TThe weddings I look forward to are the weddings where I know the couple’s personalities will get to shine. Weddings where couples can let go of the obligatory this-is-how-a-wedding-should-look stock choices are so much more special and memorable. This year I attended two weddings that were vastly different, but both perfect.

I was a bridesmaid in a wedding at the Burke Museum of Natural History. Two of my and my husband’s best friends were married in front of the mastodon skeleton. It was a beautiful ceremony, and the reception was filled with personal touches, handmade paper flowers, places to doodle and amazing food. Knowing this couple, we looked forward to discovering what these little personal surprises would be all year. Everyone’s speeches told tales that reiterated the same qualities of kindness, generosity and love. It felt like their village had come together, and that feeling of community was gorgeous and so telling of who they are as a couple.

The other wedding was my sister’s elopement, which was intimate, beautiful and touching. This couple, more private and introverted, chose a ceremony that ensured they could truly shine. The audience, made up of only family, meant that they could be unfiltered and vulnerable in a way that they wouldn’t have been able to in front of a big crowd. It was simple and beautiful. There was mist on the lake behind them, and they let their love sparkle without extras that didn’t fit who they are. The vows were beautiful and the families celebrated with cake and snacks before the couple took a ferry to the islands for an intimate honeymoon. The picturesque elopement was true to who they are as a couple.

All this is to say that the only way you can go wrong planning your wedding is to be inauthentic. Who you are, the circumstances, setting and people who make you most comfortable, what you like, these are the things yo u should be considering while you settle into your wedding planning journey.

Getting Started

tThe question has been popped, the answer was yes and now it is time to get down to brass tacks. Or rather, it’s time to get down to gingham and dahlias and color schemes. A lot of time, work and decisions go into every wedding, whether it is bare bones or grand and complex. Here are the things to focus on post-engagement.

1. Take some time to enjoy being engaged. The time that you are engaged is special and exciting, and though it will certainly involve wedding planning, it isn’t just about planning the wedding. Your engagement is about you as a couple, your love and your commitment. Revel in those things.

2. Tell important people personally before blasting the news on social media. Even if important members of the family, like grandparents, are not on social media, they are more likely to hear it from a third party once it’s public. Once you put that telltale ring picture on social media, people will assume that it’s fair game to share the news.

3. Begin a basic budget outline. No need to hammer out all the details the second the ring is sized and slipped on. Instead, figure out what you can contribute from savings, what percentage of your paycheck you are willing to set aside in the coming months and note any external contributions that you know of, such as help from parents or future in-laws.

4. Discuss the big picture of the wedding with your partner. You don’t have to start compromising or deciding just yet but be sure to discuss whether you want a lot of guests or few, a summer wedding or a winter one and possible themes and locations, especially if your families are from different places. Make sure that you both understand each other’s priorities and wants, so that you are on the same page when it is time to have tough discussions and make decisions.

5. Look at photographers. Engagement shoots are great for social media, save-the-dates and for your wedding website. Deciding which photographer you want for your wedding can be a tough call with so many different styles of photography. An engagement shoot can be a great opportunity to work with a photographer and see if you mesh well before committing to having them do the whole wedding. If you do find the perfect photographer, ask them if they have packages or deals that include engagement photos.

6. Browse. For everything from the dress to choosing the maid of honor, just take your time. It is easy to get caught up in the first dress that seems right or to start handing out titles like bridesmaid as the inspirations strike you. Don’t make any choices that you can’t change right off

the bat. Asking a friend to be your maid of honor and then finding out that your little sister wanted that role more than anything will put you in an awkward situation and nobody will walk away totally happy. Talk out your thoughts before you announce your choices or put down deposits.

The SNEAKER MOMENT

nWhether or not you should change into sneakers (and when) is a typical consideration for today’s bride.

Many brides opt for tennis shoes from the beginning and are stylishly comfortable from their first step onto the aisle until their last step from the dance floor into their Uber. Others opt to change before they step into the reception, and still others just keep their wedding sneakers nearby in case of an unexpected ache in their arches.

The thing is, while you may not plan on your feet hurting in your wedding heels, isn’t it best to be prepared?

