Spoofhounds focused on this season, not the past

Matt Webb and the Maryville High School football team don’t like to talk about the winning streak and the fact that they have went 15-0 in each of the last two seasons and won the last two Class 3 Show-Me Showdowns.

The only signs you see of the titles are the rubberbands coaches and players wear that say “2013 State Champions” and the years up on the Hound Pound press box

signifying the 30-0 run the Spoofhounds enter the season on.

“It’s never about 31, it’s about 1-0,” Webb said. “It’s never been about the streak, it’s about the players. It’s about developing an identity. We’re gonna focus on getting 31 and it starts with developing an identity, the process and playing physical football.”

Maryville’s identity starts and ends up front on both offense and defense. The Hounds are going to be physical, which is no sur-

prise since they ran for more than 4,600 yards last season and threw for just over 1,100 more while scoring 39.3 points per game.

“Obviously, offensively we’re returning seven starters,” Webb said. “For us, it begins and ends up front on our offensive line and to be able to return three of our five offensive linemen in (first team All-Stater) Jacob Cacek, Brendan Weybrew and Nate Colwell is important.”

It also helps having the three running backs that

make up the Spoofhounds vaunted Wing T attack back as well.

Brody McMahon, the 2013 Class 3 Offensive Player of the Year, returns for his senior campaign after rushing for 1,267 yards and 14 touchdowns a year ago and catching nine passes for 198 yards and three more scores to earn first team AllState honors for the second consecutive year. He earned the honor as a utility player in 2012.

Joining him in the backfield are junior running back Dakota Beemer (935 yards, nine touchdowns) and senior Payden Dawson (439 yards, seven touchdowns, 280 receiving yards, five touchdowns). All three backs earned All-Conference and All-District honors a year ago.

“Those three guys in the backfield are huge for us,” Webb said.

On the offensive line, juniors Joe McClurg and Hayden Taylor fill the two vacant positions after the Hounds graduated two seniors, including All-State left tackle Jackson Morrison, who is a redshirt freshman with Northwest this fall.

Webb, the 2013 Class 3 Coach of the Year, said junior Dustin Piper and sophomores Blake Schreck and Frederick Goudge are battling for the tight end position while senior Hagen Snow returns at wide receiver.

Right now, it appears sophomore Trey Oglesby

will get the first crack at filling the shoes of Trent Nally, who scored 35 touchdowns (22 rushing) and was named the Class 3 Defensive Player of the Year (60 tackles, two interceptions) and is also a redshirt freshman at Northwest, as a safety.

“Offensively, I feel like we lost a couple of very good players that made a lot of good plays for us, but to be able to return the talent that we have is important,” Webb said.

On defense, it again starts with Cacek (40 tackles, six sacks) and Weybrew (20 tackles, one sack), who were both second team AllConference selections on defense.

Piper, McClurg (28 tackles, 2.5 sacks) and junior Jonathan Snook (30 tackles, two sacks) should fill in along the defensive line to help a unit that only allowed 11.5 points per game a season ago.

The Spoofhounds only played two games with a score differential under 20 points — an 18-16 win over St. Joseph Bishop LeBlond and a 20-13 win over California in the semifinals.

Maryville only returns one starting linebacker, senior All-Conference second team selection Tyler Coleman (second on the team with 80 tackles), after graduating first team All-Stater Chris Dougan, who led the team in tackles each of the last two seasons, and John Schenkel.

The defensive backfield will be made up of Dawson

(51 tackles, two interceptions), Beemer (30 tackles), McMahon (31 tackles, five interceptions) and junior Chip Dunlap (20 tackles) after the graduation of Nally and cornerback Dalton Pistole.

Webb said junior Hunter Hayes and sophomores Matt Twaddle and Bryce Farlin are also fighting to see playing time in the secondary.

The Midland Empire Conference should again be tough, namely the Class 4 schools, Webb said.

“Savannah’s always a very difficult opponent. Lafayette, Benton and Smithville. Those Class 4 schools are always very talented, have big numbers and do a good job in their programs.

I think all four of those schools do a good job and that makes our conference tough,” he said. “Then you throw in our rivalry with Chillicothe and Cameron.

All those guys are very quality opponents. … The MEC is a different outlook every day. Every week, somebody brings something new and different to the table.”

The Spoofhounds open the season on the road at Lawson, a team they blanked 32-0 to open the 2013 season, at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22.

Maryville’s home opener will be the following week, at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29 against St. Pius X, a team the Spoofhounds beat 46-0 during the regular season and 34-14 in the Class 3 state playoffs on their way to the state title.

