LIVE ENTERTAINMENT: Blackjack Billy will be performing Saturday night, July 20 at the Nodaway County Fair on the Main Stage with two performances taking the stage at 7:45 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Blackjack Billy a must see for the fair Blackjack Billy is Rob Blackledge, Noll Billings, Jeff Coplan, Patrick Cornell and Brad Cummings. The driving rhythms, rocking riffs, screaming harmonies and high octane live show have already established this country band as a must see act of 2013. In only their first year on the road, the boys have shared the stage with some of the all time greats ranging from Lynyrd Skynyrd, and The Doobie Brothers to Travis Tritt and Tracey Lawrence.
Blackledge brings the Mississippi blues and soul to Billings’ southern rock country roots as they bounce back and forth on lead vocals, while Cornell’s driving bass and Coplan’s hard edge tasty guitar playing dominate the stage. Cummings holds it all down and drives the ship on the drums creating the unique sound of Blackjack Billy. Already successful songwriters penning hit songs for other artists, BJB has teamed up with in
dustry veterans Doug Howard and Tony Conway in order to take their sound from stage to your radio in 2013. The boys are out road dogging every weekend and have already booked a full spring and summer tour schedule as they continue building their army of fans. Eleven area contestants vying in Texaco Country Showdown Fair-goers will be in for a special treat, Friday at 6:30 p.m., as the Texaco Country Showdown contest takes over the main stage. Eleven participants will compete to move on in the competition, highlighted by preliminary winner Michael Goff of Burlington Junction, who took home the Northwest Cell People’s Choice Award on June 22nd at Mozingo Lake Recreation Area. Other contestants include: Andy Campbell, Faucett; The Capers Trio, Maryville; Tim Clark, Skidmore; Tabi Clements, Ravenwood; Tyler Folkerts, Maryville; Allison Hunt, Bedford, IA; Mathew Mularoni, Easton, MO; Codi Nuckolls, Maryville; Maddie VonBehren, Maryville and Dakota Walker, Maryville. The local winner will move on to Boonville. The winner there goes to Regionals and the Regional winner advances to Nashville, TN. For over 30 years, the Country Showdown has been supporting live country music and offering new country music performers across America the chance to launch their music careers. And with a Grand Prize of $100,000 and cash prizes at various levels, the Texaco Country Showdown is the biggest competition in country music with a uniform judging system. “Heavenly Hoedown Barnyard Bash” to return to Fair with afternoon show Last seen at the Nodaway County Fair in 2010, church camp, schools, nursing homes, the Nod- away Senior Center, and at Beal Park. the FBC Prayz Puppet Team will present “Heavenly Hoedown Barnyard Bash” in the Fellowship Hall of First Christian Church in Maryville at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 20. Featuring bluegrass gospel and country music sung by a variety of barnyard animals, a toe-tapping, knee-slapping good time will be had by all. This particular program came about as a result of an entry in the Nodaway County Fair Parade in 2008. The theme that year was ‘Barnyard Bash’ and First Baptist Church entered a float with the barn stage, as well as a lot of the puppets featured in the show. Parkdale Manor asked the puppet team to present a show for residents in Fall 2010 and “Heavenly Hoedown Barnyard Bash” was developed from the music, barn and puppets featured in the parade. In addition to Parkdale Manor, it has been presented at First Baptist Church and First Christian Church. The FBC Prayz Puppet Team is a ministry of the First Baptist Church, Maryville. It was founded in 1996 by Naoma and Lisa Smeltzer, a mother and daughter team, who serve as co-directors and puppeteers. The team has participated in Puppetry Festivals in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma; and has presented programs in area churches, Group to perform at First Christian Church July 20 at 3 p.m.

Open Exhibits to be on display for viewing The Nodaway County Fair will once again feature Open Exhibits to be on display July 18-20 in the Nodaway County Administration Center’s Community Room, 403 North Market, Maryville. The exhibits will be open for the public to view from 5 - 10 pm on Thursday, July 18, from 10 am - 10 pm on Friday, July 19, and Saturday, July 20. The featured category for 2013 will be “Carnival Lights - Country Nights.” There will be five classes in this category: ceramic/glass; clothing/ needlework; decorative including home decoration, holiday and other; jewelry and other. This is open to all exhibitors. All work submitted must be the exhibitor’s original work and not previously exhibited at a Nodaway County Fair. Each entry must have an entry tag, including
the name and address of the exhibitor, plus the class number. All entries will be received in the Community Room of the Nodaway County Administration Center located at the corner of East Fourth Street and North Market from 9 am - 1 pm, Thursday, July 18. Judging will take place at 2 pm on Thursday. There will be no admittance from 1 - 5 pm during judging and arranging. Youth exhibits for those under 18 will be judged on the merits of each individual entry and not in competition with the 4-H exhibits. Every entry will receive a participation ribbon and judging is on an individual item basis, not compared to others in the class. Blue, red and white ribbons are awarded in every category.