Choosing the right bridal sneaker (second-look or otherwise) is largely a matter of taste. Perhaps you are the kind of bride who knows her sneaker brand loyalty and thinks this is a very silly article. Of course, you will have a pair of white high-top Reeboks ready to go. But maybe, this article finds you at a backup shoe style impasse. There are plenty of options and considerations so let’s explore them.

Color

First things first, determine if you want white shoes or colorful shoes. If your dress hides your shoes entirely, they could be your something blue or a pop of color

If you chose white, consider bringing a color swatch from your dress to the shoe store to match shades. Material

Options for base material in sneakers range from canvas to leather to suede and beyond, and like any wedding shoe, you can choose sneakers tricked out with any manner of wedding bling. Pearl, rhinestone, sequins and lace are all on the table. Consider the material of your dress, but also the material of any accessories, like shawls, hair accessories and jewelry. If you have a sparkly hairpiece, maybe rhinestone sneakers will tie your look together.

Sentiment

Maybe you’re not much of a sneakers person and the second you started looking into the world of casual wedding footwear you became overwhelmed with options. Maybe you could care less about sneaker brands or looks. Wearing a sneaker brand your fiancé grew up loving or a white, elevated version of a style of shoe you used to wear when you two first met may create a beautiful post-ceremony surprise. Those you-know-me-so-well

surprises create beautiful memories (and very cute pictures).

If you are teetering between “I want to wear my wedding heels from start to finish” and “I’m not sure my feet can cope with high heels I haven’t fully broken in for 4 to 6 hours” it would be best to have some sneakers on hand as a just-in-case emergency asset.

White sneakers are cuter and more comfortable than dollar store flip flops, and it will pay off in pictures to have put thought into what your wedding look looks like with your emergency footwear.

Whether sneakers are your first, your last, and your everything or just your backup, remember to break them in (preferably inside, away from mud, grass stains and puddles) to avoid blisters and sore feet when you walk out of your wedding venue and into the rest of your life.

When coming up with a wedding budget, it might be tempting to take a few shortcuts. Whether it’s your cousin who wants to utilize their amateur piano skills at the ceremony, or the friend who offers to take your photos with their new camera, think twice before taking the easy route.

With professionals, you have options, you can look through portfolios and read reviews, you have the right to be picky. Their past work lets you know whether you can expect excellence. This day is one you’ll always remember, after all, and so it is important that all the details, big and small, are exactly how you want them. thing or, even worse, end up unhappy with the way things turn out.

tThe dress is draped on the hanger, the bouquets are in vases and the rings lie safely tucked away in the best man’s breast pocket. It’s time. For many, at this moment, their mind is racing, completing a final mental checklist, but you aren’t doing that. You’re thinking about how excited you are to see your fiancé at the end of the aisle. You don’t have to go over any checklist on the day-of because you delegated tasks to all of your helpers in advance.

Make a plan ahead of the big day, delegate responsibilities in an organized and fair fashion, and find yourself checklist-free on your way down the aisle.

How to coordinate helpers: Make a chart. Use an online spreadsheet or write it out by hand. List the tasks that need to be handled dayof and write in who is in charge of each task.

Greeting and coordinating with caterers, photographers, the officiant and other hired personnel as they arrive, organizing bridesmaids, managing the betrotheds’ phones (someone will call to say they’re running late or need directions), self-care reminders (pass out snacks and water bottles while getting ready), holder of the emergency

How to make sure everyone is on the same page:

If you made a digital chart, share it with everyone who has agreed to a task. If you handwrote it, take a picture and text it to the wedding party group chat. Print or take copies of the list to the wedding venue and post them where each group is getting ready (this is a task you may want to assign to a helper).

The asking itself:

Always ask people if they are willing to do extra tasks. Be gracious if someone doesn’t think they have the bandwidth to do extra tasks on the big day; you can always ask someone else.

Consider letting everyone pick the tasks that they are most comfortable with. Share the chart over a group text or email and allow participants to add their name next to tasks that appeal to them.

TIP:

Don’t forget to say thank you when your team makes your day a little easier, no matter how small their task or favor.

