From the Hedrick Medical Center Winter Celebration and awards recognition dinner to a sold out annual Chillicothe Chamber of Commerce banquet and awards program to a CDC (Chillicothe Development Corporation) to an economic planning and update meeting, it has been busy times. And just throw in all of the other events and programs along with the busiest time of the season for high school basketball tournaments.

partner Attorney Adam Warren took home the first place traveling trophy. They edged out finalists Robin Westphal and Ronni Clark. Other contestants were Greg Hughes, Jason Bone, Howard (The Ice Man) Moritz (subbing for an ill Eric Sensenich) Dan Savage and Darla Shipley. But before the entertainment that found the versatile and quick-witted Amy Supple, Chillicothe’s Tourism and Visitor’s Bureau executive, work and battle back and forth with judges Scott Rule, the Chamber’s new President; State Representative Rusty Black and retiring board member and past Danette Rardon The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Ken Lauhoff, a recently retired 20-year county commissioner and retired businessman who is one of Chillicothe’s best cheerleaders, fundraisers and the epitome of what smalltown life is all about. Other award winners were: Ambassador Team of the Year, Corporate Captain; Ambassador of the Year, Micelle Sewell; Personal Community, Rolfe and Julie McCoy; Chamber Business of the Year, Woody’s Automotive Group with owner Brent Kline accepting the award on behalf of his dealerships and 82 employees; and Chamber Person of the Year, Rosina Harter.

In last week’s column I touched on the official announcement of the fund drive for the Grand River Multipurpose Center where three persons spoke in full support of the $400,000 fundraising campaign and Senior Center Executive Director Cindy Ireland accepted a check from Pam Brobst and E.L. Reed, representatives of Livingston County Community Foundation. In between all of those events and programs we have been like a ping pong ball bouncing around from single digits and brisk winds to days in the 50s and times of fog and continued cloudiness. However, before I go any further with this week’s column I want to say a few things about The Post. It seems like I cannot go anywhere that people don’t say something about the new Post that was launched back on Jan. 18. People who are in surrounding counties and communities that now receive The Post after having other publications not being delivered to their homes or communities anymore have a lot of questions about and we are happy to respond in several positive ways.
The Post has been launched; it is the largest single free distribution publication in North Central Missouri in going to 21,465 mail boxes and it is NOT GOING AWAY. An example occurred multiple times this past week when the sales gals (Andrea, Tammy and Amy) hit the road spotlighting The Post to area communities. Excellent comments about the published product the gals said and those who have already been a part of The Post the first two weeks are telling their story about reaching into a large area with the huge circulation numbers. While in Carrollton they brought back this report that there are several new businesses such as Uptown Bar & Grill, featuring a great menu and everything made fresh to order; a new Donut shop, Folger’s Inn & Coffee Shop; Crybaby Farm Gift Shop and Tea Room; and coming soon a Brewery and Stone Pizza Company. By the way, brewery and wine places, as well as new and different eating places, are getting to be the “hot” item right now. Just ask the many Chillicothe people who journey to nearby Hamilton and Trenton as well as 60 miles east on 36/63 highway to A.J.’s (formerly Pear Tree) that re-opened the first of December 2016 in Macon. Here in Chillicothe, how about that addition and new red roof on the China Garden Buffet? It gets your attention as you hit the south junction of Business 36 and U.S. 65. That building was the original home of McDonald’s when they first came to town. The new J’s Burger Dive will soon be opening in the old Quizno’s in Stoneybrook. Now if we could work on cleaning up and fixing up the old Hardee’s building (formerly El Nopal) on south Washington. Never have people had so much fun and laughed so long and so hard as a capacity sold out crowd did last Thursday night at the Chillicothe Elks Lodge for the annual awards banquet of the Chillicothe Chamber of Commerce. From the social hour prior to and followed by the catered dinner from the Sliced Bread Market, it was an event. The first-ever champion of the Lip Sync Battle is in the books after being judged from an original list of nine contestants. Ed Douglas and his

