HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

SERIOUS INITIATIVES

As a donor, your generosity is the source of our enduring success and growth. Because of you, we are able to provide scholarships, educational programs, grow chapters, and welcome new Brothers into our Fraternity. The past year has challenged us, but now we look to the future with optimism and enthusiasm. Phi Kappa Tau is well positioned to continue our mission of turning men of character into Men of Distinction.

good and loyal citizen. I shall try always to discharge the obligation to others which arises from the fact that I am a fraternity man. Phi Kappa Tau, by admitting me to membership, has conferred upon me a mark of distinction in which I take just pride. I believe in the spirit of brotherhood for which it stands. I shall strive to attain its ideals, and by so doing to bring to it honor and credit. I shall be loyal to my college and my chapter and shall keep strong my ties to them that I may ever retain the spirit of youth. I shall be a good and loyal citizen. THE FOUNDATION

TO MY BROTHERS IN PHI KAPPA TAU

T

he Phi Kappa Tau Foundation, through its Trustees and volunteer committee members, extend to you our appreciation and thanks to our Brothers who have reached out to give time, talents, and fortune to the fraternity. At the start of the new fiscal year, we began to approach different ways that the Foundation can help support the Brotherhood and the National Fraternity. It is important to recognize our mission to champion a lifelong commitment to brotherhood, learning, ethical leadership and exemplary character. In order to reach the goals of this mission, it takes our members, both undergraduate and alumni, to recognize that the fraternity experience reaches beyond just those years on campus. Your fraternity experience as an undergraduate has provided you with lifelong friendships that will endure through hard times and transgression, as Brothers are always there to help and protect you. The Foundation and the Fraternity wish to make and investment in the enhancement of the ritual to further develop the lifelong commitment to brotherhood. Your contributions to the Foundation will provide aid in developing a program that delivers emphasis to this lifelong brotherhood. The Foundation is in the process of developing plans to assist your chapter with local scholarship programs using the Foundation as a processor of the donations under our IRS exemption for tax purposes. It is also intended that chapters with chapter houses could help fund the facility through residential scholarships to the undergraduate members with the proceeds of the scholarship being paid to the

chapter’s house corporation; the chapters that do not have housing are able to develop a scholarship endowment. Please think about how you can support your chapter and the fraternity. The Foundation is involved in sponsoring significant educational programming for the development of leadership and character of our young men. These programs help create the future leaders of business, government, educational institutions, and all walks of life in the world. It is the values of Phi Kappa Tau that made us who we are today. Brother, you owe it to yourself to help sustain the Star of Phi Kappa Tau by contributing to the fraternity that helped to develop the person you are today. The Phi Kappa Tau Foundation will be reaching out to you to participate in various forms throughout the coming year. We ask that you respond affirmatively for the continuance of the positive experiences that you have received and continue to benefit young Brothers on our college campuses. We can become even greater tomorrow when we as individuals recognize that the power of our organization as it can be magnified by our collective responsibility to our Mission. It is time to pay forward for the experience that you have derived by being a member of The Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity. In Phi and fraternally,

F. HARRISON “BUZZ” GREEN CHAIRMAN, PHI KAPPA TAU FOUNDATION BOARD OF TRUSTEES, OLE MISS ’66

CHARLIE BALL, MIAMI ’82

BROTHERS,

O

n my desk at the Executive Offices is a photo of one of my Phi Tau heroes, Jack Anson, Colgate ’47. Jack was not only one of Phi Tau’s greatest leaders, but he was also one of the most notable leaders of the American college fraternity movement and was known for many years as “Mr. Fraternity.” I’ll never forget the day more than 30 years ago when he was elected by unanimous acclamation as National Vice President of the Fraternity. Accepting the position, he said that his election was an enormous honor, “second only to being initiated into Alpha Upsilon Chapter.” I think we all share that sentiment that our first loyalty is to our own chapter, where we developed the friendships that have lasted throughout or lives and taught us the fundamental skills of how to get things accomplished with diverse groups of people. That’s why, more and more, alumni are using the Phi Kappa Tau Foundation to support their home chapters and their members. And there are so many ways to support a chapter through the Foundation. More than ever before, the Foundation is helping alumni support the significant educational aspects of chapter housing. Major campaigns are now underway at Alpha Chi Chapter at Mississippi State and Kappa Chapter at Kentucky to strengthen the long-term viability of these chapters with outstanding facilities competitive with the best on their campuses. The challenges of the recent pandemic have been an impetus for alumni from several of our chapters to support undergraduates struggling to maintain chapter operations in the wake of unusual restrictions. Loyal alumni from Ohio State, Belmont, Chapman, Oklahoma State, and many others have stepped up to provide direct scholarship support to undergraduate students with more than 100 scholarships, many of them brand new.