It can be easy to get caught up in the trap of what vows are “supposed” to sound like. Let’s throw that word “supposed” over our left shoulders with some salt for luck and forget about it. Vows are personal. Pretty words and elegant sentences are not important. When writing

moments and even hard moments that taught you something. Practice saying the words and see which stories move you most. Write those ones down. Make notes about the promises that you want to make. Of course, promise to be there for better or for worse, but you can also promise to be there through the chronic backseat driving and latenight ice cream runs. It’s your marriage, what promises do you want to make and keep?

Tell the story about the moment you knew this was the real deal. Say what you are looking forward to about marriage – that’s going to be different for everybody. Bring up adventures, laugh-

ter, support or whatever it is that makes your relationship so wonderful and important to you that you ended up here, getting married.

Take notes in a way that works for you. Some people like bullet points, while others need their vows written out word for word. After you get all your ideas out, figure out how you want to string them together.

If you can’t figure out the right order of the stories and promises that you want to include, try writing each idea on a separate index card, lay them all out on the floor and arrange them in different ways until they fit together the way you want. Then number the cards, so you don’t forget the order if they get mixed up.

Vows are simply a conversation between you and your partner, so don’t stress about them too much. Just make sure that you say what you mean and you mean what you say.

U• Use a QR Code to link to a third-party website where guests can upload the photos they take at your wedding. Make sure you find a photo upload site that allows people to upload easily and directly from their phones.

• Keep your wedding website simple. Stick to the basics, like day-of details, directions, online RSVP, and registry link.

• Online RSVPs are a must whether you have a wedding website or not. Include a QR code linking to your online RSVP tracker.

• Put guests’ addresses into a digital spreadsheet so that you can easily print off sticker address labels for save-the-dates, invitations, thank you notes and future holiday cards.

• Include charging stations in your reception area. Have multiple types of chargers available at a a location in the reception venue.

• Digital wedding guestbooks are a great way to keep track of special dayof messages. Choose to request either video messages or typed messages. Use a QR code prominently displayed to direct guests to fill out a guestbook form with their name and message or upload their video message to a shared folder.

Thank you note tips

tThank you notes can seem like a big mountain to climb after the hubbub of the wedding has died down and you have returned from a relaxing honeymoon. Especially for a big wedding, the thank yous can be time consuming. Here’s how to make the process efficient and less overwhelming.

• Use a photo from the wedding as the artwork on your thank you card.

• Write down who gave you what as you open gifts and cards. Make a running note in your phone of who gave you what starting with the first card that comes in the mail. It is much less stressful to write your way through a list, checking people off as you go than to try to remember later.

• Pre-address envelopes. Either have the addresses printed out as stickers

ahead of time, or if you are planning on handwriting, address an envelope for each guest who has RSVPed when you have downtime before the wedding.

• Don’t overwrite. Burn out happens quickly when each thank you note is paragraphs long. Follow our simple thank-you note format for short, but personal thank you notes.

How to tie a BOW TIE

1. Hang one end 1.5 inches longer than the other.

2. Take longer end and cross over shorter end.

Some bow ties come with adjustable straps in the back. Tighten these last.

3. Pass longer end up and under the neck loop. Put over shoulder until step 5. 5

Fold short end (a) in half to make the front loop of the bow. Then pull the loop parallel to neckline (image 5).

Fold long end over with tail toward your chin. Then, leading with folded edge, pass loop between first bow and neck loop.

7. Pull on both ends of the bow to tighten and adjust.

How to tie A TIE

1. Place tie around your neck. Make sure your shirt is fully buttoned with the collar flipped up. The wide side should hang about a foot lower than the narrow side.

2. Cross the wide side over top of the narrow side.

3. Bring the wide side around the back of the narrow side and over the front again. The wide side will end up in back. Use your fingers to hold the knot you have formed in place.

4. Pull the wide edge through the top of the neck loop and feed it through the knot you’ve created.

5. Hold the narrow end of the tie securely and slide the knot up to tighten.

M• Do engagement photos! Engagement photos are a great opportunity to connect with your intended photographer or to try out a photographer you are thinking about booking for your big day. These photos will come in handy for your wedding website and for savethe-date cards.

