Table of Content Introduction Since the pandemic, social interactions have changed drastically, and space became more isolated for people. The project redefines what future spaces will provide to responds to the regulations that keep people isolated from their community and adapt to the situation from the locals’ area. The focus of this project is to look into the less known community where are practices are kept within local communities and how to encourage these groups to share to the community and grow into an artistic community from the various background creating harmonization of cultures through their heritage artistic expressions.

Un-common-Unity

The thesis explores the term Uncommon-unity, which can be reinterpret as a group of people with different lifestyle, background, but shared a similar interest whether its their career, hobby, or certain beliefs/rituals. Furthermore, they are lesser known groups within the social circles that are excluded from the norm and form their or social circle that branch out from the common community.

Thesis Statement Coburg’s creative communities are losing their space to express their interest, which destroys the engagement in their local community, causing a lot of art business to shut down and local identity. New spaces should encourage self-developing skills, and collaboration (Klinenberg, E., 2018) in their interest and create income opportunities in these crucial times.

Contemporary community infrastructure should be inclusive and celebrated for its multi cultural background, gender, and physical abilities and inspired to create artwork, workshop, vdo production, live performances, and community design to support their living expenses, while contributing their skills back into the community.

Different modern Social circle Creates Smaller Communities A local community is comprised of other small groups in their social circle. These circles can share common interests that can be seen uncommon compare to other groups (Vogl,2016), which can raised some interest or misunderstanding between these smaller communities. Certain attributes can disturb other communities as well. eg. Noise, visual, certain movements, etc.

Rare Art Forms (Heritage art Forms) Furthermore, there are sub groups of people who still perform traditional art forms, which that are inherited throughout their generations. However, it is mostly practices in close environment such as families and people with similar backgrounds, and most are shown in markets, and cultural event. Their should be a platform for these endangered art forms to be brought back to the contemporary world, and still practiced and shared to their communities.

Research: Art from previous generations Endangered art forms such as craftsmanship, traditional Dances and even cooking reside within the facilities tradition and should be shared to the community.

Example, ritual dances such Theyyam in india, Kabukis are considered rare performances. Most are practices in the region, which makes it more difficult to preserve and shared to the public (RTF, Arpitha S,2021). Furthermore, throughout the pandemic, most events are shutdown leaving the art form in stagnated conditions and might be difficult to revive. This can happen to other heritage art forms ass well, where it is forgotten without constant practice, and by providing spaces in the local community, artists can have spaces to practice.

This lead to creating spaces that respond to the research questions and how it can be assembled to unite these small communities with not being marginalized and felt left out. The idea is to turn these interest into an education space where it can be shared and experience with other communities.

The space is a platform for revival through resources, collaboration, education, and representation to the public.

Every country has its own heritage cultural background that has been lost or ignore from contemporary growth of cities and most of these art forms are practices quite within their own small communities.

Some are proud, and some kept it quite to their own.

Characteristics The research question respond well for the site in Coburg, which is a locality in the city of Moreland, Victoria. The reason is the diverse cultural backgrounds and the lack of contemporary facilities that embodies its cultural significances and local interests.

Coburg has existing local streets and cultural events which can be more enhanced with a community creative center.

The proposed space will share and educate different types of artistic expression in the forms of performances, arts and design, and multipurpose areas for various niche communities in the area.

A strong local community can be formed that can provide safety, and challenge the city council when facing injustice in their service.

Location 1: Precinct 4: Carpark stripe From this initial analysis, the site is located near the education facility and the council building. This will provide easy access to the facility, and connect the existing leisure center at the south, which joins main street into a larger complex. According to the COBURG PRINCIPAL ACTIVITY CENTRE,2014, it is intended to create connections with the street of Coburg.

People of Coburg Local Artists The people of Coburg pay attention to creative expression through various form of art. One of the events that is shown in the Moreland City Council channel on YouTube since 2012 is the carnival, which provide a space for the local creative communities to expression themselves.

Furthermore, Coburg’s local artist are interested in public art installation such as mural, sculptures, and yarn bombing.

Coburg is a suburb and a part of the City council of Moreland, where it is a diverse place with many cultural backgrounds. The area is becoming a destination for young artists that usually practice visual arts such as graffiti, public sculptures, musician and performers usually from nearby cities such as Brunswick, and Collingwood.

Coburg’s Issue Unavoidable Gentrification & Locals opinion Coburg is facing gentrification, causing the sense of community and ownership to gradually disappear as shown in the The “Changing Face of Australian Suburban Shopping Malls”, which discuss the probability that old fashioned mall might get redevelop to a much more efficient space for growing in population migrating in.

One of the interview with True North Cafe suggested that they should be a library and a cultural related business open more to liven up the city while keeping the development more diverse.

Problem 1. Area is facing increases pricing in properties, which is an early sign of gentrification.

2. Old commercial buildings are targeted for re-development, causing locals to move away.

3. Locals are only using smaller street for there carnival/cultural events, which is currently not well represented as Coburg’s highlights.

4. Non local moving in might not understand Coburg’s diverse historical and not participate with the community causing the relationship to disappear.

