Arts and music festival expands its schedule By Meg Olson The Point Roberts Arts and Music Festival will feature music, dance and fun throughout the whole month of August. Relocating to the end of Gulf Road and partnering with Kiniski’s Reef this year, the festival will take off as usual on the first weekend in August with a mix of music,
dance, art and a variety of wares for sale. The event begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 4 with the always popular middle eastern Rahma Dancers. The afternoon and evening will offer an eclectic mix from local and visiting musicians including the Point Roberts Winds ensemble, local favorites Craig Jack and the Jackalopes, and Canadian singer-songwriter Delaney Rose.

The first hospital district meeting since Unity Care NW’s announcement that it will not be renewing its service contact with the district lured more than its regular contingent of residents, many of whom expressed concern with the future of the Point Roberts clinic. The meeting was held July 12, a week later than its regular schedule due to the Fourth of July holiday. After board chair Dick Williams opened the floor for public comments, former district commissioner Robin Nault said she wanted to reiterate comments made in a statement by district superintendent Barbara Wayland regarding the Unity Care NW decision in which she had said that the district had considered the loss of the service provider. “I just wanted to reassure the public that we did consider being separate from Unity Care,” Nault said, going on to laud nurse practitioner Natalié Davidson for having “done some wonderful things and had been appreciated by many members of the public.” Former nurse practitioner and fire commissioner Virginia Lester also asked to address the board. “I want to go back 16 years, I was recruited to open up a clinic here … I spent 10 years building and working at that clinic. I had a phone call today that really upset me which is really why I’m here. [The person] said that there were people in the community who were saying that I wanted the clinic to close. Let me tell you – that is the last thing I want and if that kind of information is being spread about, it’s the commissioners’ responsibility and fiduciary duty to be sure that the right message gets out to the public … We talked about running the clinic by ourselves two years before I retired and it’s a big, big job and responsibility to take on. But I think that’s possible. … I want everyone to realize that I have not badmouthed this clinic and I have not badmouthed Natalié and I will not. I want this clinic to be successful and if you can’t figure out a way to keep it open that would be a real sad thing.” Lester concluded by stating that she had no desire at her age to be involved in running the clinic. They will play a variety of instruments including the Charango, a ten-string instrument resembling the ukulele; the Kultrun, a drum from the Mapuche people in the south of Chile; the Quena, a wooden flute from the Andes, and guitar. They sing in the indigenous languages of the Mapuche people, the Aymara, the Easter Islanders, as well as in Spanish. This will be an event you won’t want to miss!

