Phi Delta Theta Foundation 2022 Impact Report 2 |

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

am humbled to be able to provide you with this report on the progress the Phi Delta Theta Foundation made in 2022. As we entered December, we were thrilled to announce that for the first time in the Foundation’s history, we awarded $1 million in educational grants and scholarships to advance the education of our members. I feel incredibly grateful to be able to write to you, a loyal donor of Phi Delta Theta, about the lives you’ve changed over the past year. Our team did a research project in anticipation of the 175th anniversary. In doing so, we learned that in the 1960s, the first Foundation Board had the hopes that someday, the Phi Delta Theta Foundation would be able to award two Phis a $1,000 scholarship annually.

Twenty years after the Foundation Board established that goal and was flourishing, the Board successfully petitioned the IRS to be allowed to grant scholarships and use funds raised to grant monies for educational programming. At that time, the goal was to support the Fraternity for the Chapter Consultant Program.

Thanks to your commitment to transferring this Fraternity greater to those who may follow, we have accomplished these missions and multiplied them beyond what they believed imaginable. In 2022, we granted $593,000 in scholarships, and our educational programming has grown from simply supporting the Chapter Consultant program to $473,000 in support for the annual Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute, Shaffer Honors College of Leadership, Ihlenfeld Online University, McKenzie Family Presidents Leadership Conference, and many other programs!

As you read through the following pages, ensure to read the stories of our students and know that you are the reason our brothers are exceeding their potential, and improving their personal trajectories. You are truly changing lives.

Gratefully, Yours in the Bond,

PHIDELTA THETA

LIVING BOND SOCIETY

The Living Bond Society honors Phis and friends who have informed the Phi Delta Theta Foundation of a legacy commitment via one of the following planned giving vehicles:

• Wills and Living Trusts

• Beneficiary Designations

• Charitable Gift Annuities

• Charitable Remainder Trust

• Charitable Lead Trusts

• Real Estate

• Donor-Advised Funds

Knowing where to start when it comes to legacy giving is often confusing. Visit the Foundation’s Planned Giving web page at https://phide.lt/planned_giving to help guide you on the path to securing a future for your family and Phi Delta Theta.

If you have any questions or prefer to chat with someone about the options, contact Andrew Cole, CFRE. Andrew can review the various options with you and help develop a proposal to take to a planned giving advisor. Contact Andrew at 513.523.6966 ext. 236 or acole@phideltatheta.org.

Since the Living Bond Society was launched, 252 donors have joined, including eight new brothers in 2022!

Add your name 2023.

GRADUATES OF THE LAST DECADE

We are pleased to recognize this special group of donors starting out in their professional careers and making a habit of supporting the Phi Delta Theta Foundation. Thank you for your early support of Phi Delta Theta. We hope to include your name in our annual impact report for years to come.

In 2022, 118 Phis who have graduated since 2013 donated: that’s 6 percent of the Foundation’s overall donor base!

One of the most important things I learned while at Kleberg is what goes into being a successful leader in Phi Delta Theta and on campus: accountability, integrity, and empathy are all topics essential to managing and guiding a diverse group of young men. After looking back, I recommend any Phi to take on the challenge and attend a conference because of what I learned and how it has influenced me to be a leader and someone who can bring value to any situation they are placed in.”

What I learned from Kleberg is the scale that this Fraternity is on. I have become best of friends with people from all over the country, and it is inspiring to see all of us united under the same principles of this Fraternity. I wake up daily thankful for what Kleberg and Phi Delta Theta have given me as I continue my college career.”

One of my favorite parts of the Shaffer Honors College of Leadership was meeting many like-minded individuals from around the country who focused on crafting their leadership skills just like me. The connections I made allowed me to understand how other leaders operate, which was incredibly valuable. My most important takeaway from the conference was learning the importance of leading by example. In other words, gaining respect and notoriety from others through your actions and not simply your words. The program was extremely beneficial and an experience I will continue to use to influence my leadership for my entire life.”