Lady Spoofhounds set sights on state

Veteran Maryville golf coach Brenda Ricks returns three golfers, including one state qualifier, this season, and her goals are high as usual.

“Our goal every year has been to qualify for State as a team and this year is no different,” Ricks said. “We have our work cut out for us with only three returning golfers but I’m not discouraged. I think we have some potential with our new golfers and we have a great course where the girls can practice and develop their skills.”

The Spoofhounds posted a 10-1 record last season, won their home invitational and finished fourth in the Midland Empire Conference Tournament before winning the Class 1 District 8 Tournament.

Cassie and Mollie Holtman both qualified for the state tournament out of sectionals, and Mollie returns this year for her junior campaign along with senior Hannah Brod and sophomore Anna Swink after all five of

Maryville’s varsity golfers earned All-District honors a year ago.

“I look for these girls to be the core of the team,” Ricks said, “and it will be interesting to see how the freshmen’s skills develop.”

Ricks said she has five freshmen fighting for the other two varsity spots in Maddie Holtman, Rylie Mundorf, Claire Murrell, Jessica Sheil and Shelby Wolters.

“We have some great leaders that are returning, so the freshmen are in good hands,” Ricks said. “I just plan on having the girls work on and develop their core skills and then see how it all falls together.”

Ricks added that the MEC will once again be tough, not only on the girls side, but also on the boys side when the spring season rolls around.

“I have to be realistic in looking at the conference. Smithville didn’t lose any golfers and they were tough last year,” she said.

“The MEC is a tough conference right now.”

Maryville opens its season at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26 against Tarkio at Mozingo Lake Recreational Golf Course.

Hounds have strong core, aim to keep growing

Maryville cross country coach Rodney Bade inherits a strong sophomore class as well as a pair of seniors to lead the way this year, as Bade takes over the reins after spending more than eight years as the Maryville Middle School cross country coach.

On the boys side, the Spoofhounds return a pair of state qualifiers in senior Dominic Mattock and sophomore Josh Alvarez.

Mattock, a first team All-MEC honoree, took fourth at districts and finished 73rd at the state meet as a junior. Alvarez finished in 14th at districts and 102nd at state.

The boys team also finished fifth at the Midland Empire Conference meet and fifth at the district meet last season.

Returning along with Mattock and Alvarez are sophomores Colin Arnold, Alex Gardner and Christopher Paris. Sophomore newcomer Tyson Jackson also figures into the starting lineup on the boys side.

Hounds ‘aspire to greatness’

Connor Kellerstrass is walking into a good situation, taking over the Maryville volleyball program after serving as an assistant to longtime coach Lori Klaus last year after Klaus resigned at the end of last school year.

The Spoofhounds went 20-8-1 a season ago, compiling three different four-game winning streaks, and finishing second in the Class 3 District 16 tournament to rival Savannah. Maryville also went 4-3 in Midland Empire Conference play and return three varsity players from last season — outside hitter Allison Stiens, setter Jessica Knowles and middle hitter Nicole Wilson.

“We are returning some great leaders that will help guide our younger players throughout the season,” said Kellerstrass, who is assisted by Hannah Erspamer and Jessica Driskell. “This is a very athletic group of girls who have a chance to accomplish great things this season. Maintaining consistency will be our most important focus throughout the year in order to make that happen.”

Also expected to contribute this year are outside hitter Leah Jasinski, right hitter Abby Van de Ven, libero Jacquelyn Ware, defensive specialist Emily Knowles, defensive specialist Melissa Berning and middle hitter Josie Patton.

The Spoofhounds open the season on Tuesday, Aug. 26 against East Buchanan in Gower.

Spoofhounds soccer looks toward districts, beyond

The Maryville boys soccer team finished .500 last season at 12-12, but did post a 5-2 mark in Midland Empire Conference play — both things veteran head coach Stuart Collins (140-149) would like to improve on this season.

Collins set goals to win the MEC and continue on past districts a year after being shutout by St. Pius X in the second round of districts.

The Spoofhounds return several players from last season to help with that task, including: junior forward/midfielder Zach Brod, junior midfielder Dimitri Filopoulos, senior defender Cody Hermelink, senior forward Danner Jacobsen and senior forward/midfielder Mitchell Worthington.

Worthington earned honorable mention All-State accolades from his midfield spot last season along with All-District honors. He scored a team-high 18 goals and had five assists on the year.

Brod also earned All-District honors, scoring 17 goals to go along with eight assists.

Filopoulos recorded a team-high 11 assists and also scored eight goals while Jacobsen scored nine goals and had eight assists. Hermelink recorded a pair of assists.