Letters To The Editor The Editor: If it takes a village to raise child, it also truly takes a community to host a successful Garden Tour! On July 15, the Point Roberts Garden Club, with the help of many other members of the community, hosted the 15th Point Roberts Garden Tour. We welcomed about 540 visitors as they toured eight varied gardens. Four hundred of these guests also came to the community center where they enjoyed tea, cookies, music, and perhaps a peek at the historical society display. All reports that I have heard indicate that our visitors had an enjoyable day. On behalf of the Garden Club, I extend a special thanks to the garden owners who worked especially hard beforehand to keep their garden watered and weeded, so that they could proudly share their gardens with our visitors. Thank you to all of our greeters who welcomed each visitor at each garden. Special thanks also go to Chris Cameron and her hard working team who decorated the community center, set up tables and chairs, and kept the cookies, water, and tea flowing in order to offer refreshments and a respite to our visitors. The tables set up in the shade of the willow tree and adorned with bouquets in teapots offered a pleasant venue to enjoy the music provided by the Point Roberts Winds and we thank them for sharing their musical talent. Thank you to all of the cookie-bakers on the Point who allowed us to offer home-baked goodies along with the tea. We thank the Point Roberts Historical Society for opening and staffing their room where they shared their displays with any interested guests. I would like to especially thank Jennifer Urquhart for handling all of our publicity. We can tell what a great job she did from the number of people who attended from all over the lower mainland. Once again, we were fortunate to have Scott Hackleman design the beautiful graphics on our posters, ads and tickets. Thank you, Scott! We sold raffle tickets on a garden-themed quilt, and were delighted that long-time Point Robert resident Sally Roberts was the lucky winner.
We also want to thank our ticket vendors, Nielson’s Building Center and Auntie Pam’s Country Store in Point Roberts, and Harris Nursery and Blue Door Interiors in Ladner, as well as Flowers Beautiful in Tsawwassen. Once again it was a pleasure to work over the past several months with all of the Garden Tour committee! In total, we had over 100 volunteers from our community helping us on a hot, sunny day in July. And we thank all of you for contributing to the success of our Garden Tour! Jane Donaldson, chair Point Roberts The Editor: Last month’s cover photo highlighted a group of people titled “the folks who brought back the 4th of July.” The first since 1916. Wow, I thought, 60 years of living in Point Roberts and no Fourth of July festivities till 1976? A lot of things must have been happening in those 60 years. I have no idea why no one celebrated for 59 years but am grateful that a civic-minded group decided our nation’s 200th birthday needed to be celebrated. Thank you, Ruby White, for organizing the reunion. What a fun time it must have been for everyone to reminisce. We take for granted the things we expect will happen, like a Fourth of July parade, but we also tend to forget that it takes a lot of people behind the scenes to make it happen. I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the behind the scenes people who have made so many things happen year after year that we have all thoroughly enjoyed. Renee Coe Point Roberts The Editor:
Having toured so many of the featured gardens on the Point Roberts Garden Tour over these many years, I am once again delighted by this excellent event. It is always a highlight of the (now biennial) season. How amazing that we are invited to enjoy these gems of local gardens, in addition to being entertained while having tea with yummies under the willow trees. All this for a nominal cost and thanks to the fine efforts of so many volunteers. My sincere appreciation to all who contribute to make this event continue. Thank you! Dee Rothwell New Westminster, B.C. The Editor: As an artist, I have always been a big fan of the U.S. Not anymore! I grew up on military bases in Europe, spent a lot of time playing sports and hanging out with the New York Yankees. In the ‘40s Americans and Canadians were heroes that saved Europe from the Nazis and the Russians. I have crisscrossed the U.S. many times and graduated with a Master’s Degree from Western Washington University. When I relocated my gallery and studio in Vancouver, I was thrilled to purchase a property near South Beach. I was helping my partner Christina Lake in her mentoring of seniors in their pursuits of the arts. Christina teaches painting, drawing and pottery. Recently, I was harangued for 20 hours at the border. One of the students was also harangued; all students are seniors citizens and were stressed by the experience. I was even told not to do a mural at the Shell Station. I was willing to do a $50,000 mural for free to support the community in Point Roberts. I was told at the border I could not paint a mural as I am classified as an “alien.” I am banned from the U.S. for five years and have to pay a $1,000 fine. I refuse to pay the fine; I am selling my Point Roberts studio and with a heavy heart I intend to never set foot on American soil again. Brian Scott Vancouver

The analysis of the results had been delayed for a number of reasons including Komusi’s resignation and the recruitment and training of her replacement, Barbara Wayland, and the resignation and replacement of commissioner Robin Nault by Stephen Falk. Wayland addressed the Unity Care NW decision to both the board and the audience. “In its decision, the board of Unity Care directed Unity Care to provide services for up to six months into 2019 if we request that they do so. While we are hopeful that we can accomplish a changeover within the timeframe of the current contract, we also know it is a big job and will likely take more than six months. Therefore, we are prepared to ask for this continuance if necessary,” she said, adding “research into options is beginning.” Continuing, Wayland said, “The clinic remains open with the same hours, services, and staff, and it is the intention of the hospital district that there be a smooth transition to a new service provider and that the people of Point Roberts can con-

