Dear Friends As Chairman of the Prince George’s County Planning Board and The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), I am THRILLED to invite you to “Explore the Arts” in Prince George’s County! This season, our ultra-creative Arts and Cultural Heritage Division of our Department of Parks and Recreation has planned a magnificent lineup of visual and live performances, special events, and workshops.

Stretching across Prince George’s County, M-NCPPC’s arts and cultural centers – including Harmony Hall Arts Center, Brentwood Arts Exchange, Montpelier Arts Center, and Prince George’s Publick Playhouse – will host a fascinating array of programming and exhibitions showcasing the dynamic and vibrant talent of local, regional, national, and even international artists. We take great pride in delivering unique programming for everyone to enjoy. Harmony Hall Arts Center opened its doors to the public in September 1989 and quickly evolved into an active arts locale. John Addison Concert Hall, a cozy venue of 220 seats, each with up-close and unobstructed views of the performers on stage. The art center provides extensive, in-depth programs for children and adults, building audiences for the future. The facility boasts classrooms/studios for painting and drawing, ceramics and sculpture, arts and crafts, a dance studio, a drama classroom, and a complete photography studio. Classes are offered in painting, drawing, watercolor, ceramics, sculpture, adult drama, creative dramatics, African Dance, Belly Dancing, ballet for adults and children, class voice and both B/W and digital photography.

Located on the grounds of the historic Montpelier Mansion, which dates to the 1780s, the Arts Center was built on the footprint of the original 1925 cattle barn.

The Arts Center houses three galleries, artist studios, a metal casting facility, gas- and electric-fired kilns, a digital lab, and classrooms. It also offers an extensive class and workshop program in the visual and literary arts for children to adults; beginners to advanced. Cultural events in both the visual and performing arts are offered throughout the year as well.

Known for its comfortable, inviting space and great acoustics, the Publick Playhouse is one of the best performing arts venues in the greater Washington, DC area. First opened as the Cheverly Theatre in 1947, the Publick Playhouse was designed by the architectural firm of John Eberson. For many years the Cheverly, as it was known, was a neighborhood institution, the flagship of the Sidney Lust chain of movie houses. It had ornate sky scenes in the ceiling, plush seating for more than 900, and air conditioning. Conveniently located less than one-half mile from the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, and close to I-495, the Playhouse serves as a popular venue for music and modern dance, musical theater, historical drama, educational programs and monthly events for seniors.

The Publick Playhouse is pleased to present the GEICO Gecko Series, a series of midweek matinees for youth generously supported by the GEICO Philanthropic Foundation. GEICO Gecko Series matinees are free to Title 1 Schools in Prince George’s County, giving young people the opportunity to experience outstanding performances at the Publick Playhouse. The Brentwood Arts Exchange is The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission’s component of the public-private partnership Gateway Arts Center, serving as an anchor for the arts-based community development of the Prince George’s County Gateway Arts District. “Playin’ to the Edge”

by Aqcuaetta Williams Through Saturday, January 12, 2019 Monday–Friday, 8:30 am–5 pm Public Reception for the Artist: Thursday, November 29, 2018, 7–9 pm “Who are those who orchestrate this urban music, who share this daily walk with me? They are faceless, vulnerable, and fragile.” Williams bases her success on reaching her audience of free thinkers: artists and poets. By doing so, she opens a doorway to images that create emotional agitation and excitement. Her collage paintings are engaging in their technique and expression. Williams presents the viewer with keys to unlock the unconscious mind.

Documented, Installation Detail

In collaboration with Casa de La Cultura El Salvador, this exhibition presents an interactive experience in which communities are invited to take part in creative placemaking by posting their photos and stories of migration on the gallery walls.

With this interactive, multimedia piece, first presented in 2006, artist and educator Muriel Hasbun seeks to “bridge the distance between the stories of Salvadorans living ‘there’ and the Salvadoran community in the Washington, D.C., area,” the largest and fastest-growing immigrant community in our region.

The Washington Sculptors Group was founded in 1984 with the mission to “promote an awareness and an understanding of sculpture and foster the exchange of ideas among sculptors, collectors, and the general public.” This exhibition brings together works that push the boundaries of the physical, the spatial, and the interpreted.

Mixed-Media Collage Quilt Paintings

by Curtis Woody Thursday, January 17–Sunday, March 17, 2019 Monday–Friday, 8:30 am–5 pm Public Reception: Sunday, March 17, 3-5 pm Curtis Woody is a mixed-media collage painter who draws inspiration from historical connection points that join together individuals, families, generations, and communities. He creates highly textured and intricately detailed original art pieces intended to breathe new life into and enhance the unique characteristics of a common historical heritage. Life is a circle, and he takes pleasure in salvaging the old to create something new, asking the viewer to recognize the past while appreciating the here and now. His paintings are research-based collages, and he uses an assortment of found objects, old books, aged photographs, buttons, letters, vintage newspapers, and rusty metal combined with an assortment of artistic mediums.