• Pick an engagement photo session location that means something to you and your betrothed. Picking a special setting will make the photos that much more special and your personalities will shine when the environment is meaningful to you.

• Send out save-the-dates. Sending save-the-dates will help you to solidify your guest list early and when it’s time

to collect those RSVPs, guests will already know if they will be attending or not. Setting your date early has other perks as well, including vendor availability and lower travel/accommodation costs for out-of-town guests.

• Browse wedding bands. Picking your wedding band may seem like just a matter of taste and what looks good, but it’s important to consider your lifestyle as well. A bulkier ring with a raised setting may be a great choice for someone who works in an office, but for someone who’s job requires rubber gloves or who loves being outdoors, this may prove to be a hinderance dayto-day. Pick a ring that looks amazing and works in your normal.

• Totes and other organizational supplies. Especially if you have a small home, you’re going to need some help making good use of your space and organizing all of your gifts.

• Supplies for your hobbies.

Do you love camping? Include a tent or a camp stove. Are the two of you both into music? Register for a new record player or a set of quality speakers. This is your registry after all, and it’s there to set you up for your life together.

• Gift cards.

These are great contingency gifts. When you realize what you forgot to register for, you’ll be glad to have received a few of these. This is even more crucial if you’re getting married far from where you live, either at a destination or close to your families; you won’t want to cart a bunch of gifts home on a plane or road trip.

Alternatives

• Honeymoon fund.

If you don’t need any physical items, you can always have a honeymoon fund option, allowing people to give to your honeymoon experience.

• Charitable donations.

If you’ve already got most of what you need, asking for donations to your favorite charity is a generous way of spreading the joy. If you’re uncomfortable asking people to cut checks, try asking people to donate items. A summer wedding is a great opportunity to ask guests to bring school supply donations. Fall weddings are a great time to ask for winter coat and clothing donations. Winter weddings are a great opportunity to ask people to participate in a holiday toy drive.

Registering forEXPERIENCE

If you’ve started making a registry and found yourself stumped for what to put on it, an experience registry might be a better fit.

iRegister for museum memberships, honeymoon experiences, or subscriptions for your first year of marriage.

Honeymoon registries

Put extra honeymoon experiences on your registry. If you’re honeymooning in Hawaii book your tickets and your room, but list out all of the activities

you’re hoping to do, like snorkeling, a fancy dinner on the beach, luau tickets, whale watching etc. Guests can contribute money towards different activities or buy an activity outright. If you are honeymooning in the Pacific Northwest, consider NW Sailing Adventures, a trip with Washington Llamas, or tree or rock climbing with AdventureTerra.

Memberships and passes

List out memberships you would use often together, such as memberships

to local museums, zoos or aquariums. Depending on where you live and where you spend your weekends there are tons of options in the Pacific Northwest. The Seattle Art Museum, The Burke Museum of Natural History, The Heritage Flight Museum, The Whatcom Museum all offer memberships for two people for between 90 and 120 dollars per year.

Subscriptions

If you like a nice monthly surprise, floral subscriptions, coffee subscriptions and cider, beer or wine subscriptions can usually be sourced locally.

Subscriptions don’t have to be snack boxes or magazines. Pacific Northwest Ballet offers subscriptions as well as mini-subscriptions to their seasons.

Event tickets

One-off tickets to shows are also a

great thing to add to an experience registry. Great options that are local to the Pacific Northwest are:

Sports: Mariners tickets, Seattle Kraken tickets, Seattle Torrent tickets, Seahawks tickets

Music: Pacific Northwest Opera, Seattle Symphony, Bellingham Symphony Orchestra, or Mount Baker Theatre’s Broadway series

Comedy: The Upfront Theater, Laughs Comedy Club, Julia’s on Broadway – Le Faux Playhouse

Tickets for touring shows, bands and comedians are plentiful in the Pacific Northwest, and your favorite band, comedian or Broadway show may be coming to the area this year.

If you don’t want to fill a registry with physical items, let your guests contribute to making your honeymoon spectacular or let them contribute to filling your first year of marriage with life-long memories. Don’t let tradition hold you back from creating a registry that fits your lifestyle.