Also back is junior Michael Holley, who recorded 47 saves in goal last season, along with six more juniors, three sophomores and 11 freshmen newcomers. “(It’s a) very skilled group,” Collins said. “(They) have come into practice in excellent shape with a great attitude.”

Collins, who is assisted by Ky Hill, Colby Stiens and Shawn Scheffe, said he expects perennial playoff contender Smithville to be tough once again, but that didn’t deter him in his desire to win the MEC this season.

The Spoofhounds open the season in the Barstow Tournament from Aug. 26-30.

Hounds will lean on seniors

Maryville softball coach Lesley Schulte knows pitching and her more experienced players will have to play a key role in the team improving on last season’s 0-18 mark.

The Spoofhounds went 0-7 in Midland Empire Conference play a year ago, but return several letter winners, including seniors Ashton Reuter, Madison Atwell and Erin Florea.

Also returning is starting pitcher Amanda Volner as well as Alexa Francis, Amanda Frueh, Kylie Reuter, Katlyn Striplin, Meghan Yarnell and Jordyn Wymore.

Ballard, Michael Hill and Kathy Blackney, has simple goals for her team this year — continuing to develop as a team, decreasing defensive errors and increasing hits per game, all of which should help the team take steps in the right direction this season.

The MEC hasn’t gotten any easier, though, offering challenges for the Spoofhounds along the way.

“The MEC will offer a lot of great opponents,” Schulte said. “Cameron and Smithville will be especially tough.”

Maryville will play in a jamboree, along with Jefferson, on Saturday, Aug. 23 in Savannah to gear up for the upcoming season, which starts at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26 at Maryville High School against South Harrison.

The Maryville girls tennis team returns four varsity letter winners from a season ago, when the Spoofhounds went 4-7 and lost in the district semifinals to Chillicothe.

Head coach Nicole McGinness said her goals are simple: have fun and continue to improve.

Having so much varsity experience back will help with the improvement process.

Lauren Macali, Kelly Filips, Chloe Johnson and Maddy Stelter all return after seeing valuable playing time last year.

Johnson and Tricia Euler are co-captains of the team this season.

Macali went 15-9 in singles, taking second place in Flight 1 at the Benton Tournament and finishing fifth in singles at both

the Cameron Tournament and the MEC Tournament.

Filips, who was injured halfway through the season, went 5-3 in singles and took third in Flight 1 at the Benton Tournament.

She also teamed with Macali to go 2-3 in doubles play.

Johnson went 6-4 in singles and Stelter compiled a 5-5 record. The duo combined to post a 10-10 record in doubles.

“All returning varsity will greatly help the team,” McGinness said. “Johnson and Stelter played doubles together last year and should make a nice run this season as doubles partners.”

The Spoofhounds open the 2014 season at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28 with a Midland Empire Conference tilt at home against St. Joseph Lafayette at the Northwest High Rise Courts.

runners, we are very optimistic for the upcoming season,” Bade said. “We have a very strong sophomore class of runners as well as many new athletes. Through hard work and dedication, we aim to continue to grow as a team and compete at the highest level.”

Co-op brings together Rockets, Mustangs

The North-West Nodaway cooperative agreement has added another element for the 2014 fall sports slate.

The North Nodaway Mustangs and the West Nodaway Rockets have come together in order to field a complete football team — and head coach Andrew Webster hopes Hopkins and Burlington Junction can come together to support the team made up of former Highway 275 Conference rivals.

“We need to get both towns to come together to support a group hardworking of passionate young men,” Webster said. “I want our group of people to strive hard each day to reach our potential.”

That group will now be led by key cogs from each of last year’s squads.

North Nodaway, which went 2-8 last season and 2-7 in 275 Conference play, returns junior quarterback Koby Reynolds, senior wide receiver/defensive back Dakota Chesnut and senior lineman Ty Cowan to the starting lineup. West Nodaway, which ended the Mustangs’ season in the first round of districts a year ago, also has three players

already slotted into starting spots in senior all-purpose back Trevor Meyer, who will also play defensive back, junior wide receiver/ linebacker Jakob Cordell and junior lineman Blake Farnan.

Reynolds threw for 1,552 yards and 19 touchdowns a year ago and also ran for 178 yards and 12 scores.

receiver last year with 51 catches for 899 yards and 12 touchdowns to earn first team All-District and second team All-Conference honors. On defense, he recorded 78 tackles to go along with two interceptions to again garner first team All-District recognition.

Cowan recorded 25 tackles and four sacks a season ago, and North Nodaway

also returns sophomore wide receiver/defensive back Dakota Smyser, who caught 28 passes for 472 yards and six touchdowns.