MAIN GALLERY | BLACK HISTORY MONTH EXHIBITION

Moving Out, Moving In, Moving Up The Story of Black Migration and Immigration in Prince George’s County Monday, January 21–Thursday, February 28, 2019 Daily, 10 am–5 pm (closed major holidays) Public Reception: Sunday, January 27, 2–4 pm Migration has been a defining characteristic of the black experience in the United States since the arrival of the first enslaved Africans to the American colonies in the early 1600s. But the early 20th century marked a new and important phase in migration as unprecedented numbers of African Americans moved from the rural South to the urban North in search of a better life. Multiple waves of this “Great Migration” would continue during the course of the 20th century into the 21st century as blacks within the United States as well as black immigrants moved to and within this country. This exhibit explores the factors spurring black migration and immigration as well as the resulting changes in society on the national, regional, and local levels. This exhibit is curated by the M-NCPPC Black History Program.

Arnold Hurley’s approach to painting involves a realistic or representational style, and his works vary from still-life drawings to portraiture. He has earned more than 40 awards for his oil, watercolor, and pastel paintings and his pencil drawings. Hurley paints every day and follows this precept: “Never forget the basics—they will serve as the foundation throughout your creative life. Challenge yourself and remember your art will change and grow. And always draw, draw, and draw some more.”

Contemplating Our Waters: Nicole Salimbene Monday, March 25–Saturday, May 18, 2019 Monday–Friday, 8:30 am–8 pm Saturday, 10 am–4 pm; Sunday 10 am–2 pm Public Reception: Saturday, March 30, 3–5 pm Nicole Salimbene is an interdisciplinary artist working at the intersection of poetics, psychology, environmentalism, and contemplative practice. Her work strives to glean elegance and monumentality out of the ordinary and ephemeral. Through form and idea, she searches for the poetics of materiality and relationship and the transformation that arises from wrestling with internal and external worlds. From this, Salimbene seeks to provide interactive engagements as a way for viewers to embody the metaphors presented for reflection.

Campbell’s compositions call attention to the chaotic world of humanity, while investigating the various elements that inform the ways humans interact. She presents her human figures in fictitious landscapes, amid a frenzied environment that invites a spectator into a visual feast of symbols. In the absence of words, the viewer arrives at multiple interpretations of what is occurring in the scene presented, as the artist further highlights the absurdity of human existence.

(In)Justice Systems Monday, March 25–Saturday, May 18, 2019 Monday–Friday, 8:30 am–8 pm Saturday, 10 am–4 pm; Sunday 10 am–2 pm Public Reception: Saturday, March 30, 2019, 5–8 pm Curated by Erin Devine, associate professor of art history, Northern Virginia Community College, this exhibition presents work of a group of contemporary artists as they explore the impact of mass incarceration on prisoners, families, and communities in the United States—which holds the highest incarceration rate in the world. The exhibit also seeks to provide a space for broader meanings of “incarceration” that are global, racial, and gendered, with works that encompass community action, spatial concepts, and history.

Jill Tanenbaum and Cathy Abramson Saturday, April 6–Sunday, May 26, 2019 Daily, 10 am–5 pm (closed major holidays) Public Reception: Sunday, April 7, 2–4 pm Tanenbaum and Abramson showcase glassworks and paintings that feature the colors, shapes, and energy found in and around urban settings. One can feel the pulse of a city in the work of both of these women. Tanenbaum’s glass pieces are often inspired by the people, experiences, and visions she observes in urban environments at home and abroad. She likes to “quilt” together many images and techniques that when fused tell a story. Abramson’s paintings focus on people in neighborhoods in transition. “A single moment in time” comes to mind when one views her work, as each image appears to freeze-frame a whir of urban activity and offers the viewer a chance to reflect on that moment’s juxtaposition with and application to other locations, cultures, and activities.

Polt creates gestural marks in her prints and marries a painterly brush style with the more delicate line work of traditional printmaking. Her work is often inspired by observations of life, including family and history, the natural world, and the urban landscape.

