The 50,000-gallon Burlington Junction water tower drained dry last week following a major water main break in an alley just north of Main Street. It took a repair crew about six hours to restore service, and the town was to remain under a boil advisory at least through today.

Main break causes water outage in BJ By TONY BROWN News Editor

Burlington Junction Mayor Doyle Gray hailed a couple of city employees as heroes following a major water main break Thursday that drained the city’s 50,000-gallon storage tower and left the town’s nearly 600 residents without water for about six hours. Gray said that water system supervisor Scott Conn and maintenance worker Darren Mace braved “at least” waistdeep water on the day after Christmas to repair the broken pipe, which created a muddy, gushing fountain in an alley behind the Midland Trophies building on Main Street. “I cannot say enough superlative things about them,” Gray said. “They are always there to work despite the inclement weather, and they are not afraid to get their hands dirty.” See MAIN BREAK, Page 3

Suspect released in fatal shooting By TONY BROWN News Editor

A Kansas man who had apparently been living with relatives in rural northern Nodaway County is dead after being shot by a family member late Friday outside a farmhouse on Icon Road northwest of Hopkins. Sheriff Darren White described the killing as a probable case of self defense, and said the shooter, Lewis Schrodt, 51, was released Saturday pending the outcome of an investigation by Nodaway County Prosecuting Attorney Robert Rice. White said the incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. outside Schrodt’s residence. The, victim, Mickey Lobdell, 34, was the killer’s nephew by marriage. At least seven people, most or all of them family members, witnessed the incident and backed up Schrodt’s claim See SHOOTING, Page 3

When you have ample snow and plenty of teamwork, apparently, you can build a pretty big snowman. Cole Nelson, Josh Alvarez, Jack Nelson, Alex Gardner, Christopher Paris and Katie Gardner teamed up Friday afternoon to build this 10-and-a-half-foot man of snow near the southwest corner of Maryville. Although Friday’s afternoon temperatures offered a welcome reprieve from the sub-zero readings earlier that week, the Maryville area woke to find their selves in the deep freeze once again. Today’s high was to be less than the freezing mark, with lows getting into the single digits again tomorrow.

Burlington Jct. man’s body found in dumpster By TONY BROWN News Editor

Nodaway County Sheriff Darren White said Friday he has no reason to suspect foul play in the death of a Burlington Junction man who apparently died of cold and exposure after going missing nearly a week ago. The body of 51-year-old Jeff Carter was found around 12:30 p.m. Thursday in a dumpster near a large Quonset hut on Valleybrook Road, which hugs the western edge of Carter’s hometown, a community of about 600 people.

‘Who knows what goes on in people’s minds.’ – Sheriff Darren White White said the body was discovered by garbage haulers who summoned officers to the scene. According to authorities, Carter had been missing since Dec. 22, when he fled his home at 602 N. Smith St. af-

ter an apparent domestic disturbance involving the deceased and his sister. White said Carter reportedly lived in the large, two-story house with his sister, brother and mother. He said Carter had already left the house when officers responded to the disturbance call, and that deputies and Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers conducted a search but failed to find the missing man. Carter, White said, reportedly left his house on the bitterly cold day wearing only “regular slacks,” a light zippered sweater and loafers, the clothes he died in. The sheriff said he believes Carter climbed into the dumpster in an attempt to stay warm, and that there was evidence the victim had been drinking shortly before he died. Neighbors gathered at the Kiss My Grits Kafe on Friday morning described Carter as a troubled soul with an apparent alcohol problem. White, too, said that the Carter household was not a happy one, and that deputies had responded to similar disturbances involving the family in the past.

Jeff Carter The Carter residence is only a few blocks from where the body was found, and White said he was at a loss to explain why, given the sub-zero temperature, the victim didn’t simply go home. “Maybe he was afraid he would be arrested. Maybe he thought someone would yell at him, who knows?” White said. “Who knows what goes on in people’s minds.”
