Jefferson’s Lab for Urban and Social Innovation (LUSI) brings together communities, students and faculty to take on design, construction and environmental projects in our Philadelphia neighborhoods. Through outreach and workshops, we work with our fellow Philadelphians to tackle a range of projects, big and small, to improve the spaces that are undervalued/underused to create community hubs. Over the last 15 years, our projects have included urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, geodesign, interior design and historic preservation. Public spaces can bring neighborhoods together, and when we work together to make them beautiful, our communities grow stronger.

Recently, Top Ram winner Renee Kakareka won for her assistive technology company Olive Devices, and will soon have a prototype ready for her smart glasses to help the hearing-impaired. Another Top Ram winner, Amanda McCreight, won for Mark Your Map, an app that allows people to map their footprints around the world and organize their travel memories. What do you get when hundreds of students work together to solve today’s biggest issues on a near-impossible deadline? Nexus Maximus. It’s the four-day sprint project in which teams compete to solve global problems through innovation, collaboration and creativity, which has been sponsored by Johnson & Johnson since 2014. Each year, participating students from diverse disciplines and class levels (even first-year) are divided into teams, called “Legions,” to create and present functioning solutions to the challenge at hand. All in pursuit of the coveted Sword of Innovation, the competition’s highest honor. Recently, the challenge addressed the problems of refugees and displaced populations, exploring the acute needs during a crisis, as well as the chronic needs of the permanently displaced. Students drew upon all disciplines, from architecture to health professions, from engineering to design, ethics, communication and more, to find better ways to invent physical solutions, processes, policies and systems to take on the problems at hand.

Each year, Jefferson’s Nexus Maximus includes students from institutions such as Aalto University in Finland, KEA Copenhagen School of Design and Technology in Denmark, the Paris D School, DUOC in Chile and Pace University. Students have focused their efforts on ideas to revolutionize personal health through innovation, data and empowerment. Ideas have spanned all areas of personal health, including a dictation app to increase electronic health record efficiency, a vending machine that provides sanitation solutions in public institutions and a tool to measure calories and sugar for accurate health tracking and increased awareness. Beginning With the Nuts and Bolts
Coming up with a big idea is one thing. Bringing that idea to life is another story. It takes trial and error, planning, measuring, testing, then testing again. When you study engineering at Jefferson, you won’t just learn how to dream big, you’ll learn how to make big real. JeffSAT1, a senior engineering design project, is Jefferson Engineering’s new satellite prototype that will influence a future model to be sent to space. The cube-shaped, single-purpose satellite prototype will be launched as part of NASA’s CubeSat Launch Initiative (CSLI), which provides opportunities for small satellite payloads to fly on upcoming launches. Proposed by engineering student Nick Renna, JeffSAT1 is designed to measure the earth’s magnetic field at low earth orbit, and its flight-ready version is already in the works. At Jefferson, you can find yourself working on groundbreaking projects like JeffSAT1 that redefine the limits of an undergraduate education.

The Jefferson Institute for Bioprocessing The Jefferson Institute for Bioprocessing (JIB) is the first - and only - specialized education and training institute for biopharmaceutical processing in North America that combines single-use processing equipment with the internationally recognized National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT) curriculum. Eight Jefferson students give one special-needs child new independence through collaborative thinking.
Everyone remembers getting their first car. The freedom to roam, the openness of the road, the endless possibilities. For four-year-old Logan, his modified Lightning McQueen rideon brought him even more opportunity and joy.

Every day, Logan battles neuromotor and developmental deficiencies as a result of contracting meningitis and suffering from a stroke and hearing loss at the age of one. While he can walk short distances with a walker or home health aide, he was never able to race around and play with his six-year-old sister, Ava, and their friends.
Until today. With the help of eight industrial design, physical therapy, occupational therapy and engineering students, and one unique transdisciplinary project at Jefferson, a shiny red convertible became the key to a new level of independence for Logan. Jefferson’s GoBabyGo project was launched by Stephanie Muth, PT, PhD, assistant professor in the doctor of physical therapy program, after hearing about a similar project. Through funding from Kanbar College of Design, Engineering and Commerce, the staff enlisted the help of the group of cross-departmental Jefferson students to modify a play car specialized for Logan’s needs.

Before Logan was gifted his new set of wheels, the industrial design and engineering students made initial product tweaks. Then, after watching his first loop around Kanbar Campus Center, physical and occupational therapy students made further recommendations, and the team worked together to build a fully customized car fit for its new driver.
But this kind of interdisciplinary work touches more lives than Logan’s and the project collaborators'. As his parents watched with happy tears while their son wheeled circles around them for the first time, they knew that this newfound freedom would open the door to new possibilities. “This is such a thrill,” his father, Don, said. “He has been sick for so long, he hasn’t had the opportunity to be a kid. It gives him freedom and independence in a safe way.” Logan thanked the team “very much” for the car, but he didn’t need words to express his gratitude. Everyone could feel it.

