2024-2025 Phi Kappa Tau Foundation Annual Report

Page 1

2024-2025

Dear Phi Tau Brothers and Friends:

As I enter my third year at the Foundation, I find myself overwhelmed with pride and love. Just over a year ago I was initiated as a Phi Tau. The experience was profound, but it made me feel especially emotional. My wife had been diagnosed with cancer just 10 days before (she is doing great!). But suddenly I had thousands of Brothers showing me love and support. I am so incredibly grateful.

I am also grateful for the opportunity to work beside Alex Haller and Charlie Ball. We are Brothers sharing the success of the strategic foundation program we have constructed to make the Foundation the Philanthropic home of Phi Kappa Tau.

None of this would ever be successful without the amazing Trustees who serve on our Board. In my 35-year career, this is by far the most committed, enthusiastic, and capable board I have had the honor to work with and for.

I have met over 200 Phi Tau Brothers individually in my first two years, creating warm and trusting relationships. These relationships have facilitated a continued robust growth in gifts to the Foundation supporting our leadership education programs, the Phi Tau chapters across the country, and a myriad of compelling needs from scholarships to support of the Fraternity’s national philanthropy SeriousFun!

We will be partnering with three chapters starting this year in housing campaigns. This effort will be a significant component of our strategic program at the Foundation. Your support will see our fundraising totals exceed $3 million this year, growing from $400,000 just a few years ago.

On behalf of the staff and the Trustees of the Foundation, we extend our most sincere gratitude to you as a donor. Your generosity has an influence, transforming the Foundation in an impactful way. Please take the time to look at the Annual Report for our fiscal year 2025 (year ended June 30, 2025). I hope you find your name with joy and pride!

On the Cover:

Michael Wheeler and Ryan Sullivan, both recipients of Paul A. Elfers Omega scholarships, represented Kappa Chapter (University of Kentucky) to accept the Roland Maxwell Outstanding Chapter Award at last summer’s National Convention in Orlando. Michael is a triple major in Finance, Management, and Economics, and Ryan is majoring in Accounting and Finance with a Psychology minor. Both have been SeriousFun camp volunteers.

Sincerely,

Scholarship Support to Deserving Students

The cost of tuition and fees continues to rise at the public and private colleges and universities where Phi Kappa Tau chapters are located. Thanks to generous donors and sound investments, the Phi Kappa Tau Foundation’s scholarship awards to individuals has doubled in the past five years with total scholarship support to students topping $100,000 per year for the first time.

Three new scholarship funds and major additions to another will push payouts even higher in the coming fiscal year. Notable gifts to create scholarships include:

Delta Psi Legacy Fund

Alumni of Delta Psi Chapter at Rider University have gifted remaining assets from their now-closed chapter to fund a new fund which is making its first payouts in Fiscal 2026. The new permanent endowment will support students and chapters in perpetuity as a lasting legacy of the Delta Psi Chapter.

David and Marilyn Ruckman Scholarship Fund

Macak Family Leadership Fund

This new endowed fund will provide support to Phi Taus pursuing graduate and professional studies. While most of our endowed funds support undergraduate students, this new fund which honors the late David Ruckman (Ohio State 1962) and his wife Marilyn will assist students who wish to further their education in graduate or professional schools. This new scholarship will awarded for the first time in 2026.

Another new scholarship for 2026 will be the Macak Family Leadership scholarship. Funded by past national president Bill Macak (Florida State 1973) and other Florida State Phi Tau members of the Macak family Michael (1972), Andy (2003) and Jon (2007). This new undergraduate scholarship will support students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership traits.

Bacon-Hlivak Scholarship Fund

Foundation trustee Jim Bacon (Michigan Tech 1959) has made significant additional contributions to the fund he created to support Gamma Alpha Chapter. The first chapter specific scholarship to exceed $1-million in endowment provides over $40,000 per year to deserving Gamma Alpha members. This scholarship is also a family effort with the involvement three generations of Jim’s family including a son, Jim Bacon (1981) and grandson Nick Hlivak (2010).

By e NUMBERS

Gifts of Leadership

Learning the skills of leadership is fundamental to the Phi Kappa Tau experience. The Fraternity has no more important obligation than to help prepare the next generation of our country’s leaders.

The Foundation has committed over $800,000 to leadership training and educational programming in the last three fiscal years. These grants have been funded with annual contributions from alumni and friends and through a significant bequest from the estate of Kathleen Dole-Airoldi, widow of the late Alan Airoldi (UC Berkeley 1957).

Other generous donors are helping to provide a permanent source of income to fund important initiatives like the Zenith Officers Institute, the Leadership Academy and Regional Conferences.

Three new or expanded endowed funds are beginning to provide that income.

