Montpelier Arts Center welcomes aspiring creators and appreciators of art!

Art intersects life at Montpelier Arts Center, a multi-faceted, community-oriented facility that has been a complete arts destination for more than 30 years, offering exhibitions, classes, performances, and studios. Sixteen professional artists maintain open studio hours for the public from 10 am – 5 pm daily, seven days a week. The three galleries housed at the Arts Center introduce changing exhibitions by local and national visual artists who work in a variety of media and styles. Nationally and internationally recognized performers hold concerts in a quaint, intimate setting. Classes in the visual and literary arts are offered year-round for adults, teens, and children.

Admission is FREE to the galleries and gallery receptions.

Visitor Guidelines: The galleries and studios at Montpelier Arts Center are free and open to the public, seven days a week. Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult when visiting the galleries. No photography or videography is allowed in the galleries without permission of the artists or the Arts Center.

Accessibility: The Department of Parks and Recreation encourages and supports the participation of individuals with disabilities. Register at least a minimum of two weeks in advance of the program start date to request and receive a disability accommodation.

Tours: Guided tours of the Arts Center include the exhibitions on view and visits with the artists working in their studios. Tours can be arranged by calling the Arts Center during office hours (8:30 am– 5 pm).

A tour of the Arts Center can often be arranged in conjunction with a tour of the Montpelier Mansion.

Directions: Montpelier Arts Center is located off Route 197 and Muirkirk Road in Laurel, Maryland, one quarter-mile west of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. From the Capital Beltway (I-495), take the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (MD-295) North, and exit at Route 197 (Laurel-Bowie Road) towards Laurel. Continue on Route 197 to Crystal Plaza Shopping Center/Muirkirk Road. Turn left onto Muirkirk Road; Montpelier Arts Center Drive is the first right.

Parking: There is plenty of free parking available at the Arts Center.

“Shout for Joy:” African American Sacred Music Traditions JANUARY 23 – FEBRUARY 28, 2017 Public Reception: Sunday, January 29, 2–4 pm Through the stories behind the creation of spirituals, hymns, and gospel music, this exhibit uncovers the tremendous importance of sacred music in the black community beginning in West Africa and extending to the 21st century.

Library Gallery The Library Gallery at Montpelier Arts Center highlights local artists selected by a juror. Laura Amussen, award-winning artist, director of exhibitions and curator at Goucher College, and educator at Towson University, served as the juror for the 2016-2017 Library Gallery Competition.

Allen Linder SEPTEMBER 3 –OCTOBER 30, 2016 Public Reception: Friday, September 9, 7–9 pm Working as a sculptor for 30 years, Allen Linder’s mysterious drawings reveal his impulse to describe form through light and dark values. Linder works from all points of view until up and down suggest themselves.

Fifth Annual Artists on the Rise: Juried Teen Exhibition MARCH 10 – 31, 2017 Public Reception & Awards Ceremony: Saturday, March 11, 1–3 pm Montpelier Arts Center strives to foster a positive, creative environment in which young and emerging artists realize their full potential as creative individuals. In honor of National Youth Art Month, Montpelier spotlights teens (ages 13–18) in the Washington metropolitan area and their talents in the visual arts.

Ellen Cornett APRIL 8 – MAY 28, 2017 Public Reception: Saturday, April 8, 2–4 pm Inspired by the humorous and serious, often tragic undertones of fairytales, Ellen Cornett’s charcoal drawings illustrate intriguing vignettes of conflict, misunderstanding, and relationships gone awry. See Cornett create a live drawing along a gallery wall in-person or follow its progress through her blog and on Facebook and Instagram.

Fran Abrams JUNE 9– JULY 29, 2017 Public Reception: Friday, June 9, 7–9 pm Trained in architecture and urban planning, Fran Abrams’s creative process combines both left and right brain. His polymer clay pieces are intricately and mathematically planned out to fit together to evoke the fluid sense of fabric caught at a moment in time.

Resident Artist Gallery Steven Williams SEPTEMBER 3–25, 2016 Public Reception: Friday, September 9, 7–9 pm Inspired by everything from classic science fiction to found objects, Williams uses a process of intuition, accident, and chance. His mixed media works meet at the intersection of surrealism and abstraction.

Patrick Cromwell OCTOBER 1– 30, 2016 Public Reception: Sunday, October 2, 1–3 pm Influenced by the work of M.C. Escher, Patrick “Mackie” Cromwell experiments with patterns of light and dark as well as different techniques of etching a plate.

Through the creative process, he often discovers and connects more with his interior life.

Patricia Phillips Bowden NOVEMBER 5–27, 2016 Public Reception: Friday, November 18, 7–9 pm Patricia Phillips Bowden, who holds a BFA from the Corcoran College of Art & Design, continues her explorations of art through paintings on a variety of surfaces and through the creation of mixed media pieces.

Barbara Talbott APRIL 8–30, 2017 Public Reception: Saturday, April 8, 2–4 pm The need to replicate the texture and surface of an object propels Barbara Talbott to discover new ways to use materials and processes in everything she makes.

After 30 years as an advertising photographer, graphic designer, and computer illustrator, she also brings this experience into her work.

David Brosch received his BA in fine arts and BS in architecture from the University of Maryland. A printmaking resident artist and instructor at Montpelier Arts Center, his artwork usually comprises representational imagery and strong colors.