Lori Ulmer-Hanson

Saturday, June 1–Sunday, June 30, 2019 Daily, 10 am–5 pm (closed major holidays) Public Reception: Friday, June 7, 7–9 pm Lori Ulmer-Hanson is an American artist best known for her artwork derived from the human form. She creates her work using a diverse array of media, including bronze, stone, and clay, with each medium having different characteristics and requiring varying techniques. Figurativism may best describe Ulmer-Hanson’s works—particularly her sculptures, where her strong suggestive references and tacit understanding of abstracted shapes are clear. Although sculpture remains her principal medium, she also works in 2D as a painter, illustrator, and graphic designer.

“Color-Full” Paintings by Charles Reiher Thursday, June 6–Saturday, August 3, 2019 Monday–Friday, 8:30 am–5 pm Public Reception: Thursday, June 13, 2019, 7– 9 pm Charles Reiher’s focus is on color and movement. He often liquefies and pours the acrylic, which helps to create movement and allows nature to participate in the painting process by determining where the paints will flow and how they will mix together. Many of the pieces incorporate gesso, molding paste, and sand to give a three dimensional feel to the paintings. Most of Reiher’s paintings are so full of color and movement they seem to embody the hectic, 24/7 connectivity of the 21st century while providing a sense of pleasure and hope that we can survive and even enjoy the frenetic pace at which we live.

Marcia Wolfson Ray: archiTERRA Friday, June 7–Sunday, July 28, 2019 Daily, 10 am–5 pm (closed major holidays) Public Reception: Friday, June 7, 7–9 pm Marcia Wolfson Ray is a Baltimore-based sculptor inspired by nature and the relationship humans have with the earth. Her archiTERRA exhibit presents the evolution of wood as art, and the experience creates a new environment, one that reflects the interdependency humans and the natural world have with each other. Ray hopes that when visiting the exhibit, the viewer experiences the deep-seated beauty in nature.

Matt Wilt Mechanical Reproduction Monday, June 3-Saturday, August 10, 2019 Monday-Friday, 8:30 am-8 pm Saturday, 10 am-4 pm; Sunday, 10 am-2 pm Public Reception: Saturday, June 8 5-8 pm With an enigmatic collection of objects, artist Matt Wilt seeks to blur the boundaries between two-dimensional and the three-dimensional approaches to art making.

In this exhibition, Wilt highlights the inherent value of traditional craftsmanship in sculpture work, while also exploring the creative expressions in art movements such as Dadaism and Surrealism.

Chris Vadala

Chris Vadala, one of the country’s foremost woodwind artists, is in demand as a jazz/classical performer and educator, and the Rick Whitehead Trio, winner of the 2007 Best Jazz Group Washington Area Music Award (Wammie) bring their world-class skill and artistry to Harmony Hall Arts Center. Vadala’s performing career is highlighted by his long tenure as standout woodwind artist with the internationally recognized Chuck Mangione Quartet. Vadala is one of the Selmer Company’s most requested artist in residence clinicians and has appeared on more than 100 recordings to date. He is director of Jazz Studies and saxophone professor at the University of Maryland, where he is a UM Distinguished Scholar–teacher and author of numerous books and articles.

Rick Whitehead, the recipient of the Washington Area Musician’s Association 2007 Best Jazz Instrumentalist award, was the featured guitar soloist for the USAF Band’s Airmen of Note for 22 years and toured with the group throughout the United States, Far East, and South America. Whitehead is backed by the formidable rhythm section of John Previti on string bass and Barry Hart on drums.

The Clovers and The Velons Saturday, January 19, 2019 | 8 pm The Clovers, founded by Harold Lucas, began singing together at Armstrong High School in Washington, D.C. The group’s signing with Atlantic Records in 1950 began an unbelievable string of 15 number-one hits on the rhythm and blues charts.

Their hits on Atlantic included “Don’t You Know I Love You,” “Fool, Fool, Fool,” “One Mint Julep,” and “Lovey Dovey.” Over the years, various members left the act, but Lucas kept touring and recording with carefully chosen replacements, including Johnny Mason and Steve Charles. By the 1980s, The Clovers were undergoing a renaissance, achieving radio airplay with newly recorded material, including a number one, double-sided hit “Don’t Play That Song,” and “Drive It Home.” The Clovers have performed continually through the years and have built a reputation as one of the most entertaining groups around, combining excellent showmanship, a healthy dose of humor, and an authentic, exciting vocal blend.

The talented vocal group, The Velons, has been performing and recording for nearly 60 years. They continue to dazzle audiences with their harmony, which recaptures the sound and spirit of love songs echoing in the hearts of the young and young at heart. Their polished vocals and use of blow-style harmony have been compared to those of legendary vocal groups The Moonglows and the Flamingos. Their recordings have created hits in the Carolinas (“Zing Went the Strings of My Heart”) and in the United Kingdom (“Why Don’t You Write”).

