This season features world-class artists such as Rahsaan Patterson and Alex Bugnon in our Weekend Performances series, a host of educational programs for school-age children, more Saturday Family Fun events, and a vibrant slate of live performances in our popular Platinum Series for sassy seniors.

THE PUBLICK PLAYHOUSE opened in 1947 as the Cheverly Theatre, the flagship of the Sidney Lust chain of movie houses. Designed in the art deco style by John Eberson, it was one of the first public spaces in the area to have air conditioning. In the late 1960s, the theatre fell into decline and closed. In 1975, The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission acquired the property and began an extensive restoration, preserving many of the art deco elements of the building. In 1977, the building was re-opened as the Publick Playhouse, and since then has been a superior cultural resource that presents outstanding performances, classes, and art exhibitions for all ages.

Rahsaan Patterson is a world-renowned American rhythm and blues singer and actor best known for portraying “The Kid” on the popular show “Kids Incorporated.” Patterson has been hailed as a key part of the current soul movement and has recorded six impressive studio albums. He has recently collaborated with many artists—including Ledisi, Angela Johnson, and Sy Smith —and has co-written massive hits such as Brandy’s “Baby.” His diverse and vulnerable voice is unlike anyone else’s and should not be missed.

Frank McComb

Frank McComb is a divine soul man who speaks in the native tongue of soul, jazz, blues, and pop. His virtuoso vocal and piano work has made him not only an indispensable and highly sought-after session musician, but a favorite in the soul, jazz, and rhythm and blues scenes. His fans affectionately describe his work as the perfect combination of Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, and Chick Corea. McComb has worked with many of the entertainment industry’s giants including but not limited to: Prince, Branford Marsalis, George Duke, Patrice Rushen, The Rude Boys, Phil Perry, Tommy Davidson, Fred Hammond, John P. Kee, songwriting duo Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, D. J. Ray, Goodman & Brown Ray, Goodman & Brown is known as one of the most soulful R&B groups of the 70s. The group originated as “The Moments”, who formed in the mid-1960s and whose greatest successes came in the 1970s with hits including “Love On a Two-Way Street,” “Sexy Mama,” and “Look at Me (I’m in Love).” In 1979, for contractual reasons, they changed their name to Ray, Goodman & Brown. The group consisted of the late Harry Ray, Al Goodman (deceased) and the current leader of the group Billy Brown. The hit making of Ray, Goodman and Brown continued with such hits as “Happy Anniversary,” “Special Lady” and others.

The legacy continues with current members Kevin “Ray” Owens (long time back-up singer for the legendary Luther Vandross), Larry Winfree and original member Billy Brown. Few groups of that era have equaled the stage presence and consistent crowd pleasing shows of Ray, Goodman and Brown. They are one of the most sought after groups on the ever popular “70’s Soul Tour.” Calling all “Special Ladies” for an evening of being serenaded by the incomparable “Ray, Goodman and Brown.”

Motown and More: A Holiday Celebration Even today, the name “Motown” still evokes the sounds and images of that past musical era full of great artists, classic songs, and smooth choreography. For the holidays, Motown and More: A Holiday Celebration offers those special tunes that bring the season in with style—such as The Temptations’ “Silent Night” and the Jackson 5’s “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” Motown and More: A Holiday Celebration is a seasonal favorite throughout the state and has sold out area venues for the past three years.

Catherine Russell

Motown and More

With her sixth album “Harlem on My Mind,” Grammy Award-winning vocalist Catherine Russell journeys to the blues heart of the great African American songbook. Swinging forth with soulful interpretations, Russell taps the golden age of Harlem, as befits this vibrant daughter of jazz. Vocalists Ethel Waters, Billie Holiday, Etta James, and Dinah Washington provide her inspiration. Russell is a native New Yorker and a one-of-a-kind musician and vocalist. Russell’s voice and music have been a hit at major jazz festivals, including Montreal’s, Newport’s, and Monterey’s, and she is a genuine rare jazz and blues singer. In 2012, Russell won a Grammy Award for the “Boardwalk Empire” soundtrack album.

Everyone has a favorite Luther Vandross song; what’s yours? Bring your special someone to the Playhouse for this Valentine weekend treat. William “Smooth” Wardlaw embodies the sound and style of Vandross and wraps it up with his own distinctive flavor. So, close your eyes for a moment and listen. Do you hear Luther Vandross? Wardlaw is a great singer and fantastic entertainer. With his Feisty Divas and The Sensation Band, he is burning up the country to sold-out audiences. Victory Boyd

Love2Dance

Victory Boyd’s music is a fusion between soul music and folk music. Whether Boyd is performing classics or original compositions, she has a way of tailoring each song with her voice and guitar to fit her unique style. Some people say she’s a cross between Tracy Chapman, Roberta Flack, and Nina Simone.

