The College Park Aviation Museum offers a variety of tours for groups — whether you are looking to book a school field trip or an outing for a Senior Center or a Youth Group — we have something to offer. Our educational tours utilize our permanent exhibits as well as hands-on activities and interactives to excite participants about the history and science of flight. For school groups, tours are designed to address gradeappropriate Common Core and Maryland educational standards and can be modified to accommodate a wide range of learning abilities. Meet our Volunteers Jack Crabill was the first volunteer to join the Aerodynamics Workshop and is currently the Project Manager. He has enjoyed 19 years working with a marvelously talented crew of volunteers who have lent their skills to making, repairing and restoring aircraft including the Curtiss D, Bleriot XI and Ercoupe on display. Before working with the museum, he and his wife Joni completed an award-winning restoration of an Ercoupe. Jack has also been a board member of the Field of Firsts Foundation since 2002. Prior to retirement, Jack spent 33 years as a Science Supervisor and Teacher in the Prince George’s County School System. He has three degrees from the University of Maryland, including a PhD.
On the Cover On October 16, 1918 film star Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., stamped himself as an airmail package and departed College Park for New York in a publicity stunt to boost support for liberty loans. At 16¢ an ounce it cost $414.72 to ship him with the mail.
Plane Dougie Help us celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Airmail by creating your own, globetrotting, Plane Dougie! In 1918 Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. shipped himself to New York as an airmail package. How far abroad can Plane Dougie go? Pick up a Plane Dougie at College Park Aviation Museum, take him on vacation with you, or ship him to friends far away. Post pictures of Plane Dougie’s adventures on Facebook using #PlaneDougie. The Dougie that travels the most will win a trip aboard a reenactment of the first airmail flight out of College Park Airport on August 12, 2018! Other prizes will be awarded for Most airports visited, Most original Airmail sites visited, Northernmost destination, and Southernmost destination.

exhibits Gamera: A Monstrous Achievement Opening September 21 Do you have the balance, strength, and power to fly a helicopter? Find out in this exhibit exploring the evolution of helicopters through the University of Maryland’s Gamera project. This humanpowered helicopter, developed by the Aerospace Engineering department, set world records in pursuit of the Sikorsky Prize.

Aviation Meets Art Opening November 30 Flight and aviation have been part of visual culture long before the Wright Brother’s famous flight in 1903. Throughout the history of art, the depiction of flight and who or what is flying has changed with the tastes of the times, and the capabilities of the artists. The Renaissance, with its great leaps in science and art, also brought about the belief that man might fly, even if the method could not be developed. What was the impact of art on aviation, rather than vice versa? Local artists reveal their expression of the long history of flight and aviation.

Wright B Simulator Weekends 11–11:30 am, 1–1:30 pm, and 3–3:30 pm Included with museum admission What does it take to fly a Wright Model B Aeroplane? Museum Staff will guide you through takeoff and have you cruising in no time on our simulator.
Cub Corner 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month, 10:30 am Included with museum admission Come to the Cub Corner story time for preschool fun! Museum Day Live! Saturday, September 23 Doors will be open free of charge to Smithsonian magazine readers and Smithsonian.com visitors at museums and cultural institutions nationwide. Any visitor plus one guest who present a Museum Day Admission Card will receive free admission to the museum that day.
College Park Day Saturday, October 7, 11 am–4 pm, FREE museum admission Don’t miss the static display of helicopters that will be flying in today! Meet the crews and learn about their missions during this festival celebrating all the city of College Park offers. The event also features live music, food trucks, family friendly games & entertainment, and performances by local dancers and acrobats.
12 noon, FILM PREMIERE College Park Airport: Field of Firsts Join us on more than a century’s journey through time at this most remarkable and historic flying field with astounding archival photographs and film footage, and numerous first person accounts of historic events. Starting with the acquisition of land by the U.S. Army in 1909 for the establishment of the first flight training school in the United States, through the “Roaring 20s” and Barnstorming Era, leading up to the current day efforts to preserve the airport’s rich history. Film maker Austin Steo will be on hand to answer questions.
Home-School Day Tuesday, October 17, 11 am–3 pm $5 per person Home-schooled students and their parents are invited to the museum for a day of hands-on learning through interactive demonstrations and lessons.

Find out what happened to Corporal Frank Scott and see the airfield by lamplight while hearing tales of the past. Wear your costume on this tour that starts with a hayride, and concludes with hot cider and a fun fall activity. Director’s choice costume awards will be given each hour!
Scout Wings Day Sunday, November 12, 12 noon–4 pm $5 per person Take flight with the College Park Aviation Museum. Learn about the history and science of flight through hands-on demonstrations, experiments, and crafts. Activities will count towards badge work for scouts.
Cycle Through Aviation History Saturday, November 11, 2 pm $6 per person Discover 250 years of flight in a guided bicycle tour along the Anacostia River trails, from the first balloon flight in America to intriguing 20th century inventions and industry. The ride will be a flat 10 mile loop with snacks provided; some riding on quiet streets, but mostly off-road, paved trails. Persons 16 & under must be accompanied by an adult. Advance registration is required.
Santa Fly-In Saturday, December 2, 12 noon–4 pm $5 per person Watch Santa fly into historic College Park Airport with some help from the Prince George’s County Police Aviation Unit! Make holiday arts and crafts before having your picture taken with Santa.

Holiday Trains & Planes Saturday, December 16–Saturday, December 23 Included with museum admission Miniature trains, villages, tunnels, and depots spark the imagination as they bring history to life. The National Capital Trackers bring a fascinating, constantly moving, holiday-themed display of model railroads to the museum. Trains will stop running at 4 pm on December 23.
Discovery Cart Days October 20, November, 10, 22, & 24; and December 26–29 11 am–2 pm Included with museum admission Drop by the Discovery Cart to explore various historical, STEAM, and art related aviation topics. A Museum Educator will engage you with hands-on materials from the education collection that will help explore these topics through interactive questions, experiments, and activities!