Meyer had a huge junior campaign statistically, catching 89 passes for 1,709 yards and 23 touchdowns to earn first team All-State, district and conference honors. He also rushed for 739 yards and 16 touchdowns on

82 carries and recorded 42 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions on defense.

Cordell also had a big year on both sides of the ball last year, recording 139 tackles and 15 sacks to earn first team All-District honors to go along with 936 yards and 11 touchdowns on 66 receptions.

Farnan had 43 tackles and eight sacks a season ago as

the Rockets went 4-7 overall and 3-6 in Conference 275 play before losing to Rock Port in the second round of district play.

“We want to compete each week and see what happens,” Webster said. “I am pumped about the effort put forth by our players, and I am looking forward to coaching them against other teams.”

Coaches from both sides have also joined forces as Webster, now in his fourth year at the helm, will be assisted by Scott Reeves, David DeBuhr, Kolton Jones, Michael Trautz and Alan Calfee.

North-West Nodaway will play North Nodaway’s schedule, and opens the season with the 2013 state runner up, Stanberry. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22.

The open date on the schedule, when North Nodaway was scheduled to play West Nodaway was filled late last week as well.

North-West Nodaway will travel to Greenfield at 7 p.m.

Friday, Sept. 26 to complete its regular season slate.

Greenfield filled a handful of other schedule openings for 8-man teams in Northwest Missouri after the West Nodaway team disbanded.

Mustangs look to improve

New North Nodaway softball coach Justin Eiken is taking a play-by-play mindset into his first season at the helm.

His goals are simple, but are sometimes hard to accomplish.

He wants his team to take it one game at a time, improve from last season, improve from the game before and improve from the play before.

The Mustangs went 2-12 last season and 1-5 in the Platte Valley Conference before losing to PVC rival South Nodaway 5-4 in the opening round of districts after ending the regular season on a winning note, beating Albany 12-11.

Eiken, who is assisted by Karie Ogle and Emily Frueh, returns a pair of players who earned postseason accolades last year to help him with the transition.

Sam Frueh earned All-Conference honorable mention last season and Breann O’Riley was a first team All-Conference pick in addition to earning All-District honors.

The Mustangs’ program was up in the air late last week, as one of their nine players went down with an injury. However, North Nodaway got its first co-op player from West Nodaway — Cheyenne Herzberg — bringing the team back to nine players, although she won’t have enough practices to start the season on time.

North Nodaway opens its season at 5 p.m.

Lady Eagles prepping for October games

The Jefferson girls softball team played well into October last season, losing to eventual Class 1 state champion Maysville in the quarterfinals.

Head coach Shelly Deen hopes this time around, the Eagles are “the best team come October.”

After going 18-6 a year ago, including a 5-1 mark and a tie atop the Platte Valley Conference standings, and winning the district and sectional titles, Deen returns eight players from last year’s squad.

Returning for the Eagles are: seniors Danae Schieber, Brooklyn Stoll and Makayla Wilmes, juniors Vanessa Holtman and Jessie Henry

and sophomores Kayla Schmitz, Kelsi McQuinn and Sarah Chor.

Deen, who is assisted by West McQueen, said newcomers Emily Mattson, Kelli Schieber, Serena Watson and Shelbi Owens could also contribute as well as freshmen newcomers Josie Deen, Stephanie Chor, Mikayla Mattson, Kayley Lager and Kellie Palmer. “(We’re) very excited to begin the year, several returning players and other players that make each one work to become better,” Deen said.

The coach added that the Platte Valley Conference would be tough again this season.

The Eagles open the season at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26 at home against Albany.

Eagles look to build on success, win state tourney

The Jefferson boys softball team was “very young and inexperienced last year” veteran head coach Tyler Pedersen said.

However, the Eagles still finished third in the boys state tournament and posted a 10-2 record last season, also winning their home round robin tournament.

“Our guys gained some valuable experience in some very key positions,” Pedersen said. “We need to come into this season hungry to build on the successes we had last year and use our experience gained to our advantage.”

The Eagles return one senior: Jed Galbraith, who hit .516 last season with a .688 on base percentage.

They also return five juniors and two sophomores who gained valuable experience last season as underclassmen and will be relied on more heavily this season to make an impact.

Ben Jermain went 10-2 last year on the mound with 62 strikeouts and a 2.87 earned run average. Bryce Deen hit .394 with a .583 on

“We return several of our key position players,” said Pedersen, who will be assisted by Aaron Murphy, the South Nodaway baseball coach, this season.

Pedersen said he wants his team to play and practice as hard or harder than any other boys team in the state and develop hitting depth to make another run in the state tournament.