Her style is youthful, mellow, and spiritual all at the same time. Most recently, Boyd got a record deal with Jay-Z and Roc Nation. Come and see this awe-inspiring young artist.

Washington Women in Jazz Business Workshop and Networking Event Join Washington Women in Jazz Festival (WWJF) director Amy K. Bormet and ChamberSoul cellist and singer Shana Tucker in this informative business workshop that will focus on developing your career as a creative entreprenuer.

This will be an evening of inspiration and conversation. We will discuss the importance of collaborating with artists, how to generate new performances, best practices for developing press materials, and more. Washington Women in Jazz Festival’s Young Artist Showcase Enjoy an afternoon of performances as part of the Washington Women in Jazz Festival’s (WWIJ) Young Artist Showcase. The showcase will feature emerging female jazz musicians in high school and college. Selected young artists will perform in the showcase with professional musicians who make up the WWIJ Trio. A jam session will follow the performances.

JoGo Project

The JoGo Project is a genre-blending ensemble inspired by the musical stylings of Chuck Brown. Based in Washington, D.C., the band combines elements of jazz, funk, rhythm and blues, rock, even pop, and, of course, Go-Go music to create a fresh, healthy blend of styles that’s sure to keep you on your feet!

Founded by saxophonist Elijah Jamal Balbed in 2014, the JoGo Project’s goal is to unite cultures and communities by introducing jazz fans to Go-Go and vice versa.

Regina Belle: Back to her Roots For nearly 25 years, Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Regina Belle has been wowing audiences with her powerful voice. Much of that recognition has been for her work in rhythm and blues, with hits such as “A Whole New World (Aladdin’s Theme),” “Make It Like It Was,” and “Baby Come to Me.” In this special performance, Belle returns to her gospel roots. The Color of New Orleans Musical Extravaganza In celebration of more than 300 years of the history and tradition of New Orleans, this musical extravaganza showcases the music, dance, language, and culture of that beloved city. Join us as we go from the Mardi Gras to the French Quarter Festival, while celebrating classical musicians of New Orleans. This performance is held in partnership with the Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts and Opera Créole, an opera company founded in New Orleans, LA. Tickets: $15/person

Alex Bugnon

Pianist Alex Bugnon has been a prolific, energetic force on the contemporary music scene for almost three decades. A renowned musician, composer, and bandleader, Bugnon comes from the picturesque town of Caux, Switzerland— four miles from Montreux, site of the world famous jazz festival. No doubt, the annual convergence in his hometown and in his own home of some of music’s most illustrious names played a role in his decision to pursue a musical career. The fact that his uncle was the legendary Donald Byrd only served to fortify his decision. It’s no coincidence that Bugnon is embraced by a rhythm and blues/soul audience: His love of music was rooted in an appreciation and understanding of classic jazz and soul-based artists Horace Silver to Herbie Hancock; Thelonious Monk to Ahmad Jamal; and Art Blakey to Earth, Wind, and Fire.

PLATINUM MOVIE: Lion (2016) This biographical film about the long journey of a young boy, Saroo, weaves together feelings of loss, devotion, family, and determination. Five-year-old Saroo gets lost on a train and travels thousands of miles across India before being adopted by an Australian family. Twenty-five years later, Saroo uses modern technology and his few memories to find and return home. The acclaimed film stars Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman and won many awards, including an Academy Awards nomination for Best Picture.

Valentine’s Day Concert FEATURING THE SOFTONES

In the early 1970s, Baltimore was a wellspring of soulful sound, and The Softones were at the forefront. Marvin Brown, Elton Lynch, and Steve Jackson started singing in their early teens as The Softones. With Brown as their lead singer, The Softones’ first recording was a local effort called “Any Street,” which outsold the Jackson 5’s “ABC” in the Baltimore-Washington area. This got the attention of AVCO Embassy Records, which signed The Softones and released the single that became their first hit, “My Dream.” Brown, Lynch, and Jackson continue to perform in the inimitable style unique to vocalists who really love classic rhythm and blues music.

