Universal Recognition 01

PCC was founded in 1890 and operated mainly as a Polo Club during its first years of existence that led to the current horse head logo today. In 1899, the original 9-hole course in Bala hosted the 1899 U.S. Women’s Championship. As golf’s popularity grew, the club’s focus shifted and the club purchased land for an 18-hole course in Gladwyne, Pa., in 1926. Designed by renowned architect, William Flynn, the Spring Mill Course hosted the 1939 U.S. Open. This Open is remembered as much for Sam Snead blowing the lead on the 72nd hole as much as it is for Byron Nelson winning the title in a three way playoff against Craig Wood and Denny Shute.

PCC is the 7th member of USGA & founding member of the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP).In 2003 the Spring Mill Course hosted the U.S. Women’s Amateur won by Virada Nirapathpongporn of Thailand. The club also co-hosted the stroke play portion of the 2005 U.S. Men’s Amateur with Merion Golf Club. An additional 9-hole course designed by Tom Fazio was opened to coincide with the 100 year anniversary and was aptly named the “Centennial” course. PCC was recently named the stroke play co-host with Merion Golf Club for the 2026 US Men’s Amateur.

The Spring Mill Course is also utilized by the Golf Association of Philadelphia for tournaments on a regular basis. This includes hosting one of their major tournaments in 2017, The Philadelphia Open.

PCC’s history extends far beyond golf, however, as the club has hosted the 1930 Davis Cup, and numerous U.S. Open Squash Doubles tournaments with one as recent as 2013.

During this time the Candidate is asked to meet with several Committee Members for an informal meeting. Before voting on the Candidate’s proposal, the Committee will host a formal meeting so the Candidate can meet with the entire Committee on Admissions. Adapting to Changing Times 05

Philadelphia Country Club has always been aware of the changing demands of membership. From evolving into a golf club from a polo club, the Club has become a family oriented club with a strong focus on family programs and events. The club’s mission statement is further evidence of this: Philadelphia Country Club is a premier, full service, family oriented private country club, dedicated to the enjoyment of our members, their families and their guests. Our community is guided by our core values, which are integrity and respect for each other, our staff and the traditions of the club.Youth programs in golf, swimming, squash, paddle, and tennis are provided based upon the season. The annual Parent-Child golf tournament, Children’s Halloween Party, Jingle Ball, Santa Brunch, Easter Brunch, among other events, are all family-focused activities.

The club has also recognized the need for moving into the digital age and has invested in digital communication including social media, website content, PCC Mobile App, email marketing and establishing an overall Brand Platform. The Brand Platform, created in 2019, identifies PCC’s unique and differentiating brand attributes, defines brand positioning and articulates a brand story. This heightens overall value for the membership through a consistent brand identity, guides future development of subsequent marketing efforts and drives increased attraction and retention of members. Once the established brand was created, the club appears consistent in its social media efforts, website content and email marketing. The Brand Platform informs and supports the efforts of establishing the club as an elevated, luxury experience and place of which you want to belong.

The Club is also dedicated to keeping the 18-Hole Championship Spring Mill course in top condition. A full renovation of our Championship Spring Mill Golf course is currently in the beginning phase and set to be complete in 2025.