The Eagles open their season Tuesday, Sept. 2 at Winston before really getting into the meat of their schedule 10 days later, squeezing seven regular season games and their home round robin tournament in before the state tournament begins Oct. 3 in Chillicothe.

Young Trojans have high expectations for 2014

The Nodaway-Holt football team will be extremely green coming into the 2014 season, but that hasn’t changed head coach Josh Petersen’s expectations much.

“I think we should be in the top half of the 275 Conference,” he said.

Petersen, who sports a career 17-24 record, set a goal to finish in the top half of the 275 Conference after finishing sixth a year ago at 5-6 (4-5 in 275 play). The Trojans lost to 275 Conference champion and state runnerup Stanberry 67-28 in the district semifinals to end the 2013 season.

South Nodaway returns experienced squad

The South Nodaway football team returns a lot of experience from a squad that went 5-3 (3-2 in conference) to finish third in the Platte Valley Conference last season.

The Longhorns return 17 players and have seven returners already slotted into the starting lineup from the team that lost in the second round of districts to Mound City.

Leading the charge will be senior quarterback/linebacker Garrett LaMaster, who threw for 484 yards and five touchdowns while adding 516 yards and six touchdowns on the ground.

Also slated into the starting lineup are: guard/defensive end Ty Wiltrout, senior fullback/linebacker Logan Murphy, senior guard/defensive tackle Jimmy Carter, junior lineman Austin Pulley, half back/defensive back Dalton Warner and sophomore running back/ defensive back Tristan Freemyer.

And he returns several players on both sides that can contribute to that style.

Carter earned honorable mention All-Conference

honors at guard while Wiltrout, who had 64 tackles and 4.5 sacks, garnered All-Conference and District selections on the offensive line. Pulley was named All-Conference honorable mention after racking up 31

tackles and 1.5 sacks a season ago.

Murphy earned second team All-State honors at linebacker on the strength of 45 tackles, two sacks and an interception. On offense, he ran for 461 yards and

five touchdowns while also catching 12 passes for 97 yards and two scores.

Warner ran for 220 yards and a touchdown while adding 37 tackles and two picks on defense while Freemyer ran for 405 yards and three

touchdowns as a freshman.

Other players Skoglund expects to make an impact are: Grady Luke (56 tackles, 2.5 sacks), Logan Stiens, senior Quetin Ebrecht (19 tackles), junior Michael McConkey (131 yards rushing, three TDs), Regan Meyer (187 yards rushing, one TD, 26 tackles, two interceptions), sophomore Trey Farnan, sophomore Trent McGeorge (168 yards passing, two TDs, one rushing TD, 19 tackles), Jordan Murphy, Logan Harlan and Dakota Cain.

He said defending state champion North Andrew is the conference favorite, but that the PVC balances out after that with DeKalb, Southwest Livingston, Stewartsville and Pattonsburg competing with the Longhorns for the top spots in the conference.

Horns focused on winning

The South Nodaway softball team may be young, but head coach Cameron Christensen fully expects the team to build upon last year’s 10-9 season.

Christensen, who sports a career 15-22 record, has set goals of having a winning season and for her young team to advance to at least the second round of districts again, after falling in the second round to Jefferson to end last season.

“This team is very young, so we may struggle at times, but overall we should be a tough ball team,” Christensen said. “The girls have been working hard on improving and are looking forward to a great season.”

The Longhorns also return several players that should help them achieve Christensen’s goal of finishing in the middle of the Platte Valley Conference or higher than the 3-3 mark in conference play last year.

Kristen Nielson leads the returners, having hit .349 last season with a .500 on base percentage and 10 stolen bases. Allison Hilsabeck also returns a year after hitting .333 with seven stolen bases and a .410 on base percentage to go along with 104 strikeouts and a 3.14 earned run average on the mound.

Meaghan McConkey (five stolen bases), Mallory McConkey (.350 OBP, seven steals), Sydney Murphy, Sydney Harlan, Sabrina Trautz and Katelyn Kramer also return to bolster the Longhorns’ lineup.

Elizabeth Turpin, Erin Salsbury and Devanna Ostrander are newcomers Christensen also expects to have an impact.

Christensen, who is assisted by Kortni Norgart, said the keys to success offensively for her team are being more aggressive on the bases and working hard as a team.

South Nodaway opens the season at 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25 at Albany before opening at home Thursday, Aug. 28 against King City in Barnard.

Tobie Bohannon is set to begin her first year at the helm of the Nodaway-Holt volleyball program and has a handful of players to help her make the transition.