Celebrating Al Green Jerome Mackall is a soulful rhythm and blues Southern Soul singer whose passionate vocals supported by an effectively energetic performance make him a natural-born entertainer. He started his singing career at an early age and became the lead vocal for the local Southern Soul recording group Hardaway Connection. Mackall has appeared in “Showtime at the Apollo,” many premiere theaters and nightclubs in the DMV, and at countless social events. His sound and approach deliver a captivating homage to legendary artist Al Green.

The Publick Playhouse presents a series of midweek matinees that are entertaining, educational performances for the enrichment of area students. This anti-bullying dramatic tale shows the temptations and pitfalls inherent in social media and online culture. Cyberbullying is real and has consequences in real life. Bright Star Theatre’s production will help younger audience members understand the danger and know how to practice healthy behavior online.

The Tiger, the Thief, and the Dried Persimmon from Korea features a trickster tiger whose antics recall the teachings of Anansi. “Color-Full” Paintings by Charles Reiher Public Reception for the Artist: Thursday, June 13, 2019, 7– 9 pm Charles Reiher’s focus is on color and movement. He often liquefies and pours the acrylic, which helps to create movement and allows nature to participate in the painting process by determining where the paints will flow and how they will mix together. Many of the pieces incorporate gesso, molding paste, and sand to give a three dimensional feel to the paintings. Most of Reiher’s paintings are so full of color and movement they seem to embody the hectic, 24/7 connectivity of the 21st century while providing a sense of pleasure and hope that we can survive and even enjoy the frenetic pace at which we live.

AUDITIONS The Publick Playhouse offers opportunities for aspiring dancers and actors to participate in the performing arts. All auditions are held at the Publick Playhouse, however, application procedures and deadlines differ, so please check the individual listings carefully.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2018, 10 AM–3 PM

PRAISE Dance Festival Auditions Liturgical dance companies, studios, ministries, and individual dancers are invited to audition for the annual PRAISE Liturgical Dance Festival. The Festival will be presented on Sunday, February 24, 2019, at 4 pm.

Bring a CD of the music and audition one complete work in costume; the piece presented in the audition should be one you wish to perform at the Festival. Auditions are by appointment. For an application call 301-277-1710 (TTY 301-699-2544). Application deadline: Friday, November 9, 5 pm.

Shakespeare in the Parks

Prince George’s Shakespeare in the Parks brings free, entertaining and accessible productions of works by the greatest playwright of the English language to communities throughout Prince George’s County, and provides opportunities for county-based directors, designers, actors, and musicians to share their creativity and expertise with county residents of all ages. All acting positions are paid; performances are scheduled from July 9–27, 2019 in open-air locations in Prince George’s County. Auditioning actors must be 18 years or older, and should present a monologue from one of Shakespeare’s plays. Actors need not be county residents to audition. Auditions are by appointment only. World Dance Showcase Auditions Performers of traditional, culture-specific dance styles, ages 16 years and older may audition for the 17th Annual World Dance Showcase. Adjudicators will select six groups to perform in concert on Saturday, March 30, 2019, at 8 pm, with each group receiving an honorarium of $600. Those selected will have a custom lighting design created for them using state-of-the-art computerized lighting displays available at the Publick Playhouse. A professional high-definition video recording of each dance is made available to the selected dance companies after the March performance. The audition piece may include any traditional work of 15 minutes or less. Work must be auditioned in finished form with costumes. Theatre Hours: Administrative offices are open Monday-Friday, 8:30 am–5 pm.

Box Office Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 5 pm and two hours before every performance.

Box Office Ticket Policies: The Box Office accepts cash, checks, VISA, MasterCard, Discover Card, and American Express. A $25 fee will be assessed for returned checks. Everyone, regardless of age, must have a ticket; children under age one who sit on parents’ laps will be issued a special ticket at no charge. All ticket sales are final; tickets may not be refunded or exchanged.

Patrons may take Metro Bus F1, F8, F2, or T18 or Prince George’s The Bus 18 to the theatre. (Connect to F2 Metro Bus from Cheverly Metro Station, or ride T18 Metro Bus from the New Carrollton Metro Station.)

Parking is free; there are three lighted parking lots adjacent to the theatre.

Driving from Maryland: Take I-495 to the Baltimore/Washington Parkway South, exit at “Cheverly, Route 202” and turn right on Route 202. The theatre is 1/2 mile on the left.

Driving from Washington, DC or Virginia: Take New York Avenue or I-295 to the Baltimore/Washington Parkway and exit on Route 202. Turn left on Route 202. The theatre is 1/2 mile on the left. Parking behind and beside the theatre is free.
