ERIN HAYNES HONORED AT GENERAL CONVENTION SAMUEL V. STONE AWARD AS OUTSTANDING CHAPTER ADVISOR OF THE YEAR The Samuel V. Stone Outstanding Chapter Advisory Board Chairman of the Year Award was presented to the Fraternity in recognition of the services rendered by a longtime advisor of the Texas Gamma Chapter at Erin Haynes awarded Samuel V. Stone Award at the Biennial General Convention in San Antonio, Texas

ver this past summer a complete renovation for the second and third floor study rooms commenced. Each room now features a new steel wardrobe, concert desk, and new carpet flooring. These rooms are built to last: no more dry wall.

We are using exterior T11 siding, a steel door, and frame for each room. There are several different room color designs that help to give each room a unique look. Also upgraded this summer was the electoral system, wired internet with new switches, second and third floor hallways, a new 90% effect hydronic boiler system, new rubber flooring in all of the sleeping porches, a ADA accessible ramp in the back lot along with new ADA walkway from Monroe Street to the back lot, and north head shower repair.

n order to complete phase two, we finished both exterior work and the interior work for the second and third floors. But there is still more to do. Due to the rise in construction costs since we initially started the fundraising efforts for this building process, we have already spent $1.4 million. We still have a lot to do on the first floor and in the basement. To complete the work this summer, the KSN Board had to take out a bank loan. Now, to date, we have raised $1.16 million.

Our goal was always to raise $1.5 million—let’s hit it! If we are able to achieve our goal, then we can finish all the work downstairs and with the bank loan we will be all set with funds.

We want to thank everyone who has given so far. Even still, that is less than 15% of our living alumni who have contributed. We are

making a final ask, please give what you can, every dollar helps. You can donate over a five-year period, so could you give what amounts to $17 per month? If everyone could do that for the five-year period, then we would easily hit this goal. Brothers enjoying the 2018 Oregon Beta Cup Golf Tournament

Langdon Farms Golf Club in Canby, Oregon. We had Phis from the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, and early to mid-2000s in attendance. We even had two teams made up of active members of the chapter.

This year Charlie Holdman 1675 won the long drive on hole three and Chris Munson 1630 won the long drive on hole eighteen. Chris Steele 1302 won the closest to the pin on hole three and Dominic Biggi 1286 won the closest to the pin on hole thirteen. And the winning team of the 2018 Oregon Beta Cup is James Young 1212, Doug Bogen 1260, Kevin Lachenmeier 1443, and Scott O’Neill 1465 with a score of fourteen under.

We hope you will come next year. If you don’t golf, that’s no problem, just come for the dinner. Next year’s Oregon Beta Cup will be held on September 6, 2019 at Langdon Farms.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER: continued from page 1 the chapter has received from its alumni base, in addition to maintaining the chapter facilities for comparable student housing for all first-year students. To date, Phi Delta Theta at Oregon State is one of the few chapters with an approved affiliated housing program for the upcoming decade, in addition to taking significant steps to improve the desirability and character of the physical plant.

After wrapping up another successful summer campaign, the brothers were confident and motivated for fall recruitment in which we signed 26 new men. In addition to a successful summer recruitment, the chapter was awarded six times at the Biennial General Convention. Along with many great recognitions and nominations, Oregon Beta Chapter Advisor Erin Haynes was awarded the Samuel V. Stone Chapter Advisor of the Year award in recognition of his continuous service and commitment to the chapter. This recognition is something the chapter is extremely proud of and is beyond excited to celebrate.

The chapter has also recently added three new initiates into the brotherhood and with that, extending the list of signatures in the Oregon Beta bond to its 1894th initiated member. Throughout the upcoming term, the chapter is looking to continue to raise the retention rate among our upcoming Phikeia class and continue to transmit the Fraternity greater than it was transmitted to us. This goes hand in hand with several philanthropic and service goals that the chapter has set for itself early in this academic year. For the upcoming philanthropy campaign, the brothers are looking

to double the amount raised from our own events, while maintaining our success in the philanthropic events hosted by other student organizations on campus. The chapter is planning the primary philanthropic event for November 9, 2018 with the likely destination being at the Oregon Beta Chapter House.

To conclude, the chapter would like to express an extreme gratitude towards our Kappa Sigma Nu brothers. The commitment that has been demonstrated throughout the past few years regarding both the centennial and the remodel has served as a demonstration to the undergraduate brothers that this place is truly unlike any other experience on campus and that the relationships that are formed here are certainly lifelong. Serving this organization throughout the past year has been both an honor and a privilege and you, our strong alumni, continue to humble me.

ERIN HAYNES: continued from page 1 Southwestern University. Its purpose is to show appreciation for all Chapter Advisory Board Chairmen and annually recognizes an outstanding advisor within the Fraternity.

This year’s winner of the Samuel V. Stone Award, Erin Haynes 966 of Oregon Beta at Oregon State University, received 18 letters of support. Within these letters, it is easy to see the joy on the page when reading what others have to say about him.

“To say that this award is long overdue would be an understatement,” according to Leslie Schact Drey, assistant dean of students at Oregon State University.

Brother Haynes’ passion for fraternity is impressive and apparent as soon as you meet him. He has served as Chapter Advisory Board Chairman since 1975 and has also served as the Pi South Province President.

Erin was instrumental in organizing a fraternity-wide project with the local men’s shelter that helped Oregon Beta align their mission with Phi Delt values.

From his time at Oregon State, to his time of retirement, and even now, Brother Haynes has embodied what it truly means to be a servant leader. Described as a father-figure to members, the glue between generations, and “a walking Phi Delt encyclopedia,” Erin is also a member of the OSU Alumni Club and a cornerstone member of the local Rotary Club since the 1980s. Along with these personal attributes, he helped the Housing Corporation raise over $1.2 million dollars to renovate the Oregon Beta Chapter House. This year, Brother Haynes received the inaugural Erin Haynes Lifetime Achievement Award from the chapter.

“It is with great joy that Phi Delta Theta recognizes Erin Haynes of Oregon Beta as this year’s Samuel V. Stone Award winner,” the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity Awards Committee remarked.

ALUMNI UPDATES The “Old Brothers” of Oregon Beta met on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at the legendary location, the Bomber Café (there is a Phi Delt connection). Ed Dey 609 is the master of ceremonies for the group and made the arrangements. There were 17 total brothers in attendance and Omega bond holder Erin Haynes 966 stood and sang “1848.” Brothers included Bud Berg 533 (1952 baseball pitcher College World Series), Tom Marineau 546, Art Oakley 555, Dick Bayless 569, Don Duman 591, Bill DeBolt 614, John Leffel 615, Fred Robertson 630, Wes Ediger 633, Gerry Exley Jr. 643, John Lampros 653, Bob Bauer 681, Dr. Bob Gill 677, plus newer initiates Louie Barker 1829, and Rod Meserve 1859, and lastly Duck PDT Jim Larpenteur (Grant High). A report was given regarding the Centennial Celebration, the Phi Delta Theta General Convention, progress on the remodel and the golf tourney in September. Don Duman 591 still thinks that Josh Cooper 1868 is a fine guy. Josh helped Don when he had a medical emergency on Centennial weekend!
