A light bulb moment for next career move

The one job every graduate has – and nobody ever tells you about.

You’ve put the hours in.

You got the degree.

It proves you have the skills to help an organisation with their targets and goals. Your value has increased and finally, the world is your oyster.

Time to put your talent to work and let the career offers pour in.

Only… it doesn’t often happen like that.

You sit back and the calls don’t actually come pouring in.

And you possibly sit a while pondering where it all went wrong.

Because few people mention to you that there’s a missing step.

A step that few rarely tell you about.

You need to become a marketer.

It’s the marketing step that’s missing.

What are you marketing?

You.

You’re marketing you.

GBS UK Alumni Newsletter | April 2024 4

Before you switch off thinking that you’re no marketer or it’s a waste of time as my career role isn’t related to marketing, I’m here to argue that your role is a marketer.

In fact, it’s your most important role – ever!

The better you market yourself, the better your pay, role, conditions, lifestyle, altitude in life.

Don’t believe me?

Here’s a lightbulb moment.

Who invented the first lightbulb?

Tip: it’s not Thomas Edison.

Thomas Edison never claimed to invent anything. He was simply great at taking existing ideas and patenting them (sometimes modifying them I will admit).

He was, though, superb at marketing ideas.

Yet he’s universally recognised as inventing the lightbulb and his earnings reflect this.

Now, I’m not saying go and flat out steal ideas.

Simply, look at the roles you wished you can do given your degree.

And make sure that the hiring managers recognise how you are best suited to the role given your skillset and learnings.

Give the hiring managers their lightbulb moment that makes them realise you might be a perfect fit for their vacant role.

Want some help on how to market yourself?

We have careers consultants that can spot the skills you may not even recognise you have yourself.

Get in touch and we’ll shed some light on where you’re capable of working with salaries, roles and lifestyles to match.