tinue to depend on the clinic for health care on into the future. The community has a vital role in the success of this. Simply stated, we need people to continue to utilize clinic services. Potential providers need to see that we need and use our clinic [and] that we depend on healthcare being available right here in Point Roberts. This is my biggest take home point and what I would hope you will share with others in the community. I am sure you have many questions, and to be honest, it is early days yet and we are just beginning work on the answers. Some of you may have come tonight because you received a letter from Unity about the impending end of the contract and have questions about what that means. I hope my comments have made things somewhat clearer. Others have heard rumors and comments out in the community and are not sure what to believe. I salute all of you for taking the time to come here looking for information and I invite you to future meetings. By working together and supporting our clinic, we can continue to have healthcare here in our town,” she concluded. actually have “to touch” marijuana to be considered part of the pot business. Canadian companies that provide financing to U.S. growers, producers or retailers or sell greenhouses or irrigation systems or other U.S. cannabis companies can be considered to be profiting off the avails of the marijuana industry and are subject to bans against travel to the U.S. Saunders believes that recent Custom and Border Protection guidance sent to ports of entry is what is driving current enforcement action and believes that, in some cases, individuals involved in the business have been previously researched and “flagged” for attention as soon as they arrive at a U.S. port as opposed to being detained following routine questioning during entry procedures. Citing figures that project up to 40 percent of Canadians will try marijuana following its legalization in October, Saunders likens the Canadian border to the southern one and says that Canadian legalization will create “an invisible wall” on the 49th parallel. In the last few weeks, Saunders has

Parks board considers building uses With the library settling into its new home, the park district board is considering requests from local groups to use community center space. The historical society and the park district are negotiating an agreement for the former library to become a display room and archive area. “The old children’s room would become an archive room open to historical society members or for research purposes,” said historical society president Jessica McVey. Today the historical society’s collection of documents and photos is in attics, basements or under beds. “We won’t even really know what we have until we get it all together,” McVey said. The historical displays and quilts currently in the small room would be moved into the current library after the historical society and park district make upgrades to the space. McVey said they hope to enrich the display with other photographs and displays. “We think people in town have things they would be willing to share if there was a place to display them,” she said. Historical society members would open
the room at regular times, including senior lunches and some weekend hours. They would also use the space for special events such as genealogy help sessions, McVey said. “There’s so much we could do with the extra space,” McVey said. While the park board members were unanimous in supporting the historical society, there is disagreement about approving a food bank request for storage space at the community center. The matter will be on the agenda for the Monday, August 13 park district meeting.

PRCAC endorses gas tax expenditures
Members of the Point Roberts Community Advisory Committee (PRCAC) have unanimously endorsed the concept of an 80-20 split of annual gas tax revenues to fund big and small projects. The current balance of the transportation benefit district (TBD) fund for Point Roberts stands at just under $1 million and is estimated to increase by approximately $20,000 per month, said chair Jeff Christo• U.S. green cards / naturalization pher at the July 10 PRCAC meeting. “That • Work / investor visas has been steadily increasing given the gap • Denied entry waivers in the fuel prices between Tsawwassen and Point Roberts,” he said. Leonard D.M. Saunders, Attorney at Law The committee agreed on a procedure for vetting potential smaller projects, including consulting with the boards of the three-member organizations: Point Roberts Registered Voters’ Association, Point Roberts Taxpayers’ Association and Point Roberts Chamber of Commerce. “No monies of that 20 percent will go toward projects public works should be paying for,” Christopher said. Once PRCAC has selected a project it will need to go before county council, which serves as the governing board of the TBD. On June 19, acting on a PRCAC recommendation, county council approved establishing expenditure authority for TBD funds to be used for the maintenance