Hornet center Katelyn Parkey for reaching the 1,000-point plateau in the semifinal game in the Cameron Tournament. Parkey becomes the third CHS basketball player to attain that mark this season. The others were Whitney Campitt and Cade Snyder. And, it wasn’t a 1,000th point, but it was the 1,000th game to be broadcast by KCHI Sports Director Randy Dean in the game that Parkey hit her 1,000th. Congrats to all. And, by the way, the price of gas last week dropped by a few cents to $2.15, marking the first decline here since last November. Before signing off, I want to call attention to the Cultural Corner Art Guild & Gallery, which will feature a local photography exhibit, with an opening reception to be held Friday, Feb. 3 from 5-8 p.m. Work from more than a dozen local photographers will be on display beginning Wednesday, Feb. 1. The exhibit will be available through Feb. 24 with select pieces on sale. In recognition of Heart Health Month
Sheriff’s survival called ‘miracle’ by doctors For many of you, Friday, Oct. 28, 2016 might not mean much, but for Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox, that is the day that changed his life. It started as a normal day, he
and his wife, Beth, were off to work as usual. The morning consisted of the normal meetings with deputies, visiting with the public, and tackling paperwork. Everyone who re-
members this day says Steve was just the “normal Steve” all morning long. Life can change in a split instant with no warnings or signs. At 11:20 a.m.: Steve was
waiting patiently in the parking lot of Beth’s work to pick her up for their usual “lunch date”. She hopped into the truck and Steve asked a usual question, “How has your day been, how are the kids?” No signs of anything abnormal or different and off they went to grab a bite for lunch. While waiting for their food, Steve thought he was having indigestion. They left the restaurant and ventured back to take Beth back to work and on the way, Steve said “Beth, I am having chest pains.” That moment, Beth knew not to ignore his
comment, as Steve was not one to complain. She responded quickly and they got into her van to head to the doctor. The doctor they normally see is in Carrollton — instant reaction was to start heading south. Beth was driving, Steve was alert and they were talking. He was uncomfortable but not in severe pain. In a split second, Steve was doubled over, then stiffening, gasping for air and his body constricting. Beth instantly turned around and rushed Steve to the emergency room at Hedrick Medical Center. She called

911 immediately, she was on her way to the hospital with her husband, and he was having a heart attack. She was not stopping, she was not slowing down, and she was getting him to the hospital to get help. Be ready! 11:47 a.m.: Beth was at the Hedrick Emergency Room entrance. She ran through the doors looking for help, all while Steve was still in the van outside. She ran back outside, with the thought that she has left Steve alone. Outside, people started arriving, Jodi Keller, started CPR on Steve, his lips were blue, he had no pulse. The EMS arrived, then the nurses and doctors. Steve was not in good shape. They started chest compressions right out on the concrete, doing whatever it took to get a pulse. With the deputies by her side, Beth waited for any news on Steve’s condition. She knew things were not good and they were doing all they could to help him, but Steve was very unstable. He had lost his pulse again. They worked to get Steve stable so he could be life-flighted to St. Luke’s on the Plaza in Kansas City. UnSee HEART Page 11

Heart Health Continued from Page 10 sure if he was going to make it, and not knowing whether or not it would be her final goodbye, Beth was able to be with Steve one last time before they loaded him on the helicopter. 1:30 p.m.: Deputies Michael Claypole, Sindy Fitzpatrick and Chris Mueller were right there to assist Beth with getting her to St. Luke’s to be there for Steve. “On the way to the city, we received the best phone call, Steve had made it to St. Luke’s … ALIVE,” Beth said. Upon arrival to the hospital, Steve was in the Cath lab, later to find out he had coded again during the placement of stents. They had the chest compression vest on him while doing surgery. Steve made it through surgery; however, things were still not good. The doctor came out to visit with Beth; they were told they didn’t expect Steve to make it. Beth was not giving up; she was able to see Steve again. In a Heart Trauma ICU room filled with more than 15 doctors, nurses and staff still tending to his condition, she went up to Steve, leaned her head next to his and whispered to him, “Stevie, I love you and I’m here with you, do you want to snuggle?” Steve responded, he leaned his head into hers. Beth knew he was in there. Friday Night: Through the first night, Beth, the deputies and family stayed together praying, and kept strong. This was going to be a long ordeal. It was an overwhelming sight, Steve had 17 bags of IV fluids/ meds going in him, he was starting to swell and was on a ventilator, but he was ALIVE. Steve had 90 minutes of CPR and he was in a medically induced coma. The doctors chilled Steve’s body to 91 de-
grees for 24 hours to preserve his organs from the trauma his body had endured. Then after 24 hours, they started the warming process unsure what condition his brain, kidneys and heart were in. 11: 30 p.m.: The doctors came to Beth, knowing it was bad … Steve needed dialysis. His body was filled with toxins from all the trauma and his kidneys were not keeping up. The dialysis was needed to assist his kidneys to prevent kidney failure. A port was placed in his neck and the dialysis was started. Even with coding five times, Steve was a fighter … he did not give up. The doctors were still predicting the worst and were very blunt with Beth, telling her to be prepared … that she had better call in the family. With Jared and Mariah in the Army, the American Red Cross was able to get them out of the field and home in one day. They were there Saturday to be with their dad. Family was able to bring Tracy, Becca, Mitch and Lilly. Everyone was together and praying for Steve. Saturday morning: The doctors were always around, checking on Steve and his stats. One of the doctors met with Beth Saturday morning and told her he was surprised Steve made it until midnight. Beth replied, “He not only made it until midnight, he made it all night and he is alive this morning.” The doctor stated Steve is a fighter, but has a huge mountain to climb. Beth simply said, “Baby steps.” With family and the deputies all close by, Beth never gave up. She would get little signs from Steve that he was in there, he would respond in the simplest of ways. As days and nights began to blur together, the doctors would come and