I attended Shaffer Honors College of Leadership, where I learned how to lead as a fraternity man and truly take those skills and implement them in the real world—that weekend taught me that there is a lot more to leadership than telling someone what to do. As a leader, it is your job to learn and develop as an individual; the best leaders are the best followers. To truly command respect and admiration, you must understand that everyone is your equal, and they all have something to give and to learn from. Take no information or teaching for granted. I learned that to be a truly good leader, sometimes you need to take the back seat. You must be able to delegate and learn from others. If you are the one always doing everything and not accepting other people’s ideas, you are not opening yourself to learning and truly leading. To be a good leader, you first must be a good follower.”

I attended the McKenzie Family Presidential Leadership Conference as my chapter’s philanthropy chairman. As I was not the chapter president, I initially assumed the knowledge I would take back with me would not be useful for my current position. However, I was very much proven wrong. The conference allowed me to grow significantly as a leader, which was a huge help in planning events and keeping my chapter accountable. Not only that, the mock chapter sessions and keynote speakers gave me a plethora of new and positive methodologies I could implement for philanthropy events. As a result, I am spearheading a five-hundred-person philanthropy event to raise a significant amount of money for Live Like Lou and helping many brothers become Iron Phis. McKenzie was a last-minute decision, but I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity.”

At both Kleberg and McKenzie, I learned the importance of empathy in definition and practice. The chaplain program at Kleberg introduced me to having difficult conversations with someone who might just need a shoulder to lean on. At McKenzie, I learned critical skills in working with others. The President position requires a lot of empathy when setting expectations for peers and fellow chapter members.

I would recommend to every brother of Phi Delta Theta to attend all the conferences possible. They were one of the most eye-opening experiences that I have had in my entire life. Also, more than just attending, I would encourage them to take everything to heart. Put yourself in uncomfortable situations; that is the only way to truly see growth.”

My greatest takeaway from the Shaffer Honors College of Leadership is that you must be a good leader all the time, not some of the time. People rely on you as a leader of your chapter every day; it doesn’t matter what kind of day you’re having; consistency matters. So, when making difficult decisions for the house, you must be consistent; that is how you grow as a leader.

Sixty Years of Phis of Faith

Celebrating a major milestone in Campaign 2030

Just over sixty years ago, Phi Delta Theta Board of Trustees President Grosvenor S. McKee, Ohio 1916, petitioned loyal Phi Delt alumni to “earmark immediate gifts of $100 to the Phi Delta Theta Educational Foundation.” Brother McKee’s appeal roughly equals today’s Trustees’ Roundtable Society membership of $1,000. The Foundation was ramping up and finding its footing in the early 1960s. Brother McKee encouraged “Phis of faith to join in this adventure of faith.”

During the 2021 Phi Delta Theta General Biennial Convention in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Phi Delta Theta Foundation launched Campaign 2030: A Greater Version for Tomorrow. At that time, we recognized seventy-four Phis as lead donors to the Campaign for making gifts of $25,000 or more and announced $8 million raised towards the $30 million goal. Campaign 2030 is a comprehensive ten-year campaign, so every Phi matters, every major gift, and all Phi Delt Fund support year after year. We will recognize new campaign contributors and celebrate our Campaign progress next June at the General Biennial Convention 2023 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Today, however, I want to share some significant Foundation news. On November 1, 2022, just sixteen months after the public launch of Campaign 2030, we booked our one-hundredth major gift commitment! This is no small measure—just as the Phis of Faith helped to shore up resources to support scholarships in the 1960s when the Phi Delta Theta Foundation was in its infancy, today, Phis of faith are joining us on the journey to achieve the objectives of Phi Delt 2030 to be recognized as North America’s premier fraternal leadership society. To our first one hundred lead campaign donors, I render a salute. To those considering joining the march to the objective, we welcome you aboard!

A New Partnership Gives Our Members More

Phi Delts earned college credit through Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute Conference experience

Phi Delta Theta is known for its commitment to sound learning through innovative education. In this spirit, we piloted a new academic program to continue the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute experience this fall. Through a first-of-its-kind, transformative partnership between Phi Delta Theta and Sonoma State University, we offered an online, asynchronous leadership course worth four-semester academic credits that transferred to each member’s home campus.

