Maryville native and Bearcat head coach Adam Dorrel hoists the NCAA Division II championship trophy after his team’s 43-28 victory over Lenoir-Ryne.

Maryville football teams go 60-0 By JASON LAWRENCE Sports Editor

The City of Maryville finished out 2013 without a blemish on its record – a perfect 60-0 with the Bearcats’ fourth national title victory last Saturday afternoon. “I think it’s pretty cool that Maryville went 60-0 this year in football from junior high all the way up to our University,” Northwest head coach Adam Dorrel said. “I don’t know if any other town in America

can say that. That’s pretty cool. It means a lot to me.” Northwest came out strong and put up the most points in the Division II national title game since 2000 with its 43-28 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C). The defense set the tone early, forcing a three-and-out, which gave way to the offense that wasted little time putting a score on the board. Senior quarterback Trevor Adams capped a six-play, 59-yard drive with a 29yard touchdown pass to junior wide

receiver Reuben Thomas, who broke a couple tackles and raced into the end zone on fourth down. “The way they were playing, really allowed us to take some chances early and really be aggressive,” Adams said. The defense quickly forced another three-and-out and RS-freshman kicker Simon Mathiesen banged home a 28-yard field goal to give Northwest a 10-0 lead, only the defense wasn’t done. “Usually when you play and option

team, it may take you a few series’ to get the speed, get the flow of the option and I thought our defense just came out and did some great things early,” Dorrel said. Senior defensive tackle Bryant Hummel recovered a Lenoir-Rhyne fumble at the 15 yardline and three plays later, senior running back Billy Creason, who ran for a team-high 79 yards, somersaulted his way into the end zone to give Northwest the most points scored in the first quarter of a See BEARCATS, Page 7

City digs out after nine-inch snowfall By TONY BROWN News Editor

The first major winter storm of the season dropped nearly nine inches of snow on Nodaway County Saturday night. Temperatures dropped into the teens as township grader operators and the sevenmember Maryville street crew hustled through the pre-dawn hours to clear both rural gravel roads and the town’s 81 miles of paved streets. Maryville Street Superintendent Jay Cacek said Friday that his crew was ready to respond to the incoming storm, and that the city’s snow-removal arsenal of three salt trucks and four plow-equipped dump trucks were ready to go. As usual after a big snow, the crew attacked designated snow routes first, and residents living along those streets were asked to refrain from parking vehicles curbside in order to give the plows a clear shot.

A list and map of Maryville’s snow routes is available at www.maryville.org/pView. aspx?id=22801&catid=506. Major arteries in Maryville were mostly cleared by early Sunday morning, however work on side streets continued well into the day. Cacek said it usually takes at least eight hours for his crew to completely clear the city’s street network after a major snowfall. With the completion of two new reconstructed streets this year, South Depot and South Munn Avenue, City Hall has changed up its snow strategy by switching from a beet-based “bio-melt” salt treatment to a corn-based substance designed not to corrode concrete. Cacek said adding either beet or corn extract to salt makes it about 70 percent less corrosive, but that the beet compound can’t be used alone and the corn additive can. Keeping salt off the new roadways, he said, should add significantly to the fresh paveSee SNOWFALL, Page 3