of the Tyee Drive streetscape installed as a collaboration between county public works and the Point Roberts Garden Club. Christopher, speaking as the representative for the taxpayers’ association, said they had “a long list” of smaller projects, and on the top of it was “the completion of the long-stalemated Lighthouse Park continuum,” a walking path along Marine Drive. For more substantial projects, Christopher said they would like to look into the possibility of widening Benson Road, adding a sidewalk east of Tyee Drive and the replacement of the Maple Beach seawall with a natural berm similar to what is planned for Birch Bay. Audience member Samantha Scholefield said she was happy to see a framework for putting the gas tax funds to use. “I’m very much in support of this idea because the gas tax fund has been under discussion for 10 years with no action, so it’s good to see some action.” The TBD was created in 1991. According to the state auditor, there have been no expenditures in the fund between 2010 and now except for $20,623 in 2013. While the garbage question may not be on the agenda for the Point Roberts Community Advisory Committee (PRCAC) anymore, community members speaking in open session are continuing to push for a lower minimum service level. ry garbage pickup, they also approved a minimum service collection level for all developed properties in Point Roberts: two 32-gallon cans per month or 26 cans per year. “I strongly believe the mandate that has gone forward to county council is an over service,” Samantha Scholefield said at the July 10 PRCAC meeting. Scholefield said Vancouver, with a 1 percent vacancy rate, has a 26 can per year minimum service level. “There is absolutely no way Point Roberts requires the same basic level of service as Vancouver,” she said. Allison Calder said curbside collection at the minimum service level approved by county council would theoretically generate 700 tons of garbage more than the current hauler Cando Recycling and Disposal reported removing from all sources to the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (WUTC) for 2017. Reducing the minimum service level to twelve 32-gallon cans per years, she said, “would account for 75 percent of the total garbage produced in Point Roberts in 2017, not counting construction waste.” It should represent a sufficient increase in waste volume to assure vendor stability and stop illegal disposal, she added. Scholefield, Calder and others in the audience want to see the minimum service level set at either one 32- or 20-gallon can per month. “I’ve never been given a solid answer for how this level of service was determined (a 32-gallon can every-other-week),” Scholefield said. The level of service was decided on by PRCAC members at their October 2017 meeting. Jeff Hegedus with the Whatcom
New websites launch There are two new websites to help stay up-to-date on Point Roberts happenings. The Point Roberts Emergency Preparedness Group has launched a new website at prepgroup.org which is rich with information about what the group does and how Point Roberts residents can prepare for and respond to an emergency. The group also has an active Facebook page that shares information about what the group is up to as well as general information about emergency preparedness. Community members lobbying the Point Roberts Community Advisory Committee and the county to reduce the level of service for mandatory curbside collection have launched a website at garbageinpr.com to educate the public about the new garbage requirements and why they want to see them changed.
County health department said that the difference in cost per property between one and two 32-gallon cans per month according the current tariff approved by the WUTC was $4. Committee members agreed the higher level of service was appropriate given the minimal cost difference to meet the goals of the solid waste initiative: reducing illegal disposal, addressing odor and vermin issues, and ensuring vendor stability. “Maybe my house puts out two cans a month and yours puts out two but we’re all contributing to a system that serves our community,” said committee member Linda Hughes. PRCAC members listened, but did not indicate any intention of revisiting the minimum service levels or other aspects of the council approved plan. “When this (eliminating exemptions to mandatory garbage collection) was initially brought to us two years ago it started as an idea that we asked the community if they would be interested in,” Hughes said. “There was a sensible pattern of input and a lot of changing of the plan. This is something we made together, all of us, and I’m sorry if there are some people who came late to the game and felt they weren’t represented.” Contacted after the meeting, Hegedus said, “Things are moving forward with improving service levels up there, including our submission of a significant supplemental budget request to make capital improvements to the transfer station this year, independent of the curbside issue.” PRCAC has another month in their self-imposed timeline to recreate the disbanded solid waste subcommittee following the committee’s own template: one representative from each of the three member organizations and two at-large representatives. PRCAC member Keith Glading said so far they had received only one application for the at-large positions and Christopher encouraged Scholefield, Calder and other former members of the subcommittee to reapply. “I would love to have you onboard,” he said.

Circle of Care appeals for help By Annelle Norman One of the challenges that Point Roberts residents continue to face is having insurance pay for long term in-home-care. Insurance companies and Medicare currently only offer payment if service is provided by certified home care aides who are employed by a private agency. Unfortunately, the various private agencies in the county cannot send employees to Point Roberts due to the constraints of commuting and crossing two borders. Medicaid, however, will pay a client designated caregiver as long as they take the training and get certified with the state. Circle of Care hopes to
find a workable solution with those payment providers and/or one of the agencies so that all residents can take advantage of paid, professional in-home-care. Circle of Care is currently working with several residents and we need more volunteers to: provide rides to doctor and clinic appointments, provide meals, do light housework or gardening chores, run errands, provide pet care, etc. Please give yourself the joy of feeling helpful by providing needed help and support. If you’d like to volunteer, please leave your name and number on the Circle of Care message service on 360/945-5222 or by sending an email to prcircleofcare@gmail.com.

