Jazz Trombonist John Jensen with Piano
John Jensen, formerly lead trombonist with the U.S. Navy Commodores, the Navy’s jazz orchestra, has appeared as a soloist and combo leader and with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. In addition to regular jazz concerts with either the piano or combo, he does a one-man program in which he plays a variety of wind instruments, including the didgeridoo, that very strange Australian instrument. He talks about the development of brass instruments from the beginning through Louis Armstrong. Jensen also offers a tribute program honoring the great trombonist and bandleader, Tommy Dorsey, Jensen also fronts a dynamic Dixie Group called the Good Time Trio. All ages • Tickets: $16/person

CONCERT
Blue Magic
Blue Magic is a classic R&B Soul Group and one of the most popular groups to come out of the City of Philadelphia. They hit the top 40 charts with their first three singles before breaking through and crossing over with the mega hit “Side Show,” which went gold, topping the R&B charts. Their next single “Three Ring Circus” made the R&B top 10 and the pop top 40 charts. Some other noteworthy hits are “Spell,” “Stop to Start” and “Chasing Rainbows.” The group today consists of founder, Richard Pratt, Ivery Bell, Jimmy Lee, and Don Nottingham. The group is noted for their sweet mellow sounds, classic love songs, and smooth choreography, which is all mixed together and seasoned with a touch of class. Part Harmony, A Cappella
Part Harmony is one of Baltimore’s finest a cappella groups. Established in 1984, three brothers along with two cousins set out to bring joy to the hearts of everyone who listens through song. Known for their ability to bring back the sounds of Doo Wop mixed with Motown and Flash, Part Harmony always seems to please their audience. Becoming an attraction each summer at Baltimore City’s Inner Harbor Downtown Amphitheater, their popularity grows with every performance. Some of their accomplishments consist of sharing the stage with some very elite company such as Sinbad, Angela Bofield, Natalie Cole, The Four Tops, The Drifters, and others. They also had a cameo appearance in Charles Dutton’s directorial debut “The Corner” and the first episode of “Homicide.” All ages • Tickets: $16/person

Motown Review
An ensemble of the DMV’s most talented artists, “A Tribute to the Music of Motown” featuring The Brencore Allstar Band, brings to life Motown of yesteryear. This fine production celebrates 55 years of Motown, highlighting artists including Smokey and The Miracles, The Temptations, The Supremes, The Jackson 5, and many more. The Brencore Allstar Band, which has widely been acknowledged as the premiere band of the nation’s capital, recreates the Motown sound for the ensemble of talented vocalists. Cellist Drew Owen & Pianist Haskell Small
Cellist Drew Owen performs with the National Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, and the Washington Opera Orchestra. He was a member of the now defunct New Orleans Symphony and was a founding member of the Louisiana Philharmonic. Mr. Owen’s program includes Bach and Kodaly and other works from the standard repertoire, including Beethoven, Brahms, and Schumann. Hailed by England’s Musical Times for his “dazzlingly prodigious technique,” pianist Haskell Small has concertized with great success in major European capitals, South America, Japan, and China, and has been enthusiastically received by American audiences in such venues as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Spoleto Festival USA. The top semifinalist in the Johann Sebastian Bach International Piano Competition, Mr. Small has received numerous awards and has been featured in the nationally broadcast PBS special, “A Celebration of the Piano.” All ages • Tickets: $16/person

The Reluctant Dragon
Jack discovers that a dragon is living in his village! Much to his surprise, this dragon is friendly and loves a good book. Soon, Jack and the dragon become best friends, but not everyone in the village believes a dragon can be friendly. With the help of the hilarious and heroic Sir George, Jack and his new best friend use teamwork to win the hearts of everyone in the village. Kindness, respect, and friendship abound as the quiet village learns to accept everyone who lives there. Jeremy Koch, Classical Saxophonist with Piano
Jeremy P. Koch is an active saxophonist, chamber musician, and teacher in the Washington, D. C. area. He has been a member of the United States Air Force Band since 1998 where he’s been a featured concert soloist on national tours, as well as performed with diverse artists such as: Tony Bennett, Wynonna Judd, and Kool & the Gang. As a freelance saxophonist and teacher in the area, he regularly presents clinics and recitals and performs with the United States Air Force Saxophone Quartet, Joint Chiefs of Sax Quartet, and Fairfax Symphony Orchestra. He maintains a private studio and is adjunct professor of saxophone at Shepherd University and Northern Virginia Community College. All ages • Tickets: $16/person