This course, Applied Communication and Leadership in Student Organizations, allowed our emerging leaders to enhance their Kleberg experience and guide them on the next steps of their leadership journey. Taught by Emily Acosta Lewis, PhD and Mike Ogg, MBA, Sonoma State ’01, the course’s overview and learning objectives stated were: This course will examine the intersection between leadership and communication in student organizations. In this course, you will learn what leadership is and how to identify leadership opportunities in your organization. Additionally, you will understand how to take full advantage of ongoing leadership opportunities by creating a personal

action plan. Through the discovery of pitfalls of leadership, you will learn about avoiding them as an emerging leader. You will learn about organizational threats and practical solutions to help you and your organization maintain high performance. Finally, in this course, change strategies will help you achieve growth as a leader in your organization.

This exclusive opportunity was only available for Phi Delts who attended the 2022 Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute in Oxford, Ohio. They received a Foundation grant covering tuition for the four-unit credit course.

Given the success of the fall leadership course, Phi Delt offered a similar opportunity to attendees of the 2023 McKenzie Family Presidents Leadership Conference to participate in an upper-level leadership course worth four-semester academic credits. This will help guide our chapter presidents on the next steps of their leadership journey.

General Headquarters and the Education Committee continue to research and look for new partnerships and ways to further enhance and prepare our members for their post-collegiate lives.

Phi Delta Theta Foundation Awards $593,448 in Scholarships and Fellowships

Thanks to the vision and generosity of its donors, the Phi Delta Theta Foundation awarded 442 scholarships to its undergraduate members and alumni who are continuing their graduate studies for the 2022–23 academic year. The Foundation disbursed a record total of $593,448.46 in scholarships and fellowships for the year.

The First-Generation Student Scholarship was introduced during the 2021–22 academic year to support first-generation college students while complementing and strengthening the Fraternity’s diversity and inclusion efforts. The Foundation awarded $250,000 in academic scholarships for Phi Delt first-generation new members. The Fraternity knows that, statistically, first-generation college students are more likely to face financial hardships during college. The goal of these scholarships is to lower that economic burden, creating access to membership in Phi Delta Theta for those students, and assisting Phi Delta Theta chapters in becoming more representative on its campuses.

There was a significant increase in the number of Whole Man Scholarship applications, with a renewed emphasis on attendance at the Shaffer Honors College of Leadership, held in Oxford, Ohio, in conjunction with the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute. For the first time, attendees received their scholarship award and certificate of completion at the graduation ceremony.

Since in-person conferences have resumed, great attention has been paid to increasing attendance at the McKenzie Family Presidents Leadership Conference and Shaffer Honors College of Leadership, increasing the Harrison President Scholarship and Whole Man Scholarship recipients in 2022. Therefore, $111,568 was awarded to the Harrison Presidential Scholars and Whole Man Scholars.

Each year, the Foundation receives an extraordinary number of applications from deserving and well-qualified members making the selection process challenging for the local and national judging committees. The exemplification of the Cardinal Principles is especially considered when awarding named scholarships and fellowships. Undergraduate Phis received an additional $196,200 in support from scholarships named by generous donors. Phi Delta Theta alumni seeking to continue their studies in graduate school were awarded $39,000 in fellowships.

Scholarship applications are now accessible through myPhiDelt and will remain open year-round.

For the 2022–23 academic year, the Phi Delta Theta Foundation Board of Trustees has again approved $250,000 in scholarships for first-generation new members. A portion of these dollars has

been earmarked to give special consideration to new members who are also active members of an official collegiate sports team and have not received an athletic scholarship from their college or university.

Harrison Presidents Scholarships and Whole Man Scholarships are available to be awarded to attendees at the 2023 McKenzie Family Presidents Leadership Conference and the Shaffer Honors College of Leadership. In-person attendance at these events is a requirement for the award; other conditions can be found in the scholarship section of myPhiDelt.

Every Phi Delta Theta member can apply for at least one scholarship annually through their myPhiDelt account. We encourage each student to review application deadlines to ensure they submit their application promptly. Many applications require an essay. Because the essay is a heavy part of the judging criteria, applicants are encouraged to review their essays for correctness and clarity before submitting their applications.