Friends of the Library By Judy Ross I’m thinking the biggest event of August is the official grand opening of the new Point Roberts library, the most beautiful building in Point Roberts! Of course, you might think my judgment on that matter is somewhat biased. I confess. But it is a beautiful building, a wonderful and impressive upgrade of an essential community institution; it is funded by this community, its members’ friends and relatives, businesses, visitors and four foundations, with help from Whatcom County Library Services. The grand opening will begin with the ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 11. If you can’t come to the ribbon cutting (and the parking may be a challenge), come sometime later during the day and let us all celebrate together with cake, tea and coffee; let’s congratulate one another for having arrived at this day after seven years of planning, fundraising and finally construction and furnishing of the Point Roberts Library. A feeling of community is important
in such a small place with little governance. There is no-one here – no executive or mayor or chief honcho of any sort – who is officially tasked with ensuring that the community’s interests are attended to and put first. When a need arises, it is the community that must step forward to see how our communal life can be improved. As FOPRL’s head fundraiser for this new library, I am eternally grateful for everyone who stepped up to help us achieve this goal. But there are other needs and other community organizations who see to other needs and other community interests who also need that kind of support. I urge everyone who lives here, full time or part time, to make community a part of their own lives and to support other projects as they arise. Anything that makes the Point a better place to live enhances all our lives. Thanks for reading this column over the years and thanks to the All Point Bulletin for providing us with the space to reach out to you.

s The dock at Lighthouse Marine Park was taken out of the water on July 25 after park employees noticed evidence that the structure was failing. Photo by Bennett Blaustein
The dock rocks no more The Lighthouse Marine Park dock has failed once again. In a July 23 press release, the Whatcom County Parks and Recreation Department advised the dock would be removed during the week of July 23 because “multiple segments of the dock are displaying signs of metal fatigue and weld failure.” The dock is being removed as “a preventative measure” and to allow a “thorough conditions assessment,” according to the release. There is no timeline for the dock’s reinstallation. The current dock is only in its second year of service after a redesign and remanufacture in 2016 following a failure the year before. In that instance, the dock was removed in July 2015 after only one month in service due to a “material failure” that was linked to faulty engineering. The county paid $27,000 for materials with the dock manufacturer Chinook Docks throwing in
the labor, and the contractor HBHansen installing the upgraded dock for free. The previous wooden dock lasted for 16 years before it was removed in 2009 due to its degrading condition. The park had no dock for six years until the current ill-fated “improved” metal dock was installed. Mark Robbins, president of the Point Roberts Taxpayers Association, left a scathing comment on Nextdoor about the dock removal: “So, once again, no dock. Goes well with no wind shelters on the vastly reduced (but nicely repaired) boardwalk. The whale watching platform at Lighthouse Park is a distant memory (never so much as an announcement or explanation to the public regarding its removal (presumably for safety reasons). All this brought to you by the county administration that failed utterly to embrace and seriously support the proposal and significant partial private funding for a proper lighthouse in Lighthouse Park.”

Taxpayers annual general meeting – less fun, more business? B y P a t G r u bb Despite attracting a roomful of attendees on July 18, this year’s annual general meeting of the Point Roberts Taxpayers Association was noticeably subdued compared to last year’s, perhaps due to the fact that there was no bar this go-around. This year’s speaker Whidbey Telecom chief marketing officer Chris McKnight was also
less polarizing than the 2017 pick, state senator Doug Ericksen. McKnight, who hails from Bucks County, Pennsylvania and comes with a hefty resume, has worked for Whidbey Telecom for about a year. He described how the company goes about setting capital plans into place, beginning first with a customer survey and feedback process. His first visit to Point Roberts was on February 18, where he experienced firsthand the mismatch between driving a stick-shift during a surprise 6-inch dump of snow. His take-away from that visit? Businesses and residents wanted faster internet speeds. As a consequence, the company has already begun rolling out fiber optic cables to provide faster service. The first phase, scheduled to be completed by the end of the summer, will see fiber optic cables installed down Tyee Drive and along Gulf Road as far as the new library. The first customer to hook up to the service, the

Whidbey Telecom has yet to determine where they will go next – one possible extension would be along Benson Road to the school/firehall/health clinic/water district office complex. In regular business, the association held its annual election of board members. The unexpired term (2018-19) of a regular director position, a vacancy created by the recent death of Wayne Knowles was filled by Heidi Baxter; three board positions were
filled by Robin Nault, incumbents Mark Robbins and Jennifer Urquhart (three-year terms, 2018-2021); and incumbents Dave Ellis, Pat Harper, Pam Sarkissian, and Steve Wolff were elected to serve as alternate directors 2018-2019. The board meets on the second Wednesday of each month; the next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on August 8 in the community center. The board will elect officers of the association for the coming year at that time.