As Logan sped off to explore the world around him like never before, the students and staff felt a sense of accomplishment that’s hard to obtain through traditional classroom studies, as well as a deep level of respect for the work of their counterparts. Through big ideas, bold thinking and seamless collaboration, they were able to change a child’s life. And that’s something they will never forget.

The project pairs dozens of undergraduate industrial design students with occupational therapy graduate students to create practical products to help clients with special needs. The students work with clients to identify areas of need for adaptive and assistive tools in their everyday lives, displaying dozens of products at the end of the project. At the most recent presentation, one team created a chair that reacts and responds to the motions of a seizure to prevent the clients from hurting themselves. Another developed a passive, nonelectromechanical device for hands-free door opening. And one pair of researchers presented an ergonomically friendly cuff that allowed a client with poor hand strength to remove and put on a compression sleeve independently. By the end of the project, students found commonalities between their disciplines and the values that drive them. The benefit of a transdisciplinary education can extend far beyond your own aspirations and goals; it can change the lives of those in need.

That’s the scientific method. It begins with a question and, most of the time, ends with more questions. But that process, that pursuit of knowledge, can yield answers that pull us in unexpected new directions. Whether you’re working in the lab or testing materials alongside design students at the Fashion and Textiles Futures Center, you’ll learn that asking questions is the only way forward. Jefferson’s Integrated Research Strategy focuses on applied, clinical and programmatic research to help you advance your understanding of science and its effect on how we live and care for each other. Collaborate in the lab on semester-long experiments crafted by your professors. Study biology around the world in places like Jamaica, Spain or Ireland. Present your findings in biochemistry as you finish off your year-long senior year project. Here, you’ll find the science hidden in every field of study, because your education will overlap with other ways of thinking and learning. When curiosity, careful testing and an open mind come together, the possibilities are endless.

It’s no secret that coffee makes mornings easier. But can it help us live longer and fuller lives, too? Jefferson biochemistry major Madisyn Peoples took part in an ongoing research project with professors Dr. Niny Rao and Dr. Megan Fuller to test the antioxidant properties of cold-brewed coffee. Peoples assisted in the lab, preparing solutions, running standards and assisting with calculations in her very first semester as a freshman. The researchers tested the refreshing drink made by steeping coffee grounds in room temperature water for 12-24 hours. Fans of the drink often tout its higher caffeine content and lower levels of acidity than traditional coffee, but the researchers found no sizable differences between cold-brewed and hot-brewed coffee. They did, however, find that the elevated levels of the beneficial antioxidant 3CGA can have cardiovascular benefits to coffee drinkers throughout their lives, an exciting outcome for a first-semester freshman to take part in. Just like coffee can kick-start your morning, the handson opportunities you’ll find at Jefferson can kick-start your college career. Here, you never know what you’ll discover.

A Legacy of Discourse
Find Your Power Inspired by her earliest classes in the Law and Society Program, Attiah Brockington ‘18 has leveraged her learning at Jefferson to make waves in her Philly community. As part of her senior capstone, Attiah developed Project Community, a neighborhood organization aimed at stemming the tide of youth violence in Philadelphia. Last year, she hosted a forum where kids could freely share their feelings about crime in their communities and schools. She continued her mission after graduation, working to install unmanned Little Free Libraries around the city to bolster literacy in the community. “My whole college career has just fostered that kind of activism that if you don’t like something, if you want to see a change, you have to go out and make the change,” she says. “What can we do to take that power back?”

Now a freelance Industrial Designer and graduate student in Brooklyn, NY, Weston Rivell made waves at Jefferson alongside teammate Josiah Harris by crafting the firstever cleat attachment for prosthetic running blades. The duo worked with college defensive back and kick returner Kody Kasey, who had been playing on a prosthetic leg for three years, to prototype and test the innovative piece of equipment. The team became finalists in the Wearables Category of the Reshape 18 forum in Barcelona.

Since graduating from the College of Architecture and the Built Environment in 1999, Kristy has traveled the world, designing spaces and teaching architecture at world-renowned firms and institutions. Her collaborative project Possible Mediums explores speculative building materials and architectural forms and published a self-titled book in 2018.
Now a lead designer for streetwear brand OBEY, Mike Ternosky channeled his passion for underground subcultures into his fashion design education at Jefferson. On the East Falls Campus, Mike developed the technical foundation that helped launch his career and learned the most valuable skill of all: collaboration.
