing the fair. Chris Cakes is providing the pancakes. Board members will set up, serve and clean up. During the morning feed, Hapkido students from Duvall’s Academy of Martial Arts will perform at Franklin Park alongside dancers from A Step Ahead Dance Company.
Performances begin at 8 a.m. A Step Ahead will also perform downtown at 7:15 p.m. Friday, July 18, following a concert by the Nodaway County Band. “We have been looking forward to performing at the fair since last year,” A Step Ahead Director Jean Patee-Merrill said. “When we contacted the Fair Board last year, it was too late to be a participant. That was one of the first things on our list this year was to make sure we made the proper contacts to get on their list.” The breakfast will be followed by the fair parade, which begins at 9:30 a.m.

Local talent will take the stage at Nodaway County Fair MARYVILLE, Mo. — Talent from across the area will take the stage at the Nodaway County Fair at 8 p.m. Friday, July 18, during the 33rd annual Country Showdown, billed as the “largest and longest-running country music talent search” in the United States. Area finalists set to perform on the main stage on the courthouse square include Mike Molnar, Burlington Junction; Tammy Downing, Grant City; Joe Avery, California, Mo.; Shelby Bever, Maryville; Chance Clement, Skidmore; Codi Nuckolls, Maryville; Cory Cronk, Lincoln, Neb.; Scott and Nicole, Watson; Drew Miller, Memphis, Mo.; and Tim Clark, Skidmore.
The top performer will win $500 and move on to state-level competition. Judges for this year’s competition will be Jim Wymore, Roger Mick, and Ben Briley. Head judge Wymore, who has worked in the music and entertainment industry for more than 50 years, is a promoter and manager associated with such acts as Rock N Country and the Jerry Forney Blues Band. Mick is a veteran bass guitarist who started out with the Gladys Hefner Trio in Maitland and who has also worked with Art Brill and the Honkytonk Heroes. He appeared on the Budweiser stage at the Iowa State
Fair in 1996 and 2004. Special guest judge Briley was a finalist on American Idol this year, placing 11th overall. He will perform with Nashville recording artist and Maryville native Mitch Gallagher on the main stage Thursday, July 17, the fair’s opening night. Showdown winners from throughout the state will gather at Mozingo Lake Recreation Park Oct. 11, where the winner will receive $1,000 and advance to regional competition later in the fall. From there, five regional winners will receive an all-expense paid trip to the national final in Nashville and a shot at a $100,000 grand prize.
Just before the Texaco Country Showdown July 18, a local band will perform on the Maryville square to welcome Nodaway County Fair-goers. The Nodaway County Band, comprised of players from throughout the county, will display its collective musicianship for the public at 6:30 p.m. on Friday during the fair. Amy Haddock, one of the band’s founders, will lead a crew of about 20 musicians who play percussion, brass and woodwind instruments. Members of the Nodaway County Band range from middle school students to professors at Northwest Missouri State University. “I’m hoping for a really good sound,” Haddock said. “We’ve got this wicked trumpet section — wicked in a good way. We’ve got some places too that we can improve, but overall, I think it’s really good.” The band will play tunes ranging from a song by Journey to patriotic standards just after a “Welcome to the Fair” introduction at 6 p.m. “We’re way excited,” Haddock said. “That’s been the most fun of all, just people excited to get their instruments out of the closet. Some of them haven’t played in years or haven’t had an outlet. Some of us are directors, so we play with our groups, but we’re really excited to do this.”

The Nodaway County Fair to host quilt show and contest July 16-19 MARYVILLE, Mo. — In cooperation with the Krazy Quilters of Maryville, the Nodaway County Fair will host a quilt show and contest July 16-19, in the lower level of the administration building on the northeast corner of the square. Elevators and air conditioning are in the building. The quilt show will be open from Thursday - Saturday night. Quilters of all ages are encouraged to bring in quilts to be shown and/or judged. The show will include the following categories: machine pieced/hand quilted; machine pieced/machine quilted - twin; machine pieced/machine quilted – full; machine pieced/machine quilted – queen; machine pieced/machine quilted – king; baby quilts; appliquéd quilts/machine or hand quilted; quilts made by youth that are 16 years and younger; small quilts/wall hanging; T-shirt or photo quilts and open category.
Those who would like to enter a quilt or quilts in the show should bring them to the administration building between 2 and 6 pm, Wednesday, July 16. A $100 prize will be awarded for the Grand Prize – Judges Choice. A $25 prize will be given for the People’s Choice and all visitors coming to the show will vote on the People’s Choice. In addition to the show, Bed Turning Programs will be held at 5 pm, Friday, July 18 and at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 19 in the lower level of the administration building. Quilters are encouraged to bring quilts with a history or antique quilts to be used in the bed turning. Please write a short paragraph about the quilts you bring. These quilts will not be judged. In addition to the show, there will be a handkerchief display of new, old, antique and unique handkerchiefs. Any handkerchiefs to show should be brought Wednes-
day during registration. These will not be judged. Official rules are as follows: Each quilt to be entered must have an entry blank securely fastened to the back of the quilt on the upper right hand corner. The entry blank should be fastened with safety pins. Please do not use straight pins; Quilts must be made from 2009 to the present; Each quilt displayed for judging may have or does not have to have a sleeve; Only cotton or cotton blends may be entered. Double knits will not be accepted for judging; You or a designated representative must be at the Administration Building between 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to pick up quilts on Sunday, July 20, 2014; There is no entry fee for submitting a quilt; The building is locked during the hours the show is not open for public viewing. Official hostesses will be on duty during show hours.