Shadz of Soul
Shadz of Soul, the dynamic female trio from the Washington metropolitan area, has been captivating audiences with their soulful and sultry sound for many years. The trio was originally formed in the early 90s and the group’s members Anissa, Farnetta, and Shawn, embody what soul is all about. Ever evolving in the love of their craft, Shadz of Soul is known for captivating an audience by means of not only their beauty, but everything from their individual voices, to transcending pass that closed eye. As an instrumentalist, vocalist, bandleader, Master of Ceremonies, producer, and talent manager, David has been providing quality entertainment in the Washington area for more than 20 years. He retired as a member of “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band with more than 20 years of service. During that time, he served 6 presidents. Double C Duo-four hands, one piano
Rosanne Conway began performing at the age of 16 when she appeared with the Seattle Symphony. She studied at the University of Washington and the University of Colorado. Barbara Peterson Cackler was born and raised in Kansas, where she began studying the piano with her mother at the age of four. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and her Master of Music degree from Yale School of Music. Rosanne and Barbara formed the Double C Piano Duo in 2010. The partnership has been greatly enhanced by their similar musical temperaments and ideas. Their primary goal is to bring composers’ music alive to their audiences. Their repertoire includes original works for four hands at one piano, transcriptions of orchestral works, and many seasonal favorites. All ages • Tickets: $16/person

An Evening of Gospel
(8-8:45 pm) - Washington Performing Arts Society Men and Women of the Gospel Choir Formed in 1991, the Washington Performing Arts Society Men and Women of the Gospel Choir have been performing at prestigious venues within the Washington metropolitan area, continuing its mission to showcase our community’s finest adult and children’s voices in celebration of the tradition and inspirational root of gospel music. The Choir features works by local and national music composers in concert, while sharing the stage with an array of artists including Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Chorale Le Chateau, Ledisi, the late Walter Hawkins, Kurt Carr, Dottie Peoples, Ramsey Lewis Trio, and Sweet Honey in the Rock. (9-9:30 pm) - Mike McCoy and Voices United Voices United, a group envisioned in the heart of its founder Mike McCoy, put together this powerful collection of anointed singers that consist of choir directors, pastors, preachers, praise and worship leaders, musicians and evangelists from various churches in the Washington metropolitan area. Blue Sky 5
Whether you love to lindy hop, remember the days when “swing was king”, or just appreciate good vintage jazz, you can dig all that jive with Blue Sky 5. The band’s repertoire consists of songs made popular by Count Basie, Nat Cole, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Fats Waller, along with tunes by other swing era artists. Not just a repertoire band, Blue Sky 5 performs original songs written by Craig Gildner and arranged by the musicians that capture the era’s style and sizzle. The Eric Byrd Trio features Bhagwan Khalsa on acoustic bass and Alphonso M. Young on drums. The trio plays traditional jazz while providing an energetic and modern approach to standards and original compositions. Missoula Children’s Theatre provides two professional tour actor/directors who will audition and cast 50-60 local elementary and secondary school students in a full-length, original musical production of Aladdin. For Aladdin it’s not easy to find a magic lamp, but it’s even harder to get a date! It’s a swirling sandstorm of famous Arabian tales from Ali Baba to Scheherazade, and even Sinbad the Sailor, as Aladdin journeys to find a magic lamp in a Cave of (not-so-great) Wonders. Along his way Aladdin seeks answers and advice from wise genies, a powerful sultan, and his own mother to find a way to meet the princess. However, even with the lamp in hand, Aladdin will have to learn that it takes more than a wish to make a good impression. Lincoln & Tubman
Two iconic figures of the 19th century come together onstage to share their roles in ending slavery in America. In the process, they emphasize the importance of education, standing up for your beliefs, and having compassion for others. This production delves into the childhoods of Harriet Tubman and Abraham Lincoln, recreating the key moments and events that shaped both of their lives. Audiences follow these great leaders as they face challenges in order to do what is right for their fellow Americans. Abolition and the Civil War are seen through the eyes of two great leaders. This show seeks to celebrate the many contributions of heroic Americans while encouraging audiences to make a difference in their own world. All ages • Tickets: $5/person

