Celebrating 20 Years! Help us celebrate 20 years of sweet memories and make this year’s Gingerbread Show one to savor! Get into the spirit of the season with these fun holiday activities! Visit us and celebrate gingerbread-style.

Saturday, November 30, 12 noon –5 pm

Ugly Sweater Day Don’t be shy, wear that ugly sweater with pride! Don your ugliest holiday-themed apparel to this year’s Gingerbread Show and take a selfie with the Gingerbread Boy. Post the pic on Facebook with the hashtag #DCMcelebrating20 and you will be entered into a drawing to win tickets (2) to Savor the Flavor Tour & Tasting.

Friday, December 6, 1 pm, 2 pm & 3 pm

Pajama Party (story time) ’Tis the Season to be jolly and wear your favorite holiday PJs to the Gingerbread Show! Kids are encouraged to come dressed in their most festive holiday pajamas for story time. Story time will feature a variety of children’s classic holiday stories plus a sweet treat. FREE with admission to the show.

Saturday, December 7, 12 noon –3 pm

Make Your Own Reindeer Food (children’s activity) Everyone leaves milk and cookies for Santa, but what about his reindeer? They do all the hard work pulling Santa’s sleigh and could use a snack along the way! Kids can make their own homemade holiday blend reindeer food. FREE with admission to the show.

20th Annual Gingerbread House Contest and Show For a sweet treat, come and view an amazing display of edible gingerbread houses. No nibbling allowed! Visitors will have the opportunity to vote for the Viewer’s Choice Competition. $2/person (cash only); Children 4 & under are FREE.


Lunchtime Lawn Concerts Wednesdays, May 15 & June 5, 12 noon–1:30 pm STOP BY DARNALL’S CHANCE on your lunch break and listen to some of the area’s top musicians! Bring your own brown bag lunch or picnic basket. Some picnic tables will be on-site, but you are encouraged to bring a blanket or chair. FREE. Program sponsored, in part, with a grant from the Maryland Humanities Council.

Blue Star Museum Tours Fridays & Sundays, May 31–September 1, 12 noon–3:15 pm FREE admission to active duty military personnel & their families! DARNALL’S CHANCE HOUSE MUSEUM, in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, and the Department of Defense, is offering free tours to active duty U.S. military personnel, as well as, members of the National Guard and Reserve, U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps, and up to five family members. Just present your military ID. FREE

Hot Chocolate Fridays Warm up with a cup of authentic colonial hot chocolate and a guided house tour. No reservation necessary. Tours on the hour. Fee: $8/person

A Slice of History: The Story of Pie Did you know that pies were first invented thousands of year ago and their history is rich in flavor? Celebrate National Pie Day with us! Join Debbie Waugh of Green Springs Garden to learn about the history of pie from its medieval origins to today. Pie and coffee reception to follow. Reservation & payment required in advance. Fee: $15/person

Savor the Flavor: Tour & Tasting This winter, history is a little sweeter at Darnall’s Chance Museum! Learn why chocolate was so popular in Colonial America. Visitors will get to taste hot chocolate and chocolate tea made from authentic 1750s recipes. Afterwards, take a FREE guided tour of our 18th century house. Advance registration required. Fee: $10/person includes house tour, hot drinks, and delectable sweets.

Black History Month Presentation: Jubilee Voices The Washington Revels, Jubilee Voices ensemble, will perform songs and stories of struggle, perseverance, trials, and triumphs of African Americans as expressed through a cappella music. Program will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Upper Marlboro. No reservation necessary. FREE

Highland Tea Attention lads and lassies! Spend a cozy winter afternoon at Darnall’s Chance Museum and celebrate the museum’s Scottish roots by partaking in a traditional Scottish tea. Wear plaid and be entered into a drawing for Scottish-themed door prizes. Reservation and payment required in advance. Fee: Resident $25; Non-Resident $32

Colonial Tavern Dinner Be our guest as we recreate the atmosphere and flavor of a mid-18th century tavern dinner in Upper Marlborough. Enjoy colonial food and spirits. Following dinner, listen to or join in with Ship’s Company as they sing sea chanties and tavern songs of the period. Reservation and payment required in advance. Fee: Resident $35; Non-Resident $45

Liberty Girls: An American Girl Book Club Our Liberty Girls Book Club is back in 2019 with American Girls Marie-Grace and Cecile! Read about the exciting adventures of these two 19th century girls from New Orleans, Louisiana. At each meeting, members will participate in a book discussion with a Prince George’s County librarian, do a period activity or craft, and enjoy light refreshments. For girls ages 7–13. $30 membership fee covers the book discussions, activities, refreshments, and a NEW 2019 Liberty Girls t-shirt and book bag.

Saturday, May 4, 12 noon– 4 pm

Girl Scout Day at the Museum Brownies and Juniors are invited to Darnall’s Chance to learn skills and complete activities that will earn them four fun patches. Activities will be followed by a special performance by award-winning actress Mary Ann Jung celebrating the life of Juliette Gordon Low who founded Girl Scouts of the USA in 1912. Space is limited. Reservation & payment required in advance. Rain date is Sunday, May 5. Fee: $20/scout includes all patches; leaders and chaperones are FREE.

Mother’s Day Tours Complimentary tours of the museum to mothers and grandmothers when accompanied by a paying child or grandchild. Children have the opportunity to make a Mother’s Day card. No reservation necessary. FREE

Dad’s Day Challenge Celebrate Father’s Day colonial-style! Bring the entire family and help dad learn how to be a proper 18th century gentleman. Try fun hands-on activities highlighting different colonial trades, 18th century entertainment, and more! No reservation necessary. FREE

Saturday, July 20, 6–8 pm

National Ice Cream Month: Ice Cream Social Commemorate National Ice Cream Day at Darnall’s Chance by making yourself a sundae to honor ice cream’s colonial roots. Enjoy ice cream and music, participate in lawn games, and more! Program co-sponsored by the Town of Upper Marlboro Historical Committee. No reservation necessary. FREE while supplies last.

Wednesdays & Thursdays, July 24–August 15, 11 am–2 pm

I SPY Kids learn real 18th century spying techniques during a role-playing interactive spy mission for General George Washington. Find out how the Continental Army successfully outwitted the British with secret codes and other tricks to win American Independence! Program for children ages 6-12 years who can read and write. No reservation required. 30-45 minute activity—drop in any time between 11 am and 2 pm. Groups of 7 or more must call in advance to schedule a special appointment.

The Great Jack O’ Lantern Campfire Join us for an evening of fall fun! Roast marshmallows over a campfire, view a dazzling display of hand-carved illuminated jack o’ lanterns, go on a pumpkin hunt and more! Enjoy popcorn and hot cider. No reservation required. Fee: $5/person (cash only); FREE ages 4 & under

Hansel & Gretel Tea Party Visit Darnall’s Chance when it is decorated like a gingerbread house. Listen to the story of Hansel and Gretel, enjoy tea and dessert, and participate in a holiday craft activity. Registration fee required for all attendees — children and adults (children must be accompanied by a paying adult). Reservation and payment required in advance. Age limit: 5 & up. Fee: Resident $17; Non-Resident $22

Proceed past the County Administration Building (right) and School House Pond (left). Darnall’s Chance is the first driveway on the left after School House Pond.