Marvin Brown, Elton Lynch, and Steve Jackson started singing in their early teens as The Softones. Chuck Brown Band Saturday, March 2, 2019 8 pm “The Godfather of Go-Go,” Chuck Brown, who passed away on May 16, 2012, is the undisputed sole founder and creator of Go-Go music, a hypnotically danceable genre deeply rooted in funk and soul that he developed in the early 1970s. Chuck Brown’s signature style earned him a place in American music royalty. By combining a Latin percussion groove with his love of blues, jazz, gospel, soul, and African rhythms, Brown developed his own unique sound. His first hit was “We the People” on his debut album in 1972, followed by “Blow Your Whistle.” In 1978, with Chuck Brown and The Soul Searchers, Brown’s original composition “Bustin’ Loose” took the number one spot in Billboard on Source/MCA Records. Brown ran off a string of hits, including “We Need Some Money,” “Go-Go Swing Medley,” and “Your Game: Live at the 9:30 Club.” The Chuck Brown Band, which had toured the world with the Godfather of Go-Go, carries the torch and keeps the beat and legacy alive.

Bridging the Gap

Bridging the Gap is the highly acclaimed string duo featuring violinist Peter Wilson and double bassist Aaron Clay. Hailed by The Washington Post for “superior arrangements and uncommon musicianship,” this unlikely duo offers a unique voice to many musical styles, performing music of the classical tradition, jazz, big band, folk, film music, popular song, and even funk. Members of “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band, Wilson and Clay have served as musicians of the White House for over a quarter century.

In 1997 they began visiting local schools as a duo to perform outreach concerts. Known for their engaging personalities on stage, incorporating humor and audience participation in their shows, they have appeared in venues from school classrooms and private homes to concert halls and stadiums. Together, Wilson and Clay were honored in their home state by receiving the Music Award from the Arts and Humanities Commission of Fairmont, West Virginia, in recognition of their “outstanding leadership and devotion to the enhancement of the arts.”

Scaggiari offers a comfortable mix of classic American songs and contemporary originals. He is most at home with Ellington, Gershwin, Mozart, and Rachmaninoff. Mad Lads Saturday, March 16, 2019 8 pm Mad Lads was formed in 1964 at Booker T. Washington High School in Memphis, Tennessee. John Gary Williams, Julius E. Green, William Brown, and Robert Phillips comprised the original line-up. The group recorded on the Volt label, a subsidiary of the legendary Stax label out of Memphis, Tennessee. They were one of the few groups at Stax whose harmonies were influenced by the doo-wop sound. Their hits include “I Want Someone,” “I Don’t Have to Shop Around,” and “I Want a Girl.”

In addition to her active performance schedule, Purcell is a sought-after jazz vocal educator and clinician. Purcell, formerly the vocalist in the Washington, D.C., Air Force Band and in Airmen of Note, received her doctorate of musical arts in jazz performance at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she also served as jazz voice instructor and founded and directed the University of Illinois Jazz Vocal Ensemble. Presently, she is the director of Jazz Studies and Jazz Voice at George Mason University and the founder/director of the Mason Jazz Vocal Ensemble. Daryl Davis Band Wednesday, April 3, 2019 2 pm Chicago native Daryl Davis graduated from Howard University with a degree in jazz.

Outside school, he was personally trained by legendary blues, boogie woogie, and rock ’n’ roll pianists Pinetop Perkins and Johnnie Johnson, who both claimed him as their godson and praised his ability to master a piano style that was popular long before he was born. In addition to being a pianist and vocalist, Davis is also a professional actor, author, and lecturer, now residing in Maryland. Along with leading the Daryl Davis Band, Davis has worked with Elvis Presley’s Jordanaires, Chuck Berry, the Legendary Blues Band, Percy Sledge, Sam Moore, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Coasters, The Platters, The Drifters, and many others. Skip Mahoney and The Casuals Saturday, April 6, 2019 8 pm Skip Mahoney and The Casuals formed in 1965 in Washington, D.C. The original members were Skip Mahoney, George Norris, Roger Chapman, and Billy Jones. In 1973, the group experienced its first taste of recording success with the release of “Your Funny Moods” and “I Need Your Love.” The group’s dazzling vocals, highlighted by Mahoney’s impressive falsetto, propelled “Bless My Soul” into the R&B Top 40 for 15 weeks in 1976. With the release of their smash hit “Wherever You Go” in 1976, the group achieved international notoriety for the first time.