David and Marilyn Ruckman Fund

Longtime Foundation board chair David Ruckman (Ohio State 1962) knew what it meant o be a leader— in his distinguished professional life at Merrill Lynch, in the Cleveland, Ohio community where he lived, and in Phi Kappa Tau. Dave had been generous with his time and his money, supporting the Foundation in various ways over the years. At his death in July 2024, a number of his friends and fellow Foundation trustees endowed a permanent fund in his memory to support educational programming. Recently, Dave’s wife Marilyn has committed an additional $1-million to the fund which will make the Ruckman Fund the largest of its type in the Foundation and annual grants will be a lasting legacy to Dave’s leadership.

Raymond A. Bichimer Memorial Fund

The family of past national president Ray Bichimer (Ohio State 1954) including Ray’s wife Nancy and his son Mike (Miami 1981) made major additions to the memorial fund in Ray’s name and focused the endowment fund’s purpose on supporting educational programming. As a facilitator of the treasurer’s track of the Zenith Officer Institute, Mike Bichimer, who is also a trustee of the Foundation has seen first-hand the importance of programs like Zenith and the Bichimer Fund will be a permanent source of support for this kind of programming.

McCrum Family Brotherhood Fund

Past National President Mike McCrum (Texas State 1976) and his wife, Ana, have created a new endowed fund with a gift of $25,000. The new McCrum Family Brotherhood Fund will support annual educational programming of the national fraternity. An important and required element of the fund is that each recipient program must emphasize and teach the “moral and ethical principles of brotherhood, fellowship and mutual support”. In establishing the fund, McCrum emphasized that “This is not a gift. We consider it an investment in the future of our Fraternity.” Throughout his presidency, McCrum emphasized the importance of brotherhood as the fundamental principle of Phi Kappa Tau.

Heritage Society

The Phi Kappa Tau Heritage Society was established to recognize alumni and friends who have made provisions for future generations of brothers though a will, trust, retirement plan, life insurance and/or other planned gifts. The Heritage Society members are sorted alphabetically by last name. If we’ve inadvertently missed your name or if you’d like to join the Heritage Society, please contact Charlie Ball at cball@phikappatau.org.

Kees Woudenberg,

Heritage Society Makes Lasting Impact

The Brothers and friends of Phi Kappa Tau who join our Heritage Society by making a provision for the Foundation in their estate plans continue to make a lasting impact.

One such significant gift came from John A. Johnson (Mississippi State 1964). A longtime volunteer who had served as a domain director and an elected member of the Fraternity’s national Council had been a member of the Heritage Society since 2018. Following his death at the age of 80 in April 2025, the Foundation received a bequest from his family trust of $500,000. Half of the bequest was designated for the benefit of Alpha Chi Chapter at Mississippi State and will be used for the educational portion of a new chapter house being constructed there. The other half of John’s bequest was unrestricted—to be used for the benefit of our entire brotherhood and the educational and leadership programming that moves us forward.

Notable new planned giving commitments were received from two Foundation Trustees. Tim Collins (Transylvania 1978), chair of the Foundation’s advancement committee and John (Bethany 1978) and Betsy Orndoff-Sayers for their new planned gift commitments at the Fraternity’s National Convention in Orlando. These new members of the Heritage Society join the ever-growing list of donors who make gifts from wills, trusts, insurance policy retirement plan beneficiary designations.

Enhancing Quality Housing

In many chapters, housing is an integral part of the Phi Kappa Tau experience. The chapter house is the center of the living-learning experience of fraternity life and it is essential that those facilities are safe, comfortable and competitive with other campus housing options and provides an environment conducive to a member’s education.

The Foundation has made major strides in it efforts to help chapters improve the quality and competitiveness of their housing. In a successful pilot program with Alpha Eta Chapter at the University of Florida, Foundation staff developed a Memorandum of Understanding with local volunteers to complete the final phases of a capital campaign to renovate the Alpha Eta Chapter house in advance of the chapter Centennial celebration in 2026. Foundation staff has helped to raise funds, handle all back office responsibilities of reporting and of accepting and acknowledging gifts and pledges.

Chapter Support Fund

Because tax deductible gifts to the Foundation may only be used for educational portions of a chapter house project, the trustees of the Foundation supported the creation of a new entity called the Chapter Support Fund to accept non-deductible contributions that may be used for any portion of a chapter’s housing, without the restriction for educational purposes. The CSF was piloted with the Alpha Eta campaign and is now available to any donor who wants to support a chapter directly and does not need a tax deduction.

A number of other chapter house campaigns are underway with Foundation support.

Boles Society

The backbone of our annual campaign is the Ewing T. Boles Society. Those generous donors who give $1,000 or more-often much, much more-account for the majority of all giving to the Foundation. And we simply cannot support the educational initiatives of the Fraternity, fund educational scholarships and support our individual chapters without their generosity. Last year, our Boles 1000 initiative resulted in a record for the number of Boles-level donors. Below is a list of the Boles Society Members for the fiscal year 2024-2025, and through their support, Phi Kappa Tau will continue to thrive long into the future. The journey to 1000 Boles Members is well underway, and we will continue to inch closer to that goal with each passing year!
