Message from the Director Happy New Year!

2013 has proven that Maryville is a great place to be and we are incredibly excited for all that 2014 has to offer our chamber and community members. The Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce has long been known for providing resources to area businesses and for hosting community events such as the Great Northwest Day at the Capitol, the Chamber Country Classic Marathon, the Downtown Sounds Summer Concerts, the Nodaway County Fair Parade, and the Farm-City Banquet. This year the Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce will be adding even more value for our members.

On the horizon this year are: • Expand the Northwest Missouri Home & Better Living Show – A great new way for area businesses to showcase their products and services; and • Revamp the Downtown Sounds Concert Series to showcase more chamber members.

2014 Chamber Mission and Vision In 2008 the Chamber undertook an exhaustive strategic planning process to establish the guiding principles for the continued growth of our organization. The result of that process still guides our decision-making.

Our Mission: The Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce exists to provide leadership and assistance in the growth and development of commerce and community life within our region.

We will accomplish this through the following objectives: • To support, nurture, and grow emerging and existing businesses as well as new membership opportunities in the Maryville area • To provide useful information and resources to the members and the community • To promote marketing and tourism in the Maryville area • To stand as the united voice of business in all matters relating to commerce, local and regional government, and the enhancement of community life Our Vision: Is to provide a platform of excellence that is supported by the following components; membership services, business growth and development, community partnerships, and achieving a high quality of life in the City of Maryville and surrounding area.

Strategic Initiatives Strategic Initiative 1: Continue efforts to strengthen and develop our current community partnerships, as well as developing new partnerships when possible.

Strategic Initiative 2: Identify opportunities to strengthen communication within the network of Chamber members.

Strategic Initiative 3: Develop a plan to encourage membership involvement in Chamber programs and events.

Strategic Initiative 4: Develop a network of future community leaders.

Strategic Initiative 5: Identify a theme that can be adopted and used by our Chamber members to promote our community locally, regionally,

and nationally.

Melanie Smith, Executive Director. Since joining the Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce in August of 2013, Melanie has enjoyed meeting Chamber members and working with the Chamber Board of Directors to enhance to programs and events currently offered to add value for our members, and to promote our vibrant community.

Originally from Sturgeon, Missouri, Melanie is a 1998 graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she holds a degree in Parks, Recreation and Tourism. Melanie has held a variety of positions in both state and municipal government in Missouri and Arkansas.

Prior to coming to Maryville, Melanie served as Assistant City Manager in Kirksville, Missouri where she managed Parks and Recreation, Economic Development, Public Information and Community Services. Melanie additionally serves on the Great Northwest Day at the Capitol Steering Committee, Maryville Citizen’s for Community Action, and as a member of the Maryville Public Art Coalition.

Melanie is married to Michael Smith, Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Northwest Missouri State University. They have two children, Cooper (7) and Devin (5).

2014 Chamber Board Members SEAN SHEIL, PRESIDENT - Sean was born and raised in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. He came to Maryville in 1981 and attended Northwest Missouri State University where he received a BS in Computer Science May 1987. Sean is currently employed as a Business Process Analyst at Nodaway Valley Bank. Nodaway Valley Bank has been committed to providing northwest Missouri superior financial service since 1868.

Previously, Sean worked for Northwest Missouri State University from 1985 – 2012 in various Information Technology roles. Through the years he held positions as Programmer, Network Manager, Manager of Client / Server Services, Manger of Network / Server Services.

Sean’s wife, Paula, currently works for Citizens Bank and Trust as a Qualified Plan Assistant. She has been with CB&T since 1996. They have two children, Felicia, a freshman at Maryville High School, and Jessica, an 8th grader at Maryville Middle School. Both girls are active in Basketball,Track, and Volleyball.

Sean is a current member of the Maryville Elks Lodge #760. He is a past member of the Missouri Jaycees. He served terms as President of the Maryville Jaycees, District and Regional Director with the Missouri Jaycees. If he is not out keeping up with his children’s activities or working on a computer or two, it is possible that he is out geocaching with his family.

“I have always enjoyed working with the Maryville community while benefiting from its small town charm and innovative focus. It will be a privilege to work with the Maryville Chamber of Commerce in their efforts to improve this wonderful community.”

MITIZ CRAFT, DIRECTOR - Mitzi Craft serves as Northwest Missouri State University’s vice president of university relations. In this role, she is responsible for leading a team of professionals in the areas of public relations, media relations, marketing, design, event planning, web services, social media, photography and videography as well as a 100,000-watt public radio station to create and deliver innovative, effective communication that is aligned with the University’s missions, vision and values.

Craft, originally from Kansas City, received a bachelor’s in public relations and a master’s in higher education leadership, both from Northwest. She joined the University staff in 1999 and since that time has served the Office of University Advancement and the Office of University Relations in a variety of positions, including director of advancement communications, director of information and marketing and chief public relations officer. Craft also serves as the editor of the Northwest Alumni Magazine, a responsibility she’s had since the publication’s inception, and was an adjunct instructor in the Department of Communication and Mass Media.

