Imagine the power of learning from faculty mentors active in the fields you want to be part of. Imagine the power of working with some of the most creative people you’ve ever met — solving real-world problems and inventing the new together. Imagine having — in your corner, by your side and backing you up — the power of a university that’s changing the face of higher education. If you want to learn more than the way it’s always been, this is a university where you’ll create the way it will be.

THE SKILLS EMPLOYERS LOOK FOR

“Nexus Learning” puts you at the center of an active, collaborative, real-world education infused with the liberal arts, that gives you the experience you need for a unique competitive advantage and the professional skills employers are looking for.

X

NE US LEARNING We immerse future designers, engineers, architects, health professionals, lawyers, and marketing and media professionals in their fields early — completing research projects and internships in their own majors, but also working on real-world challenges with peers and faculty across disciplines and with industry partners at NASA, Macy’s, Comcast, Verizon and more. Because the stakes are real, our students gain exceptional decision-making skills and are sought after by employers (often even before graduation).

PROFESSIONALS FROM

DAY ONE

YOU HAVE A DREAM. WE HAVE A PLAN. Everything we do is designed to treat you like the professional you’re becoming. Faculty, projects, classes, internships, working and learning spaces, research and global opportunities — right from the start and every step of the way, you have access to what you need to launch yourself on a meaningful career path.

TOD CORLETT ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR AND PROGRAM DIRECTOR OF INDUSTRIAL DESIGN Kanbar College of Design, Engineering and Commerce

FACULTY WHO ARE LEADERS We bring industry leaders to you. Among our professors are doctors, fashion designers, industrial engineers, ad agency creative directors, venture capitalists, attorneys, architects and biochemists. Whatever your major, your mentors will be professors who integrate their own state-of-the-art professional work into courses and projects, involving you in the latest methods and practices.

“My favorite class to teach is Interactive Hardware Prototyping.

For the final exam, student-built machines have to be able to successfully interact with people, without help from their creators. I am powered to take the Internet off the screen and out into the world.”

“PhilaU students are tenacious. They rarely say, ‘I didn’t know what to do next, so I did nothing.’ They say, ‘I didn’t know how to solve the problem, so I tried it eight different ways.’

I am powered to explore! I take students on field trips to see real-world examples of design projects. We get our hands dirty volunteering interior design services in our local community. We explore the design of the world in short study abroad courses.”

“My favorite class to teach — I love everything I teach. Two favorites are Venture Creation and Business Model Innovation.

I am powered to inspire a whole new generation of leaders. I inspire students now to become innovators next!”

LISA PHILLIPS ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF INTERIOR DESIGN College of Architecture and the Built Environment

JASON CROOK ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MARKETING Kanbar College of Design, Engineering and Commerce

JEFF ASHLEY PROFESSOR OF CHEMISTRY DIRECTOR OF THE CENTER FOR TEACHING INNOVATION AND NEXUS LEARNING “I am powered to experiment with the ways that I teach and engage my students in the learning process.

I want to actively facilitate learning rather than just dispense knowledge. PhilaU students are ready to engage. It’s hard work at times, but it’s transformative!”

NIOKA WYATT ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, FASHION MERCHANDISING AND MANAGEMENT Kanbar College of Design, Engineering and Commerce

“My favorite class to teach is Clinical Reasoning.

I love watching the students apply what they’ve been taught in class by using their problem-solving skills, practicing their diagnostic abilities and compassionately dealing with complex psychosocial factors that may complicate medical issues. I am powered to be whatever I want to be.”

AMY BAKER ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT STUDIES, HEALTH SCIENCES PROGRAM DIRECTOR AND PRE-PROFESSIONAL PA PROGRAM COORDINATOR College of Science, Health and the Liberal Arts

“You belong at PhilaU if you catch yourself daydreaming about your professional life 5, 10, 20 years from now. I am powered to research. PhilaU has given me great opportunities to consult archives around the country and around the world to publish award-winning research.”

PHIL TIEMEYER ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR AND THE COORDINATOR OF FACULTY-LED SHORT COURSES College of Science, Health and the Liberal Arts

“My favorite class to teach is Global Fashion Insights. The course is designed for students to develop fashion products and sell their merchandise at an on-campus popup shop. The net proceeds from the pop-up shop are donated to Chemo Clothes to support patients with cancer.

I am powered to coach the future leaders of fashion to think creatively and critically in an ever-changing social society.”

GET REAL EXPOSURE WITH TOP COMPANIES More than any curriculum, internship, co-op, practicum or summer job alone could do, our comprehensive Nexus Learning gives our students the kind of experience that provides a unique professional edge. They build outstanding resumes, win national and international awards before graduation, and gain experience and exposure with employers like Verizon, Johnson & Johnson, Federal Mogul, PricewaterhouseCoopers and PVH, which owns brands like Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger.

ONE-OF-A-KIND LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

‘‘

We are a university where some of the coolest things are happening. We are creating the professionals of the future.

Eight years ago we started a process. We believed Philadelphia University had the DNA in its history that connected this university’s mission to a marketplace that can improve people’s lives. Our plan was to formalize that mission in a really special curriculum that would teach innovation and would propel students in their careers. Today, that’s a reality...

INDUSTRY PARTNERS From collaborating with Verizon to create wearable technology to help the elderly, to working with acclaimed New York designer, Isaac Mizrahi, on a new line of home goods for his brand, to researching lifesaving apparel for the U.S. Department of Defense, the opportunity to work on an industry project isn’t a one-time experience but a mainstay of the curriculum.

Create a comprehensive campaign sponsored by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeastern Pennsylvania to inspire and recruit new adults to mentor young children.
