Blaine School District is testing water fixtures for lead By Oliver Lazenby After replacing 12 faucets that tested higher than allowable threshold for lead last year, the Blaine School District is continuing to identify and replace fixtures that don’t meet Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards. District superintendent Ron Spanjer updated the school board on the process at

its July 30 meeting. The district is waiting on results from lead testing at Blaine Primary School, and if any fixtures test above its threshold, they’ll be replaced within days, Spanjer said. The district doesn’t know when it will get test results. The Washington State Department of Health tested all the fixtures at Blaine elementary in March 2018, and in April the district replaced two sink faucets with

More than 60 candidates are running for key federal, state and county positions, including U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, State Representative, State Senator and Whatcom County Council, among others. The top two candidates receiving the most votes, despite party affiliation, will move on to the general election on

Tuesday, November 6. This year, election ballots can be mailed without postage due to an agreement struck between secretary of state Kim Wyman and governor Jay Inslee to boost turnout. In a statement, Whatcom County Auditor Debbie Adelstein said ballots must be postmarked no later than August 7. “Voters are encouraged to check the last pick-up time posted on the mailbox if waiting until election day to mail their ballot,” Adelstein said in a statement. “Ballots deposited after the last pick-up

time on election day will not have a valid postmark and can’t be counted.” Voters can also return their ballots at an official ballot drop box, including those located at Birch Bay North Whatcom Fire and Rescue, 4581 Birch Bay-Lynden Road; Custer Elementary, 7660 Custer School Road; Blaine Public Library, 610 3rd Street; and at the Whatcom County Courthouse, 201 Grand Avenue Bellingham. Seafaring folk from all around are set to attend Drayton Harbor Days this weekend. The annual maritime festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday, August 4-5, at the Blaine Harbor Boating Center, located at 235 Marine Drive. From 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, volunteers at the Blaine Senior Center, 763 G Street, will serve up a pancake breakfast. The breakfast will include a selection of pancakes, French toast, waffles, scrambled eggs, sausage, coffee and orange juice. The cost to attend is $6 for adults and $4 for children under the age of 6. Starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Blaine Marine Park, nonprofit Let’s Move! Blaine will sponsor the 18th annual Run to the Border 5K. A 1-mile Kids Marina Fun Run and Walk, for children age 10 and under, will precede the race at 8:30 a.m. Day-of registration is available for racers and costs $16 for adults, $10 for age 7 to 12 and $6 for children age 6 and under. All proceeds will go toward the construction of a new playground at Blaine Elementary School. This year, volunteers from Blaine-Birch Bay Park and Recreation District 2 are promising a slew of pirate-themed activities at ‘Pirate Daze’ between 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday at Blaine Marine Park. Pirates from all around – including the Shady Isle Pirates from Steveston, B.C. – will sing sea chanteys, perform historical reenactments and even shoot a real cannon. To boot, a parade will take place at noon

The Editor: Here we are, already into the month of August and the 2018 to 2019 school year is on the horizon. As in previous years, the Blaine School District Family Service Center will provide backpacks full of school supplies to our low-income, foster and homeless students. The Family Service Center is in need of school supply donations. If you would like to donate money you may do so to give us the ability to buy supplies in bulk at a lower price. If you would rather donate supplies – backpacks, composition books, USB drives, highlighters, dividers and scissors are most needed at this time. For monetary donations, please mail a check to: Blaine School District Family Service Center, 765 H Street, Blaine, WA 98230. Please make checks out to Blaine Family Service Center (this is tax deductible and a receipt will be provided.) If you would rather drop off monetary donation or supplies, you may do so any time between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., at the Blaine school district office located at 765 H Street. This service is provided only by donations from our amazing community. Rebecca Potts, Family Service Center Blaine The Editor: I would like to take this opportunity to correct a factual error and add a few words to what was an otherwise well-covered article about the upcoming Prestigious George Raft Race (PGRR), which will start at high noon on Saturday, August 4 at the Port of Bellingham’s Public Boat Launch at the Blaine Harbor Marina.