A growing list of chapters have stepped up to create permanently endowed Cornerstone Funds which provide direct educational support to chapters year after year, reducing the amount chapters must pay on their own to send members to the outstanding Phi Tau leadership programs throughout the year. But many of our chapters still do not have fully funded Cornerstone Funds and we welcome the opportunity to work with alumni from any chapter to develop a plan to fund one. There’s no better way to put the words of our Creed to “keep strong” those ties to “ever retain the spirit of youth” into action than to make a gift to the Foundation in support of your chapter. It’s as easy as clicking on our giving portal at phikappatau.org/give and selecting your chapter from the chapter giving options. And we welcome conversations about all the ways you can provide a lasting legacy to your chapter. We’re ready to help.

At the 64th National Convention last July, Phi Kappa Tau formally established a new volunteer role; the National SeriousFun Advisor. Championed by National President Dale Holland, Kent State ’87, the SeriousFun Advisor role is meant to establish an ongoing national volunteer position to push and develop SeriousFun initiatives within the Fraternity.

T

he first person to hold the new National SeriousFun Advisor position is Mike Rosser, Colorado State ’61. “My goal is to build a campaign that will energize undergraduate members and alumni to volunteer at the camps as well as financially support Paul Newman’s legacy,” Mike said.

[20] THE LAUREL || DECEMBER 2021

One of Mike’s primary goals is to develop the relationship between undergraduates and SeriousFun by getting them more involved. “For undergraduate purposes, it’s a great opportunity to work with a good organization and get medical exposure,” Mike said. “My wife – she’s a doctor – she’s looked at so many intern applications over the years. Working at SeriousFun always catches her eye.” The myriad of opportunities SeriousFun offers is a serious consideration in why undergraduates should apply to volunteer. “You learn exposure on the ground of the challenges people have,” Mike explained. “It’s beneficial for so many careers – premed, any biological science, psychology, psychiatry, you name it.” But SeriousFun is much more than a career opportunity. For Mike, it’s something he would have directly benefited from as a boy. “I was born with a congenital club foot,” he shared. “The camps I went to in the late 40s and early 50s were not accommodating to someone with a handicap. I had a good experience, but I personally know and understand the benefits of a program like SeriousFun.” Mike took a trip to his nearest camp earlier this year – Roundup River Ranch in Gypsum, CO. “Roundup River Ranch really blew me away the first time I went,” Mike shared. “It’s a remarkable program and the people that

work there are great. They’re helpful, engaged, and enthusiastic. It’s a remarkable program to be involved with.” The long-term benefit is how SeriousFun pushes challenges kids and builds their confidence. “Every time you fail and go after it again is a lesson. Pretty soon, you know how to conquer that challenge,” Mike said. “Those things build on themselves.” “I am overwhelmed by the depth and the breadth of the organization and what they do for children with various illnesses and physical handicaps,” Mike said of SeriousFun. Mike is so moved by the work that SeriousFun does that he and his wife have endowed a scholarship. This scholarship supports a graduate or undergraduate brother who chooses to volunteer at a camp. “I want to use this opportunity to generate participation in our national philanthropy and reaffirm our cardinal principle of service,” he said. Mike wants to highlight a lifelong commitment not just to Phi Tau, but to SeriousFun as well. “It’s our commitment as part of our national philanthropy,” he said. “These camps need people, even if it’s washing dishes. It’s a great opportunity to get out and help. We can help both our young men and the children at SeriousFun.”