Motorcyle Show scheduled as part of the Nodaway County Fair A motorcycle show will again be held during the Nodaway County Fair. Registration will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, with the bikes on display from 5 to 8 p.m. on the east side of the square. Judging ends at 8 p.m.

“Barnyard Bash Christmas in July” returns to Fair with afternoon show Returning to the Nodaway County Fair this summer, the FBC Prayz Puppet Team celebrates the yuletide season a few months early as they present “Barnyard Bash Christmas in July” in the Fellowship Hall of First Christian Church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 19. Featuring gospel and country versions of well known carols and songs sung by a variety of puppets, the show will offer a festive way for families to beat the heat. This particular program came about as a result of adapting the original “Heavenly Hoedown Barnyard Bash” program for Christmas presentations. Both programs began as an entry in the 2008 Nodaway County Fair Parade. The theme that year was ‘Barnyard Bash’ and First Baptist Church entered a float with the barn stage, as well as a lot of the puppets featured in the show. Parkdale Manor asked the puppet team to present a show for residents in Fall 2008 and “Heavenly Hoedown Barnyard Bash” was developed from the music, barn and puppets featured in the parade. Using the same ‘Barnyard’ theme, “Barnyard Bash Christmas” was originally presented at First Baptist Church, Maryville, and was last seen at the Nodaway County Senior Center on December 25, 2013, as part of “It’s A Real Christmas.” The FBC Prayz Puppet Team is a ministry of the First Baptist Church, Maryville. It was
founded in 1996 by Naoma and Lisa Smeltzer, a mother and daughter team, who serve as co-directors and puppeteers. The team has participated in Puppetry Festivals in Missouri,
Kansas and Oklahoma; and has presented programs at area churches, church camp, schools, nursing homes, the Nodaway Senior Center and at Beal Park.

Open Exhibits to be on display for viewing The Nodaway County Fair will once again feature Open Exhibits to be on display July 17-19 in the Nodaway County Administration Center’s Community Room, 403 North Market, Maryville. The exhibits will be open for the public to view from 5 - 10 pm on Thursday, July 17, from 10 am - 10 pm on Friday, July 18, and Saturday, July 19. All work submitted must be the exhibitor’s original work and not previously exhibited at a Nodaway County Fair. Each entry must have an entry tag, including the name and address of the exhibitor, plus the class number. All entries will be received in the Community Room of the Nodaway County Administration Center located at the corner of East Fourth Street and North Market from 9 am - 1 pm, Thursday, July 17. Judging will take place at 2 pm on Thursday. There will be no admittance from 1 - 5 pm during judging and arranging. Youth exhibits for those under 18 will be judged on the merits of each individual entry and not in competition with the 4-H exhibits. Every entry will receive a participation ribbon and judging is on an individual item basis, not compared to others in the class. Blue, red and white ribbons are awarded in every category. All exhibits must be picked up between noon and 4 pm, Sunday, July 20, at the Administration Center. As a tip, it is recommended to bring address labels to expedite the registration process if there are multiple exhibits from one person. Livestock shows are the true ‘heart’ of fair By TONY BROWN Staff writer

Youngsters from throughout the region will display their chickens, rabbits, pigs, goats and beef and dairy cattle in the show ring adjoining the Northwest Missouri Regional Airport beginning Tuesday, July 15, at this year’s Nodaway County Fair.
Most town-dwellers think the Nodaway County Fair will begin on Thursday, July 17, when the midway lights go on, the Ferris wheel starts to turn, and country music blares from the main stage on the courthouse square. But that’s not true. The fair — and for many farm folks across northwest Missouri, the true heart of the summer celebration — actually begins two days earlier on Tuesday, July 15. That’s when dozens of 4-H and FFA youngsters from Nodaway and other counties across the region begin arriving to display their prized livestock. As usual, this year’s round of livestock exhibits and judging will take place at the Nodaway County Community Building arena west of town adjoining Northwest Missouri Regional Airport. The opening event is the poultry show with check-in scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 15. The poultry show begins at 6 p.m. with rabbits to follow at 6:30.

Livestock exhibits continue July 16 with swine, goats and sheep. Swine check-in runs from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. followed by the 9 a.m. swine show. Goat check-in runs from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. with the goat show set to follow at 3 p.m. To round out the day, sheep check-in is available from 5 pm. to 6 p.m. with the sheep show starting at 7 p.m. The final day of the livestock exhibition is July 17. Beef and dairy check-in is set for 8 a.m.-9 a.m., and the beef and dairy show begins at 10 a.m. with heifers followed by dairy and steers. The annual livestock super begins at 5 p.m., and the sale following an hour later. Entry fees for beef, dairy, goats, sheep and swine are $5 per head. Poultry fee is $2 per head. Contestants should note that health certificates will be required by request of the show veterinarian, as are SMQA/PQA cards.