Existing Site at Coburg The existing site is a car park which creates a flat surface of asphalt collecting heat gain from the sun. It does not create any connection to the community and creates a heat surface area to the space. The location is ideal for creating shading and providing activities, learning and relax around the most active area in Coburg. It is also accessible for non locals who will come by public transport to participate in the facility and enjoying their time in the event.

Proposed Solution 1. Coburg needs a resource center can provide learning facilities where local can learning about design for them to develop the ability to decide how they want their city to develop.

2. Permeable Space Connecting the commercial space (west), Existing School (North), Residential (south, east) for efficient access to the resource center.

3. Locate the center near the leisure center to provide balance between learning and exercise within the area.

Response to Coburg One factor Coburg needs is to preserve its diversity in culture through its creative community. By placing a art related resource facility where all the different building context connect together through a permeable space can create a space available for all local members to use.

Furthermore, the parking space will be replaced by green space to accommodate for artistic outdoor activity, and also a space to hold the carnivals which is one of Coburg’s special event. it will be enriched and more celebrate than its original a place at Victoria mall street.

4. If Coburg is not develop, people will move out to find better job opportunities.

Case Study 1: School of Science and Sports at a Historic college in Brighton Reflection

The school demonstrates the use of spacial qualities to set up the foundations foe the programs between sports and academics. This allows both communities to have a relationship while circulation along the building. The strategy allows students to gain interaction within other activities as well and not caught up with their own field.

Case Study 2:

Thailand Creative & Design Center, City: Khon Kaen Reflection One of the key factors of this creative center is the use of transparency to encourage full visual of the activities.

This also allow natural light to pass through which is ideal for reading. Also the library is lifted with a open space at the bottom which receive natural ventilation for those who prefer to read outdoors.

Reflection Although this is a conceptual project, it provide a good introduction into an architecture that requires participation from the community to build the space. One significant factors of this project is how the designer uses different structural types (Primary, secondary, tertiary) to assemble the hub.

Case Study 4:

Surry Hills Library and Community Centre / FJMT, 2009 Reflection This case study is similar to the TCDC in Thailand, but the focus is on the sun shade arrangement. Also this project introduced a computer operating system into the building to adapt to the climate conditions throughout the day.

Environment design system is heavily emphasis in this project to provide a good comfort zone inside the building for communities.

Literature Review 01 The essay starts out by what creates a strong sense of community in a public space low (less surface parking, higher levels in commercial area ratio to land use of multipurpose area), and what causes a weak sense of community (suburbanization, long commute to work, and prolong independence aging population). The writings further explore how people use the space by conducting experiment which results in that a strong sense of community usually occurs in shops more that open areas. Furthermore, green space also have a major role for less crime and positive psychological effect.

Literature Review 02 The book presents the structure of a community and how it performs to maintain its structure. A community is created from a sense of belonging of people, shared by common interest. Also the author analyses the structure withing the ring that although the individual is in a community. He mention the inner rings of deeper desire of belongs and exclusiveness inside the community groups, which continues into a trap of never ending desires to be a part of a group.

Cultural Celebration Weaving Cultures The idea is to create a permeable space that connects and lead to discovery of different spaces that is created through multicultural backgrounds, art-forms and encourage interaction between people. Also the space will be able to expose the process and artists character to community members to

Homage/Context Character Creative Atmosphere Brick, timber, plaster and a hint of steel are the main materials use in Coburg, which creates warmth of comfort.

The character of warmth gives a sense of ease and safety. However, Coburg is sensing a change where gentrified material is being use more and eventually take over the area. The though of using the warmth of local materials will preserve the characteristic of the location.

Solar Control Space of Light The Art house consists of different spaces use for different activities. The concept is to create a adaptable envelop t typologies that treats the sunlight differently according to the spacial usage for different artist through out the day. Mass Iteration 03: Center Ground Activity The massing is develop from the program diagram where the semi-commercial area is created to create a transition between the commercial district to the creative hubs. The retails in the hub create a space for artist to be able to sell their product and hold exhibition. The facility is pushed back to the inner of the property line to create more open area for ground activities. This will provide multipurpose use in the area encouraging participants for Coburg’s Local artists, especially live musicians and performers.

Mass Iteration 04: Connecting Art Fragments This massing explores the possibility for creating maximum permeable space at the ground floor and putting most of the programs o the upper floor. It is combined with different blocks of programs that are connected by the massing bridge to encourage artist to explore the area and get inspired by different art forms that are practices in the hub. The strategy still provides freedom to control the ground floor and support the access from different direction.

Access in Raise Level Floor Provide access on raised floor Most wheelchair lift are considered band aid to universal (inclusive) design. One of the reason is because the design does not integrate well into the design. However for the proposal offers mechanical solution to hide the mechanics and allows people with physical challenges to experience space typologies such as raised floors with multilevel programs. The Layout of the Plan for the artist village consist of 4 main spaces that transitioned from the existing context.

The Play space that connects to the Coburg Primary school The extended courtyard that extended from the Bridges reserve and provide spacing for the Coburg Leisure Center.

The maker space that allows the public to see the work of local artist and can join in for workshops and collaborations and the art street that is set on the commercial area of Sydney Road and use it to sell art and host daily events to celebrate the local artist and opportunity to create a local economy.