Those folks wanting to participate building their own rafts are welcome to purchase “parts and pieces” for their rafts meaning, “stuff” like nails, screws, tape, canned foam, etc. Items used to help hold one’s raft together are welcome to use. The intent of this rule is to help level the playing field so that money isn’t a factor in determining who might be the winner. The PGRR is a lot of fun and I encourage everyone to consider putting together a raft for the chance of winning the perpetual Prestigious George Raft Race Trophy. The winning individual or team gets to “own” the trophy for one full year and until the next race when the next winner takes possession of the trophy for a year. Race participants are welcomed to employ water squirters to annoy fellow racers during the race. I know our raft will have a full complement of water squirters to annoy and distract all who try to get close to our raft. Lastly, the raft race ends at the gangway ramp below the harbor master’s office at Blaine Harbor gate 2. I encourage everyone to consider participating in this fun-filled raft race as each year there seems to be a different winner. Those who just want to watch can come down to the harbor’s transient float (gate 2) where the historic Plover landing is and watch the racers paddle by on their way to the finish line. Richard Sturgill, PGRR committee member Blaine The Editor: With the upcoming primary and midterm elections here are a few things that are puzzling to me: 1. Why are people so upset about foreigners interfering in our elections, while they have no problem with millions of people entering and staying illegally in the U.S., and now San Francisco, and others are registering them to vote? 2. How can some people advocate open borders when they themselves live in gated communities or secure buildings? 3. Why do security experts and even the AARP urge people to always request ID from anyone coming to their door – be it for deliveries, repairs or other work – but it is wrong and ‘discrimination’ to insist on voter ID? 4. Why do so many people protest to keep families of illegals together but they don’t care about the high divorce rate and the growing single-parent households in our country? 5) How come so many people cite the needs and rights of children, yet they support the gruesome business practice of Planned Parenthood (which we taxpayers pay for)? It must be so confusing to hold two totally opposite views and opinions at the

same time. There is a German proverb that says, “If you want to improve the world, start at your own doorstep.” Elisabeth Angell Blaine The Editor: The summit in Helsinki with President Trump and Vladimir Putin has caused a majority of Americans to wonder if Donald Trump’s loyalty is to the United States or Putin’s Russia. Republican and Democratic leaders have labeled his press conference with Putin as “shameful” and “disgraceful.” President Trump appeared to believe Putin’s denial of interfering in our U.S. elections over the proof and conclusions of our United States’ Intelligence agencies. However, the Republican-controlled Congress has done little or nothing to find out what was said or agreed to in his two-hour meeting with Putin. My conclusion is that Republican office holders will do nothing to rein in President Trump. They will not even subpoena our U.S. translator to find out what happened in his meeting with Vladimir Putin. We, the citizens, must exercise our vote these next few months and vote only for Democrats to provide a check on President Trump. Our safety, rights, and way of life depend on it. Layne Boyce Birch Bay The Editor: Last summer, Blaine Public Works did a great job repaving Sweet Road from the city line to Odell Street. Had they gone the next 120 feet or so to Yew Road – when they had the men, equipment, materials, and resources – the job would have been complete. As it is, it’s the end of July and no commencement date has been established to finish the work. What’s up with that, BPW? I paid my taxes. The importance of maintaining clean teeth and healthy gums goes beyond having fresh breath and a white smile. Oral hygiene plays an integral role in overall health. Research indicates that oral health mirrors the condition of the body as a whole. Regular dental visits can alert dentists about overall health and pinpoint if a person is at a risk for chronic disease. Heart disease According to the Academy of General Dentistry, there is a distinct relationship between periodontal disease and conditions such as heart disease and stroke. Joint teams at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom and the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland, found that people with bleeding gums from poor dental hygiene could have an increased risk of heart disease. Bacteria from the mouth is able to enter the bloodstream when bleeding gums are present. That bacteria can stick to platelets and subsequently form blood clots. This interrupts the flow of blood to the heart and may trigger a heart attack. Brushing and flossing twice daily and rinsing with mouthwash can remove bacteria and keep gums healthy. Facial pain The Office of the Surgeon General says infections of the gums that support the teeth can lead to facial and oral pain. Gingivitis, which is an early stage of gum disease, as well as advanced gum disease, affects more than 75 percent of the American population. Dental decay can lead to its own share of pain. Maintaining a healthy mouth can fend off decay and infections and prevent pain. Pancreatic cancer In 2007, the Harvard School of Public Health reported a link between gum disease and pancreatic cancer. In the ongoing study, 51,000 men were followed and data was collected beginning in 1986. The Harvard researchers found that men with a history of gum disease had a 64 percent increased risk of pancreatic cancer compared with men who had never had gum disease. The greatest risk for pancreatic cancer among this group was in men with re(Continued on next page)