The Trojans return seven players from last season — senior Bailea Plummer, junior Frankie Lemar, junior Jaylee Holmes, junior Jordan Long, Kennedy Sportsman, sophomore Macie Bohannon and sophomore Samantha Keith.

“Bailea Plummer is a returning senior setter and strong outside hitter,” Bohannon said. “Frankie Lemar is a new setter who is quick to get to the ball and is an all-around good player.”

Hill, said the team has been focusing on improving fundamentals and quickness and said the team’s goal is to continue to improve throughout the season.

“The team as a whole has been really working hard on improving their fundamentals and knowledge of the game,” she said.

“I have seen lots of improvement during the first two weeks of practice and expect to see good things happen this year.”

After going 3-18 overall and 1-6 in the Highway 275 Conference, Bohannon expects Rock Port, Mound City and South Holt to be very solid conference opponents once again. “(They) all have very solid teams and will be strong competitors,” she said.

The Northeast Nodaway softball team has a new voice leading it form the dugout, but she comes with some coaching experience in Northwest Missouri.

Darlene Conover takes over the Bluejays, who are coming off a 5-11 season and 2-4 mark in the Platte Valley Conference, after spending a season coaching at South Nodaway.

The Bluejays return eight players from last season — Bailey Judd, Dallis Coffelt, Jill spire, Talina Nelson, Mikeala McCoy, Allie Runde, Alicia Smith and Vanessa Riley — giving Conover a good nucleus of players for her first season in Ravenwood.

Conover said she expects Spire, Coffelt,

Judd and Nelson to be impact players for Northeast Nodaway this season, but should have “other players making solid contributions throughout the season.”

Conover, who will be assisted by Rachael Luke, also said the team has seen a big improvement in team chemistry.

“We have seen improvement and great team chemistry,” she said. “Our girls want to get better and get to the next level and therefore they have worked hard.”

Conover has high expectations as well, and thinks the Bluejays can finish in the top three in the conference, and that consistent pitching and timely hitting will be big keys to the team’s success as well as recording more hits than errors.

Northeast Nodaway opens the season at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22 at North Harrison.

Rockets bring back experienced boys team

The West Nodaway cross country team returns several years of experience to the top of its boys roster this season, and that’s something head coach Roger Johnson said should help the team’s growth this season.

Seniors Ryan Evans and Jason Farmer return to lead the way along with juniors Levi Livengood, Wyatt Tate and Jonathon Peters.

“Wyatt Tate had a strong season in track running distance for us,” said Johnson, who’s also the track coach. “Jason, Ryan and Levi are third year runners. We feel they should have strong seasons this year for us, and (we) hope to continue our team’s growth this season.”

Tate ran the 1,600-meter in 5:35.44 and

the 3,200-meter in 11:35.69 last track season and also competed in the 400-meter dash. Last fall, his best 5,000-meter time was 22:02.

Livengood is also coming off a 26:09.96 5,000 in cross country, but posted a 24:33.93 as a freshman in 2012 and also competed in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles during the spring.

Evans ran a 21:51.4 in 2013 after posting a 21:12.9 two years ago and Farmer is also looking to get back to his 2012 form of 20:52.4 after running 24:40.58 last season.

Peters’ best mark last season was 24:54.

Johnson also said he expected several new runners to come out for the team this year, again adding to the team’s growth.

West Nodaway opens its season on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at Clarinda (Iowa).

The West Nodaway volleyball team should be more comfortable in its second season under head coach Toshia Jones, a year after going 2-17 overall and 0-6 in the 275 Conference.

The team beat Clarinda (Iowa) Academy early in the season and knocked off Nodaway-Holt 2-0 in the Tarkio Tournament and ended the season with a 2-0 loss to Rock Port in the district tournament.

Jones returns along with four seniors to create the foundation of the team.

The Rockets will be led by seniors Amanda Brown, Adanna Dolin, Alyson Dye and Gloria Gutierrez, who was unable to finish her junior campaign after sustaining an injury during the season.

Returning along with the seniors are sophomores Kristine Ecker, Paige Hagey and Catlyn Brady.

New to the team this year are senior Melody McGinness and freshmen Alissa Nelson and Brittney Leach.

Jones will also be assisted by first-year assistant coach Jennifer McGinness.

Jones listed winning as a team and seeing individual improvement among her goals for the upcoming season.

West Nodaway opens its season with three straight home games in the span of four days.

The Rockets open against Clarinda Academy at 6 p.m.

Monday, Aug. 25 and follow it up with matchups against Tarkio on Tuesday and South Holt on Thursday.

West Nodaway beat Clarinda 3-0 in the lone matchup, but lost to Tarkio all three times the two tames matched up and dropped both contests to South Holt.

