Know Your Electrical Panel

Understanding your electrical panel’s installation is the first step toward safety. Electrical panels (often called circuit breaker panels) are typically located in basements, garages, or utility rooms.

Inside, you’ll find labeled circuit breakers that control power flow to different areas of your home. Familiarize yourself with these labels, as they indicate which breakers control which areas.

Knowing your panel will make it easier to cut power quickly in case of emergencies or when performing basic maintenance.

Avoid Overloading Circuits

Each circuit breaker in your panel is rated for a specific amperage, generally 15 to 20 amps. When you exceed this limit by plugging in too many devices or appliances, it can overload the circuit, causing the breaker to trip or even overheat. Be mindful of high-power appliances, especially in older homes where circuits may not be equipped to handle modern demands. Spread out the usage of high-power items and avoid “daisy-chaining” power strips. If you frequently trip breakers, consult an electrician to upgrade your panel or add additional circuits.

Check for Outdated Panels and Breakers

If your home is older or has an older electrical panel, it may need an upgrade. Outdated panels can overheat or fail to trip during a power surge, increasing the risk of electrical fires. It’s wise to schedule an inspection by a licensed electrician to assess whether your panel is safe or if an upgrade is needed. Replacing an outdated panel can improve your home’s safety and make it more energy-efficient.

Overheated Wires and Connections

If you notice a burning smell or feel heat near your electrical panel, this is often a sign of overheated wires or connections. Overheating may occur if circuits are overloaded or if wiring is worn or damaged. Ignoring these warning signs can lead to fires or serious electrical issues down the line.

Recommendation:

If you detect any burning odors or warmth coming from your panel, immediately call an electrician. It’s always safer to have these signs investigated to prevent potential hazards.