Quilt Show to feature Bed Turning Program In cooperation with the Krazy Quilters of Maryville, the Nodaway County Fair will host a quilt show and contest July 18-20, in the lower level of the administration building on the northeast corner of the square. Elevators and air conditioning are in the building. The quilt show will be open from Thursday - Saturday night. Quilters of all ages are encouraged to bring in quilts to be shown and/or judged. The show will include the following categories: machine pieced/hand quilted; machine pieced/machine quilted; baby quilts; appliquĂŠd quilts/machine or hand quilted; quilts made by youth that are 16 years and younger; small quilts/wall hanging; antique quilts for show or bed turning program; and open category.
A $100 prize will be awarded for the Grand Prize – Best in Show. Judging for the Fair Favorite will be conducted by visitors to the show and awarded Saturday night. In addition to the show, a Bed Turning Program will be held at 5 pm, Saturday, July 20 in the lower level of the administration building. Quilters are encouraged to bring quilts with a 1-2 paragraph story on Wednesday for this bed turning. These quilts can be either antique or newer with a unique Those who would like to enter a quilt or quilts in the show should bring them to the adminis- story about them. Second Annual Hit and Miss Engine Show scheduled to be at county fair A crowd pleasing event returns to the Nodaway County Fair in 2013. The Second Annual Hit and Miss Engine Show is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 20 on the square. Homemade ice cream will be prepared using power generated from an antique engine. Free will donations will
be accepted. Anyone wishing to display an antique engine must be set up by 4 p.m. For more information contact Rob Cain at 660-562-8903. Participants are encouraged to enter their engines in the fair parade Saturday morning.

lessness, compassion, loyalty, and devotion to Nodaway County are among the reasons they were chosen as Grand Marshals of the 2013 Nodaway County Fair Ambassadors’ parade, which will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 20. The lifelong Nodaway County couple has raised five children and have 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. They are active members of St. Gregory’s Catholic Church and are avid fans of the Spoofhounds and Bearcats. John served as Nodaway County Clerk for 32 years, beginning in 1971. He has been a farmer all his life. He shared that his first job was pumping gas at the five-mile corner. He also worked for Dempsey-Hardin Oil Company for 10 years. John has served on numerous local, county and statewide associations and committees, including the Secretary of State’s committee on electronic record keeping at its inception. “It’s a real honor for people to choose us to represent the county in this way,” John stated during a conversation in the couple’s well-manicured

back yard of their Maryville home. Lucille has been a very active member of St. Gregory’s Church. In addition to raising five children, she worked outside the home as a babysitter, at McDonalds, at the Hitching Post restaurant and then 24 years as a cook and cashier for the Maryville R-II School District. “Nodaway County has been our life,” Lucille expressed. As in past years, the parade route will follow Fourth Street east from the Northwest Missouri State University campus then turn south on Buchanan Street and end at Second Street. The theme of this year’s parade is “Carnival Lights & Country Nights.” As entries in the parade, the Chamber welcomes floats, antique cars, trucks, and implements, horse entries, clowns, politicians, children and families to join in on the fun and participate in the parade. Pre-registration is highly encouraged. Registration is free, and forms are available at the Chamber office or on the Chamber website at www.maryvillechamber.com. (Continued on Page 30)

Livestock available for viewing and purchasing at the Nodaway County Fair 4-H/FFA Show and Sale Livestock will be available for viewing and purchase at the Nodaway County Fair’s 4-H/FFA Livestock Show and Sale. The show is open to all 4-H and FFA members in Missouri. The shows and sale, along with the supper, will all be held at the Nodaway County Community Building, west of Maryville on 46 Highway, near the airport. The shows, which begin on Tuesday, July 16, run through Thursday, July 18. The first show will begin at 6 p.m. featuring poultry. Wednesday, July 17, the shows begin at 9 a.m. with the swine, The goat show begins at 3 p.m., followed by the sheep at 7 p.m.
The beef and dairy show is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 18. All registration takes place the same day as the show. Registration for beef, dairy, goats, sheep and swine is $5 per head. Poultry registration is $2 per head. The Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion of each show will receive a jacket, which has been sponsored by local merchants. The Grand Champion also receives a $50 premium check. Each child participating in the show will receive a Nodaway County Fair Livestock t-shirt, also sponsored by local merchants. An appreciation supper will take place at 5 p.m.,
Thursday, followed by the livestock sale at 6 p.m. Please contact the Nodaway County Extension Office at 660-582-8101 for further information about the 4-H events scheduled during the Nodaway County Fair week. Little Mr. & Miss Contest set for Thursday evening The Little Mister and Miss Nodaway County Contest will be held on the Main Stage at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 18. All three, four and five year olds who reside in Nodaway County or have grandparents who live in the county are eligible. Early registration is encouraged, but not required. Registration cost is $5 and all contestants should check in before 6 p.m.

Grand Marshals (Continued from Page 20) First and second-place trophies will be awarded for best float by an organization, best float from a commercial entry and best entry in the open category. There will be a trophy for best antique car, truck and farm implement. Trophies will be awarded to participants with horses for best costume and largest group. The final award, the President’s Choice Trophy, will be presented by 2013 Chamber President Audra Bradley.
All parade participants must check in at the registration table in the parking lot west of the Ron Houston Performing Arts Center. Participants in judged categories must be in place by 8:00 am. For liability and safety reasons, roller blades, skates and skateboards are not allowed. All candy and giveaway items must be handed out, not thrown from a moving vehicle. ATVs and motorcycles must remain on all wheels at all times.
