ON THE STREET

A heartwarming piece of appreciation

There is a lot in the air right now (in addition to all the flu crap) and some I would love to announce but will keep my promise that it remains confidential. But what I can’t say now and will be able to later, it is all good. First and foremost I want to pass along a message from the ownership The Post (Mr. and Mrs. Phil Cobb) and its General Manager Andrea Graves to an

RogersGuns.com

exclusive story (feature) in last week’s Post in connection with and recognition of Heart Health Month. The story in regard to the survival of Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox that was called by doctors a “Miracle” really has been the on-going conversation piece. If you didn’t get a Post or see it, please stop by the Chillicothe office next to Silver Moon Plaza on the north side of the square. Speaking of The Post, and before giving you some good Chillicothe business news I want to mention that last Friday I got a surprise call from my longtime newspaper friend David Bradley, publisher and owner of the St. Joseph News Press. He wanted me to know that he got his first look at The Post and wanted to congratulate everyone on putting out such a printed product just three weeks following its initial publication back in mid-January.

seph, as well as newspapers in Liberty, Atchison, Kan., Smithville and Kearney.

Bradley and his brother Hank, who handles the cable and television side of the operation down south are second generation journalism people following in the steps of the late David Bradley, Sr. The News Press also owns News Press Now, another television station in St. Jo-

‘People are stopping by the Chillicothe office that now has its new signage on the door and window and calls continue to come in inquiring about classified ads, etc.’ We had a great visit and I told him I would pass along his comments to the owner Phil Cobb. On that note, Bradley’s former sports editor Cody Thorn at the newspaper within the past two weeks became the Managing Editor of the Maryville Daily Forum. I told him I knew that Cody would do a good job in his new role for Mr. Cobb in Maryville and wished we were all closer. Meanwhile, back to the The Post a moment … when you are new and the news that continues to come or you get in emails is good, you want to take a moment to say thank you. General Manager Andrea Graves said it is amazing the things they are hearing about The Post and are in the process of adding more circulation numbers to a count that has probably reached or getting close to surpassing 22,000. The next new batch will be going to every home in the county seat of Linneus. I can also tell you that in Carroll County and Grundy County folks are tickled to death to have The Post in the mail box and have nothing but good things to say. People are stopping by the Chillicothe office that now has its new signage on the door and window and calls continue to come in inquiring about classified ads, etc. The new “Here’s My Card” has only one space remaining for a business card. There are now 23 busi-

ness cards from Wheeling, Hamilton, Jamesport, Laredo, Cameron and multiple Chillicothe locations. Check it out in its full color. And how about those inserts from Chillicothe Hy-Vee and Sliced Bread Market? Now to business news (and thanks to the Carrollton folks for info to our sales reps as to what is going on down in Carroll County) . I am sure you have noticed that the EST Realty and certified appraisers signage at the corner of Washington Street and Ann is no longer present. The building is owned by Dr. Sloan and Premier Eyecare and now is for rent. Ed Turner and Lonnie Sewell jointly announced to me last week that they had closed a deal for the sale of the business building across from Livingston County Health Center and directly west of Hedrick Medical Center. “We’re in and operating but still have work to do but we invite our customers, old, present and new, to stop by and see us,” said Ed Turner as he and son Eric took me on a tour of the 3,000 square foot facility they now occupy. Turner said the new location gives them needed additional room and a lot more parking and east entrance and exit onto Adam Drive. The address for EST Realty is 801 Adam Drive. The move allows private offices for Ed Turner, Eric Turner, Bonnie Mitchell and the Litton Foundation and Virginia Wall Scholarship (Mrs. Mitchell is an officer in both organizations and has for sale Congressman Jerry Litton books and Virginia Wall books. There is also an office for Angela Turner who is operating her own booking and travel agency, a conference room and a break room and much storage space for the Wall and Litton books and material. Turner pointed that he and his son are the only local

certified general appraisers of homes and commercials. There will also be space for Boy Scouts to meet as Eric and Angela are heavily involved in Scouting work as well as other community and church activities. EST Realty was at its former location it leased from the Sloan’s for 10 years and prior to that were at the old KuKu Drive-In just west of Orscheln’s from 1994 to 1999 in the Park Center Shopping Center. One longtime business has sold and we hope to have that story next week as well as some key information about why Hardee’s isn’t coming to Chillicothe and that the American Legion home is still attempting to sell its present building on north Washington through real estate agent United Country Graham Agency. Vacancies are starting to pop up downtown, but one empty building will be filled. Don’t forget the House of Prayer hosting its sixth annual fund-raising banquet “Show God’s Love” this Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Jenkins Expo Center west of Chillicothe on 190 at the fairgrounds. There will be a delicious catered meal at 5:15; unique auction items, a review of church activities in 2016 and highlights and inspiring talk by former offensive center for the Colorado Buffaloes football team and NFL draft prospect Alex Kelly. Call today to the House of Prayer at 646-3450 (Wednesday or first thing Thursday) and I believe there are still some tickets left. Also in the sports world the two championship games of the CLAA conference tournament at TinaAvalon School (12 miles south of Chillicothe on Highway 65) are this Saturday at 6:30 (girls) and 8 p.m. (boys). The third place boy’s game is at 5 p.m. I have already told you more than I know.