Dixie Power Trio
Dixie Power Trio is not your ordinary “trio” (for starters, there are four members). The heart of their sound is a combination of all that is New Orleans: Dixieland, Zydeco, Swing, Cajun, and Rock ‘n Roll. Using a traditional New Orleans instrumentation, the Trio ventures into territory where no tuba or accordion has dared to tread. Borrowing material from Dr. John, Chuck Berry, Jelly Roll Morton, even the Ramones and Led Zeppelin and many others, the Trio has a knack for reinventing classics. At the same time, they take pride in the authenticity of their New Orleans jazz repertoire & original compositions. Greg Harrison Jazz Band
Southern swing is a good way to describe the Greg Harrison Jazz Band. Clarinetist Harrison is a Pete Fountain protégé, so his style is reflective of that great New Orleans musician. This busy group appears regularly at jazz clubs and on performing arts series. In addition to Harrison on clarinet, the group may include piano, guitar, and bass. Sometimes Greg performs as a trio, sometimes as a quartet. Typical song titles are “Way Down Yonder in New Orleans,” “Chicago,” “It Had To Be You,” and many other recognizable tunes. Shirley Jones of The Jones Girls
Shirley Jones, of the Philly soul vocal group, The Jones Girls, was born into a gospel singing family in Detroit. Sisters, Brenda, Valorie and Shirley, calling themselves, The Jones Girls, spent the better part of the 60s and 70s as backup singers for Lou Rawls, Teddy Pendergrass, Diana Ross, and Aretha Franklin. The Jones Girls scored their biggest hit in May 1979 with the chart busting “You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else.” That was followed up by additional hits “Who Can I Run To?” “I Just Love The Man,” and “Nights Over Egypt.” The group disbanded in 1985 and Shirley Jones went on to a successful solo career, scoring a #1 R&B hit in 1986 with “Do You Get Enough Love?” Unfortunately, sister Valorie passed in December 2001, but Shirley Jones has carried on the legacy of The Jones Girls and continues to keep their music alive and well. The Velons
Four Washington, D.C. high school friends formed The Velons in 1958. In 1968, the group signed to the local record label BJM and released ‘‘Why Don’t You Write?” and ‘‘That’s What Love Can Do” Their current members are Jimmy Falwell, Bobby Horn, Robert “Snobby” Brown, Jr. and the co-founder of the R&B group, The Dynamic Superiors, George Spann. Heatwave remains one of the most beloved groups of the 70s. Inspired by the classic tale of The Little Red Hen, this version reveals the truth about what really happened that fateful day when a chicken decided to bake a loaf of bread. Steve Abshire
Steve Abshire is a jazz guitarist, teacher, and clinician in the Washington/Baltimore area. His mainstream style comes from years of study with Herb Ellis, Barney Kessel, Joe Pass and rhythm guitarist Steve Jordan. Abshire has played with jazz giants such as Gene Bertoncini, Charlie Byrd, Keter Betts, Scott Hamilton, Marian McPartland, and accompanied legendary vocalists Della Reese, Rosemary Clooney, Joe Williams, Etta Jones, and Diane Shurr. Steve has also appeared in concert with the “Great Guitars” sitting in for Barney Kessel. Steve was the guitarist/featured soloist with The Commodores, the Navy’s premiere jazz band, for 18 years. He retired from the Navy in 1997. All ages • Tickets: $16/person

The Marcels
The Marcels were an American doo-wop group known for turning popular music songs into rock and roll. The Marcels are as advertised, the guys who put the “Bomp” in the “Bomp-A-Bomp” back in 1961 when their first recording, “Blue Moon” sold over two and a half million copies. The Marcels are audience favorites for both young and old and whenever they perform they define the term ‘class act.’ All ages • Tickets: General Admission $25/person; $20/students & seniors

