The Post continues to grow as Spring nears
As last weekend arrived and I prepared to write my weekly column for The Post, I — like others — was thinking it was really too early for Spring, especially after Ground Hog Phil’s annual prediction from his home out east that six more weeks of Winter was awaiting us. But here was a day like Spring that followed temperatures in single digits 48 hours earlier and you got a reminder of Spring Fever everywhere you looked. Depending on whose temperature reading you wanted to believe, the high temperature in Chillicothe last Friday was 64, 65, or 68 degrees. Sights like kids at the playground in Simpson Park, bike riders, golfers at both Green Hills and the Country Club, walkers on the new course from the Wabash BBQ to the old prison, as well as Danner Park and Simpson Park. Yep, they were all there.
‘There is a Classified page now; the new “Here’s My Card” is sold out; the expanded coverage of The Post is now 22,000 plus and reaching into seven counties.’ But we’ll take it because it just means one less day of the official Winter season which last week brought us a little snow (not measureable), and it was only the third snow event of the winter so far … oops, may have just jinxed things right there. And of course, more important, the month of February brings us 49 more minutes of daylight and that means we are heading close to the time change. So nice to have sunset now at 5:49 p.m. and not the darkness of 4:50 p.m. we had in December. We say, “Enjoy.” This year marks 100 years of Girl Scout cookie sales. If you haven’t already purchased a box or
more (or you did and realize you want more). You are in luck. There will be cookie booths available at various locations for the next few weeks. A portion of the proceeds provides your local Girl Scouts funds to support their troop activities and service projects. GS Cadette Troop 484 would like to announce that cookie booths will be at Lowe’s on Monday, Feb. 20 from 3 to 6 p.m., Hy-Vee on Feb. 24 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Walmart on Saturday, March 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Hy-Vee on Friday, March 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. For additional booth locations/times, feel free to ask any Scout or leader. When Betty heard about The Post she wanted to see one and after General Manager Andrea Graves made a visit to Morningside to get an ad, she paid Betty a visit and promised to bring her more copies to give to some of the residents … how about that for double service. Kiera and Korrie Holcer, daughters of Ron and Jana Holcer of Meadville shot in the Elks State Hoop Shoot on Feb. 4 in St. Louis. Korrie shot in the 10-11 yearold division and Kiera shot in the 12-13-year-old division. Korrie won, making 22 of 25 free throws in beating out seven other girls and Kiera finished third making 18 of 25. Korie is still competing

and will shoot next in Parish, TN., on March 11 for Regionals. She will compete against the state winners from AK., TN and KY. If she were to win the Regionals, she would shoot at the Nationals in Chicago in April. This was Kiera’s last year to participate in the Elks Hoop Shoot as she participated for six years. She went to State five of six years and was a State Champion three of those five years. At age nine she won Nationals in Springfield. Massachusetts, making 22 of 25 in winning the title. Her name is now in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Korrie has participated four years and she went to state three of four years and has been a State Champion twice. She also made it to Nationals in Springfield at age 9 and finished 16th. Congrats to the Holcer girls on their achievements in the Elks Hoop Shoot. Mrs. Holcer is the Superintendent at Tina-Avalon and her husband Ron is the superintendent at Meadville. This past week was a tough one for me. I lost a great longtime friend who I enjoyed time with during my high school days and after we had each married. I was really shocked to learn of the death of Karen Anderson McCray-Soland who lived in Macomb, Illinois, near her children and grandchildren. Memorial services were held in Macomb last week. Karen had a sister Dana, who died a few years ago who was a classmate of mine. The Anderson girl’s parents owned Anderson Dress Shop, a women’s store on the east side of the square in a building that was right next door to the current Beemer’s Men’s Store. Then came the death of my former doctor of many years — Dr. Cal Greenlaw, who died last week (Thursday) after being admitted to a Kansas City hospital earlier that day from his Chillicothe home. The next day (Friday) I get an email from Chillicothe City Administrator Ike Holland telling me of the loss of one of his sisters who died unexpectedly in Oklahoma. My deepest sympathy goes out to the McCray and Soland families; to the Greenlaw family; and to Ike and Leslie Holland, and our prayers continue to be with them. I have already told you more than I know.