By Peg Keenleyside Some 30 odd years ago I visited a garden in England called Sissinghurst Castle Garden which had been bought in the 1930s by the then famous writer and socially risqué,Vita Sackville-West. The garden was built among the ruins of a centuries-old red brick manor house, laid out in a series of interconnected ‘rooms’ that revealed intimate visual and scented pleasures as you walked between them. It was an experience that inspired me, as great art will, informing much of what I was then just learning about gardening. So it was with some nostalgia and a good deal of anticipation that I returned to Sissinghurst last month to re-visit the lessons left to us by Sackville-West. Vita was part of a modernist movement in the 1930s that was pushing back against conventional notions of how to plant a garden. That convention relied much on lots of bright colored summer annuals raised in ‘hothouses,’ planted out in late spring, often around island beds of individual roses. At Sissinghurst, Vita began using perennial plants as the mainstays of her garden rooms. What she advocated was the idea of planting perennials in masses – in a minimum of threes – so that over the years as the plants mature, you get a spectacular visual effect. That effect can be because of the repetition of leaf shapes, height, or, famously at Sissinghurst, in the use of the same color range for every plant chosen for a garden room. The most talked-about room in Sackville-West’s garden has been her ‘White Room’ in the courtyard outside the house she slept in. Here she planted peonies, climbing roses, irises, hydrangeas, clematis, all with white or white hued flowers that would glow under moonlight. The companion perennial plantings, artemisia, sea holly, astilbe and others all share foliage color in grey-green shades; the perfect foil for big, white blooms. Visiting the garden again 30 years later I was surprised to see that Vita’s ‘White Garden’ has devolved into a cottage garden-style room. Gone was the huge white-flowering clematis Montana covering an old red brick wall. Instead, the beds were dominated by self-seeding perennials. In the extreme heat that England is experiencing this summer, the white roses were all peaked and blowsy and looking for a good pruning. My regret at the loss of this most quintessential gardener’s vision of my earlier visit was tempered by the knowledge that big, artfully tended gardens are enormously expensive to maintain. The new art of gardening has incorporated low mainte-
nance methods (like self-seeding plants) because very few of us can afford garden help any longer. Even though it’s visited by some 200,000 people a year, Sissinghurst employs just three full time gardeners. And I remind myself that one of the exciting aspects of working with living materials is that a garden is always evolving. Working with that reality of life, building on from what was, adapting your initial vision, is, in part, the very central pleasure of gardening. One of my other takeaways from my young gardener’s visit to this garden was Vita’s ability to create intimate visual vignettes within a larger room; often using recycled materials. At the end of a long vista a statue is flanked by two humble clay pots. An old, stone, animal watering trough is planted with a cascade of small flowering perennials. This kind of easy, ‘visual moment’ garden creativity is a huge trend in contemporary gardens. And fortunately, you don’t need a 500-year-old stone trough to pull it off. I’ve done some garden designing over the years since last seeing Sissinghurst and it was brought home to me again on this visit that making pathways and creating ‘walls’ as a backdrop for your garden are the things you need to incorporate to, as it were, frame your design. There are many ways to do make a path, and I think one the best and most inexpensive ways to create a pathway is by using a wood strip or plastic edging material and crushed gravel. Where they are not ancient weathered red brick, garden walls at Sissinghurst are primarily made using evergreen hedges and boxwood. Creating a living hedge frame or backdrop takes a bit more thought and cash outlay for the average property than just has a couple of trees and a stretch of lawn to its name, but there are creative ways to construct them. Fence posts with lattice between them, with climbing plants grown up the lattice is one method I’ve employed. After many years of contributing to this column, I’ve decided to take a break from writing about gardening. It’s been a wonderful thing to have the space to write about a passion and a calling that has been the center of my life for many, many years, but I feel the need to explore some other aspects of my creative life that I set aside when I came to garden in Point Roberts some 20 years ago. I wish you every pleasure the garden can bring you and, as Vita once famously said, “The more one gardens, the more one learns; and the more one learns, the more one realizes how little one knows.”