Prior to Northwest, Craft was employed at advertising agencies in Nebraska and Missouri, was a newspaper reporter and was a community development coordinator for the Northwest Missouri Regional Council of Governments. Craft has served on the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nodaway County Board of Directors, was instrumental in the founding of the Children and Family Center of Northwest Missouri, was president of Maryville’s American Association of University Women. She has one daughter, Jessica Lutz, who is a freshman at Missouri State University.

AUDRA BRADLEY, DIRECTOR - Audra Bradley is a Maryville native and a Maryville High School graduate. She attended Missouri State University where she managed a sports complex, bar and grill that was awarded NSA Missouri Park of the Year in 2008 under her management.

She has worked for 97.1 the ‘VILL and 95.9 Pickup Country KNIM for the past five years.

She serves as a marketing consultant for businesses in the area and is now the Sales Manager.

Audra’s other activities include Northwest Missouri Enterprise Facilitation Board Member, Northwest Technical School Business Advisory member, Leadership Maryville past President, graduate and past facilitator. Audra is also a member of the First United Methodist Church.

This will be Audra’s fourth term on the Board of Directors.

TERESA HAYES, DIRECTOR - Teresa is originally from Montgomery City, Mo and came to Maryville in 1993 to attend Northwest Missouri State University and pursue a degree in Elementary Education. In 1999 she started her own wedding and event decorating business, which was franchised in 2012. In 2013 she opened The Nesting Place home décor, gifts, and antique store.This same year she also obtained a real estate license and is a sales agent with United Country Twaddle Realty.

Teresa and her husband Coby have five children: Gage, Claire, Abby, Casey, and Jaden. Coby is General Manager at JL Houston Co. in Hopkins MO. They enjoy spending time with their kids and attending their many sporting events.

“As a business owner I am excited to be part of the Maryville Chamber of Commerce. I hope to be a part of bringing growth and community betterment to Maryville.”

BETH HAWKINS, DIRECTOR-AT-LARGE - Beth Hawkins is a Senior Trust Specialist for 1st National Bank of Hutchinson, Kansas. She moved to Maryville to pursue her career and education. A native of the Seattle area, Beth worked as a 401(k) Administrator in Great Falls, Montana, for four years before relocating here and working for a local Trust Department for over ten years. She has earned both her Graduate and Undergraduate degrees in Management from Northwest Missouri State University.

Beth earned her designation as a Qualified 401(k) Administrator (QKA) through the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries.

“Individual involvement is a key factor to the success of any community and I am very excited to be given the opportunity to help Maryville and the surrounding communities succeed and grow.”

CHRIS WILTFONG, DIRECTOR-AT-LARGE - Chris Wiltfong, Store Director for Hy-Vee Maryville.

Chris grew up in Lee’s Summit, MO. He attended Longview Community College where he earned an Associates in Arts and later graduated from Rockhurst University in Kansas City with a Business Administrations degree. Chris went to work for Hy-Vee part time while in school in 1993 and worked full time in Olathe, KS. Beginning 1996. He transferred to Lawrence, KS. in 2000. In 2010 he transferred to Liberty, MO. and in March of 2011 was named store director in Maryville. Chris married Tanya, third grade teacher at Eugene Field, in 2001 and since have four wonderful daughters; Isabella, Gabrielle, Alexandra and Evangelene. Chris is a member of the Rotary Club of Maryville where he was voted Rotarian of the Year in 2012, on the United Way of Nodaway County board.

KELLEY BALDWIN, DIRECTOR - Kelley, a native of Brookfield, Mo., has called Maryville home since 1999. She graduated with honors from Northwest Missouri State University in 1995 with degrees in broadcasting and sociology. Her corporate experience includes television, radio, newspaper, public relations and freelance writing. For the past 14 years, she has been thrilled to work in the not-for-profit sector, first in higher education and now with the Benedictine Sisters in Clyde, Mo. Kelley is married to Jon Baldwin, a Maryville native and a physical therapist at St. Francis Hospital & Health Services. Their son, Gabe, attends St. Gregory Barbarigo Catholic School. She is a member of the National Communicators Network for Women Religious, a board member for the Maryville R-II Educational Foundation, the publicity chair for St. Gregory’s Parent Teacher Organization, a past board member of the New Nodaway Humane Society and past board member of the Kansas City Chapter of the Association for Women in Communications.

Much of that is due to the myriad of business and professional opportunities that are available here, ranging from industry and manufacturing, health and human services, higher education, national chains and small businesses.Through the hard work and ingenuity of the people who live here, we continue to move forward and be successful.”