Hope was never lost even with the doctors coming to her with multiple decisions as far as procedures and tests that needed to be run on Steve. Steve was still giving signs and making progress every day. The 10th day was a milestone, the doctors came to Beth telling her Steve needed to have a tracheotomy (breathing tube inserted in his throat). This was necessary only as Steve was gagging and setting his heart into irregular heart rate from the tubing down his throat. This was a good thing, but a hard thing to fathom, as one big step to recovery. The procedure was a total game changer. Steve came out of the procedure great, he was able to have the sedation lightened, and was waking up. The signs just kept showing up that Steve was on the road to recovery; he would show movement in all extremities and would show emotion to comments and gestures. The doctors warned Beth after all he had been through he may not know who she was or have a lot of anger and aggression, thus Steve had to be tied to the bed. Beth simply said to the doctors, “Baby steps.” They began to smile when she said that, and recited it back to her, and would pass the room giving her thumbs up. “It was the little things that I saw that I knew he was going to be ok and I could never give up on him. The first thing he mouthed to me was “I love you, I’m sorry,” Beth said. Through the whole ordeal thus far, Beth was always communicating with Steve. She would tell him who was there to visit; she would tell him when she would even take a shower and grab something to eat. She also told him repeatedly he had a heart attack and he was in the hospital. Beth

stayed by his side and never wanted him to feel alone. Days went on and tests and procedures were continually run, the doctors were amazed at Steve’s progress. So much so, that the doctor who told Beth that Steve would not make it until midnight, and who gave Steve CPR the first night, flew back from the east coast to see the “miracle patient.” He stated he has tended to hundreds of codes and Steve was not to be alive … but he was. The doctor looked at Beth and said “Baby steps” with a big smile. Steve had gone from someone totally sedated to a man who could not only sit on the side of the bed but walk down the halls. “If I didn’t know better and someone told me I had a heart attack and died multiple times on Oct. 28, I would think they are crazy,” Steve said. The doctors and nurses were amazed with the progress and some even asked to have their
pictures taken with him. “It is very humbling to have the medical professionals come into your room and ask for their picture to be taken with you and they call you their miracle patient,” Steve said. The outpour of support from the community was overwhelming and the power of prayer was a success. The doctors, to this day, cannot explain why Steve is alive after all his body has been through. Multiple doctors have commented that Steve has survived “the widow maker.” (A Widow Maker is a heart attack, that if the left main coronary and/ or the left anterior descending arteries are abruptly and completely occluded, cause a massive heart attack that likely leads to sudden death). Beth said, “One of Steve’s cardiologist said that only 2 percent of the people who have the kind of heart attack that Steve had, do survive.” Steve is not only
alive but Steve has no heart damage, no kidney damage nor brain damage. Steve is back to work three days a week. He is attending cardio rehab three days a week and the doctors say he is in better physical shape than he was before the “widow maker” attacked him on Oct. 28. Steve was discharged from the hospital on Nov. 23 and resumed his duties as sheriff on Jan. 3; He is getting stronger all the time. “I am getting in shape and stronger each day. I am thankful for my wife, family, co-workers, medical professionals, community support and prayers and I thank the good Lord often. I just hope to help others and complete God’s plan,” Steve said. Doctors are in such awe when asked why Steve is alive. One simply said, “Guardian angels?” Story courtesy of Beth Cox