Lori Ulmer-Hanson JUNE 3–25, 2017 Public Reception: Friday, June 9, 7–9 pm Lori Ulmer-Hanson works in a diverse array of media, including hand-sculpted raku clay, wood, stone, and metal sculpture, as well as acrylic paintings. Cyrille Aimeé Vocalist Cyrille Aimeé is a winner of the Montreux Jazz Festival’s International Vocal Competition, the Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition, and the 2015 DownBeat Critic’s Poll (“Rising Star—Female Vocalist”). Raised primarily in France, Aimeé quickly fell in love with gypsy music and their way of life, a continued inspiration to this day.

This engagement of Cyrille Aimeé is funded through the Mid Atlantic Tours program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Davey Yarborough and Esther Williams Audience favorites husband-and-wife duo Davey Yarborough and Esther Williams bring their soulful blend of jazz and original songwriting to the Montpelier stage.

Davey is a music studies teacher at Duke Ellington School for the Arts, and Esther is a long time musical stage actress. They have performed up and down the East Coast, including the Kennedy Center, the Savoy in New York, and the East Coast Jazz Festival.

Todd Marcus Todd Marcus is one of the few artists worldwide to focus on the bass clarinet as a main instrument in modern jazz. His straight-ahead playing and compositions swing with fiery and introspective intensity, offer a strong lyrical sensibility, and often incorporate the Middle Eastern influences of his Egyptian-American heritage.

Allyn Johnson Native Washingtonian, Allyn Johnson, is a multi-talented musician, composer, arranger, and producer whose trademark sound gives brilliance and fortitude to the art of jazz improvisation. Mentored by the late great jazz legend Calvin Jones, Johnson hopes to continue Jones’s rich legacy of service, musicianship, and academic excellence in his teaching.

Hot Club of Baltimore The Hot Club of Baltimore performs the finest gypsy swing this side of the Atlantic inspired by the legendary French guitarist Django Reinhardt. Michael Joseph Harris is guitarist and artistic director of the group, which consists of a collective of top jazz musicians.

Sherry Winston Contemporary jazz flutist, Sherry Winston has performed at The White House for President and Mrs. Clinton, and for former President George H.W. Bush. Classical Recital Series The annual recital series of classical music is a juried competition open to all classical musicians in the United States. All recitalists are winners of the 2016– 2017 Classical Recital Competition. Recitals take place in the Main Gallery at Montpelier Arts Center. Classical recitals are free, but a $5 donation is appreciated.

ABOUT THE JUROR: Richard Scerbo maintains an active schedule as a conductor, bassoon teacher, and arts administrator at the National Orchestral Institute and the University of Maryland School of Music. In 2004, seeking to transcend the confines of the traditional classical concert experience, Scerbo founded INSCAPE Chamber Orchestra, a critically acclaimed, GRAMMY nominated group of highenergy master musicians.

Pre-show Talk with the Curtis Brothers In a pre-concert talk, brothers Zaccai and Luques Curtis will discuss how they integrate Afro-Caribbean music into jazz and what distinguishes that music from straight ahead jazz. Through live demonstrations, they will show important rhythms and explain key elements. Their concert that follows at 8 pm is sure to be enriched by this talk!

The duo will convey the irresistible excitement found in the dance halls and streets of Brazil, where Nirenberg has played in many Carnival parades.

The panel will be moderated by Candy Shannon, host and producer of WPFW’s “The Morning Brew-Friday Edition.” Joining the panel will be Shannon Gunn, leader of Shannon Gunn and the Bullettes, an all-woman jazz orchestra based in the DC area and Laura Dreyer who is a world traveled saxophonist/flutist and composer. ARTISTS ON THE RISE: FIFTH ANNUAL JURIED TEEN EXHIBITION The fifth annual Montpelier Arts Center juried teen exhibition will take place in March 2017 in the Library and Resident Artist Galleries. This competition is open to all artists 13-18 years of age who reside in Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, DC. Jurors will award prizes and cash honoraria based on artistic excellence. CLASSICAL RECITAL COMPETITION Classical musicians are being sought for the 2017-2018 Montpelier Arts Center Recital Competition. These Sunday afternoon recitals are free to the public and will take place in the Main Gallery. The competition is open to all musicians residing in the United States, and will take place in spring 2017; winners will be awarded honoraria and presented in recital during the 2017–2018 season.

TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES Montpelier Arts Center is interested in providing new and inspiring avenues for students in the visual and literary arts. We are currently seeking instructors that possess a thorough knowledge of the elements, processes, skills, and forms of their media with an ability to express that knowledge clearly to a diverse audience, from young children to older adults. Jurying for Studio Space

Montpelier Arts Center houses resident artists who work in a diverse array of media and styles. All are professional artists, and several teach the Arts Center’s classes and programs. Artists work in their studios throughout the week and can be visited by groups or individuals interested in purchasing their work, or learning more about the artistic process.

On a revolving basis, resident artists exhibit new work in the Art Center’s Resident Artist Gallery.

Join a thriving community of professional artists in the Montpelier Resident Artist Program. Reasonably priced studios that vary in size are rented to qualified artists. Individual studio spaces at Montpelier Arts Center are located on the first floor and the second floor. The printmaking studio is a shared workspace on the first floor.