Alzheimer’s disease Various health ailments, including poor oral health, have been linked to a greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. In 2010, after reviewing 20 years’ worth of data, researchers from New York University concluded that there is a link between gum inflammation and Alzheimer’s disease. Follow-up studies from researchers at the University of Central Lancashire in the United Kingdom compared brain samples from 10 living patients with Alzheimer’s to samples from 10 people who did not have the disease. Data indicated that a bacterium – Porphyromonas gingivalis – was present in the Alzheimer’s brain samples but not in the samples from the brains of people who did not have Alzheimer’s. P. gingivalis is usually associated with chronic gum disease. As a result of the study, experts think that the bacteria can move via nerves in the roots of teeth that connect directly with the brain or through bleeding gums.

State issues reminder about vaccines By Oliver Lazenby After confirming several measles cases in Snohomish County, the Washington State Department of Health is reminding people to get the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. The Snohomish Health District confirmed four new cases of measles in the same Snohomish County household last month, according

to a July 12 press release. The individuals – one adult and three kids – developed fevers and rashes before being confirmed with measles, according to a press release from the Snohomish Health District. Also in early July, health officials in Multnomah County, Oregon, confirmed a case of measles near Portland. Measles is a highly contagious and potentially severe disease that causes fever, rash, cough, and red,

watery eyes. It is mainly spread through the air after a person with measles coughs or sneezes and is one of the leading causes of death for children worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Measles symptoms begin 7-21 days after exposure. It’s contagious approximately four days before to four days after the rash appears. School students in Washington must have a MMR immunization

before starting kindergarten unless a parent signs an exemption form, which they can do for personal or religious reason. During the 2017-2018 school year, 90.6 percent of kindergartners and 96.1 percent of sixth graders in Washington state had upto-date MMR vaccines. “Replacing faucets all the way down to 10 parts per billion is an extra step we’re committed to taking,” Spanjer said at the meeting. Spanjer noted that only faucets needed to be replaced. Samples found five or less parts per billion of lead in all but one elementary school drinking fountain, and most drinking fountains had less than 1 part per billion, according to the health department. The state also tested Point Roberts Primary School earlier this year and all fixtures tested below 10 parts per billion, Spanjer said.

State lawmakers passed funding to test for lead in public school drinking water in 2017, after two elementary schools in Tacoma found fixtures with lead levels way over the EPA’s threshold – up to hundreds or even thousands of parts per billion. The state funding isn’t enough to cover all state public schools, and the district is waiting to see if the state will test Blaine Middle School this year. If it doesn’t, the district had budgeted to pay for the testing on its own. The school district did its own “selective testing“ at all district schools in 2016, Spanjer said. Those tests focused on drinking fountains and faucets in cooking areas and all the fixtures sampled

Still time to share ideas for the Birch Bay Library By Oliver Lazenby If you didn’t make it to the two community input sessions for the future Birch Bay Library, there’s still time to share your ideas for the building’s design. The Whatcom County Library System has a survey at WCLS. org/birchbaysurvey, which offers a last chance for input before the third and final design meeting on Saturday, August 18. “The time for community input is now,” said WCLS deputy director Michael Cox. “Once we get past the next meeting, there won’t be many opportunities to shape the library.” Planning is already well underway for the library, which will be located at 7968 Birch Bay Drive, a property that currently has a Craftsman-style house and two outbuildings.

At the second design meeting on July 16, about 35 attendees split into groups and came up with different arrangements for specific areas to be included in the library, such as a lobby, kids’ section, teen section, computer and media areas, parking and staff workroom. “We rolled up our sleeves and got to work developing design concepts together,” Cox said. “We were all actively participating and talking about how these different functions of a library can be pieced together.” Cox said that many of the designs had some common features, including keeping parking away from the front of the building, maintaining the view of the bay and locating bathrooms and staff areas toward the back of the property. Zervas Architects will use