If you have trouble accessing the scholarships section of myPhiDelt or have questions about available scholarships, please contact the Phi Delta Theta Foundation’s Scholarship Coordinator Bonnie Schiller at bschiller@phideltatheta.org.

Congratulations to this year’s awardees, and good luck to next year’s applicants!

RYDER HANKINS NAMED ARTHUR R. PRIEST RECIPIENT

The Phi Delta Theta Foundation is pleased to announce Ryder R. Hankins, UNLV ’22, as the 2022–23 recipient of the Arthur R. Priest award. The Arthur R. Priest award is the Foundation’s largest and most prestigious scholarship and is awarded to the student who scores the highest based on merit.

Ryder’s scholarship application was accompanied by a glowing recommendation from his Chapter Advisory Board Chair Peter C. Dreissig, Utah ’86. Peter says, “Ryder is a perfect example of a Phi Delta Theta brother. He is a friend, has a strong academic record, and is honest and open with his communication. I am grateful to have him as a Phi brother and wholeheartedly recommend him for a scholarship.”

Currently studying business with a focus on international relations, Ryder hopes to earn his master’s degree and work internationally after finishing school. His application specifically spoke of using Phi Delta Theta’s Cardinal Principles to remain resilient while working in a foreign country, “I hope to focus my career on understanding how cultural and societal differences impact consumer decisions between countries. My dream has always been to live and work internationally. The Cardinal Principles of Phi Delta Theta will guide me in that process.” He describes using Friendship to connect with others, Sound Learning to broaden his perspectives and remain committed in a foreign land, and Rectitude to remain grounded and conduct ethical business.

Please join the Phi Delta Theta Foundation in congratulating Ryder on this achievement and wishing him the best in his future endeavors!

Recently, alumnus Thomas Van Dyke, Kansas ’60, pledged a $25,000 match to the Arthur R. Priest Fund with the goal of increasing the fund so that an exceptional student can be awarded $10,000 annually. You can contribute to this goal today and have your donation matched. Visit phideltatheta.org/donate and comment “Priest Award.”

WORLD-CLASS MCKENZIE FAMILY PRESIDENT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE RETURNS TO ST. LOUIS

January 2022 saw Phi Delta Theta’s return to in-person educational event, the McKenzie Family Presidents Leadership Conference. Held in St. Louis, Missouri, and attended by over 225 Phis, this is the Fraternity’s premier educational event for our chapter’s newly elected presidents.

The conference included a world-class lineup of speakers, small group meetings facilitated by an outstanding group of conference faculty and education breakout sessions on topics such as diversity and inclusion, mental health, and inclusive recruitment practices. Of course, there is plenty of downtime for students to get to know each other, connect about issues facing their chapters, and build relationships that will buoy them throughout their presidencies.

“My McKenzie experience will help me as a leader in that I learned that many of the issues we face are common to other chapters, and the men around me gave me some good ideas on how they approach and solve those problems.”

KLEBERG EMERGING LEADERS INSTITUTE RETURNS TO THE BIRTHPLACE

OF PHI DELTA THETA

Late July 2022 saw almost 1,000 Phi Delts come together from all over North America to attend the 2022 Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute in Oxford, Ohio. This statistic represents the second-largest Kleberg ever.

The mission of Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute is to fulfill The Bond’s principles by providing values-based leadership development skills to enact positive changes.

The conference included a world-class lineup of speakers, small group meetings facilitated by an outstanding group of conference faculty, and education breakout sessions on topics such as chapter operations best practices, health and safety prevention, diversity and inclusion, and recruitment support. In addition, of course, there are plenty of downtimes for students to get to know each other, connect about issues facing their chapters, and build relationships that will buoy them throughout their executive officer tenure.

“I have been filled with great appreciation over this weekend for the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute. This honor will not just be for the few days that I am here, but for the rest of my life.”

The leadership training at the conferences I attended was invaluable. I left McKenzie with the tools necessary to lead my chapter and left Shaffer Honors College of Leadership with the skills to lead in my future professional career. Meeting Phis from around the country made these both fantastic experiences and made me proud to be a Phi. They were 100 percent worth it, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.”