Valentine traditions from around the world Valentine’s Day is celebrated across the globe. Come Valentine’s Day, candy, flowers and other

gifts are exchanged between sweethearts in one of the many traditions associated with the holiday.

The origins of Valentine’s Day are largely unknown. Some suggest Valentine’s Day was initially a way to honor St. Valentine on the anniversary of his death. Others believe it was the Christian church’s way of Christianizing the Pagan celebration of Lupercalia, a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture. Regardless of its origins, Valentine’s Day is now celebrated by millions and is one of the retail industry’s most lucrative shopping holidays. Many different traditions can be linked to Valentine’s Day. Here is a list of the interesting ways Valentine’s Day is celebrated across the globe.

South Korea In South Korea, men get to enjoy the spotlight on Valentine’s Day, as women bestow gifts of chocolate on them. In return, a month later men reciprocate with gifts for women on White Day. South Koreans take Valentine’s Day a step further on Black Day, which falls on April 14. This is an opportunity for all single people who may not have received Valentine’s Day gifts to gather at restaurants and eat a dish called “black noodles” as they celebrate their singleton status.

Women must try to guess their admirers by counting dots that are put on the note that correspond to the number of letters in the man’s name. Estonia In Estonia, Valentine’s Day is a day more devoted to friendship than romantic love. It is called “Sõbrapäev” in Estonian, which translates to “Friend’s Day.” Cards and gifts are exchanged among friends. Wales In Wales, Valentine’s Day is not celebrated. Rather,

the Welsh commemorate St. Dwynwen’s Day, who is their patron saint of lovers on January 25. It is customary to gift love-spoons, a tradition that likely stems from the practice of sailors carving intricately decorated spoons of wood and presenting them to women they were interested in courting or marrying. France Considered to be one of the most romantic countries in the world, France can be an ideal place to participate in Valentine’s Day traditions. The French have an old custom called “une lo-

terie d’amour,” which is a drawing for love. Single men and women of all ages once entered houses that faced one another and took turns calling out to one another to find romantic matches. The men could refuse the match and leave the woman looking for another man to call on. Women who were not paired up would light a bonfire and damn the men who rejected them. The French government eventually banned the practice because of rowdy crowds. Italy Italian lovers celebrate Valentine’s Day in much the same way as Americans. One interesting Valentine’s tradition in Italy is locking padlocks to different structures, which is called “Lucchetti dell’Amore (locks of love).” Couples attach the locks to bridges, railings and lamp posts, inscribe their names and throw away the key. The action suggests the couple will be together forever.

6 reasons to dine out this Valentine’s Day Valentine’s Day is celebrated in various ways throughout the world. One of the more popular methods of spending time with a romantic partner is over a delicious meal at a nice restaurant. Statistics Brain says that 34.6 percent of Valentine’s Day celebrants in the United States dine outside of the home, making this day dedicated to couples one of the most popular days to dine out all year. Dining out on Valentine’s Day helps to make the day more special, and the following are a number of additional reasons why couples should enjoy a meal out on the town this February 14. 1. Many restaurants expend extra effort on presentation on Valen-

tine’s Day, dressing the plates with special garnish or with a unique presentation of the foods. Valentine’s Day meals are often as beautiful to look at as they are delicious to eat. Experiencing such visual masterpieces can add to the enjoyment of the night out. 3. Enjoy a night off from cooking. One of the biggest benefits of dining out on Valentine’s Day is enjoying an evening away from the kitchen. Heading out for a restaurant meal means no stressing over what to cook for dinner, no wrangling with ingredients and no post-meal cleanup. 4. Learn something new. Chefs and restaurants may pull out all the stops for a special occasion like Valentine’s Day. Diners may learn more about exotic foods and wine pairings on Valentine’s Day than they might when din-

ing out on less popular nights. 5. Beat the winter blues. For much of the country, Valentine’s Day occurs during a time of year when winter is at its most harsh. Wintertime can be isolating as many people spend increased hours indoors to avoid inclement weather. Dining out gives couples the opportunity to get some fresh air and dine in a social environment that can help buoy spirits. 6. Jump start other activities. Dining at a restaurant may be the precursor to other things to come on Valentine’s Day. A good meal can make for the perfect starter to a memorable Valentine’s Day.