Glenn Leonard’s Temptations Revue
Glenn Leonard, who was the lead singer of The Temptations from 1975-83, recorded on 10 albums with the group, appeared on numerous TV specials, and circled the globe many times over. Mr. Leonard has hand selected his current group, all with a long history with Glenn and a variety of national recording groups. Amazing reviews have lauded vocal talent, showmanship on stage, and personalities offstage. This show is full of high energy and choreography, and they perform all the hits. Eric Abrahamson
We are delighted to offer you Eric Abrahamson’s special program of Ragtime and Tin Pan Alley hits just as you would experience them on Main Street in Disneyland, which is where Eric Abrahamson spends much of his time. This entertaining and informative show closely examines the history and roots of American ragtime piano, and its evolution into the vocal music of the era known as the golden age of songwriting. Abrahamson, a 25-year veteran of the California music business, is also the music director for Knott‘s Berry Farm and Cedar Fair Parks. In this area, he frequently performs at King’s Dominion and has served as music director on several shows there. All ages • Tickets: $16/person

The Fabulous Chinese Acrobats
Dazzling acrobatic stunts and feats of balance, flexibility, coordination and strength - truly fabulous! This professional troupe of three to four acrobats, ages 16 and older, is accompanied by an interpreter who enriches this unique performance with fascinating information about Chinese culture, customs, history, and school life. These talented athletes tumble and flip, twist and bend in mesmerizing ways, demonstrating how practice, concentration and hard work turn their bodies into moving works of art. They skillfully balance or juggle items such as porcelain jars, silk umbrellas, tables or each other as they share this ancient and colorful art form. The McCusker Brothers
McCusker Brothers, Tim and Phil McCusker have been performing together since childhood when their father, an old time fiddle player, introduced them to traditional American tunes. They play banjo, guitar, and mandolin and sing a variety of folk tunes to include Appalachian, Bluegrass, New England, Blues, Railroad, Cowboy, Irish, and Protest songs. Mariachi Los Amigos was founded in 1979 and has continued to evolve over the years. Los Amigos truly are what their name depicts: a group of friends who share a passion for the lively, extraverted sound of mariachi music. Mariachi music originated among the ranching and farming people of west Mexico in the 19th century and began to gain recognition in the U.S. during the early 20th century. Mariachi Los Amigos perform a wide repertoire of musical material, from the latest canción ranchera (country song), to romantic boleros, lively polkas and hard driving jaliscienses. The harmonic convergence known as The Main Ingredient that pumped out such still-played ‘70s hits as “Everybody Plays The Fool,” “Spinning Around (I Must Be Falling In Love),” “I’m So Proud,” “You’ve Been My Inspiration,” “Just Don’t Want To Be Lonely,” and “Happiness Is Just Around The Bend” still belts out the classic sounds for audiences that crave true harmony, beautiful melodies, and lyrics they can relate to.” As long as we are able, we will continue to give the fans what they crave”, says Gooding. Retro/Spective: Works by Alan Binstock
Alan Binstock’s work tends to be self-reflective and focuses on stone, glass and steel with occasional pieces in other materials. The stone and steel balance, support and cantilever their way towards a visual resolution and each piece is a silent witness in dynamic tension. His compositions bring the unique qualities, which each material manifests into a dialogue, that, when successful, offer a moment of reflection.

Five Make Art
Five artists explore the natural and built worlds, society, and fantasy through expressive, conceptual work. Working in varied mediums—paint, clay, and pastels as well as furniture, molded Styrofoam, art paper, and plants—Gloria Chapa, Ellen Cornett, Liz Lescault, Pam Rogers, and Claudia Vess reveal their edge and feminist eye. Evocative and ambiguous organic forms appear in Lescault’s work, and botanic magical realism is conjured from natural materials in Rogers’ art; Chapa reconfigures domestic discards to explore the detritus of modern life; and Vess’s machine-formed Styrofoam sculptures call to mind the built environment, while Cornett’s dark fairytales explore the terrain of subtext and dreams.

Pieces Of You: Paintings by Chanel Compton
In Ms. Compton’s most recent series of mixed media portraits entitled Pieces Of You, she explores the personal connection and facination she has with her subjects which include musicians, family members as well as real and imaginary friends. Through layers of paper, paint, charcoal and various other materials, Ms. Compton first deconstructs and then reconstructs her portraits, all the while searching for the physical and emotional thread of each person she paints. The resulting portraits are thus visually charged with energy, color, texture, and movement.

The core of Ms. Williams’ art work lies in the synthesis of assemblage and second hand components.
