ALUMNUS SPOTLIGHT COLLEGE OFFERS A DIVERSITY OF OPPORTUNITY THAT CAN INFLUENCE YOUR POST-GRAD LIFE

orn and raised in Ames, Kyle Schilling 1655 was a hometown kid when he attended Iowa State. He met his wife through VEISHEA and they married in 2009. After graduation, he moved to Milwaukee for work and then transferred to Tennessee, and has now lived south of Nashville for thirteen years. When he and his wife aren’t living life with their two amazing and joyful children they help run Music City Trykes, which serves as the Middle Tennessee Chapter of the national service organization, AMBUCS (a membership organization dedicated to helping people with disabilities). The primary purpose of Music City Trykes is to raise funds for, provide, and fit the AmTryke® therapeutic trike to children and others who are otherwise unable to ride a regular bike. Through their chapter, they provide highly discounted pricing on typically expensive adaptive, therapeutic tricycles. Learn more by visiting www.musiccitytrykes.org. What are some of your favorite Phi Delt memories? One of my favorite memories is the Phi Delt Tuck-ins. While not the most lucrative effort, it often was the most entertaining. Most memorable: seeing brother Andy Tu impersonate Enrique Inglesias (complete with mole) for his rendition of “Hero.” I also fondly remember Varieties performances as a member of the “Kiss” supporting band. However, general impromptu get-togethers—to watch movies, basketball at the Rec, random grocery runs, etc.—that’s really what made Phi Delta Theta fun. Every student has homework, goes to class, takes tests, but it’s the social events and those involved that differentiate your college experience. Phi Delts excelled at those events and experiences. What made you decide to join Phi Delta Theta? I joined as a sophomore, so I had time to look around and get a feel both for the campus and reputations of each fraternity. Some were known as the “study” house, or the “agricultural” house, the “engineering” house. Phi Delt didn’t fit just one description, and I love that. No one could describe Phi Delts with a simple description, but “fun” was always mentioned. I knew I’d be exposed to and meet a variety of brothers who would challenge me in my short time at ISU. I do recall one moment on a recruiting trip, around a campfire, the brothers had a truly thoughtful and

deep discussion, and I thought that was surprising and refreshing. Phi Delta Theta was founded, after all, as a place where gentleman could gather and debate. What degree did you earn from Iowa State and what is your current role in the workforce today? I always loved math, so I majored in engineering and kind of stumbled into mechanical engineering mainly due to its breadth. As an engineer I now manage capital projects for General Mills, most recently at a Yoplait yogurt plant in Tennessee. I’ve also spent time in maintenance and operations supervision. Chances are, if you’ve seen a new Yoplait product on the shelf in the last last five years, I was responsible for taking it from an R&D lab, through commercialization at the plant, and out to those stores. Advice to younger Phis? Enjoy college. I know, you hear this all the time. But truly, you will never again have the combination of Continued on next page

freedom, friendship, and exploration as you do in college. Dig deeply into what aspects of your classes you enjoy and tailor your career around those, rather than what you want to do. Once you leave college, you will basically be doing the same thing every day for the rest of your adult life. College is the best chance you will ever have to explore various hobbies, so try new things. A large public university has more opportunities than you will ever realize. How did your Phi Delta Theta experience shape who you are today? The most significant way that Phi Delta Theta shaped me was to prepare me for the diversity of people I interact with across the world, both at work and in my personal life. Live that close with so many people, you learn what makes people tick, what motivates, and even what angers them. It provided me with experiences to learn how to connect with almost anyone.

What are the biggest changes you are seeing at Iowa State or within Phi Delta Theta? The largest change I see is the tremendous population growth in both Ames and ISU. ISU has always been a large university that could be as small as you wanted to make it. In the coming decade, ISU, its organizations, and most importantly, its students, will struggle finding a personal experience while accommodating a 36,000 (and growing) student population. What are your interactions (if any) with Phi Delts today? I keep in touch with a handful of Phi Delts, primarily pledge class members. Living in Tennessee, I’m not geographically close with many Phi Delts, but social media is a great way to keep in touch with many brothers. It’s awesome to see the impact that our brothers have on this world in the workforce, with their families, and through philanthropy. Kyle lives near Nashville, Tennessee with his wife, Ashley, and two children. You can contact him at kylebschilling@hotmail.com.

Homecoming this year was a huge success! We had large attendance for the annual blood drive, Blue Sky 4K run, and all of the Homecoming events/sports. We were paired with Alpha Phi and Pi Kappa Phi, two chapters we are now proud to call close friends. Our pairing placed first overall in volleyball, fourth in treds (a game of ultimate frisbee but using a football), and fourth in lawn display. Our Yell Like Hell group had a great effort on the stage this year, but we were not selected to move on to the final round.

PHILANTHROPY Earlier this year, Phi Delta Theta International Fraternity took a significant step to broaden its reach and deepen its impact on the fight against Lou Gehrig’s Disease. This was done by launching The LiveLikeLou Foundation, a stand-alone 501(c) (3) nonprofit entity to support the families of ALS patients and actively fund research to find a cure. To support this cause on a local level, Iowa Gamma hosted its inaugural Phi Delt Funnel Cakes philanthropy where we served funnel cake fries and homemade lemonade for $5. In our first year alone we had over 350 attendees and raised over $2,600. This event was the first time our chapter had hosted a philanthropy event at 2035 Sunset Drive, and it was great to see it turn out so successful! Needless to say, it has left our chapter excited to host this event in the future. Iowa Gamma

or the past semester the men of Iowa Gamma have stayed grounded in the three Cardinal Principles of our organization—Friendship, Sound Learning, and Rectitude. Whether we display these within the walls of our chapter house, on campus, or around the world, our members will always be rooted in Phi Delta Theta. As we arrived back to school this fall, our chapter was greeted with a twenty-five-person Phikeia class. This group comes from all over the country and features a diverse group of majors. It is also always exciting to see a large group of legacy members join like we saw this semester. We are confident this group will carry on the proud tradition of Iowa Gamma and continue to make strides in on-campus organizations as well as within the greater Ames community. This semester our executive team made it a priority to revamp our existing Phikeia education program in order to better help our new members grow into the greatest versions of themselves. Our updated programming features more tangible leadership opportunities, as well as places a higher emphasis on career development and the importance of mental health. These efforts were led by our Phikeia educator, Collin Coffey 1910, as well as the entire executive team. With these changes, we believe that our new members will be better prepared to succeed here at

Iowa State and after graduation. Speaking of mental health, our chapter as a whole has placed major emphasis on this matter. We recently created a new position, the mental health chairman, in order to raise awareness and lead our members to a higher level of well-being. We believe that every member deserves to feel at his best, and we are committed to helping to do that as a chapter.