Wayne Vernon Knowles January 24, 1954 – July 3, 2018 It is with great shock and sadness that we announce the passing of Wayne Vernon Knowles: loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, cherished son and sibling, and loyal friend to many. Wayne passed away at his home and sanctuary in Point Roberts, with Linda, his wife and best friend, by his side on July 3, 2018. Wayne’s bright spirit is carried on through his wife Linda, three children Jarrett (Lia), Cassidy (Cam) and Marcus (Mariana), his step-children Steve (Tara) and Jon (Danielle), who will all continue to share stories of their dad to his grandchildren – Ella, Boaz, Leisel, Ben and Nicolas. Wayne is also survived by his adoring mother Ruth, his siblings Brenda (Bob) and Jerry (Inge), his first wife and close friend, Patti-Lynn. Wayne was born in Chicago on January 24, 1954 to Ruth and Dr. Vernon Knowles. Shortly after, the family moved to Saskatoon, and spent summers at their beloved cabin home at Waskesiu Lake. Wayne was a celebrated athlete through-
out high school and at The University of Saskatchewan, where he received his MBA. In his 20s, he moved to British Columbia where he raised his three children before finding his permanent home in the quiet town of Point Roberts. Wayne had a vision for community – to build a space for families to enjoy – which he poured his passion and time into through his cultivation of The Cottages at Seabright Farm. Wayne will be remembered for his kind and generous spirit; he loved to laugh and was always happiest when surrounded by those closest to him. He embraced all people with an open, accepting heart, treating everyone with a sense of equality and love, and the faith in his church and God only escalated this. Above all else, he valued the importance of family, a quality that he instilled in his children, which will be passed on forever. A service to celebrate Wayne’s life was held on Thursday, July 19 at Seabright Farm, in Point Roberts.

Church News By Gina Gaudet Manifestation is a popular topic among some self-help circles. In the widening income gap between rich and poor, many look for a way out of that gap that doesn’t include working three jobs just to make rent. “Manifesting” is an inviting concept. Years ago, I knew a family who struggled financially, and their pastor had tried to express the notion of faith manifesting the things we desire. The father of the family was using his faith to manifest a new truck. And a camper. He was so grounded in this faith, he was sure it was coming his way. Two years later, he was no closer to manifesting a truck and camper. This was a very simplistic expression of manifestation. Today, there are many “experts” out there who claim they’ve manifested great wealth and success for themselves by following a formula they created and will share with you for a fee. Which is how they continue to manifest. I was listening to a meditation by Deepak Chopra on the nature of desire, and was intrigued by the idea of the world actually turning on the drives of desire. The desire to exist. To evolve. To produce and reproduce. And universally, the desire to expand. The desire to manifest in so many forms: atoms to galaxies, bacteria to whales, molecules to oceans. Go back to the beginning. The creation
story says: “And God said, ‘Let there be ______. And there was ______.’ God expressed a desire, and it was manifest. The laws of physics tell us this process wasn’t as instantaneous as Genesis indicates. But the idea of manifestation is clearly described. God describes what is wanted, and makes it happen. Current language gives God the name, “consciousness,” and many scientists agree with the idea of an underlying ‘consciousness’ that manifests (creates) through myriad forms throughout the universe. A fairly simplistic description that embraces a whole lot of activity! But the principle remains clear: The universe turns on the energy of desire. The key to successful manifestation is deep self-understanding. Knowing who you are deep inside, the truth of your purpose on the planet, and a passionate desire to express this in your life. Most experts in the field of manifestation agree with the importance of self-knowledge, and with the energy of passion for self-expression. When we attribute “desire” to merely physical things, we miss the mystery of universal desire. When you embark on the journey of spirit, the road to understanding and authentic self-expression, you understand what true “desire” is, the true meaning of “riches,” and the deepest satisfaction of true manifestation.