WAYS TO GIVE

WAYS TO GIVE ONLINE An online gift is a quick and secure way to contribution to the Foundation. By visiting phikappatau.org/give, you can make a one-time gift or establish a reoccurring monthly gift. Through our online portal, you can give directly to your chapter, to our unrestricted Brotherhood fund, to scholarships, and much more. MAIL You can mail a check or credit card gift to the Foundation. Send all correspondence to Phi Kappa Tau Foundation, Ewing T. Boles Executive Offices, 5221 Morning Sun Road, Oxford Ohio 45056. PHONE Call (800)-PKT-1906 ext. 272 and ask to speak to a member of the Foundation staff. AUTOMATIC FUND TRANSFERS Regular automatic monthly bank or credit card drafts make giving to the Foundation more convenient to meet your philanthropic goals. APPRECIATED STOCK/SECURITIES Gifts of stock or appreciated securities offer a cash alternative to giving with great tax benefits to the donor. Please contact the Foundation office at (800) PKT-1906 for specific instructions on how to transfer a stock gift. CORPORATE MATCHING GIFTS Many companies match their employee’s personal charitable contributions. Ask your employer if your company participate in a matching gift program and make the Foundation your non-profit of choice.

PLANNED GIFTS The Foundation will work with you and your estate planner to design a planned gift that meets your short-term and long-term financial goals. Planned gifts include, but are not limited to, cash, bonds, stock securities, personal properties, retirement plan assets, and insurance policies. LIFE INSURANCE The gift of life insurance can make a remarkable difference for a relatively small dollar investment in premium payments by you during your lifetime. You can name the Foundation as owner of a policy and, as such, the premiums you pay will qualify as a tax-deductible gift. Or, you can name the Foundation as the beneficiary on an existing policy. Benefits paid form such policies not only generate a substantial gift to the Foundation, but are not taxable as part of your estate. IRA ROLLOVER The Chairitable IRA Rollover allows individuals over the age of 70½ or older to make direct transfers of up to $100,000 per year from individual retirement accounts to qualified charities without having

to count the transfers as income for federal tax purposes. Since no tax is incurred on the withdraw, gifts do not qualify for a chairtable deducation but may be counted towards an individual’s minimum required distribution. PLEDGED GIFTS If you do not have the cash or assets to make an outright gift to the Foundation, you can sign a pledge. This agreement allows you to make a philanthropic commitment to the Foundation and pay the gift over a certain period of time. Foundation policy states that pledges must be more than $5,000 and for no more than five years.

The Phi Kappa Tau Foundation is exempt from federal income tax under section 501C3 of the Internal Revenue Code. Contributions to the Foundation are deductible under section 170 of the code. The Foundation acknowledges that donors will not receive goods or services in exchange for donations. This is not intended to be legal or financial advice. Please consult your attorney or financial advisor.

LEADERSHIP MESSAGE

THANK YOU!

T

his fall has provided an opportunity for our Executive Office team members to return to travel (albeit, with some limitations), and once again be with members and guests during in-person activity across the organization. That has been refreshing, to say the least. Whether for a Chapter Centennial celebration (Coe College & University of Kentucky), or a re-chartering (Eastern Kentucky, Georgia Tech and Delaware), or the emergence of a new associate chapter (Miami University); each experience brings together people who have longed for the opportunity to share fellowship through face-to-face interaction. A major theme at each of these events has been the acknowledgement of brothers who have given generously to help each of those chapters persevere through the pandemic. Rightfully so. And that is exactly what we hope to do for each of you, our loyal donors, by the publishing of

this Annual Report. Without your support and generosity, our Fraternity and the member experience would have suffered beyond the scope of the pandemic. We have emerged at a point of growth despite the uncertainty we faced 18 months ago. Our new leadership team on the Foundation (you heard from Buzz and Warren in this piece) are poised to challenge our Foundation to do more for the member experience. The addition of four new trustees brings energy to our team as well as talents for positive impact. Our aim, as always, will be to retain your trust as good stewards of the resources within our care while we drive toward future successes. Let me again say, thank you for your continued support! Fraternally,