DR. MATTHEW R. BAKER, DIRECTOR - Dr. Baker was raised in Grant City, MO and graduated from Worth Co. R-III high school. He stayed close to home and attended NorthwestMissouriStateUniversity to complete his undergraduate coursework.After back surgery at age 20, Dr. Baker enrolled in ClevelandChiropracticCollege in Kansas City in August of 2001. After graduating in August of 2005, he began his Chiropractic work in New Albany, Indiana, with the goal of opening a future practice in Maryville.

Dr. Baker reached that goal when he and his wife Jackie opened Baker Chiropractic & Rehab in January of 2009. Jackie also attended Northwest Missouri State University and is the co-owner and office director of Baker Chiropractic. They have a four year old daughter, Josie and a newborn daughter, Lily. Their favorite activities include spending time with family, Bearcat and Chiefs football games and traveling to Chiropractic and business seminars. They also enjoy spending time on their farm near Barnard.

“I have spent all but a few years of my life in this area. Maryville has been an unbelievable place to practice Chiropractic and be a business owner! It has been an honor to be a member of the Maryville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and I look forward to helping the businesses of Maryville in 2013 by serving on the board.”

JEFF BRAM, DIRECTOR –AT-LARGE - Jeffrey P. Bram was born and raised in Maryville and has lived most of his life in the area. Jeff attended Northwest Missouri State before graduating from Dallas Institute of Funeral Service in 1984. Jeff has been licensed as a Missouri funeral director and embalmer for 28 years. In 2007, he founded the Bram-Danfelt Funeral Home in Maryville, Missouri, and currently owns and operates this establishment.

Jeff is married to Kim Bram and they are the parents of 3 children.

Chamber plans for 2014 The Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce is looking forward to making 2014 our best year yet! To accomplish that goal, we will need the help of all of our members! Here are some of the areas that we plan to focus on in the coming year.

The Chamber currently offers a variety of events from the Downtown Sounds music series to the Maryville Marathon to the Home and Better Living Show. We plan to grow these events and make them even more dynamic in the coming year.

Expanded Business Resources: The Chamber has long served as a business resource to our members, providing expertise and assistance in all areas of business development. In fact, we are still a great place to come if you are considering opening your own business or growing your existing business. 2013 Chamber Year in Review January Members gathered to celebrate a successful 2012 during the Annual Banquet. Outgoing President Beth Hawkins passed the gavel to new President Audra Bradley. Award winners were: David Baird – Distinguished Service; Matt Gaarder – Spearhead Award; Tri-State Ford – Business of the Year; St. Gregory’s Barbarigo School – Community Service Project Award.

February Great Northwest Day at the Capitol was a rousing success! More than thirty business and community leaders joined a hundreds of participants from the 18-county area in Jefferson City. The event puts issues impacting our community in front of legislators and administration officials and is coordinated locally by your Chamber and Nodaway County Economic Development.

The 27th Class of Leadership Maryville, an educational program sponsored by the Chamber, graduated at a ceremony at A&G Restaurant Bar and Grill.

March The inaugural Northwest Missouri Home & Better Living Show, conceived by area business owners drew some 25 vendors, and more than 300 attendees despite a snow storm that effected the area on event day.

April Maryville and Nodaway County once again supported the Show Me Green Sales Tax Holiday with a local and regional advertising campaign.

May The Legislative Affairs Committee hosts the first of two Legislative Coffees featuring speakers Missouri Senator Brad Lager and Representative Mike Thomson at the Maryville Community Center.

November The Chamber sponsored a Legislative Coffee at the Maryville Community Center. Missouri Senator Brad Lager and Representative Mike Thomson discussed challenges facing state policy makers in the coming legislative session.

The first Downtown Sounds Summer Concert featured children’s artist Mr. Stinky Feet. The concert set an attendance record and hundreds of children danced in the streets.

The Chamber hosted the 53rd Farm-City Banquet.

Held at Northwest Missouri State University, the event featured country music by Phil Vandel.

July The Chamber Ambassadors host the Nodaway County Fair Parade. The theme was “Carnival Lights and Country Nights.”

The Chamber organized and promoted the annual Sizzlin’ Summer Sidewalk Sales.

August The Chamber produced materials to promote Maryville’s participation in the “Back to School Sales Tax Holiday” to surrounding communities.

The second Downtown Sounds Summer Concert was held on the square and featured the band Missouri Detour.

Bob had two recent surgeries at St. Francis Hospital & Health Services.

“Whenever people ask me about my time in the hospital, I always tell them that it felt like the entire staff was there just to take care of me,” says Bob, who worked as an administrator at Northwest Missouri State University before retiring. “I know the nurses and physicians were caring for many other patients, but it really felt like I was the only one in the hospital.”

Bob also believes St. Francis Hospital & Health Services plays an important role in strengthening the local economy and making Maryville more attractive to new businesses and people wanting to relocate.

“Here in Maryville, we enjoy a level of healthcare you won’t find in most communities our size,” Bob says. “That’s an asset we can all be proud of!”
