PAYING IT FORWARD

FINDING INSPIRATION IN THE GENEROSITY OF OTHERS

C

ory Hanson 1699 grew up on an acreage just north of Story City, Iowa. After being fortunate enough to spend four years at Iowa State, he moved to the Twin Cities to work for the American Cancer Society in Mendota Heights, Minnesota. After a short stint he was lured back to Ames and has spent ten years helping to advance Iowa State at both the Alumni Association and ISU Foundation.

What are some of your favorite Phi Delt memories?

Power Hour throughout four years of Dance Marathon and watching a great group of guys give selflessly of their time to support a cause they were passionate about. I have also gotten to know and work with many outstanding Phi Delts through my roles on campus after graduation. Their continued passion and generosity towards Iowa State are an inspiration.

What made you decide to join Phi Delta Theta?

Steve Good and Brad Carlson. I was unfamiliar and only a little

intrigued by Greek life. Spending time with the Fall 2002 class throughout that fall semester convinced me to pledge in Spring 2003.

What degree did you earn from Iowa State and what is your current role in the workforce today?

I graduated from the College of Business with double majors in marketing and management. I went to work for the American Cancer Society in Minneapolis before moving back to work for Iowa State. I’ve been back at Iowa State for just over 10 years in a variety of alumni and development roles. I am currently the Senior Director of Development in the College of Business where I oversee the fundraising operation for the college.

Advice to younger Phis?

Take advantage of everything Iowa State has to offer. Get outside your comfort zone, meet new people and experience things that you might not typically do.

ric Burrough 1485 grew up in Ottumwa, Iowa and received his doctor of veterinary medicine in 1997. He began practicing mixed animal veterinarian medicine before returning to ISU for graduate training and completing a PhD in veterinary pathology in 2011. He is currently an associate professor and diagnostic pathologist at the Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. His primary research focus is on enteric diseases of pigs including swine dysentery, salmonellosis, and coronavirus infections.

What are some of your favorite Phi Delt memories?

I was a VEISHEA hardcore so one of my favorite memories was driving the float in the parade. The driver’s seat was buried underneath the float, so I was driving completely blind and had to rely on my spotters who were both within and in front of the float: teamwork and brotherhood at its best.

What made you decide to join Phi Delta Theta?

My father John 972 was in the chapter so it was natural as a legacy to attend summer recruitment functions. It was immediately clear that the members of the active chapter attending were not only invested in the house but were also bonded with each other. At the time, Phi Delts were consistently one of the top academic chapters on campus which made my fraternity choice easy. I remember the day I came to accept my bid. It was summer and the house was nearly empty and yet the yard was mowed and the foyer was

immaculately clean.

I was so proud to be joining a chapter where people cared for and respected the property. This was not the norm at other houses I had visited and this certainly showed an outward sign of the pride Phi Delts had in their house and chapter.

Advice to younger Phis?

Don’t sweat the small stuff, get involved in activities outside of your field, and listen when people talk to you. It’s easy to get caught up in our own personal concerns and goals but relationships matter. Make time to keep in touch with your pledge brothers after you graduate.

A VERY SUCCESSFUL YEAR AT IOWA GAMMA

I

t has been a very exciting year for Iowa Gamma. We are beyond grateful for a beautiful new exterior to our house. This will not only give us an amazing home, but it will help recruit many more generations of Phi Delts. Thank you all for your continued support and dedication to improving Iowa Gamma!

This year we hosted the Midwest Recruitment Workshop for Phi Delta Theta. Chapters from across the Midwest sent representatives to this workshop to learn strategies to increase recruitment efficiency. We were lucky enough to send eight members consisting of mostly freshman and sophomores that will help to shape the future of our chapter. In April, we also participated in Greek Visit Day for Iowa State. We met many quality potential new members. That being said, we would love for you to send any recommendations for high school seniors interested in going Greek.

Our members worked very hard during Greek Week with our pairing, Kappa Alpha Theta and Theta Delta Chi. We took second place in tournaments and helped the Greek Community raise over $377,000 for Special Olympics Iowa. At the annual Greek Community awards ceremony, Vespers, the Iowa Gamma Chapter received the “Friendship” award. This is given to the Fraternity with the best brotherhood that exemplifies the strong bond

RECRUITMENT UPDATE

A

s your new recruitment chairmen, we are both very excited and honored to be serving the chapter this summer as we set out to recruit the next class of Phis.

Iowa Gamma takes pride in recruiting diverse new member classes as the approach allows our members to learn more from each other and have a positive influence on the Iowa State and Ames community.

We hope to recruit 30 men this summer who value academics and brotherhood, as well as the opportunity to develop personally. We recruit men who are eager to get involved on campus, in the Fraternity, as well as in the community. If you know of someone who would be a great addition to our chapter, please reach out to us.

Sam Pickett, Omaha, Nebraska, junior, majoring in geology. Phi Delta Theta has played a crucial role in my development at Iowa State. As an out-of-state student, the brothers of Iowa Gamma were my first friends coming into my freshman year and continue to be my closest ones today. I am extremely excited to start

that is formed with its members. After a great spring, we are excited to be paired with one of the newest sororities on campus, Delta Gamma, as well as Acacia and Gamma Rho Lambda for Homecoming.

We are also taking great strides with our presence on campus. Our annual philanthropy in the fall semester, Phi Delves, raised $1,400. Even though it is only in its second year, students on campus love getting cookies and hearing holiday carols while studying for finals. Our members were studying especially hard increasing our chapter GPA to 3.15 in the fall placing us seventh of 31 fraternities.

We have high hopes to keep increasing this in the future.

Gary Wynne, Alexis, Illinois (a rural community about an hour south of Davenport, Iowa), junior this fall double-majoring in agricultural business and international agriculture with a minor in Spanish. In addition to serving as Iowa Gamma’s recruitment chairman, I am Iowa State Dance Marathon’s Executive General Co-Director, an ambassador for the Student Alumni Leadership Council, and a previous member and sophomore advisor for the President’s Leadership Class. I look forward to meeting with potential new members this summer and sharing why Iowa Gamma is second to none.

Think beyond yourself. Find a cause that is important to you and embrace it. For me it was easy to get caught up in the day to day and forget that the world doesn’t revolve around Ames (or me). Be a role model, mentor and remember that people look up to you.

Remember that many of the experiences you have at Iowa State were made possible by those that walked in your footsteps years ago. Don’t take this for granted and instead make a commitment to pay it forward. Philanthropy touches every corner of campus. Budgets are tight for you but there will come a time when you too have the ability to give back.

2017 DANCE MARATHON A HUGE SUCCESS $293,000 Raised Dance Marathon is a non-profit organization supported through the Children’s Miracle Network that raises funds and awareness for children fighting life-threatening illnesses. Iowa State Dance Marathon, specifically, is the largest and most successful student-run philanthropic organization on campus.

The main event is held in January each year in the Phi Delts at Dance Marathon taking a dance break to pose for a picture with House Mom, Great Hall of the Memorial Corinne Gilbert Union. Participants, typically known as “dancers,” stand on their feet for 15 hours to symbolize their support for the miracle children and families. Although the main event is in January, there are many other events throughout the year for children, families, and dancers to attend.

All money raised by Iowa State Dance Marathon goes directly to the Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City and the miracle children receiving treatment there.

Iowa State Dance Marathon holds a special place in the hearts of Iowa State Phi Delts. Phi Delta Theta brought the organization to campus 21 years ago and has continued to take an active role in the organization ever since. A brother of Iowa Gamma has served as the executive general co-director 13 of the 21 years! This past year, Phi Delta Theta played a large role in the event’s success of raising $293,000.