Northwest soccer Peterson looking for consistency will lean heavily in first year at helm of golf team on upperclassmen

The Northwest Missouri State women’s soccer team is looking toward 2014 with a specific list of goals in mind after finishing 2013 with a 5-11-2 mark.

Head coach Tracy Hoza said the team’s focus is to make the MIAA Tournament and, more specifically, host a conference tournament game. Last Tracy Hoza year, the Bearcats’ 3-71 conference record left them in 11th in the MIAA and out of the postseason.

This year’s lone senior is defender Taylor Sellars, who started in 12 games last season.

Hoza lost five seniors from last year’s team, including all-MIAA performers defender Jordan Albright, midfielder Anna Calgaard and goalkeeper Kelsey Adams, who owns the most saves in Northwest history.

The goal for the Bearcats is to fight for a spot in the middle of the pack and to “focus more on team defending, transition and team attacking every day in practice,” according to Hoza.

First up for Northwest is Northern State at 5 p.m. Friday. Sept. 5 in Aberdeen, South Dakota.

A new era is set to begin for the Northwest Missouri State golf team, an organization now out of its infancy stage entering its eighth season of existence.

After Pat McLaughlin, the program’s first and only head coach throughout the program’s seven years of existence, announced his retirement in May, Northwest chose in-house candidate Andy Peterson late last month.

Peterson, who now serves as assistant athletic director of facilities, assistant men’s basketball coach and interim head golf coach, believes it could be a strong season for a program that returns six golfers from last season. The biggest goal for the new head man is to lead the team to the regional tournament.

Although the spring season is what truly matters for the Northwest Missouri State tennis teams, the short fall season provides an opportunity to see what might lie ahead.

This rings especially true for the Bearcat men’s team, which lost one of its top players and team captain, Lluis Altimires, to graduation. Northwest and head coach Mark Rosewell move forward into the three-tournament fall season with a roster comprised of two

juniors and a slew of sophomores from last year’s team.

The juniors, Sergio De Vilchez and Alvaro Riveros, pack plenty of experience from their sophomore campaigns.

De Vilchez gathered All-MIAA second team honors last spring as a No. 1 singles player to go along with an AllMIAA second team selection in No. 1 doubles with Altimires.

Riveros helped the Bearcats capture the 2014 MIAA Men’s Tennis Championship last spring by securing a win in No. 3 singles.

On the women’s side, sophomore

Lorena Rivas Jarolim returns as one of the top performers after snaring a No. 12 ranking in the Central Region.

However, Rosewell lost Alexis Bartek to graduation, who was an All-MIAA selection for her role at No. 2 singles.

Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams will play the same three-tournament slate this fall, starting with the Emporia State University Tournament at 8 a.m. Sept. 5-6 in Emporia, Kansas.

The Drury University Tournament is set to follow Sept. 13-14 in Springfield, followed by the ITA Regional Tournament Sept. 19-20, also in Springfield.

As for his outlook on the MIAA as a whole, Lorek said everything is “totally up in the air” due to a high number of graduates from last season’s teams.

Although both of the Bearcat cross country teams are plentiful with youth, Lorek said freshmen Zac Miller, on the men’s side, and Samantha Laurenzo, on the women’s side, could become impact performers for Northwest.

The season starts with a home meet, as it has for the last four seasons, for Lorek and Northwest on Friday, Sept. 5 in Maryville for the annual Bearcat Open.

Bearcat volleyball team set on improvement

After scrapping to the No. 7 seed in the MIAA in 2013 before falling to Washburn in the conference tournament, the Northwest volleyball team has its sights set on another improvement in 2014.

Head coach Amy Woerth returns a handful of key cogs from last year’s tournament-qualifying team, including seniors Gabby Kuhl, Brooke Bartosh, Bailey Vance, Lindsey Schlake and Kirsten Hudgens.

“Bailey played a big role in our libero position last year and we look for her to continue to step up in that role this season,” Woerth said. “Kirsten has been a big role player for us throughout her career. Her leadership along with her setting will be utilized this season.”

Bartosh ended her junior campaign with an all-MIAA third team selection after leading Northwest with 285 kills.

Other returners who Woerth believes will have an impact for this year’s Bearcats are junior Shelby

Duren and sophomores Jackie Becker and Miranda Foster.

“Shelby has contributed to our offense and defense during her freshman and sophomore seasons,” Woerth said. “We look for her to carry a bigger load as an upperclassman.

“Jackie became a consistent starter for us as a freshman and we look to her continued growth as a key middle hitter for us.

“Miranda saw court time as a freshman and we look forward to her stepping up and becoming a force as an outside hitter this year.”

