SHAFT is the visible part of the hair, outside the skin. SEBACEOUS GLAND responsible for the production of sebum, an oily secretion which in the right quantities provides protection to the scalp.

ERECTOR MUSCLE OF THE HAIR

A fibrous structural protein particularly rich in alanine, leucine and arginine and the sulphur amino acid cysteine. The disulphide bonds formed between the sulphur atoms of the keratin chains are very strong and give the hair strength and resistance.

PAPILLA a structure rich in blood vessels, lymph vessels and nerve structures with the task of providing nourishment and sustenance to the cells of the hair matrix. The medulla

is the central part of the hair and is formed by keratinised cells of large size.

The cortex

is the intermediate layer and has the function of conferring mechanical and resistance properties to the hair.

is the outermost layer of the hair and consists of flattened lamellae. When these lamellae are closed and arranged neatly along the shaft, they reflect the light, giving the hair a shiny appearance. Whereas if they are open and have raised edges, the hair take on a dull and matt appearance.

The hair life cycle Each hair follicle has a life cycle that lasts an average of 2 to 7 years and involves the alternation of four main phases:

At this stage, the hair follicle loses its connection with the dermal papilla, resulting in the loss of vital functions and growth activity.

At this stage, the cells at the base of the hair follicle are in active division and this determines the elongation of the hair.

At this stage the hair remains still inserted in the hair follicle but gradually loses its anchorage to the skin due to the thrust of the new hair underneath.

It is the phase in which the actual fall of the hair. The esogen phase will be followed a new anagen phase.

How much hair do we lose per day? Under physiological conditions, an average of loss of an average of 100 hairs per day.
