BLACK HISTORY

Program

For close to 40 years, The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission’s Black History Program (BHP) has been working to preserve, honor, and celebrate the history of African Americans and peoples of the African diaspora in Prince George’s County.

BHP was born out of a survey project designed to inventory historic African American sites in Prince George’s County in 1982. Since that time, BHP’s mission has been to encourage public engagement with the County’s rich African American historic and cultural resources through research, exhibitions, and educational and interpretive programming for all ages. The Program assists students, historical societies, local communities, and other members of the general public in documenting and celebrating Black history in Prince George’s County and beyond.

One of BHP’s major programs is the annual Black History Month exhibition. Past exhibitions have covered a variety of topics including Negro League baseball, African American education, tobacco and agricultural labor, and the role of archaeology in preserving Black history. The 2021 exhibition explores the history of healthcare and healing traditions within the Black community. Additionally, BHP takes the lead in organizing the annual Juneteenth Celebration at Watkins Regional Park. This festival commemorates the emancipation of African Americans during and after the Civil War, as well as their historical achievements in the period following the war through the present. Juneteenth features live entertainment, food, art exhibits, and activities designed for all ages.

visit blackhistory.pgparks.com

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 celebration was taken online. Videos from our virtual Juneteenth celebration can still be accessed on Facebook at our PGParks and PGParksHistory pages.

Be on the lookout in February for the 2021 Black History Month poster! Although the 2020 Visual Arts Summer Internship was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the poster will still feature work by a local artist.

BHP also manages three historic African American properties in Prince George’s County: Abraham Hall, Dorsey Chapel, and the Ridgley Rosenwald School. The Program’s main office is located at Abraham Hall, a benevolent lodge building in Beltsville, Maryland constructed in 1889. The other two historic properties that BHP maintains and operates include Dorsey Chapel, a one room church in Glenn Dale built in 1900, and the Ridgley Rosenwald School in Capitol Heights, a school built in 1927 with seed money from the Julius Rosenwald Fund.

BLACK HISTORY PROGRAM VISUAL ARTS SUMMER INTERNSHIP

Launched in 2016, this internship program merges the fields of history and the visual arts to explore African American history with interns selected from Prince George’s County high schools. Throughout this six-week program, interns participate in a variety of discussions, lectures, and hands-on activities. The internship also includes field trips to historic sites, art galleries, and museums throughout Prince George’s County and the Washington, D.C. region. Additionally, interns in this program work closely with a local artist to produce the Department of Parks and Recreation’s Black History Month poster, a beloved art project in Prince George’s County that dates back to 1989. Distributed throughout the County and beyond, this poster has become a treasured collector’s item and showcases the artistic talent of Prince George’s County youth.

This procedure ensures that the citizens who fund these programs through their tax dollars have the first option to enroll. After the priority registration period, registrations are accepted from residents of all jurisdictions. The fee schedule applies to all Commission programs and facilities in Prince George’s County, with a few exceptions such as performance tickets and historic site admission fees. *Note: Full payment is due at registration unless a class or program has a scheduled payment structure i.e. Kids’ Care, Trips & Excursions. Need help? Email the Customer Service Help Desk at CustomerService@pgparks.com.