Improvisation is not just a technique for Cyrille Aimée, it’s a way of life. The acclaimed vocalist ventured from singing on street corners in Europe to dazzling audiences at the world’s most prestigious jazz festivals; from sneaking out to sing in gypsy encampments in her native France to acting on Broadway; from braving the notoriously tough audiences at New York’s Apollo Theatre to being called a “rising star in the galaxy of jazz singers” by The New York Times. Among countless accolades, Aimée won the Montreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition and the Sarah Vaughn International Jazz Vocal Competition. Her most recent album, “Let’s Get Lost,” is her second with her innovative two-guitar line-up. As an actress, Aimée co-starred with Bernadette Peters in a Stephen Sondheim tribute at New York’s City Center. She’s shared her story via master classes, a TEDx talk, and an address at the Conference on World Affairs.

The Spaniels Saturday, April 20, 2019 8 pm The Spaniels is an American rhythm and blues doo-wop group best known for the hit “Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight.” The group was called the first successful Midwestern rhythm and blues group. Group member Pookie Hudson was considered by some to be the “first true leader of a vocal group” because as the main singer, he soloed at his own microphone while the rest of the group shared a second microphone. The Spaniels became one of the first two artists to sign with Vee-Jay Records—the first large and independent African American-owned record label. The Spaniels’ hits on Vee-Jay included “Baby It’s You, “Peace of Mind,” and “Everyone’s Laughing.”

When “Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight” was featured in movies such as “American Graffiti” and “Three Men and a Baby,” an entire new generation was exposed to the group’s music.

Pookie Hudson’s dying wish was that the group continue on in his name and perform all the greatest hits he wrote and produced. The group kept their promise to do so. Today’s members of The Spaniels are Wellington “Bay” Robinson, Steven Wade, James Ivy, James Faison, and Lester “Earl” Wade.

The Spaniels recorded a single in 2010 named “Baby Sweets” (a remake of the 1950s recording) and on the flip side “Let’s Strike a Match,” both of which continue to get rave reviews around the world.

Seikaly/Herberman Duo

Lena Seikaly, from Washington, D.C., is a fresh voice on the national jazz scene.

She was named “one of Washington’s preeminent jazz singers” and “brightest voices in jazz” by The Washington Post. Dr. John Hasse, Duke Ellington’s biographer, called Seikaly a “major league young talent in jazz.” Seikaly is making her mark as both a revivalist of traditional jazz vocals and an innovator in contemporary vocal jazz styles. Jazz guitarist Steve Herberman is a master performer and educator. His sheer command of the instrument puts one in mind of the great jazz guitar masters.

Herberman is a graduate of Berklee College of Music and has performed at venues such as Birdland in New York City, Spazio in Los Angeles, the NAMM shows in Anaheim and Nashville, and, recently, the North Wales Jazz Guitar weekend in the United Kingdom. Closer to home, he has performed at Blues Alley, the Smithsonian Jazz Cafe, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Saturday, May 11, 2019 8 pm TJ Hooker-Taylor is the son of blues and soul legend Johnnie Taylor, who died in May 2000. Hooker-Taylor grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. He was surrounded by gospel, soul, and blues throughout his childhood. Hooker-Taylor was blessed with his father’s love for music and more importantly, his father’s soulful voice. An accomplished artist in his own right, he performed as an opening act for Johnnie Taylor for 10 years. Since his father’s passing, Hooker-Taylor has spent his years touring the country and keeping Johnnie Taylor’s music alive. Pianist Alex Bugnon has been a prolific, energetic force on the contemporary music scene for almost three decades. A renowned musician, composer, and bandleader, Bugnon comes from the picturesque town of Caux, Switzerland— four miles from Montreux, site of the world famous jazz festival. No doubt, the annual convergence in his hometown and in his own home of some of music’s most illustrious names played a role in his decision to pursue a musical career.

The fact that his uncle was the legendary Donald Byrd only served to fortify his decision. It’s no coincidence that Bugnon is embraced by a rhythm and blues/soul audience: His love of music was rooted in an appreciation and understanding of classic jazz and soul-based artists Horace Silver to Herbie Hancock; Thelonious Monk to Ahmad Jamal; and Art Blakey to Earth, Wind, and Fire.

Arts on a Roll is an on-demand, mobile arts service that works with visual and performing

artists to provide engaging workshops that facilitate artistic expression for the young and young-at-heart.The ideal hassle-free experience; we provide the teaching artists, supplies, and equipment.You make the art!

Perfect for birthday parties, girl and boy scout meetings, in-school and afterschool programs, community days, church groups, camps, office team-building, festivals, and so much more!
