DOING SOMETHING DIFFERENT

VALUABLE SKILLS LEARNED FROM PHI DELTA THETA LEADS TO CAREER CHANGE

A

fter working for the past seven years since graduation for 3m and Albaugh LLC, Ryan McCauley 1752 decided he wanted to do something different. He is now a partner at Main Street Cafe & Bakery in Ankeny, Iowa. He says it is comparable to a Panera, but on a smaller, local scale. They plan to grow the business to more locations within the next few years.

He hopes to utilize his MBA, as well as process improvement experience, to help create efficiencies and deliver quality food to their great customers in a faster process. What have you been up to since graduation?

I was lucky to marry an amazing person last June. Having the support from my wife, Brooke, to make a jump in careers has allowed me to be a happier person and feel more successful.

We have twin girls on the way due next March that we are

both looking forward to. Our lives are going to change completely, but it is a challenge we are excited for. Having such a supportive wife allows me to continue to grow both personally and professionally.

What interactions do you have with Phi Delts today?

I still talk to a handful of my pledge brothers weekly that include people in the classes both above and below me. I made a lot of great friendships in my four years at Iowa Gamma. While I may not talk to some of my brothers as often, the bond is still alive. This was extremely evident when my father passed away unexpectedly on the job as a Des Moines firefighter earlier this year. The services were held in the middle of the week, and brothers showed up from Kansas City, Minneapolis, and all over Iowa to support my family and me. It’s great to know that even as life changes for you and you lose contact with some brothers, they are still there to support you in a time of need.

How has your Phi Delta Theta experience changed who you are today?

The Fraternity taught me plenty of valuable lessons. Time management, prioritization, responsibility, and being open-minded. Balancing what seems like a hectic schedule in college is only a warm-up for life beyond graduation. You may not always be able to get everything done that you would like to, so the prioritization and delegation of tasks, if necessary, is important. After serving as recruitment chairman and treasurer, I feel as if the Fraternity helped me mature and prepare me for life after graduation. Being opened-minded has helped me time and time again after graduation. I have traveled to many places that I never thought I would, “DON’T TAKE THE made friends in different areas of the world and EASY WAY OUT. with different viewpoints.

I think that is more important now than ever with everything that has been going on in the world the last few years.

What are your thoughts of the newly renovated chapter facility?

I can’t believe how nice the house looks since I graduated in 2010. I think this is a great reflection on our alumni, the hard work that all of the actives and Phikeias are putting in, and maybe the biggest impact is how great a job Mom G [Corinne Gilbert] has does. She has helped our Fraternity go from acceptable to great at Iowa State once again! When I was in school we were a good fraternity with a good group of core guys, but we had our struggles from 2006–2010. I think the membership numbers and status of the Fraternity currently show how successful we have been in the last seven years!

What is your favorite Iowa Gamma memory?

Winning Yell Like Hell during my freshman year was pretty great.

Homecoming was always my favorite time of the year with lawn display and all of the other activities going on.

What advice do you have for current members?

Don’t fail to sign up for organizations outside the Fraternity. It’s important to put effort into the Fraternity, but it is also important to get involved outside of the Fraternity. Make sure you are enjoying your college years. Try to give back where you can.

Focus on doing something that makes you happy. If that means choosing a major or program that you enjoy and may not make quite as much money, I personally feel it is worth it in the long run, as going to a job for 40–50 hours a week that you do not enjoy will only wear on you and make you unhappy. Sometimes life can be cut short and be unfair as I have experienced this year, so don’t take for granted the time you have. Don’t take the easy way out. I can tell you as a recruiter and hiring manager for 3m and Albaugh that employers are not looking for people who took the easiest possible schedules. Find ways to make yourself more valuable than your competitors. Be open to continually learning.

I originally thought I would get my degree and I was going to be set. If you want to be successful, continue to learn and educate yourself whether that means more schooling, classes online, finding mentors, or reading valuable books. Try to leave the Fraternity in a better place than it was when you joined!

Thank you to all alumni that showed up to the Iowa Gamma Alumni tailgate. We had a great turnout for the event and were able to watch Iowa State defeat #4 TCU! At our tailgate, even the newly appointed Iowa State University president, Wendy Wintersteen, stopped by to say hello.

UNDERGRADUATE SPOTLIGHT SENIOR PHI COMPETES IN A NATIONAL FISHING CHAMPIONSHIP Pat Morrison 1894 qualified for and competed in the 2017 YETI Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) College Fishing National Championship on Wheeler Lake in Rogersville, Alabama in June.

During this two-day event, Pat and his partner Dylan managed to weigh-in 20 lb. and 14 oz. of bass. This impressive haul resulted in a 20th place finish out of 138 other collegiate teams. Pat is a current

member (as well as past president) of the ISU Fishing Club where he regularly competes in weekend tournaments across the country.

IRON PHI INSPIRED BY GREAT-GRANDFATHER of Phi Delta Theta (both undergraduates and alumni) must select an athletic endeavor of their choice, raise $1,000 through Phi Delta Theta’s Iron Phi website, and then accomplish their athletic event.

With the help of friends, family, and alumni, Nathan raised $1,965 for ALS research. Becoming an Iron Phi has been a long-standing goal for Nathan as his great-grandfather passed away from Lou Gehrig’s Disease in 2005. Phi Delta Theta’s connection to ALS and their philanthropic work were some of the reasons he was drawn to the Fraternity during first semester at Iowa State.

Nathan Pattee 1882 from Avoca, Iowa became an Iron Phi last summer, joining a select brotherhood of Iowa Gamma Phis who have completed this challenge. To become an Iron Phi, members

Nathan completed the athletic portion of his Iron Phi Challenge by hiking the tallest mountain in Rocky Mountain National Park, Longs Peak. The hike was over 15 miles long, reached 14,259 feet in elevation, and is widely regarded as one of the most difficult “14’ers” in Colorado. When asked about his experience, Nathan said, “It was without a doubt the greatest physical challenge I have ever completed, but the experience of the Iron Phi Challenge is overwhelmingly worth it and something I’ll never forget.”