those designs to create an initial design for the layout that will be presented at the final design meeting. Zervas Architects will also present a more thorough design review of the Craftsman house with an analysis on how best to use it and how much it will cost to incorporate into the design, Cox said. “That’s something we need to determine before we move any further along,” he said. The final design meeting goes from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 18, on the front lawn of the Birch Bay Library site at 7968 Birch Bay Drive. February 1, 1924 – July 7, 2018 Beloved mother Virginia F. Thomas, 94, of Blaine, WA passed away into the loving arms of our Lord on the afternoon of July 7, 2018 at Stafholt Nursing Home. Virginia was visited and comforted by family members, with her daughters by her side at the time of passing. Virginia was born February 1, 1924, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a daughter of Marculino and Maria D.A. Cordeiro. Virginia was a lifelong Christian with a deep abiding faith. She struggled with multiple sclerosis for many years, as well as other illnesses. But her faith kept her strong, with a sunny and positive attitude. Virginia was a bookkeeper for Exports, Inc. and for many years walked to and from home in downtown Blaine. Before her disability prevented it, she loved to dance. Virginia enjoyed gospel music, singing and one of her recent favorite musical groups was Celtic Thunder. She is survived by daughters Sue Ann Croft of Bellingham, Lynette Ziegler of Custer, Diane Thomas of Seattle, and sons-in-law Kurt and Rick, William Thomas, grandchildren Michael, Heather Lee, Chris, Steph, Heather Ann, Aaron and Hannah, great grandchildren Lily, Coral, Melody, and Ella. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, her cousin Alice (sister in heart), son-in-law Larry, and great grandson Matthew. Services were held at Stafholt Nursing home, 456 C St., Blaine, WA, 98230 on Saturday, July 28. Chad Johnson officiated. Virginia’s final resting place is Enterprise Cemetery. The family would especially like to thank the staff of Stafholt for their excellent and loving care of her, and the staff of Hospice for their constant, attentive treatment. Gregory Wayne Vaughn June 11,1956 - July 21,2018 Beloved son, father, brother, uncle, friend and co-worker, Greg Vaughn passed away after a short illness at his home on July 21, 2018. Greg was born in Bellingham, WA and moved to Seattle as a child. He graduated Tyee High School in 1975, and went to work for United Airlines in 1976. He retired 35 years later. Greg is survived by daughter Erin Vaughn (Shane Cloud), son Keenan (Pamela) Vaughn and grandson Gunnarr Gregory Vaughn. He also leaves behind his mother June Vaughn, sister Linda (Richard) Pratt, brother Fredrick Vaughn (Sally Hale), niece Carrie (Joe) Kinan and grand-niece Hadley. He was very fond of his many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and co-workers at United Airlines. Greg loved being outdoors on his boat and riding his motorcycle. He also enjoyed camping with his kids and dogs, Friday and Rebel. Greg was proud of his Unitarian Universalist background, and his Icelandic heritage. Most of all he was elated to be called "Afi" when his grandson Gunnarr was born. A private service will be held in August for the immediate family. A larger event will be in Kent, WA on Saturday, October 6 at the Kent Eagles #362 from 2 to 9 p.m. Be strong, be kind, be loving to your fellow beings. Birch Bay Music Festival helps animals in need B y M at h e w R o l a n d This year’s 8th annual Birch Bay Music Festival is right around the corner. The event is scheduled to take place Friday through Sunday, August 3-5, at the previous Homestead Golf Course Grounds, 7878 Birch Bay Drive. The three-day festival will feature more than 20 bands and is a fundraiser for local animal rescue and welfare organizations. Guests can enjoy live music from 3 to 10 p.m. on Friday, from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday. This year’s festival will benefit two nonprofits dedicated to local dogs – Lean on Me Service Dogs, located in Bellingham, and Main Street Mutt Rescue, located in Ferndale. The festival is free to attend, but donations are encouraged. “The festival is a relaxing atmosphere available to all ages and well-mannered pets are welcome on leash,” said Birch Bay Music Festival president Sherri Roberts in an email. On Saturday, several bands will perform including Rocky Vaselino, Powerhouse, Alien Probe and Exit 266. The musical talent will continue Sunday with the band Heartbreaker and Heroes, a band consisting of teenagers. Tammy Pearce originally started the festival 10 years ago as a food drive for animals. Three years ago, Birch Bay Music Festival became a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. The event is now operated entirely by volunteers. One of the highlights of this year’s festival will be a raffle for a custom guitar made by local luthier Andy Beech and customized with artwork by Frank Dooley.

The guitar will be raffled off on Sunday after the last band performance around 8:30 p.m. Raffle tickets cost $10. Volunteers and donations are appreciated. Donations can be made through PayPal at birchbaymusicfestival.com/paymentdonate.html and volunteer positions are available from set up to tear down, Thursday to Monday.
