Chris Denver (Moderator)

Heath Durrans

Chris Denver is a Director in the Accounting & Reporting Advisory practice of the Transaction Advisory group. He has over 20 years of experience assisting domestic and international publicly traded and privately held companies with complex accounting and financial reporting issues, such as debt and equity issuances, sharebased payment arrangements, purchase accounting, revenue recognition, earnings per share, and the adoption of new accounting standards.

Heath Durrans is an experienced leader with a strong background in business, technology, and social dynamics. For over two decades, he has focused on team and leadership development across various industries.

Chris has significant experience in financial services, including banking, broker/dealer, and insurance. Chris is a frequent speaker on accounting and financial reporting trends and has published many articles exploring the modernization of accounting and finance organizations utilizing new technologies, including automation, machine learning, and artificial intelligence (AI). Prior to joining Stout, Chris offered consulting services to clients on a variety of projects, including SEC advisory, U.S. GAAP and IFRS technical issues, internal audit, process and controls, and robotic process automation. Chris’ clients include many sizes and industries, from nonprofits to financial services to private equity.

In recent years, Heath has worked with clients in the financial sector, particularly in wealth management, brokerage, and annuity. He has assisted them in optimizing technology platforms, improving client user journeys, and enhancing information management. As the industry moves towards adopting AI, Heath provides guidance based on his expertise. His portfolio also includes projects related to domestic and international digital marketing strategies, knowledge and digital asset management, and the design and implementation of Consumer Performance & Operational Centers.

Mike Gadsby is the Co-Founder and Chief Innovation Officer at O3, a CX consultancy located in Philadelphia. Founded in 2005, O3 helps enterprise organizations discover and develop cohesive and remarkable experiences across their entire customer journey. As a CX consultant and experience strategist, Gadsby brings over 20 years of experience advising everyone from startups to Fortune 500 brands, including Comcast, Vanguard, American Family Insurance, SEI, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and many more. He is keenly interested in new and emerging experiences and leads the innovation practice at O3. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Mike routinely returns to his alma mater to guest lecture for Penn entrepreneurial and ventures programs. He has also designed college curriculum and taught graduate-level courses, and he regularly speaks to industry professionals at events across the country on topics ranging from AI strategy to the future of customer experience.

Russ is a strategic and innovative leader focused on driving growth through the exploration and leveraging of emerging technologies, an entrepreneurial mindset, and an intense focus on execution excellence. As lifelong learner, disruptor, and challenger of mental models, Russ is an evangelist of design thinking, human centered design, and creative problem solving.

Russ currently serves as the global executive leader for SEI Ventures, SEI’s (NASDAQ: SEIC) corporate venture capital program. In his capacity, Russ seeks to identify strategic opportunities to drive new product development in existing and adjacent markets, accelerate the expansion or launch of existing and new platforms, and be a catalyst for the introduction of emerging technologies within SEI. Throughout Russ’ career, he has held leadership roles in technology, product strategy, user experience and design, marketing, innovation strategies, and strategic investments. With over 20 years at SEI, Russ has also had the opportunity to engage with executive leadership facilitating conversations on strategy, ideation, and envisioning future growth opportunities, as well as working with executives within SEI’s global ecosystem of clients. Russ extends his engagement and contributions beyond the corporate setting into the academic world. As an Adjunct Professor at Villanova University’s School of Business EMBA program and Drexel University’s LeBow School of Business, he shares his experiences and knowledge in innovation, design thinking, entrepreneurship, and business value creation using emerging technologies. In addition, Russ is equally active in the startup ecosystem, serving as a board member, advisor, mentor, and investor in various startups. He regularly takes part as an expert panelist and keynote speaker, discussing entrepreneurship, innovation strategies, emerging technologies, and storytelling. Russ is a Philadelphia area native and graduated from Drexel University’s College of Computing and Informatics.

Nigel Rughani

James Smedley

Nigel Rughani is Vice President of Corporate Development. He is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and executing growth opportunities for Vertex through partnerships, acquisitions, joint ventures, and strategic investments globally. Nigel has extensive experience in M&A including management of all phases of analysis, due diligence, and transaction structuring.

James Smedley’s practice focuses on strategic counseling of companies with respect to protecting and enforcing their intellectual property rights, both domestically and internationally. He has a wealth of industry experience in the computer software and hardware fields, particularly in the areas of artificial intelligence and blockchain technologies. James’s practice also covers the biotechnology and life sciences fields, where he advises clients on matters such as identifying, protecting and licensing novel drug therapies. James has prosecuted hundreds of patents before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and its foreign counterparts in over 70 countries worldwide. James provides intellectual property counsel to organizations of all sizes, from startups, to small-to-medium sized enterprises to Fortune 100 companies as well as private and public universities. From securing the rights in inventions and brands, to developing substantial and lucrative patent portfolios, to handling complex intellectual property litigation and licensing matters, James’s practice covers the management of the entire intellectual property lifecycle. James is also an avid video gamer, and as part of the gaming community, represents eSports players, organizations and teams with respect to all their management, contracts and branding needs. As a gamer, and an attorney, James is one of the few in the industry that understands the needs of the talent, teams and agencies from both the legal and real-world perspectives.

Prior to joining Vertex, Nigel led M&A activities at AmeriHealth, a national health insurer based in Philadelphia. He began his career in the Investment Banking department at Jefferies, and later in the M&A department at SunTrust Robinson Humphrey. Nigel holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Harvard University.