While Woerth sees the MIAA’s top three teams from last year –– Central Missouri, Nebraska-Kearney and Washburn –– in control of the first three seeds, she believes there will be a “dog fight” for the fourth spot on down. In order to attain that final spot in the top half of the conference tournament, the Bearcats will focus on ball control and defense, according to Woerth.

“My big goal for this team is to earn a higher finish from last season and consistently climb up the standings,” she said.

Northwest lost just two seniors

from last year’s team in Bridget Hanafin and Mackie Keller, who earned All-MIAA honorable mention honors. However, the Bearcats also lost Abby Graves –– who would’ve been a senior –– through a transfer to Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Bearcats start their season against William Jewell in the Rockhurst Tournament at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5 in Kansas City. Northwest also plays University of Findlay, Rockhurst University and East Central University in the tournament.

Northwest looks to repeat as national champions

Defending a national title run can be a tall task –– in fact, history in Division II football shows just how difficult that can be.

After a 15-0 dash to the national crown in 2013, Northwest Missouri State and head coach Adam Dorrel are preparing to take a shot at flipping history on its head. Returning 16 starters from last year’s undefeated buzzsaw of a champion is a strong foundation for one of D-II’s most storied programs.

“We’ve got a lot of kids that have played and started, and that’s great,” Dorrel said at MIAA Media Day. “But anybody who knows this about football in the MIAA: it’s a physical league and you’ve got to get your backups ready to play football.”

One of those returners, senior linebacker D.J. Gnader, has provided a steady presence in the middle of the Bearcat front-seven for three seasons. After strong freshman and sophomore campaigns, the Northwest middle-man compiled a team-high 111 tackles en route to earning a D2Football.com honorable mention All-American selection last season.

“We’re all on the same page and we’re basically in the same system that we ran last year, but the experience is at a whole other level,” Gnader said. “It’s a really, really good feeling, especially when you’re out there flying around.”

The last five champions (Minnesota-Duluth in 2008, Northwest in 2009, Duluth again in 2010, Pittsburgh State in 2011 and Valdosta State in 2012) finished a

combined 48-14 in the seasons following their respective title runs. While that number isn’t too shabby (a .774 winning percentage), none of those five made it as far as the national semifinals outside of the 2010 Northwest team, which lost to Duluth’s eventual champion Bulldogs in the semifinals.

The mental hangover from a national championship is an oft-utilized reason for defending champions to slip in the season following a title, but for the Bearcats, it’s been all about moving on.

“I think it’s best to talk about things, I think it’s best to get it out there and let it be known,” senior wide receiver Bryce Young said at MIAA Media Day. “Getting it out there on the table that we are the defending national champions. It’s there, it’s done. We flush it … Every week is a new opponent and that’s how we start fresh every week and go against complacency.”

One of the few positions vacated by last season’s starter is the all-important quarterback spot, left behind by 2013 MIAA Offensive Player of the Year Trevor Adams, who chucked his way to 3,065 yards and 30 touchdowns while completing 208 of his 287 attempts.

Replacing Adams is last season’s oft-used understudy, junior Brady Bolles, who filled in for select possessions in most games. Although the dual-threat playcaller is known mostly for his legs, Bolles did throw his way to a 162.8 quarterback efficiency rating in 2013, throwing for seven touchdowns and 1,119 yards in the process. Bolles recognizes that with Adams gone and the position solely his,

it’s his time to step into a leadership role.

“Just become more of a leader on and off the field,” Bolles said. “Last year I was the backup guy. I did come in and play a little bit, but really to step into the leadership role that the starting quarterback has and embrace that and make sure the offense is ready to go every day.”

Arguably his biggest moment came against Pittsburgh State Oct. 19 at Arrowhead Stadium when Adams was forced from the game with an injury. Bolles filled in nicely under center, leading Northwest to a 2415 victory with 166 total yards and three total touchdowns, two coming on the ground.

“I think those experiences (last season) definitely helped him,” Dorrel said. “I think it will help him early to be relaxed and confident in himself. His experience last year was meaningful, it wasn’t mop-up. To me, there’s always a difference.”

“The thing that I’ve really tried to talk to these guys about — we’ve used the word complacency, staying humble, recommitting to the process,” Dorrel said. “How are we going to accomplish what we want to accomplish in 2014? I think the thing that I hope really hit home with them, I showed them this spring, since the year 2000 teams that have gone to the national championship and what they did the (following) year. It’s pretty staggering when you look at how many teams don’t even get back to the national playoffs.

“We’re trying to do everything we can to get on to the 2014 season and leave 2013 behind and find our identity.”
